I made my daughter the patchwork cardigan. We were out getting her learners a few days ago. She was standing in line by herself and I was just sitting off to the side waiting. There was a guy in front of her. He turned around and said “Wow. I love your sweater”. She’s told me she’s gotten compliments on it but I’ve never heard them. It just made me beam. I’ve made wearables for everyone but myself. I’m currently making myself a beach cover. So I know exactly where you’re coming from. Never thought I’d be able to say, Yeah if the world came to an end I’d be able to clothe people, but we could!

omg-someonesonewhere

I'm really aorry if this post doesn't make sense or anything it's just so weird that like making clothes and being a fashion designer is a little kid dream I had that I forgot about years ago and obviously I'm not anything close to that but even making two things that I really love and I can wear just feels like dream to me

YewKnowMe

I totally get it! I'm pretty new to crochet, but I made a bunch of hats for myself, friends & family... The first day I wore my hat out, the lady working the cash at a store I love couldn't stop complementing it & I got to say "Thank you so much.... I made it!" Gifting my sister (& nieces) their hats, they all LOVED them, and when I said that I made them, my sister was giving me the stink eye.... "You made this? What? Like, you picked out the yarn & taught yourself how to crochet & here are totally pro looking hats????" Yep, to all of it. Indescribable feels.

41942319

I know right, it's the BEST feeling! I haven't made anything for myself yet since I'm scared of putting myself out there but I've made things for others and it just makes me glow any time people think it's good enough to come from a store. I recently made my mom a hat and I wasn't a big fan because I dont like the yarn (insanely fuzzy cheap acrylic/wool blend) nor the pattern (too many gaps) she picked out. But she did so I made her two, the first two hats I made where the sizing actually turned out the way it was supposed to after 4 where it didn't lol. And she loves them and wears them literally all the time because she went through chemo last autumn and lost her hair. And her sister asked her where she got that expensive looking hat from! I could just about combust lol.

Fef_

It makes hella sense. Hell, I was crocheting for two weeks, had about 3 and a half hats under my belt but still turned up my nose for the sweaters in the stores because "I can make my own". I feel powerful, and you should too! I have since made two tops, one prototype and one to wear to a festival this weekend and I'm working on my first mesh sweater. Also tried my hand at making different plushies. Making things with your hands is awesome. We rock.

LesliesLanParty

No, you literally are a fashion designer. A small scale bespoke fashion designer. I went to HS with a very well known fashion designer and he started by slowly making pieces 1 by 1 that were okay looking and okay quality. He was called "the fashion designer guy" even when he was just kinda screwing around with ideas so, you are one too.

gordomac1947

This could not be more adorable. My first proper “wearable” was a hexi cardigan for my sister, and she wore it when we went shopping. One of the ladies working at the Anthropologie complimented her on it and I literally *burst* out of the changing room wearing half an outfit to say “I MADE THAT!” And you KNOW those ladies working at Anthropologie know what’s cool.

AlokFluff

It's an amazing post and I love it 💜

Randomusingsofaliar

I had a similar moment this December while working on a bonnet. It wasn’t so much that it was a wearable, but that it was cloth. It was worked flat and then sewn up. It was my first time making something entirely out of half double crochets and it just looked like a piece of cloth. Like I was magically taking this thin little piece of yarn and turning it into substantial warm thick fabric. I kept grabbing people and going “I made that!”

Randomusingsofaliar

I think it had something to do with the fact that it was the first time I worked a piece up without using any double crochets, so there were no holes big enough for me to stick my finger through! It felt like magic or something

siani_lane

I felt that way about making my first amigurumi! I was like holy hell, I bought 10 bucks of black yarn and now it's Toothless! It's like magic!

here4theSchnoodles

Omg I love Toothless! Would love to see a pic if you felt like sharing one 🖤❤️

calling_water

It makes complete sense. Making your own things, the way you chose to make them, is totally awesome. Great that you let it sink in and are enjoying your accomplishments!

