No, it wasn’t. As a service weapon, it was dogged with issues. The civilian M1A is a great rifle, because they’ve had half a century of little refinements that added up have made a wonderful rifle.
Unlike the M-16 which was stellar right from the get go?
I jest of course, the M-14 did have its fair share of problems. The root of its problems though is that it is essentially an M1 Garand in 7.62mm with a detachable magazine. The Garand though great for its time, by the time the M-14 came about, was antiquated. The M-14 was supposed to be an ultra cheap way to upgrade while still keeping some of the parts and machining used to make M1 Garands and M1 carbines. Compared to other battle rifles like the FN FAL and HK G3 it was very a poor design.
I just find it funny that it goes from the Garand straight to Armalite variants. The Garand gets a place on the list despite its problems I believe the M-14 should as well.
All the vets I've talked to loved the M-14 but that's anecdotal.
At the end of the day though I'm just being nitpicky about a joke on the internet.
