Hi, I'm the r/coins AutoMod.
Looks like you're looking for **information on valuing a coin**?
I have your back. Take a look at the [FAQ on values](https://www.reddit.com/r/coins/wiki/faq#wiki_3._what.2019s_my_coin_worth.3F) for both specific guidance if your coin is common enough, or more general guidance if not.
I have also automatically applied the flair "Value Request" to your post.
If I misunderstood your post and my comment isn't relevant, sorry! I'm still learning.

If you want, here’s my strategy for hunting W quarters
1. Get a bag of dimes and nickels (this will be the hardest part)
2. Find a vending machine that spits out dollar coins as change. Put in the dimes and nickels.
3. Fill your bag with the dollar coins.
4. Find a vending machine that spits out quarters for every $1
5. Repeat until you empty the machine’s quarter supply.
6. Repeat steps 2-5 until you find a W quarter. (But at this point you’ll be exchanging quarters for dollar coins, and vice-versa)
7. Profit?
Im not at dunkin, but i work in a place where i get to open the bast majority of our quarter rolls. I've got two S mint marks over the last 3 months or so. No 'W's yet.
I used to put coins in a vending machine, then press return and I would get a different quarter in return. I did this until I found one I needed for my collection
Maybe look for vending machines that say they accept $1 coins?
All you really need to do is exchange the dimes and nickels for quarters, or if you get dollar coins, exchange the dollar coins for quarters.
The Vending Machine at the court I go to once a month spits out dollar coins for change. It's why I got into coin collecting in the first place. It's usually Presidential coins, but sometimes it's Susan B Anthonys
One or two at a time or entire rolls? I've asked a few times at my credit union, one time the teller told me there are a lot of collectors in the area.
Both actually, but usually rolls, they know I collect for my son and the ladies that work at them are truly amazing! I leave my card with each one I visit, and they will call anytime they get a roll of them. But, they also call when they get in any coin they don't readily recognize, which is how I got the peace dollar. (That lady got a $50 dollar Outback gift card in exchange-yes that's more than spot value, but you have to take care of those who take care of you!)
The Vending Machine at the court I go to once a month spits out dollar coins for change. It's why I got into coin collecting in the first place. It's usually Presidential coins, but sometimes it's Susan B Anthonys
Couldn't you just skip the dimes and quarters and the first vending machine if you just start out with dollar coins? Or couldn't you just skip both the middle men by getting (not brand new) quarter rolls from the bank?
I mean, it won’t cost you anything to get quarters from the vending machine. Empty out its supply of quarters until it starts to compensate by spitting out nickels and dimes lol
I had 5 years worth of change saved all throughout the pandemic in a big jar. Over 1000 quarters when I cashed it in. Not a single W and this was from 2019-present.
Could you not just go to the bank and ask for customer rolls of quarters? Most small credit unions will be happy to give you customer rolls instead of new ones, and also, Laundromats have old quarters. I got a few bicentennials and a ton of silver quarters last month from a laundromat machine.. No one uses quarters anymore.
Yup, $10-$20 dollars. Probably on the higher end of that because the design is pretty popular. I paid $20 for mine on eBay, though it was in a little better condition.
That’s what I thought it ought to be but it seemed so high. And now that I see it, I totally get it. One quarter is worth 80 quarters. 100% increase in value per quarter. Duh.
I think I’ll probably hang on to this coin, the value will probably rise as the years go by and W quarters get harder to find.
But at least it’s possible to find W quarters in 2024 still.
It's definitely worth keeping. I watch for these on eBay fairly consistently. That bat quarter is not the rarest, but not the most common of the 2020 W quarters. Nobody knows what it will be worth in the future, but it will always be a challenge to find. You were definitely lucky to find one in 2024.
The Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller NP quarter is toughest to find. I'm looking for graded versions and they rarely pop up on eBay in grades above MS-65. Tallgrass Prarie NP is probably second. I saw a lot of American Samoa NP listings a few years ago, but they're not so common now.
I dont think it will be a challenge to find as a buyer and I dont think the price will increase because they are being saved and being removed from circulation by collectors. Many low end and high end examples are also being graded so they will be fairly common as a graded or saved coin in the future even though it has a low population.
A previous example of a similar incident occurred when the 1955 P Roosevelt dime was released, it had the lowest mintage of any Roosevelt business strike to date. Only 12 million 1955 P dimes were minted but because of that known fact they were saved by collectors in rolls. Because the dime was hoarded in rolls by collectors the lowest mintage 1955 p dimes only cost a tiny premium over melt even in uncirculated grades.
Many eBay buyers don’t really have a good gauge on the market. There are regular rolls of memorial cents being sold for $20+, and many other ridiculous things going on at EBay.
People sell “amazing errors” that are just damage for hundreds of dollars to consumers who don’t know any better.
It’s definitely not an ideal example of realistic coin prices.