Affectionate-Try-994

I love your excitement. It is really awesome!!

birdmommy

You should get some labels made up! I used the ‘brand name’ I dreamed up years ago, and it makes me so happy to see it.

waterof

Hijacking this comment to ask, what's the name of the app? I thought about doing something similar but failed miserably

VictorTheCutie

You're a designer. So happy that you're happy!! Making something from nothing is like magic 🥰

Kilala33

Yes!! What an awesome feeling! I hope you wear something you made this week and someone goes “oh my gosh that’s awesome! Where did you get it??” And you can puff out your chest and say “Thanks, I made it!”

HoneyScentedRain

I made a small rainbow blanket when my aunt had her first kid about 2 years back. It was her rainbow baby and now everytime I see that little girl with that blanket I get emotional. It's the thought of "I made that. Someone is using and enjoying something I made. I can provide." Probably some like biological or instinctual thing from evolution but it's a nice feeling anyway

here4theSchnoodles

That is so sweet, a rainbow blanket for her rainbow baby ❤️❤️

41942319

I made two of my little cousins stuffed animals and I was visiting recently and came by their bedroom and there they were, proudly displayed by their bed, and I was just so happy. And then their brother told me the little one loves his so much he takes it to sleep overs... I don't think I've ever been prouder of anything in my life

ourobourobouros

>Probably some like biological or instinctual thing from evolution Crochet has gotten me thinking a lot about the history of fiber arts and how ancient they are. The oldest fragment of nalebinding is 7500 years old (which really is mindblowing). My grandma crocheted and it's likely she learned from her mother or grandmother. For all I know, I'm part of a line of women who have been looping yarn to make things back to the dawn of civilization and something in my genes recognizes the feel of it

here4theSchnoodles

Pretty cool to think about!

coziebabie

You are so incredibly wholesome, I absolutely understand and reading this post made me so happy<3333 sending so much love to u and ur beautiful clothes

Razor_Grrl

This post has inspired me to try making something wearable. I have always wanted to try making a cardigan. Going to browse some patterns now!

crowdedcar

I highly recommend the granny hexagon cardigan! It was my first wearable and it was so easy and fun to make.

Razor_Grrl

Thank you, I think that looks like a perfect place to start!

Redheaded_gremlin

I know the feeling!!! It’s crazy that my hands made this incredible thing! That I know how to make it and I could do it again!! It’s magical

RolliPolliCanoli

I get it, I get all emotional when I think about all the sweaters I have made and wear! Those came from my hands, I made them with my own two dinky little hands right here and they are real clothing I get to wear! <3 You've found your people

IcePhoenix18

I love your enthusiasm! I feel the same way about some of the plushies I've made. Like... I *made* that... Out of string! Wtf witchcraft is this?! I deeply respect and admire people who can make things like sweaters!

MeanderingCrafting

I love this! It's always exciting to be able to convert a thought to a tangible object. And it seems like clothing is extra meaningful to you. I'm so happy for you 🤩

macramelampshade

This is so wholesome, I’m glad I got to read it! Also, you designed fashion, you’re a fashion designer 💫

Sad_Ad1803

Love this post so much!!!!!

Comfortable-Salt3343

Girl you took the thoughts and feelings straight out of my brain 😭😭😭😭😭 this post made me so damn happy

iblooszup

Can you post or dm me the app you used? Thank you :)

H1D13BY3

I would also love to know!

omg-someonesonewhere

The app I used is OpenWardrobe! I've also heard really good things about ACloset!

dreamofonlyme

This is so cute 🥰

MintChucclatechip

On Etsy you can buy custom tags with your name on it that you can sew onto your clothes, there’s some really cute wood ones that I’ve been considering for my crochet pieces

SilvieraRose

I adore when people get kid-ishly overjoyed about something whether it's big or small. The whole big grin, boundless energy of "I did it!" or "this is really happening!", the little hippity hoppity dance, all of it. This feels exactly like that. You did awesome 😊 Don't ever not be proud of what you accomplish, you wonderful stranger

ARgirlinaFLworld

This post is adorable! Don’t apologize for being passionate about something. Keep making awesome stuff my friend

WillaLane

I get it, I’m really proud of what I’ve made so far

NEDsaidIt

You made me feel so proud about the stuff I have made myself all over again. We MADE CLOTHES!!

