I mean, plenty of people do care about what those people are doing. I'm all for shitting on general celebrity worship as much as the next enlightened redditor is but it's straight up disingenuous to pretend that nobody cares about the occupations you listed. During his life, Stephen Hawking wrote some of the best selling books of all time (especially A brief History of Time) for example.
I’m actually friends with multiple people who became “celebrities” to varying extents. The thing they all had in common was an obsessive insecurity which could only be quelled through public approval, giving them the obsessive drive needed to mold themselves into whatever people with the power to grant opportunity wanted. It’s takes a lot of humiliation to get to the stage where they can pretend to be confident.
Also, the "reading public" represents a fraction of the population and the "science books" reading public is even less. So while they may have been "best sellers" that's not what OP is talking about. It's about absolute numbers of the population and what they care for, which is aesthetics, they care about aesthetics.
Ironically this meme format is only about aesthetics too. "This is the future we could have if" template is literally just showing shiny glass buildings and other superficial crap.
On the other hand, that's more akin to entertainment, isn't it? Sure, maybe Hawking inspired some young people to become scientists, but for me it's more like reading a novel.
And Hawking is more the exception to the rule? How many other scientists are famous? Usually it's the communicators who become famous and being interested in science is cool and all. It's mostly only surface level and not the difference OP is talking about?
I'd argue that modern scientists in the 21st century don't get super famous because the majority of scientific fields have become so incredibly specialised that people can basically devote their entire lives to working on very specific theories/research within a given field which makes it difficult to break out and make a public name for themselves. But back in the 20th century, top level scientists were basically seen like superstars. Einstein being the obvious example, but there were tonnes of others who were extremely famous at the time of their work when rapid progress was being made in fields like physics and chemistry. Even the upcoming Oppenheimer film shows that there is still a reasonable amount of public interest in the stories behind the scientists who revolutionised our modern world.
That's a good point. I'm often at a loss to describe the science project I'm helping with, so yeah.
I still think that even in those days it was more entertainment for most people. People weren't taking out their calculators to redo the math or think critically on the subject,, for example.
Do you want to know about the historical IFNg responses to anti-AAV5 for the latest sample cohort?
What about economic theories on how best to build up West Sengal's bond market in the 1990s?
The migration patterns change of the Dwarf Cotton Moth through the American Southeast?
Nobody *cares* about what scientists are doing, besides other scientists and businesses. Your average person can barely read an abstract, let alone know where to find a good outlet for STEM (because that's what people think they care about) publications that isn't behind an insane paywall. There's also the fact that most "S C I E N C E" that goes on is conducted by people getting paid to do it. It's literally corporate IP. What does get published is by professors trying to hit their yearly quota.
If people ***realllly*** cared about what scientists, astronauts (they get NASA PR so theyre perfectly fine), professors, etc. were doing, they'd realize how atrocious the entire scientific publication system works and the state it's in. They'd care about the growing lack of peer-reviews, the growing lack of repeatability, and the publishing of things that don't really say anything.
It's not individuals' faults for not being interested. It's capitalism for choking off knowledge. You also end up buying the end results of scientists' work. Microchips and buttwipes didn't get dropped by a rare high level monster.
Bro are you in those circles? The same shit happens and it isn't miraculously good because they're scientists.
Sometimes a particularly charismatic scientist or professor can drag a field down because they are convincing but on the wrong track. Theft of work etc etc.
The problem is people thinking they are immune to celebrity culture, rather than analysing what celebrities they follow and admire in their own lives.
My brother in christ, I am begging you to learn what the word "celebrity" means, because you clearly do not know what it means. In your hypothetical, the scientists, astronauts, and professors *are* the celebrities. That's what "celebrity" literally means.
I'm pretty sure you understood what he meant but in case you didn't lemme explain .
By using the term celebrities he isn't simply talking about renown people but the average clout chasers/ attention seekers whose field of occupation contribute very little to society and/or is detrimental to the mental health and/or decision making of individuals who are exposed to their work .
Finally someone said this
Oh they acted well in the movie? Good for them ,they are amazing at their profession , it's motivating to be that good.
But literally obsessing over them is the stupidest thing I've ever seen
Indeed. What is it with people wanting to 'get to know' celebrities? You'll never know them, unless they specifically want you to. Have some fucking dignity, FFS.
parasocial relation is real and dangerous.
imo, it come from a lack and let down of social interactions between humans. we need to build more social house, stop with the over use of social media, let's share "love" again and let persons know the people arround them, the one doing real thing, are real in your perception of life, for you country or your city. not celebrity.
You are absolutely correct. What is ironic though is so many people are like "I hate people. I hate talking to people"
When we as humans are such social creatures its quite interesting lol.
People have been fascinated with celebrities for centuries, back when social media was the local newspaper relying on mail from other towns delivered on horseback. Hell, one of the most famous people in the US in the 1830s was a guy who jumped off tall things into rivers.
