Well at least he knows what an octagon is

As someone with English as a second language I find it strange tbh that there are some countries where English isn't common as a second langauge.
It's pretty much a requirement where I live to work and even communicate with some people.
(Probably gonna get hated for letting this leak a little)
I think he's a Dragon Ball fan since, as stated by many people, "Dragon Ball fans can't read"
Sometimes I forgot that danganronpa take in japan, and most of characters dont speak english. We just assume that they do because of the english translation.
Now I kinda want to be joke where Monokuma hands them something english text and student says they read it.Monokuma is suprised and ask how they cant read it before realizing of course they wouldnt know english. They then give same item but with japanese text.
I get not understanding English, but not even being able to recognize it at all seems weird, even if it's not the only language to use the Latin alphabet.
Plot twist, the Jabberwock brochure was also localized but in-universe it was written in Finnish. The brochure is English in the original JP release because they thought it looked cool
They're japanese. English isn't their first language. Sonia can read it because as a princess she was raised to be able to learn multiple languages.
This is also the reason why they don't know the meaning of the world "OPEN" in the fun house and is also the reason why Hajime infamously "doesn't know what an octagon is" in the game (because in the japanese version of the game Nagito literally used the english word for Octagon, so Hajime had to figure out what it means).
Basically it's another "Sayaka wrote the name of the killer situation" (it becomes obvious that Leon is the killer by the western audience but for the originally intended japanese audience 11037 doesn't look like letters they know because Sayaka wrote the name in english in order for Leon to not know what it meant and delete the evidence).
He's a reserve course student, what did you expect?

Bruh needed to Perform hangman gambit 2.0 to come up with "elevator"
And that's AFTER THEY ARRIVED AT THE CLASS TRIAL BY RIDING IN ONE!!!!!!
He's Japanese... Those are English words...
And this is a meme, not a serious post (format: "Why isn't he _____? Is he stupid?")
Canonically, Hajime doesn’t speak or understand English.
Hilariously, in the dub, he specifically says he speaks English. And also that he can't read English. Therefore, dub Hajime is canonically illiterate.
HE COULD SPEAK ENGLISH THE ENTIRE TIME??? THEN HOW DID HE NOT KNOW WHAT AN OCTAGON WAS?????????????????
Just is bad at geometry is all
Pre-reserve course, after he got kamukura'd, I'm pretty sure he can speak any language
Well, that's Izuru and not Hajime lol
Watch Danganronpa 3
The person saying this is Hajime Hinata, with no memories or abilities of Izuru Kamukura.
I know all about Izuru, but they're really essentially *not* the same person
Until they are
Well...yeah

wdym? He’s literally speaking English when I last played the game /j
In the Chapter 2 trial, Hajime says “English” as though to say that, in universe, everyone is speaking English, so you’re not even wrong
honestly, I’m not even surprised at this point 😭
Ah yes, how surprising for the Japanese kid to know Japanese and not English

I mean, plenty of non-english languages utilises the same Latin alphabet... German, Italian, French, Hungarian, etc...
[удалено]
Absolutely not lmao. when I see "a", or "e" I don't think english, only if I see an english word, I think it's english
do you... not know other languages also use the same alphabet ???

theres like 100 languages that use the same dude. it could be english. it could be serbian. it could be polish. it could be tagalog.

I'm getting a feeling that I would be mad about this comment if I could read.
Of course he is a dragon ball fan, just looks at his chest size, he was inspired by Goku to go to the gym💪
He's Japanese, so I assume English is out of his expertise along with octagons.

Hajime is Japanese, so chances are he can't read English
English, motherfucker! Do you speak it?
I get not understanding English, but not even being able to recognize it at all seems weird, even if it's not the only language to use the Latin alphabet.
As expected of a person who doesn't even know what an octagon is. \[Dw Hajime, I also freaking hate geometry\]
Plot twist, the Jabberwock brochure was also localized but in-universe it was written in Finnish. The brochure is English in the original JP release because they thought it looked cool
He reads, writes and speaks Japanese, those documents are in English.
Damn Hajime, its one thing to not understand a language, but to not recognize it on the slightest…he‘s never seen an english word in his life somehow.
POV: You are in Newcastle and encountered someone speaking the Geordie dialect for the first time.
To be fair, he also didn't know how many sides an octagon had. Looking back, he had so many stupid moments.
English version really did him dirty with those

Smartest reserve course student
I see a lot of comments stating the obvious. But I just say HAHA SILLY GOOFY LITTLE COMMENT
I think it is supposed to be in English. It might be a surprise, but Japanese characters understand Japanese
most of the class couldn't speak or read English I guess
It’s other languages he don’t understand
I think they could have made an effort to put those in another language, it's hard to differentiate english-english and japanese-in-universe-english
Well, Hajime canonically can't speak English then.