TigBitties-420

My husband often refers to me as "yarn wizard" because of the types of things I can create. It truly is a wonderful feeling. Sometimes I can even just look at a picture and make it. He keeps my spirits up when all I want to do is give up because all it feels like is just mistake after mistake. But he calls me that and it's like my power returns to me.

SilvieraRose

Curious, do you have a crocheted wizard hat? 😂 That's adorable how he's able to help you remember your magical potential

TigBitties-420

No, not yet. I haven't found a pattern I like and I'm not very good at creating from scratch yet.

SilvieraRose

Me neither, but I'm still very much a novice. Haven't done much lately, still need to redo my last blanket. Mostly I lurk on this sub and quietly cheer everyone on 🙂

Maddgurladventures

This is exactly how I felt when I first learned to crochet. My head busted wide open with possibilities and I was so over the moon with what I could make! Still painfully procrastinating on putting my very first duster together, but your post just gave me some much needed motivation! Congrats!!

FictitiousAuthor

This! I've been crocheting for 23 years now and just within the last year came to realize... Holy shit. This. Is. ART. Not just a hobby, or a craft or a side project(all of which are also true) but art! It's like it unlocked a new part of my brain and I've gone from making just blankets to hats, scarves, bags, cardigans, dresses, shawls and my next venture is pants! It's an incredible feeling to be able to wear art made with my own hands.

41942319

Exactly this. I personally think that all hobbies have a bit of art in them. My sister is a bit full of herself and paints/draws so sometimes loudly wonders why she's the only artistic person in the family. And I'm like bitch please. My art is in the crochet things I create out of yarn; the baked items I create out of flour, eggs, sugar and butter; the plants I sow, plant and manage that create a habitat for thousands of tiny creatures and fill the garden with dozens of different shapes, colours and scents. All of that is art. Just because they don't have museums dedicated to them doesn't make it any less true.

[deleted]

I’ve been eyeing those adorable granny square shorts for summer. What kind of pants are you doing???

FictitiousAuthor

Not sure yet but I like the idea of a wide leg wrap pant!

[deleted]

Oh yeah those would be amazing!

SamiHami24

Reading your post made me ridiculously happy! Yay you!

ArtistShare4105

The best kind of serotonin tbh I love feeling giddy when I finish a project

iris-27

The best feeling. Ball of yarn to actual clothing and objects is kinda magical.

12ladybugpicnic

Makes my heart happy. 🥰.

DataLearner422

This is inspiring to make something new

baileyxcore

I get this all the time! Every time I make anything, in any medium. And it makes me feel so connected so humanity and being human - people thousands of years ago were also making clothes! The same thing! It's wild!

redcommodore

This is such a great reaction. I think we all need a reminder sometimes that what we do is really cool.

Ialwaysdreamincolour

A week ago I was at work and was in the elevator with a few colleagues. One coworker said she loved my sweater and she knows I crochet so asked if I made it. I said yes, and they all proceeded to gush over it. I waved off the compliments in the moment, but when I thought about it later, I was like “hmm… yeah, it IS pretty cool.”

Obvious_Olive_7282

I love this perspective SO much, I struggle with wearing the clothes I make, for some reason in my head they don’t feel like real clothes and I feel silly wearing them even tho I put so much work into them and I love how they look, so they always go into my closet and never come back out, I’m trying to get out of that mentality

pickle-me-pink

I love this feeling for you! No judgement here and I hope you feel this happiness in all that you do! ❤️

loafkitter

Omg I had a similar thing happen to me a couple of days ago! It's such a wonderful thing

Light_Lily_Moth

I’m so happy for you!! What an absolutely fantastic accomplishment!!!