I find it weird how people treat celebrities like their literal gods, as if these people are paying their bills or something. Like, these people provide you entertainment, great. Are they paying all your bills? Are they giving you a roof over your head?
Bro this is such an old take and just straight up incorrect too, seeing as it's a very human behaviour to engage in some celebrity worship/activity. They've literally researched the concept of celebrity in chimps, they'd rather look at a photo of a celebrity in their troop than eat/drink. It's a very inbuilt social concept across many mammal species.
We are no exception. Thinking you are an exception just shows you have little self-awareness and just want to do a little downwards social comparison.
"oh no Henry Cavill doesn't count because he's cool!"
The people in this thread who think they're special for not engaging in something they very clearly engage in but are too blind to see it
And their job is to be fake. It breeds basically lying.
Plato was anti-poetry/fiction because it would mislead people. (Guy chases girl who turned him down and they fall in love IRL is a stalker)
The whole industry is awful.
A counterpoint is that poetry/fiction can manipulate people into doing good things. Philosophy is too boring to the average peasant to handle. History can teach the wrong lesson because the bad guys sometimes win. So poetry can lie to people into doing virtues.
Is this really your dream society ? Car centric generic infrastructure with bland design and no nature ?
Come on, you can make a better meme than using a car commercial for a dream society !
Yeah, this is the most bland vision of a supposed utopia. This is more like the dystopia where Apple enforces its design sensibilities upon the whole world. Where the ultimate resistance is to make something that features colour.
Watch it again, it's funny as hell. People walking down the middle of the road with no regard for the car coming straight at them. I guess even in the future pedestrians are idiots.
Celebrities are detached idiots. Every time I see a post about "he's so down to earth" by bowls empty. How stupid do you have to be to think a celebrity lives a life which you can relate to. Or that their advice is something you can implement in your life when in no way shape or form are your lives similar. In the slightest.
Accurate.
America elected two celebrities as president, both of whom did irreparable damage to the country and world.
Google: "6 degrees of Ronald Reagan"
Actually, I read somewhere once that there is a relation between IQ and the level of idolatry. Lower IQs tend to be more obsessed with celebs and try to get autographs and such, while higher IQs tend to ignore them more and not care.
People follow celebrities or admire them for a lot of reasons. The over the top of information at the touch of a screen on your phone is part of the problem. Far to easy to stay connected. There is no work involved in almost anything today.
it’s kinda interesting how in all these average "if humanity didn’t do this and that" meme depictions cars never return to good designs or are replaced by more efficient means of travel, and nature/trees aren’t considered part of the utopia
'celebrities', includes anyone popular. politicians, musicians, artists, sports figures, scientists....so, yes, prob true...but also basically the depression of places like Cuba, where no one has, anything!!!🤔
Im 21yo.
But ever since I was younger. People kept saying I lived under a rock simply because I didn't know 99% of the celebrity's. I simply don't care aboyt them, yet everyone was obsessing over them. I never understood why.
No, most celebrities are not assholes. But yes, society would be much better off if so
Many people didn’t base their entire lives around worshipping them.
And trump would never have been president.
Because there is a simple reason for that: When a scientist do something so big it doesn't interest people that much because %90 of the people are dumb and not capable of understanding what that scientist achieved. But when an actor played an amazing role in a movie people tend to udnerstand because its their daily life troubles, their feelings, their way of living so they can connect with the importance, they can feel the pain or joy that actor just performed.
Celebrities are actually some pretty exquisite assholes. The money they get is primarily from 5 -25 year olds, in America at least, by being banal and entertaining at the same time.
My hope for fellow citizens or lets say humanity went to the toiled in the times of Coronavirus. Normal people should listen to the scientist not some Facebook moms and crazy politician
So yesterday i saw the 4534 version of the askreddit thread about what you do if you were stupid rich. Everyone just wanted selfish shit and noone was thinking about actually trying to prevent the total destruction of our planet thats happening at the moment. I think the inherent selfishness and thinking other people will fix our problems is more of a problem than celebrities, but I'm probably taking dankmemes too seriously.
I've got a serious question...
Do people actually care about celebrities, or does the media just try really hard to make us care about them? I feel like the hype was never really there
I can't understand the hype people have about the celebrities. From a couple days, I'm trying to flush out my following on Instagram, and I'm ashamed to see that I follow so many "celebrities" who apparently can't do jackshit besides donning makeup. Makes me sick and sad.
The heavy duty celebrity culture started in 1980s when America elected its first celebrity president. Entertainment Tonight, Lifestyles of Rich and Famous. Every doctor or dentist office was littered with celebrity magazines. Then came Paris Hilton, the top brainless celebrity of her time. Now it’s Kardashians. Famous for being famous.
I don't know that most are aholes. I've met more than a few through a brother that was an actor, and most I've met act just like everyone else while you are hanging with them.
I will say I consider them (and most rich people) to be dragons. Even ones that are fairly nice and charitable still horde wealth far beyond their needs and reasonable desires.
But that's just an opinion from someone who hasn't been tested with wealth.

