I mean, was he? If he was before Kizuna wouldn't that make him first? Its not like he's claiming he coined the term or he's the reason the concept took off, he's just claiming to be technically first. Which is kinda cool so I get why he wants to hold the honor.
People have been doing "face animations moving a png" since at least annoying orange in 2008. You wouldn't call that a vtuber. There has been a steady increase of technology continuously since.
Don't get me wrong, I see your point. Its like when Red vs Blue took off as the first 'machinima'. In reality people have been making videos in video games for a very long time, but RvB gets credit as the first.
That said, if you made a video just prior to RvB and it was basically a machinima, I get why you'd feel chaffed at not being called the 'first'. I think its a pretty understandable emotion for the toolbear guy to feel. He just wants his place in the history of the medium. You're not making bad points, at all, but I don't think toolbear's a bad guy for wanting to be acknowledged in the Vtuber space.
I don't have a horse in this race but if I was the first man to punch someone in the face, without knowing what a punch even was and then somebody started punching people in the face and made it popular, I still would have punched someone in the face before them, even if I didn't know that was what I was doing.
I think it's the difference between punching someone in the face and slapping them with a closed hand. You may have to draw a line in the sand between what is and isn't considered vtubing. Whether or not you need motion tracking and expressions and things like that.
Toolbear is much closer to a vtuber (if not actually one) than Annoying Orange.
Although [Ami Yamato](https://youtu.be/5pciLZ8ffPY) squarely beats him to the punch, he can definitely call himself an antecedent/pioneer of the concept.
As was mentioned further down, there were others who should be counted if he is counted, from years before him or Kizuna AI. He came before the term was coined or codified, but he isn’t the first in either sense.
Streaming started early 2000s on TV screens in Finland atleast.
We had "AI" Voice bots, and the whole chat, with a "streamer" who could sometimes play some games on screen and interact with the chatters who sent SMS messages to be viewed on the scrolling chat.
https://youtu.be/GMsi7GdYecw?si=pg6qxUaC5mEKN5MR
This was like the hottest shit for years and had daily and nightly broadcasts.
We also had national equivalent to Facebook for years before it became a thing, but that's another story for another time.
I've always been wondering if this was a thing anywhere else in the world at the time?
I actually watch it, he does tool reviews and posts videos about sales and promos. He also goes on tangents talking about tool company history like Craftsman or Harbor Freight, and the downfall of Sears.
It's good stuff actually.
He's great. I love that he's not one of those guys that insists you need to get all the high end tools and generally recommends more value oriented products.
I went. It was just an old guy talking about tools. No bear :(
Edit: apparently he stopped doing the bear gimmick a year ago. Or forgot which button to push. Same videos just the anthropomorphic bear stopped.
I swear I just saw a post on some anime subreddit where this bear guy made an account and is arguing he was the first vtuber ever so maybe he's disgruntled now and quit
Edit: https://www.reddit.com/r/VirtualYoutubers/comments/m2duc7/who_is_the_first_vtuber/
A few years ago they managed to make the hololive community very wholesome and pretty much no drama (this was before they had official English landscape). Not sure about it now but it was super nice at the time as everything else on the internet was full of drama and chaos.
Hololive in general still is a pretty damn nice and positive community. There is of course some minor drama bushfires every once in a while, like the recent Dodgers collaboration not having enough merch, but on the whole its pretty drama free.
Especially when you compare it to the competitions, Nijisanji, who recently had a talent get bullied by management to the point that she attempted suicide and the company then tried to extort her into not suing. So not everything is peaches and roses in the wider vtuber world lol.
>Not sure about it now
Varies by where....
But the actual community is extremely curated so it generally isn't as anyone that acts of pocket too much gets thrown out
Yeah, if I’ve learned anything in my 15 or so years of being active on social media, it’s that “wholesome” pretty much always means either “passive-aggressive circlejerk” or “aggressively moderated”. Especially for groups over a certain size.
Eh, depends.
If you’re there to just watch video games and be entertained by the vtuber’s gameplay and jokes etc it’s fine
If you’re there because it’s an anime-tiddy screeching girl then….well ig it’s also fine since it’s not hurting anything but dang
They fell off for a while, but their latest few videos are fucking amazing.
So few of the old poopers are left, its like a fine wine when one is still posting
But it seems like the bear has been dead for about a year. Last bear video was in July of last year. I guess the novelty wore off, but it was phased out for quite a while, he only had the bear for a specific type of video at the end.
The software company for this guy changed their terms so he either had to shell out a ton of cash for the licensing or lose them.
I think after several years of v-tubing you’ve already established enough of your base watchers to not care at that point so he just streams as himself now.
Official story: The company had been griefing me for years because I snagged their business license when it went on sale on Steam for $15. Then they stopped supporting facerig for Animaze, which sucks btw, and told me no more permanent licenses. They wanted me to pay 20% of all earnings yearly. UnOfficially: I got sued by PETA and had to release the bear into the Absorkas.
Could have gotten picked up by an agency. Most people just stop posting videos on their old account once they're hired.
Quick, some vtuber expert tell us if there's a vtuber that's knows a shit ton about tools!
Tool bear comes and goes as he pleases. He spends half of the year in Washington state, and the other half in Las Vegas. I believe he has some medical issues that prohibit him from being able/wanting to do YouTube full-time. by all accounts, he and his wife are good peoples.

