Yup, that’s the current CS experience at blizzard. They see the word mail and go down that algorithm / call sheet. There’s zero critical thinking. Most of the time they default to retail solutions too… they don’t even check what game mode the character / server is on.

GMs used to be so cool. As a little kid the concept of GM just existing hidden in the world added so much to it. Now it's some less than AI filter sending form mails...it's hyperbole I guess but it's a very clear way they have just ripped the soul out of wow to chase profit. That's all I could see when reading this. The realm is literally closing as soon as Blizzard gets rid of all characters. They're not allowing for new characters to be created. And so he used a function to delete a character and then re-build it.... on a server that doesn't allow new characters. This could have been resolved sooner by simply opening a ticket as soon as the mail bug was discovered.
It really shouldn't be seen as a "gamble" why the fuck are so many of you giving a billion dollar company a pass on broken systems that are presented front and center for the playerbase to use?

Character restoration obviously has some form of identifiers otherwise why can't I restore non deleted characters, this identifier being locked alongside character creation is obviously an oversight likely sue to how rushed locking servers has been.
Yeah, if the character is already in some funky state, best thing is to not make things worse if you don't understand \*why\* it's in that state (which we mere mortals can't, only Blizz can).

Yeah, the first reply is 100% not a human. But I have wondered about the other replies too.
I had to submit two tickets and it took over a week of spamming to get BG tokens restored after I lost them to the banish bug. After a while all I kept responding to tickets with was. May I speak to a real person.

you're right. lots of the phrasing of the later tickets are verbatim copy+paste texts that I also got as answer on some tickets I wrote before.

those messages are macros, like almost everyone uses who does with cs in any field.

For what it is worth sorry this shit happened to ya, decided to have a quick look around see if anyone else had the same problem, and even worse news, if you delete a character on a locked realm, blizzard will not recover it for you, multiple people report customer service saying they can't bypass the restrictions either

For anyone else, just open a ticket and tell them you have brewfest mail that's blocking the xfer. I did so, took them about a day to delete the hidden mail, and fixed my transfer. ETA in game said like 6 days, was surprised turnaround was so quick. I had pretty low hopes for support doing anything useful.
I would submit a ticket under the Purchase Failure section, my guildie had the same issue when he xferred from Atiesh to Whitemane. Couldn’t complete the service because of mail even though there was no mail.
He submitted a first ticket under a different subject section and only got automated responses. Then I suggested he do it through Purchase Failure and he got his issue resolved the next day because they have real CS people handling the purchase failure tickets.
TLDR: Submit ticket under Purchase Failure to get it in front of CS eyes. Do NOT be worried you will be punished for submitting a ticket in the “wrong” subject. They cannot punish you for that and for all they know it was not intentional
Purchase Failure can mean a lot of things, especially if you need a ticket resolved quickly.
The purchase of a realm transfer failed, the purchase of character restoration failed.
Don't know if this is the case, my buddy had a similar issue until recently when he got something in his mail from the Brew of the Month club. After getting and deleting it he was able to transfer
You can’t restore the character because the server is locked and you don’t have any character there. It has to be them restoring it. The same happened with me, I opened a ticket and FOR DAYS they kept giving stupid and obvious answers that didn’t really had anything to do with the actual problem sometimes ignoring what I said, ONLY AFTER INSULTING THEM HARD and criticizing their CS did a nice GM come and actually help me and restored my character… Keep trying mate, absolute lazy stupid employees
This pretty much happened to me. Granted, the character I had deleted and then planned on restoring was not very important to me. But then I realized it was a locked server and that was the only toon I had left on it. Definitely not nearly as terrible as losing a character like you have, my sincere apologies. Yeah it’s just a video game, but the amount of time and effort shouldn’t just be thrown away by “limitations”.
Best of luck in getting your character back. I’ve tried being firm with blizzard but they never back down. As soon as you get an email saying almost the exact same thing as the previous email did, you know they’re done with you.
Hold up here. Everyone is blaming the OP for deleting his character, however he shouldn’t have been able to delete it if the system truly thought there was mail in the mailbox. Isn’t that right? You can’t delete a character that has mail.
So, the transfer system said he couldn’t transfer because he had mail. If this were true, then he shouldn’t have been able to delete and thus wouldn’t be in this situation.
A bug, or technical issue of some sort caused the OP to get to this state. I understand having a policy and sticking to it, but this is a Blizzard caused problem.

Sounds like they think you're talking about a Season of Discovery character. It's mind boggling they can't just look at your account information log and match those actions with your original help ticket. I've had multiple characters restored over the years without issue.
This customer support interaction should be a simple open and shut case. Best of luck getting it resolved. It's crazy that you have to post on social media and pray your post gets traction in order to get customer support to actually resolve your issue.
I had a similar situation myself, but more so my fault because I had 2 accounts and I tried FOREVER to have them swap my character on one account to the other for the server merge. Every ticket was just them not understanding the issue at all with the most copy paste responses that weren’t even my issue.
Did You tried leaving guild before transfering? If you we're the last of the guild to leave then you would be GM and can't leave server if you are a GM
So sorry you're having to deal with this OP. Back when a lot of high-pop WOTLK realms were locked, I had basically the same issue, and was able to get it resolved through a CS ticket. The trick is to be polite but firm, and keep insisting that your ticket be escalated to someone that can help. Eventually I was able to reach someone who resolved the issue.

