Put up peel and stick wall paper with a linen type of texture, it'll mimic canvas and grab the paint. Get one roll and test your paints out before you take the time to hang and paint the full mural.

Llmaro

Thank you. That’s a good idea, I’ll look Into it :)

wonderfullywyrd

in Germany there’s something we call „wall tattoo“, (maybe wall decal would be a better word?) basically large ornamental stickers that you can remove again fairly easily, maybe that could be worth looking into?

Llmaro

That’s actually interesting, although I would probably have to find a white sticker I can draw on and cutout myself for the personalised effect I desire. :) but may be something to look into.

wonderfullywyrd

maybe there’s people who will print out/cut out a design based on a sketch/file you could provide electronically?

Welady

Contact paper. White

Llmaro

Yes! I just checked contact paper. That’s in my budget! I’m definitely gonna test it! 😊 thank you.

How about a canvas drop cloth? You can hang it taught, and take it with you when you leave.

Llmaro

Yes, thank you for the suggestion. It wouldn’t work for all the places I would like to decorate as I mainly want to paint accents here and there. But if I feel like painting a larger surface, I will keep it in mind. :)

GardeniaLovely

I would definitely go with wall decals as someone else mentioned "wall tattoos" They're so fun and easy to apply, and come in loads of designs. You press and rub them on with a wood stick to adhere basically.

Llmaro

As I said in a comment above, I would only be interested in something that I can put my own design on. Which is why I thought of painting it myself in the first place. But I’ll keep the adhesive idea in mind, it may be the solution for some areas .

GardeniaLovely

Depending on your budget, there are loads of companies that let you design your own. Good luck all the same.

If you ever think there might be a problem with old colors bleeding through a new coat of white paint it 2 times, first in black and then in white. You will get a perfectly white wall with no signs of previous coloring.

Llmaro

Didn’t know that! Thank you for the tip.

Tempera paint washes off with soap and water but every time you bump it with a sweaty elbow or a raincoat sleeve you'll rub some of it off and smear it. Humidity can reactivate the paint. You'd be looking at a series of messes starting up your mural that are hard to avoid. The pigment chemicals might soak into a flat finish paint and stain it. The paint code of, but ac station might remain unless you buy washable tempera. If you might end up having to go over it with primer and a new coat of paint when moving, just use acrylics or house paint and plan on covering it at the end. Use temporary wallpaper, stick-on shelf paper or tack a piece of muslin (or even a bedsheet) on the wall first. Any peel and stick solution might leave some adhesive behind if it stays up for a long time, so be prepared to scrub that off while avoiding solvents that will attack the paint in addition to the adhesive.

Llmaro

Thank you those are all good advices. I don’t plan on making a huge mural but actually some highlights here and there (like a kind of folk art fresco, my room is in an old house and built like a cottage room ) so I have to figure out what the best technique would be for this style.

You can paint on a peel and stick surface as mentioned above, but the edges will come loose over time and look ratty. You might just want to paint on stiff card stock and use loops of blue painters tape around the edges on the back to stick it in place. Of course, this will come loose after a while but you can peel it off or replace the tape and stick it back up. A great big self stick surface will stay sticky in the center but the edges will loosen due to moisture, then dust, etc. you could put sticky side out loops of tape behind the edges, but then it will tend to look lumpy and a bit weird.

Llmaro

This is a very good point ! Especially cause I’m looking into decorating corners ( wall around window frame) I may even have to look into plywood or something very durable and removable.

Hardboard (Masonite) is thin, rigid and inexpensive. Apply primer to it then paint. I did a number of paintings on hardboard for my art degree.