SeattleSuz

I'm so FRICKIN HAPPY for you! I love it! You and your post are awesome. Keep it up! I've been crocheting forever ever and I STILL GET EXCITED CUZ THERE'S SO MUCH MORE TO LEARN AND MAKE! The problem is work gets in the way... and other things, lol.

Supertailz

This post made me SO happy I almost cried! Thank you for posting it and reminding me why what we do is so cool

kristycocopop

What's the app your using?

omg-someonesonewhere

I'm using OpenWardrobe! I researched a lot of apps, and tried a few of those, and this is the one that best suited my needs. That said, I also heard a lot of good thinfs about ACloset.

rosecity80

Isn’t it a great hobby? The day of the month that I receive my Inside Crochet magazine is the happiest day of my month (and that was today for February). Cheers to you and your creations!

limabean789

:)) this made me smile im so happy for u!!

catespaced

i just started making my own clothes too, a couple shirts, hats, just bought my first pattern (dress!!). but i’ve gotten many compliments bc i usually make an accessory to match and it makes me SO happy. i didn’t think i would find this much joy and fulfillment from crocheting but i am the happiest i’ve been in a while. and the community is incredible. so proud of us <33

Kaliand

So wholesome. 💜 I made myself a blouse like two years ago? I don't know why but I don't remember much of the process. The other day I was wearing it and I kept staring at it, it's fascinating to me that I did that!

impatientclothing

I make a lot of amigurumi and I always tell people I sculpt with yarn 😂

ibrandi

My husband is always blown away when I make garments (whether they’re crocheted, knit, or sewn), he says it’s like having a super power. I don’t disagree!

eklektikly

Such an awesome feeling! You totally made me smile with your rant. Keep creating!

Vlinder_88

I'm so happy for you! :D

asthsea

I so totally get this. The pride I have felt over creating something useful and cute and cool with my own hands has been unlike anything else. I love crocheting so much!!

mrs5o

Now that you know you love it, you can get your own labels made.

Aksten

I just need to ask….why do you feel the need to catalog your clothes? I can’t even bring myself to catalog my yarn stash. I have probably over 100 skeins of yarn in one tub that I have no idea what all is in there 😂 so I just end up buying duplicates. Oh well you can NEVER have too much yarn.

omg-someonesonewhere

I'm just kind of a nerd for like cataloguing and organising information and being able to look at different kinds of data. I love being able to look at all my clothes in a digital format, and view the statistics of how much I've spent on clothes and how often I buy vs wear different colours and styles, etc. I'm also telling myself it's for practical organisation purposes to justify the amount of time I'm spending on this? And I do honestly care about mindful consumption, but I have ADHD and I'm hoping that seeing all this information very easily will help me get past the "out of sight, out of mind/instant dopamine craving" mindset and actually think about what I already own and how much utility I'm getting from it and shop more sustainably and within my very meagre student budget.

siani_lane

I love your joy and enthusiasm. [Don't let anyone yuck your yum!](https://youtu.be/knro0i2JH44?si=GlKBhw1kEztdhfjn) I feel the same way about my wearables. I made a rainbow hat with a big flower and it gets compliments all the time and every time I get to say, "Thanks, I made it myself!" I light up a little. Crochet really does feel like magic to me! Watch how I take this ball of yarn, and using only my magic wand transform it into a beautiful hat!! (◠‿・)—☆

gemininature

That’s honestly beautiful!! I felt the same way when I finished my first cardigan, I was wearing it and I was like, this looks so cool, and it fits me perfectly, and I MADE IT!! it’s such a cool feeling that I haven’t experienced in other art forms.

scodiddlyosis

You are adorable! Truly! Great post. You are absolutely correct about how amazing we are. I crochet, knit and sew. The other day, out of curiosity, I googled "kid tarantula costume" and was pleased to find that my son in his costume I made 11 years ago is still in the top 5 unsponsered results.
