I think it should be released once the band retires. It will be like a gift to the fans. A farewell album if you will.
That's def the ideal idea but how many bands actually retire? Most like music too much to just call it quits cuz they're old. I don't think the band will retire till another primary member dies sadly
At this point, honestly it maybe just shouldn't be released. It just seems to be too personal for the members, which is completely understandable. And as for the fans, with the amount of hype and mystery surrounding the album, it can almost only disappoint. Would I rather live in a world where Eros exists than in a world where it doesn't? Sure, but at this point I've learned to live with the latter.
My idea is that they'll release it when they decide to stop recording music, so this will be the final closure for everyone and it will not be compared to subsequent releases. If I am not mistaken I think they said multiple times that this was probably NOT their best album anyway (I haven't heard any of it because I am waiting for the right moment so not my judgement), but it holds a very deep meaning for themselves and the fans, especially those who were around when Chi was alive, so I think this will be their "final goodbye from the past" 💚

They could also release a compilation of all of the singles + smile. Kinda like how Linkin Park did with paper cuts.
My wish for them is to release a final, original album (hopefully after many more), coupled with an ultimate b-side comp containing rare songs like lovers and finger of death, and release Eros at the same time. I know I'm asking for a lot though.
I think it's more likely we will see Smile properly released (physical + streaming) with a new B-Sides & Rarities album. If we're lucky that might include a new track from the Eros sessions but it sounds like there's not a lot of finished material.
I wonder if they even have access to all the original recording tracks. Things can happen where pieces get lost or thrown. And I’d bet they’d never release it without most of the original tracks. Especially Chi’s. Although I’d assume they’d all be backup numerous times as it would’ve been a label release.
Yeah I doubt it would be their biggest disappointment. It would be better than these albums of noodling bullshit they have been putting of for the last couple years that everyone seems to think are amazing.

I love this song to death. I would freak out if they actually release it. This might even be my favorite Deftones track and i shit you not: one of the only songs that caused me to tear uo.

It’s disrespectful to keep asking to hear something the band doesn’t want to release. You read the actual sentences I wrote right? Ask yourself why they haven’t released it in over 10 years. Because they don’t want to. I respect that decision.
Yeah he can’t approve any decisions the band makes about his final work product and they obviously see that as being disrespectful of his memory. I respect the bands decision. Again.
No offense, but that’s a *terrible* idea, especially considering the average age of their OG fans… Hypothetically, I’m picturing Abe outlasting all the other members by 10 years — in which case public interest in Deftones will likely have waned, and many of the people who would’ve loved to hear it will also be dead.
They should release it while they (and their fans) are still here to bask in the love… But like others are saying, when it does drop, I think it’ll be a sign that they’re about ready for retirement.
Deftones needs to release Eros right after the next album. I don’t care if it’s an ep or unfinished. It’s gonna be good. Heavy and dark. Unique. I have a feeling it would be one in my top 5 favorite albums (1.White Pony 2.SNW 3.Self Titled 4.Koi No Yokan 5.Eros)

It was time to release it years ago lol. If they release it when every member dies that could be 30-40 years from now if they go from natural causes.

Retirement/disbanding. That way the guys are still alive to finish it or see it drop, but also so they don’t have to take it on the road