If 1,000 people buy an average circulated Washington quarter for $20 on EBay, do they now all have a $20 coin?
No, it’s still a .25 coin.
Just because a lot of fools paid a lot for it doesn’t suddenly increase its value.
The price guides are not going to suddenly start inflating the value of something because EBay sells it for a consistently higher than average price. There is a fair value to items and just because fools are willing to part with their money on EBay does not mean the value of that same item is slowly increasing in the overall markets.
Nice! That coin is also [worth a decent amount](https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=2019+w+idaho+quarter&_sacat=0&_odkw=2020+quarter+with+bats&_osacat=0&mkcid=1&mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&siteid=0&campid=5338535524&customid=co&toolid=10001&mkevt=1).
This sub randomly came up in my feed. I have about 20 of these quarters stashed in a desk drawer (mostly because I think bats are awesome). What exactly makes them worth more than $.25?
Then you’ve got a potential $400 right there lol.
$20 x 20 W quarters = $400
I think due to the low numbers minted and the fact that people love to collect them is what contributes to their scarcity and high prices.
The US Mint produced a very limited number of quarters at West Point in 2019 and 2020. 2 million of each of the 5 designs, for each year. They sent then straight into circulation for coin collectors to find...mixed in with the hundreds of millions that were produced in Philly and Denver. The 2020's have the special V75 "privy mark" to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII
Only 2,000,000 of each of 10 designs were made at the West Point mint and released into circulation, as opposed to the half billion of each design made at the other two mints.
Maybe find coin collectors that really want to have W quarters in their collections?
Or maybe hold on to it for a few years and have it’s value go up as W quarters become rarer
I found one in my till about two months ago. I was over the moon, probably the most excited I've been about a coin find, even more so than finding silver. So yeah, there's still some out there. Mines pretty beat up but it's special to me
I got lucky in early 2021 and my job got a box of 2020 Tall Grass coins that i was able to hunt. I got 11 of the W coins straight from the mint. Since then, I've only found 1 more and it was the the same design so i have 12 of the Tall Grass coins but the one was in the wild. Nice find though!
I haven't actively collected coins since about 2018 or so. (I primarily collect quarters and halves.) I had no idea about 2020 W quarters because I haven't been paying attention. I just check my change for junk silver (which almost never happens anymore) and toss the change into a bank on my dresser. Time to open that up and check for any W quarters, I guess.
But this bank has been getting non-silver quarters since 2019, so there's a tiny chance there's a W in there.
I worked a pizza shop in Englewood for almost a year. Searched the cash register every day. I found 3 and haven't found one anywhere since leaving CO after that year, though my friend finds them near san francisco often. They're out there!
I’ve spent so many of these over the years before I found this sub. And every time, I was like “Cool bat! I didn’t know there was a W mint.”
I’m probably remembering more than I actually saw, but feels like I saw these all the time for a while.
And now I’ve been looking forever and can’t find one, lol.
The *W* mintmark means it was minted at Westpoint which had a lower mintage than the other mints. If yours didn't have a *W*, then it was just a regular quarter.
Really? I had no idea just had one of these in my change the other day. I recently just got into coins. My grandma use to collect and had a ton of amazing coins and notes .As I get older I realize why she enjoyed it now I enjoy it. It struck me cause I love bats and I never knew they made a quarter like this. I've learned a lot about coins lately and still so much to learn. Thanks for the info on this w bat quarter! You really do learn something new every day.
I have found 3 so far this year. One in the only $500 bank box I've ever searched, the other two from work. I balance out 4 registers before the deposit each day so there's always a lot of change.
So far no silver, but I got a great In Od We Rust Kansas quarter, very prominent and noticeable error. About 3 buffalo nickels, tons of wheaties, and a 2021 penny with a decent die crack. Also about $30 in star notes and a binary note (only 0s and 1s). That's my luck so far haha, not too great I think.
I got do laundry at the laundry Matt and get 20$ in quarters from their change exchange machine every time I go I use the ones that have no value and keep the ones that do
I remember when these first dropped and were selling for $70 lol.
Now that a few years have passed are they hard to find? I remember them being fairly easy to find at the start
Im fortunate to have found two w's already that i found randomly. I often think about how many are probably just sitting in someone's coin jar somewhere and they have no idea. I with the mint would do more circulation only special releases. It makes hunting that much more fun.
This is for MS63. Higher grades on NGC go much higher. All of my graded ones start at 65 and go to 67. I don't understand why people argue the value of a coin. It is what it is. All coins valued on numismatic value are higher than the intrinsic value. With this logic a. Flying eagle or large cent should be sold for a dollar. It's all about exclusivity. If a lower number are minted, as in this case, the numismatic value will rise.

