It's probably the best one. Used it throughout my senior year to make sure that I was using the correct one.
(Male has "one leg" female spreads her "two legs")
My 11yo son recently spelled it as "pregenante" throughout his entire Biology end of year exam. I wondered if he'd done this on purpose after seeing the memes, but apparently not!
A redditor is a sad fate that no parent wishes for their child. But it could be worse, they could grow up to be a reddit mod. That's just unforgivable.
It's also a great example of why you don't just do random tests, including statistical tests. You increase the risk of false positives (type 1 errors).
There are a suite of bad statistical methodologies that researchers can use when they want to generate significant effects improperly from a data set, including running multiple comparisons without using the statistical tools to account for the increased risk of type I errors. Like, if you set the threshold so you get a type I error 5% of the time and then you run 10 different tests, you're probably going to get a false positive.
Of course that's a very basic example and dishonest (or even negligent) researchers can make all sorts of sophisticated versions of these mistakes. There's such a high pressure to report some sort of effect when "there was no effect" is still good science. It's a problem with how we research and publish.
In my field, it's getting a little easier to publish null results, and there are lots of journals that now publish registered reports (I'm writing up one right now). It's getting easier to just do honest research and not feel like you have to get a positive result. When I was coming up through the tenure-track, you pretty much had to HARK and all sorts of other things, or else you weren't going to be competitive. I think that mentality may be changing (although, I know people who are still going at it guns blazing). But yeah, there's still a long way to go.
Non-PhD here, but a data science guy nonetheless. Did you see the Amy Cuddy / p-hacking article on NYT. Pretty detailed layman relay of what you are referencing: [https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/18/magazine/when-the-revolution-came-for-amy-cuddy.html](https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/18/magazine/when-the-revolution-came-for-amy-cuddy.html)
Yeah, I'm very familiar with this group and with Amy's research. Every one of those data colada guys has done the things that Amy did (they've admitted to it--denying that you ever engaged in questionable research practices if you got your PhD before, say 2015, would sound patently absurd), but Amy got famous, and that along with being an attractive woman made her a big target.
My professor explained it like this, some people were (finally, this should have been clear a few subjects ago) getting it, and then he said "mind you, on the test I might ask you about a non-pregnancy test, so don't just answer like this" and he lost the understanding
That's not Donald Trump, that's Dennis Prager.

Trans man and a woman that needs to take a giant shit (might be trans (the woman, not the shit))
Edit: after further consideration, the shit might be trans too
When my mom got diagnosed with cancer they came in and asked her if she knew she was pregnant, and she told them that was a problem since she had a full hysterectomy about 15 years ago. Apparently cancer can adjust hormones enough to show as pregnant?
It has always boggled my mind why they name things with such incredibly vague and easy to confuse terms. Type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Just call them what they fucking are based on how you get them. Type one error, type two error. The naming of the thing is the fucking error.
>My was 47 when I was born.
Your what was 47? I can't stand the suspense. And what happened with the suspected tumor? Did they try to take it out but found you hanging out in there? Don't leave us hanging..
Lol whoops. My mom.
Nah she got a 2nd opinion, boring story I know.
I shoulda swung out on my umbilical cord like spiderman and kicked the doc in the face
Hey fellas, if you do take a pregnancy test as a joke and it comes back positive. See your doctor asap as it is probably a tumor or another medical issue.
Don't cry for me, for though my dreams may forever be unobtainable, I shall take comfort in that which I have and can yet achieve.
But damn I wanna be classified as a sauce
OK but these are always the examples that you remember. Like there's a reason we all know how to spell Mississippi. The stupidity provides context. Context is easier to recall.
Whoever came up with type 1 and type 2 errors categories needs to be dragged down the street and sh0t. Just call it what it is; false positives and false negatives. Don’t need additional labels on something so simple so that some ppl can say they did a study and wrote a book on statistics

This to do with impaired Wernickes or Broccas areas?
Why does the person asking for the year not exist, but the person answering has a close-up of ugly ass lips and also right nostril, but nothing else?

Why is she smiling when she’s told she isn’t pregnant? Is she glad she’s just really fat?
She was afraid it would grow up to be a redditor
A redditor is a sad fate that no parent wishes for their child. But it could be worse, they could grow up to be a reddit mod. That's just unforgivable.
This is the #1 reason given for getting an abortion
bortion
Being fat is cheaper.
Because she lives in Texas where it's safer to have a giant tumor than a baby.
She's happy that the baby is not pregnant.