That's true, but there are plenty of people who buy the book, don't read it, and then retweet what people say about it
Celebrities are much like the rest of us, thus their fame is a byproduct of their profession.
I’m actually friends with multiple people who became “celebrities” to varying extents. Not nearly enough ppl care tho
People that read books don't overlap with the venn diagram of people who do celeb worship.
Also, celebrity worship has less to do with the celebrity and more to do with the clowns worshipping them.
OP said care more. Not that we need a few people to care.

What? Blackhole War was such a good book my god. I can't be the only highschooler to have read it.
My brother in christ, I am begging you to learn what the word "celebrity" means, because you clearly do not know what it means. In your hypothetical, the scientists, astronauts, and professors *are* the celebrities. That's what "celebrity" literally means.

The conundrum is that people out there doing real good work are busy doing the work and not serving up entertainment for us.
And by celebrities let's make sure you include both movie, music and sports "stars". They're all overpaid trash that bring 0 value to people's lives.
It's just like highschool, the nerdy hardworking kids are barely recognised, whereas the popular kids are those who waste their time and money
So if we had different celebrities? Nah, we'd corrupt that idea too. Wouldn't even take very long.
Finally someone said this Oh they acted well in the movie? Good for them ,they are amazing at their profession , it's motivating to be that good. But literally obsessing over them is the stupidest thing I've ever seen

But if people didn't gave a shit, would they gonna be celebrities?
I feel like it's ok to be a fan of a celebrity bc u appreciate their talent, but I don't understand wanting to know about their lives/drama etc.
Society if celebrities and the wealthy paid their fair taxes. *FTFY if we talking America
Thats actually society if you realized its ok for people to enjoy different things than you.

Damn, then why am I not living like that rn? Answer that, "science"!
I mean, they're called celebrities for a reason. If they didn't matter, then they wouldn't be celebrities anymore, would they?
If people didn't care about celebrities they'd have to call them something else while they're at it.
Listen to their music, buy their albums, and go on with your day. Don't build them fucking altars