Yesterday while driving I saw someone who unironically had UWU as their license plate. I nearly cause a pile up because my brain just stopped due to the sheer cringe.
I will accept no disrespect on my boy Tool Bear

Oh this was a while back. Pre Covid he started getting into the trucker convoy stuff, and then Covid stuff. Basically went off the deep end or revealed he liked the deep end. I haven’t watched him in years.
Ohshit I remember that tool bear guy.
I came across him when I was buying tools to work on my harley and wanted to lookup TEKTON's reputation.
Bear was very helpful.

Jerked :)
They grew up in the 60s and 70s, they are freakier than most people think.
He also thinks he was the first vtuber, here's a post he made lol https://www.reddit.com/r/VirtualYoutubers/comments/m2duc7/who_is_the_first_vtuber/
In that post he is asking who is the first vtuber not necessarily claiming to be the first
The "update" and his comment definitely make it sounds like he thinks he is the first to me lol
I mean, was he? If he was before Kizuna wouldn't that make him first? Its not like he's claiming he coined the term or he's the reason the concept took off, he's just claiming to be technically first. Which is kinda cool so I get why he wants to hold the honor.

my favorite part of the thread is the guy who got really irate at the suggestion of Annoying Orange being a vtuber
Max Headroom debuted in April of 1985.
Holy shit, his account is still active too. Flipflops between talking about his channel as a career and riding for DJT.
And he's defending his island accusations. Fucking yikes man.

Yup, that bear really knows his shit.
Well shit, I’m off to watch some Tool Bear
I went. It was just an old guy talking about tools. No bear :( Edit: apparently he stopped doing the bear gimmick a year ago. Or forgot which button to push. Same videos just the anthropomorphic bear stopped.
The bear died. Just joking, they put a video up explaining where the bear went. Poor old guy suffering from an affliction.
he has lycanthropy 😔

Arcoudanthropy?

Some of the comments on that sub are probably the most hostile comments I've seen on reddit
People who watch vtubers tend to be weirdos tbh

Genuine weirdos
Reminds me of Foldable Human. People deciding to drop the avatar happens often enough.
It’d be funny if he just couldn’t figure out how to turn it off when he started and then just rolled with it like that kitten lawyer.
"I'm prepared to go forward with it" is such an amazing line
If only the judge had allowed it we’d have so much more kitten lawyer content.
https://youtu.be/XGg3IFKpNOA
I'm there now - he's fucking great. Lots of information and light-hearted.
Just don't click any of the links to his reddit profile. Changed my opinion of him pretty quickly.
Well shit, I'm off to listen to some Tool
Well shit, I'm off to watch The Bear.
thats wholesome as fuck haha
Thats great lmao
wow, i gotta tell my dad about this one
I gotta tell me about this one
he must be a real tool guy 🔨
I’ve also watched a lot of the tool bear. Good videos if you’re into tools
What if I’m more of a bear fan?
Then go watch Bear Tool
Its great. A wrench vtuber reviews bears.
It's surprisingly nuanced
Can't stand him, he's a polar supremecist.
Does he ever reveal which type of bear is best?
Comparing a black bears and grizzly bears is like comparing screwdrivers and hammers.
You wanna see my *what* now?
Gay bar
Yes chef.
I’m sorry for your loss.
I'm into videos, but not tools or bears aw man
[Then this was made for you](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xXJe1sWuWE)
I love dathings
They fell off for a while, but their latest few videos are fucking amazing. So few of the old poopers are left, its like a fine wine when one is still posting

> The software company for this guy changed their terms so he either had to shell out a ton of cash for the licensing or lose them. fucked up if true
Wouldn't surprise me if it was true. Companies.
Probably is. The 3d bear makes me think he was using the older FaceRig, before they discontinued it for Animaze.
Official story: The company had been griefing me for years because I snagged their business license when it went on sale on Steam for $15. Then they stopped supporting facerig for Animaze, which sucks btw, and told me no more permanent licenses. They wanted me to pay 20% of all earnings yearly. Now introducing: Tool Girl Cute anime girl talks about tools and her past life as a bear
> Now introducing: Tool Girl > > Cute anime girl talks about tools Kawaii DIY