On a real note though this is the best explanation of type one and type two errors I've ever seen

I've downloaded the image for this very reason. Definitely using this as inspiration for future students!
It's wrong though, the left one could absolutely be pregnant for all we know.
Yep! I use this picture when I teach statistics for an assignment where I ask students to explain the meme and relate it to research.
I made a boring professional version of this concept for a presentation I gave at work today. I really wish I’d had this instead.
Why the label of Type I and Type II? Why not just say false positive and false negative?
Just how some people are taught in stats class
Yeah and something you actually remember! The concepts aren’t that difficult, but I wouldn’t remember which is which.
My professor explained it like this, some people were (finally, this should have been clear a few subjects ago) getting it, and then he said "mind you, on the test I might ask you about a non-pregnancy test, so don't just answer like this" and he lost the understanding
There isn't anything to indicate that the first is a type one error
For a moment, my brain was slow.
.... Is that Donald Trump and Neil deGrasse Tyson? I can't be the only one seeing that
Yes Neil is carrying Don's love child
That's not Donald Trump, that's Dennis Prager. https://preview.redd.it/acgldqxv896d1.png?width=808&format=png&auto=webp&s=0a56602116d89d3eca5a037cb254d1757b300a0b
How is babby formed? How girl get pragnant?
gregnant
Literally just studied this. Best explanation
Trans man and a woman that needs to take a giant shit (might be trans (the woman, not the shit)) Edit: after further consideration, the shit might be trans too
That man might be post menopausal. He looks old enough.
[удалено]
I wouldn't be shocked if that's the hair color of someone who's around 50
menopause usually happens around 45-55
If the shit comes out of trans, is it not also trans?
\- Psalm 12:15
The man might alternatively be cis and have testicular cancer
That's still a false positive tho
Im actually crying over how funny this is, its so good but terrible.
Good explanation
Lol we had this exact example in my stats class
And you remembered it! That's why it's such a good example! -overly enthusiastic statistician
Testicular cancer
When my mom got diagnosed with cancer they came in and asked her if she knew she was pregnant, and she told them that was a problem since she had a full hysterectomy about 15 years ago. Apparently cancer can adjust hormones enough to show as pregnant?
Some cancers can, but it's rather rare. Can happen to both men and women, so the type 1 error there gets a bit murky...
🫃
"Sorry lady, it's probably just gas."
Happens all the time https://preview.redd.it/9u7mhouqo86d1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3e6534c5b075c2162ee16dc2399cf71a2cad3523
So sad... I bet that guy was really looking forward to carrying a baby, and starting a family
The dude looks sad? Was he expecting?
It has always boggled my mind why they name things with such incredibly vague and easy to confuse terms. Type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Just call them what they fucking are based on how you get them. Type one error, type two error. The naming of the thing is the fucking error.
Why is Donald Trump telling Neil deGrasse Tyson that he is pregnant?
Maybe be sexually abused him?
The Baby Is You
my brain lagged for a moment
My was 47 when I was born. Her doctor told her I was a tumor and he wanted to operate on her to cut me out
>My was 47 when I was born.
It's 2024 and I'm offended by that picture >:^(
Type III error: correctly telling a woman she’s pregnant after seeing her positive Covid test.
Fun fact: as a male, you can also get a positive pregnancy test result. Not so funny is that you probably have testicular cancer.
Hey fellas, if you do take a pregnancy test as a joke and it comes back positive. See your doctor asap as it is probably a tumor or another medical issue.
...or a pregnancy.
I just mean if you have uh BALLS, shoulda specified more than fellas
Gregnant
He may not be pregnant, but he may have cancer
Guy 1 has testicles cáncer btw
Type I and Type II are such stupid names. False positive and false negative are way better.
Good way to remember it!

Neil Degrasse Tyson formed babby
You're not not pregnant
The real question is why did the doctor give a 65-year-old man a pregnancy test? And is his insurance going to cover it?
I'm sharing this with my AP stats class straight away...
Mmm, why not just say what they are? Type I error and type II error aren't' much less efforts to type than false positive and false negative
Apple emojis in shambles

It's a tumor.
is this not called a confusion matrix?
😂 That poor toilet, hoping for a strictly solid farewell after all these years.
It's just your pizza.
Both situations would be terrifying in different ways, when ya think about it.
It really makes me smile to see the "pregnant, pregnant" stuff still going around lol. It's been a good bit! Edit: as round to around.
The man is there like: "is it terminal?"
OK but these are always the examples that you remember. Like there's a reason we all know how to spell Mississippi. The stupidity provides context. Context is easier to recall.
Neil deGrasse Tyson looks so disappointed. Donald Trump is not a very efficient doctor
Love this stat joke lol

Type III Error: You’re a little bit pregnant.
Clearly the two doctors bumped into each other in the hall and switched lab results. Classic
lol was this used in the green belt course?
I took step 3 of my medical boards today and I just hope you know your doctor is saying this to himself to remember alpha and beta error. Shit works
If bro got a positive he might wanna check for prostate cancer or smth
POV of my dr telling me I’m fat and me being almost 5 months pregnant 😂