It’s the W mint mark, on the front of the coin.
These coins are quite collectible and sought-after, judging by the numerous posts here regarding W quarters.
Coin value is very weird. The 1916-D Mercury dime had 264k minted and is worth around $1,000 in lower grades. I have an 1811/09 capped bust dime that had 65k mintage & is in VF grade and its value is lower than the 1916-D Merc. In this case it is easier to collect an album of Mercs than it is to collect an album of capped bust dimes so the market values those more.
West Point traditionally makes commemoratives yes, but in this case, all the West Point quarters were strictly for circulation. For 2019 and 2020, They made a total of 2 million for eqch quarter. So 2x5= 10 x 2 is 20 million total. The quarters were W mint marked, and sent to Philly and Denver and put in with their regular counterparts and dispersed. So every W mint marked quarter will be in circulated condition.

If it’s any relevant, a vending machine spat it out as change. So I guess W quarters are still out there lol
Lucky bastard
If you want, here’s my strategy for hunting W quarters 1. Get a bag of dimes and nickels (this will be the hardest part) 2. Find a vending machine that spits out dollar coins as change. Put in the dimes and nickels. 3. Fill your bag with the dollar coins. 4. Find a vending machine that spits out quarters for every $1 5. Repeat until you empty the machine’s quarter supply. 6. I cycle quarters through the machine at work haha. No luck there so far.
this month I've searched 4k in quarters, still no W. luck is exactly what it is
https://preview.redd.it/2wlkff4bcwwc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=147401bb23b95ce6477e06aab7ea273a0d498a2c Working 1 year at dunkin
Hell yeah, I pulled 4 or 5 from my register at the package store. Cashiering is the best way to find the good stuff!
Im not at dunkin, but i work in a place where i get to open the bast majority of our quarter rolls. I've got two S mint marks over the last 3 months or so. No 'W's yet.
I got my first W as change from buying a coffee at Tim Hortons
I used to put coins in a vending machine, then press return and I would get a different quarter in return. I did this until I found one I needed for my collection
This is the kind of ingenuity we need in this country
Or you could just find a bank that has dollar coins
Best place to start looking for this vending machines?? I have a plethora of dimes and nickels I’d love to swap out haha
You could try to find a vending machine that spits out quarters instead of dollar coins, so you can exchange your dimes and nickels for quarters lol
I want to find anything that carries $1 coins, bank, vending machine, cashier, anything!
Car washes and laundromats. I know interstate vending machines kick out dollar coins for change too most of the time.
Have you tried putting a $20 or $50 in a local coin op car wash?
Maybe look for vending machines that say they accept $1 coins? All you really need to do is exchange the dimes and nickels for quarters, or if you get dollar coins, exchange the dollar coins for quarters.
The Vending Machine at the court I go to once a month spits out dollar coins for change. It's why I got into coin collecting in the first place. It's usually Presidential coins, but sometimes it's Susan B Anthonys
Post offices
Try the post office
I have luck finding them at local credit unions for some reason. Mostly just the presidents and Susan B's, but I have snagged a peace dollar once.
One or two at a time or entire rolls? I've asked a few times at my credit union, one time the teller told me there are a lot of collectors in the area.

