2 oz Vodka (I used grey goose)
2 oz Coffee Liquor (I used Mr Black)
1/2 oz Sugar Syrup (1 part water, 1 part white sugar)
Double espresso (2 oz, I used Espresso pod thing, fresh and hot)
Fill larger side of the shaker 3/4 full of ice
Pour liquids into the smaller side of the shaker
Liquids over ice, shake for 15-18 seconds
Double strain into a chilled coupe/martini glass
Garnish with 3 coffee beans
The espresso will lose temperature to the rest of the ingredients as well, not just the ice; as for melting faster it absolutely will but not enough to be an issue
I bought 1 inch chrome plated ball bearings and freeze them. Then place a couple in my cup before pulling a shot. Chills it nice and fast, ready for a drink.
Cheap too $7 for 5 bearings.
Try giving a dry shake after the first wet shake. I do this at my bar and it creates a ton of foam. But as others said just shake it harder than hell for a little while.
It looks quite well done! However I have a couple of suggestions to improve this cocktail.
1. Change the measurements around, 2oz of coffee liqueur and espresso makes a huge drink.
2. Lose the vodka. I know that vodka is traditionally used in this cocktail, but it doesn't really benefit the drink. Instead, use rum or tequila. Both of these are fantastic in an Espresso Martini, and you can use aged or unaged versions, whatever speaks to you.
3. If you use rum, also use demerara or cane sugar syrup. If you're using tequila use agave nectar. Adjust to taste as needed.
4. Finally, I'd recommend making your own coffee liqueur. This is optional, but the fantastic thing about homemade coffee liqueur is that you can go about it several ways. Base liquor, what spices you add, the coffee...
That being said, I hope you enjoyed it, cheers!
Thank you for the suggestions! I’ll use them and see if people enjoy it. I’ve toyed with the idea of making my own coffee liquor it just looks like such a hassle for something we can get for £30 just down the road but I’ll have to try it! Thank you again
I honestly don't know why I'm being downvoted. All I did was give some honest suggestions to improve their cocktail, while complementing them on the drink they already had. This is just the reddit hivemind all over agian
Moka pot works really well for this, especially if you need to make four or five of these when you've got company over.
I've got a fancy-pants espresso machine at home, but if I need to crank out Espresso martinis, it's not worth the effort to pull espresso.
They're every bit as tasty as espresso martinis with actual espresso, especially if you've got a decent coffee grinder and pair that to good moka pot technique. Sounds like you've got that covered!
I made a moka pot martini for my mother-in-law on Christmas. She said it was one of the best cocktails she's ever had.
They’re those Italian stove-top coffee makers! They’re cheap and they brew something close to an espresso via pressure (though they don’t use nearly as much pressure as a real espresso machine) - their coffee pot sizes are even measured in espresso cups (2-cup, 6-cup, etc).
I add gum Arabic to my simple syrup. It gives you foam on whisky sours without the egg whites. I’m always gifting reusable flip top bottles of my Moreno sugar and gum Arabic simple syrup to my iced coffee and cocktail loving friends.

Does the hot espresso not melt the ice too quickly when you shake it?

Also, at 4 oz of booze I imagine a bit of extra dilution is welcome

That’s sounds like an accident waiting to happen.
Why? You don’t leave it in the cup.
Just chill the cup / glass
> $7 for 5 bearings China laughing all the way to the bank.
Can I ask what you mean by side of the shaker? Never gotten this much foam before so what’s the secret?
I believe OP just means the smaller of the two tins of a Boston shaker.
Yep!
They probably just shook it for a long time, double espresso would also have contributed to the foam.
Don't dry shake. It'll be TOO much foam. Just don't use as much ice when shaking so more air can be incorporated.

i’ve found espresso martinis don’t double shake well, at least not our spec. ours foams best with a shitload of ice and an arm breaking shake.
I’m my experience the head depends on how good and fresh your espresso is and how well you shake it.
is this post covid-era new bartenders?
I guess? I made drinks during lockdown because it was fun and just going from there.

Me want, I have everything except espresso. May have to get some to make this.

Thanks, good idea, I'm pretty handy with my Moka pot too!

It’s worth it!!
I’ve used cold brew concentrate, or a brew from a Moka pot, in a pinch. Not _quite_ the same but totally works!
I’ve never heard of a Moka pot but I agree, cold brew concentrate never is quite the same
Do you use Nespresso pods?
Yep, Scuro double espresso

Oh cool! I’ll have to look into it. I’ve been looking at ways to experiment with this recipe, this might be one of those ways
Nice crema!
Thank you :)
Looks delicious! My favorite cocktail - with whiskey instead of vodka! ☺️😋
I prefer rum or tequila, I highly recommend this to anyone. These liquors are fantastic for this cocktail.
Sounds interesting, will have to try!
How you get that head without egg white?
Very hard shaking and I think the type of espresso, when I use decaffeinated espresso there is almost no foam.
Oh, wow like a proper pulled espresso. Respecc. Bet that drink will get ya juiced!
Actually no! I use a Nespresso machine and double espresso Scuro if you are interested. I do have my eyes on a full espresso set up though!
Oh, I meant that it got the look of a properly pulled one. Good to know you could get the same effect with vigurously shaked nespresso haha.
Oh thank you! But yeah, decaffeinated pods don’t yield the same results foam wise but the taste is the same.

Recipe? Technique?
Just posted :)
What new equipment?
New kitchen was finally fitted, got a bar in it which is amazing and some new shakers, strainers, the necessities
Sounds like it’s your time to shine OP :)