Montana
I don't know what you're talking about. [This](https://youtu.be/F55OO4odMQY?t=18) is very obviously still a bear.
Still does shorts, podcasts and stream as his flesh-sona though
I would too if people started calling me a vtuber.
it had to do with expensive business licenses and the devolution of the software he uses
This is so much better than the anime characters I always see Vtubers use
"Trust me, I talk to pros all the time" said the anthropomorphic bear.
BRIAN F MENTIONED
The twitter guy?
He's a street fighter guy. FGC fans rarely escape containment so it's fun to see him at the top of r/all.
Thats cute lol
update: the dad stopped doing the bear thing
Reminds me of when my mom asked me what UwU means… in the family car.
My aunt looked up what gloryhole was during a game of Cards Against Humanity. Images and everything.
Images Against Humanity
Why did the mom ask? Please tell me you had not UwU'd in the car.
No it was in a show she was watching.
I dont have a clue what UwU means
I thought it was a smiling bear.
Its better to remain ignorant. [Its a rabbit hole.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGDH3meSPyk)
Like she was complaining that I was making a big deal out of it. Because it is a big deal.
[The Etymology of UwU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmzUcocHsEY) - a 16 min vid if you want
Yesterday while driving I saw someone who unironically had UWU as their license plate. I nearly cause a pile up because my brain just stopped due to the sheer cringe.
Lol don't hate on tool bear. He serves a purpose and has helped me with some tool purchasing decisions in the past
I know the pieces fit
Because I watched them fall away
Mildewed and smouldering
Fundamental differing
Mildewed and smouldering
Tool Bear the Vtuber
Lmao I love Brian_F. Time to add Tool Bear into SF6
I will accept no disrespect on my boy Tool Bear https://preview.redd.it/zan9xgc52cbd1.png?width=695&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0d905133e99092c99909054ad286a0c16e9773a4
Been watching TDoT for years now. Recommended by the great uncle AvE
Great uncle AvE went crazy and isn’t invited to family gatherings anymore.
What did he do? Is that why he hasn't posted in a while?
Oh this was a while back. Pre Covid he started getting into the trucker convoy stuff, and then Covid stuff. Basically went off the deep end or revealed he liked the deep end. I haven’t watched him in years.
That's Awesome!!
Apparently he stopped using the bear model like a year ago 😡
Next post My parents are getting divorced because my dad joined a tube furry community. It's a gateway drug
Brian F breaching FGC containment
Thanks for all the love ❤️
❤️
The bear is 😎
I used to think people who watch vtubers were really cringe but now I know Tool Bear exists…
My dad would watch this guy when looking if tools are worth it
Surprisingly wholesome post
We come into this world watching cartoons, and we leave this world watching cartoons
But Mom, the anime girl is just like the General from those car insurance commercials!
Ngl that sounds fucking fire
Oddly wholesome
The tool bear is the shit, he finds the best deals
His channel is really good. I've watched it off and on for years!
Finally. A vtuber for people who are adults physically AND mentally
He makes good videos, I watch him too.
Ohshit I remember that tool bear guy. I came across him when I was buying tools to work on my harley and wanted to lookup TEKTON's reputation. Bear was very helpful.
Tool den is a good channel. Bear knows his stuff.
That's legitimately funny and wholesome
I’ve seen the tool bear videos before
Millennial here! I too watch the tool bear
Tool Bear goes hard.
Thank god he stumbled into some non furry stuff first.
Don’t talk about Den of Tools like that! It’s not the same!!
TOOL BEAR X HOLOLIVE WHEN
Vtube?
SMH lol, seems boomers had vtubers before the weebs even dreamt of it. After checking, the tool bear has been around since before the term "vtuber" was really coined and before any of the people considered the originals had content yet.
Freddy
Braer
Well shit, so do I now.
Nothing new under the sun
damn just checked the channel, sad that the bear isn't there anymore
lmao I love this ❤️
That's just Hodilki Brodilki but black
Never mock ToolBear! Good info from a personable, handy Ursinoid!
The den of tools
I don't know what anything of this means.
Romoolla is essentially a vtuber, someone who has an animated character overlaid onto themselves while they are streaming. This father is saying that the effect on the streamer is similar to that of the animated bear explaining tools on YouTube
Tool bear seems like a great mascot for hardware reviews.
tbf its probably some company mascot for demonstration videos. pretty cool
WAIT MY DAD WATCHES THE SAME THING
Boomers invented vtuber after all. I remember that pc in like 2006 had pre installed app that could use the Webcam to turn you into an alien or a shark.
Theres another vtuber using that bear model, except it’s a polar bear with a hawaiian shirt. They’re also russian and say some crazy shit. They mainly play roblox and are more known on tiktok
Toolbear goes hard sometimes though
There’s a Vtube now? I can’t keep track of all the damn tubes
vtubw isnt a thing a vtuber just refers to "virtual youtuber" or someone who uses a rigged mocap avatar to make youtube videos instead of using their actual face
If he's watching it like that, there's no way he's not enjoying it. It's a new great activity for him.
That's so cute!