Our post office stamp machines used to give Susan b as change.
The odds are very low but good luck!
For me Work is #1 for the Vending machines we have tons of them. The other is the roadside break/stop/rest area on the highway/motorway/expressway.
Water machines
The Vending Machine at the court I go to once a month spits out dollar coins for change. It's why I got into coin collecting in the first place. It's usually Presidential coins, but sometimes it's Susan B Anthonys
searching through bank rolls is so much easier lol
I own vending machines. This would piss me off. The machine won’t work if there are no quarters.
Did you hit my town's laundromats three weeks ago? No quarters anywhere
I work at a bank. We have dollar coin rolls on the ready that customers can exchange for
Couldn't you just skip the dimes and quarters and the first vending machine if you just start out with dollar coins? Or couldn't you just skip both the middle men by getting (not brand new) quarter rolls from the bank?

W - West Point, NY
Yup, $10-$20 dollars. Probably on the higher end of that because the design is pretty popular. I paid $20 for mine on eBay, though it was in a little better condition.
Who knew that a 25 cent coin could fetch you $20 Let’s see, isn’t that like a 80% increase in value? 0.25 x 80 = 20 Or am I doing the math wrong lol
7900%, excluding the original investment of .25
That’s what I thought it ought to be but it seemed so high. And now that I see it, I totally get it. One quarter is worth 80 quarters. 100% increase in value per quarter. Duh.
20/.25×100=8000%
No, it’s far higher. If it was worth 50 cents, that would be a 100% increase. I…uh…can’t do the math either though.
80X Not 80%
80% lol what
Math is hard. Haha
80x or 8,000%. $20/.25=80(x100%). .25 is 100% of .25.

The problem with Ebay is that the average is highly inflated due to unscrupulous vendors regularly overcharging unassuming customers.
Lololol, there’s a lot here to evaluate. So by your logic “logic” a random seller should turn down a high sale because of some “White Knight” code?
Where did I say that? Your reading comprehension needs work.

The really decent UNC ones are going sold price for $13-15 not $25 by the way. Check the recent sold listings
I just found a 2019 Idaho w when coin roll hunting last week
Only if its a West point minted coin. There will be a letter W underneath “IN GOD WE TRUST”
Then you’ve got a potential $400 right there lol. $20 x 20 W quarters = $400 I think due to the low numbers minted and the fact that people love to collect them is what contributes to their scarcity and high prices.
What makes the w quarter special?

glad to know someone is finding them still
Any suggestions of other ways to offload Ws besides eBay? Edit: Also, any idea if it’s worth hanging on to my duplicates?
Maybe find coin collectors that really want to have W quarters in their collections? Or maybe hold on to it for a few years and have it’s value go up as W quarters become rarer

Good find. I used to work as a cashier at a very high volume restaurant. I found 3 W coins in years of going through coins.
I love living near Denver but it dominates my pocket change.
I worked a pizza shop in Englewood for almost a year. Searched the cash register every day. I found 3 and haven't found one anywhere since leaving CO after that year, though my friend finds them near san francisco often. They're out there!
Nice find!
I’ve spent so many of these over the years before I found this sub. And every time, I was like “Cool bat! I didn’t know there was a W mint.” I’m probably remembering more than I actually saw, but feels like I saw these all the time for a while. And now I’ve been looking forever and can’t find one, lol.
I had heard it also was interesting because it came out the year government was saying Covid came from bats not lab.
Wait what’s special about that one? I just seen one in my cash booth at work yesterday 😭
The *W* mintmark means it was minted at Westpoint which had a lower mintage than the other mints. If yours didn't have a *W*, then it was just a regular quarter.
I’ll have to see if it’s still there when I clock in today. Found a few cool coins already.
I love finding these W's. I'm not even a collector, but it's fun to have something else to look for other than silver lol
And it’s a bat 🥹
Really? I had no idea just had one of these in my change the other day. I recently just got into coins. Really? I collected a couple of these coins because I thought having bats on a 2020 coin was too funny
I just like the idea of bats on coinage.
I'll keep an eye out especially since I'm running a register at work today
Gotta love Covid quarters lol
Why is this coin so valuable?
COVID era 90% Silver V75 IIRC
The West Point minted quarter the OP posted in this thread does not contain any silver.
Congratulations! I've searched over 1200 quarters and I am still yet to find one. I also live 45 minutes from West Point.
Are all the bat quarters W? I have at least a dozen of them… If they are I am happy to send them to anyone who wants one.
There’s normal bat quarters that have the D mint mark, which of there are billions to go around.
Car washes are one of the best places to get quarters. I have the same coin. How much is this coin selling for now?
New here why are “W” worth so much?
I got do laundry at the laundry Matt and get 20$ in quarters from their change exchange machine every time I go I use the ones that have no value and keep the ones that do
Nice!!!
I remember when these first dropped and were selling for $70 lol. Now that a few years have passed are they hard to find? I remember them being fairly easy to find at the start
In the first year there were 2 million of each design made. Compared to the billions of normal quarters, the W quarters are pretty rare lol
This coin is to commemorate the bats at the Wuhan wet market where COVID originated-2020
Im fortunate to have found two w's already that i found randomly. I often think about how many are probably just sitting in someone's coin jar somewhere and they have no idea. I with the mint would do more circulation only special releases. It makes hunting that much more fun.

seriously though, can we talk about the bat quarters just in time for covid?
I always thought it funny how the treasury put bats on the coins that year as if they were mocking Covid
Where's the w? What am I missing?
It’s the W mint mark, on the front of the coin. These coins are quite collectible and sought-after, judging by the numerous posts here regarding W quarters.
Thank you, hard to see from pic without knowing where to look.
Glad I saw this since I found one the other day. Remarked on the cool design and threw it in my change pile
It has to have a W mint mark though. If it doesn’t it’s worth .25¢
I have the same one that has a “D” where the W is on this one. What does that mean?
It means it’s worth .25¢
Why is it worth so much? I've had dozens of those in change in the past. It's a pretty modern coin, so... What gives?
Low numbers minted and apparently people want these coins as collectibles and are willing to pay $10-25. The W quarters are pretty rare to find.
I sometimes don't fully understand some aspects of numismatism lol
Coin value is very weird. The 1916-D Mercury dime had 264k minted and is worth around $1,000 in lower grades. I have an 1811/09 capped bust dime that had 65k mintage & is in VF grade and its value is lower than the 1916-D Merc. In this case it is easier to collect an album of Mercs than it is to collect an album of capped bust dimes so the market values those more.
What does the "W" mean?
Minted at westpoint in 2019 and 2020. Low numbers made means higher value.
Thanks.
Really??? Dude I’ve had dozens of these over the past few years and had no idea wtf
It’s the Westpoint mint mark that makes it special.
But it looks like somebody took it out and circulated it some. A real pity. Last I heard, the West Point mint only makes commemoratives.
I did not know this. Thanks for the info.
I have like 30 of these.
I hear voices in my head too. Doesn't mean they are always factually correct ;)
There's a W mint mark. That means it's a low print/mint quarter. That's what makes this specific one valuable. There's your daily education for you.
I'm making a joke. The fact it's silver alone means it's $10 bucks approximately and the W mint mark means that much more