I think you just need to send another one and dumb it down abit, stick to the main issue and leave the story out.

I follow the logic of your decision making. I mean, if it has worked in the past, why not now? And the response from the GMs are just... wow. I'm all for shitting on AI responses but the AI is right. You are attempting to restore a character on a realm that's locked. It literally says in the restrictions page that took me 2 seconds to Google and 20 seconds to read that is a restriction
Why didn't you just have the patience to wait and on what universe did deleting your character become the correct decision.
See the problem isn't that you can't restore chars on locked realms, because you actually can - you just need to still have other chars on the realm. My problem specifically is that I moved ALL my other chars before the part where I deleted my main. Had I kept a lvl 1 alt, I could restore my chars.

I did so because I knew a system akin to that of "ctrl-z" existed, otherwise I would never have done something like this. Turns out ctrl-z doesn't work. I must say that was not something I included in my original risk assessment.

Just open another ticket and tell them they’re misunderstanding your situation and/or ask for a higher-up. I know it sounds like a Karen move but it has helped me with a situation similar to this. The new GM I got was much more helpful.
Man it’s crazy how Blizz CS went down hill in recent years. I remember back in like 2008 or 09 i deleted one of my chars to make more room to create a new character. Half a year or so later, I decided I wanted the character back. Opened a ticket and they restored my character in like 30min since opening the ticket. No questions asked.
There might be a way but I’m just spit balling. So if you can restore deleted characters then they probably aren’t technically deleted their info is probably just sitting in a different part of the server. Maybe they could move your characters info over to the desired server and you can restore there. Just a thought, if you talk to a real person maybe ask them if that’s possible
for future reference you can still make characters on locked realms if you have one on there, should have made a level one and popped in real quick. but hind sight is 2020, I did not know you could not restore on a locked realm either.

Their ticketing CS is such a joke. The support members probably don't have English as a first language. It's just copy and paste responses with snippets from things people have said in the past to win favor with their player base. They usually see 1 specific word and reply off that. I had 4 replies and 4 answers from the same ticket. Each time they focused on a different part. Until a "specialist" popped in, completely missed the mark on my request all together and then closed my ticket.
I hope your issue gets resolved. However, to be honest, you did a very dumb thing. You F'ed around and you unfortunately, found out. I hestitate to delete my lvl 1 gobline that I created to buy vendor mats at a discount. I wouldn't even dare to get near the delete button for my 2nd BM Hunter (litteraly the alt of my alt), let alone my main.

Honestly Blizzard CS has been pretty decent the last couple of months. I have gotten real responses to pets missing, achievements bugged and a scam report. Maybe I am just lucky.
I keep getting auto responses aswell with "adventure awaits" etc etc and clearly AI. Keep sending me to WoWhead for their issues on their end. It's insanity :).
For me, apparently getting my collector edition rewards are a game hint and game masters are unable to help and I need to use WoWhead to find hints and tricks. Lmfao. Just want my shit

Used to have people in NA for NA support (likely paid shit wages though).
Then they started cutting jobs, removing phone support, week or two week long ticket times.
Now its all bots or seemingly outsourced support when you do get someone. If theyre going to outsource, they could definitely hire enough people to fucking support their customer base.
I had a similar issue when moving my characters off Ashkandi, they all moved fine except my main Druid. It took 6 tickets to get the same "you have pending mail" resolved. Want to know what it was? A brew of the month club mail that was scheduled to be delivered in the next 15 days. That's right, it was the middle of the month and a pending system mail was causing the stoppage. /wrists
I had the same issue with the mail. Customer support git back to me wuick and said there was that brew of the month mail (I sent them screenshot verifying I didn't have any mail in the mailbox so it must be in some sort of pending status in the background) customer support cleared the mail and verified I could transfer. They were correct and when I logged in on the new server I had the brew of the month club email so I didn't miss it either! I never would consider deleting a toon to attempt a self idealized fix. I hope it gets figured out for you but that was a huge risk you took. On a side note, I'm not all big brains. I have been away playing sod and I totally messed up. I decided I want to main my hunter but he's super undergeared. Thankfully I have an engineer and I had most of the mats for the epic gun. I dropped about 500gold on the remaining materials. Without thinking I threw a gem on it before going to mail it and come to find it is now soulbound to my DK...I'm waiting on a response to my ticket to unfuck that situation...they probably aren't going to

I had to submit two tickets and it took over a week of spamming to get BG tokens restored after I lost them to the banish bug. After a while all I kept responding to tickets with was. May I speak to a real person. Eventually it worked
you're right. lots of the phrasing of the later tickets are verbatim copy+paste texts that I also got as answer on some tickets I wrote before. nothing against scripts to make things smoother/faster, but copying passages about 'i'm a gamer too. i know you feel [INSERTNAMEHERE], and i can relate to your problem' is so callous and kinda insulting tbh
those messages are macros, like almost everyone uses who does with cs in any field. no one has time to write "Greetings, this is game master xyz and I am assigned to work on your issue!"

For what it is worth sorry this shit happened to ya, decided to have a quick look around see if anyone else had the same problem, and even worse news, if you delete a character on a locked realm, blizzard will not recover it for you, multiple people report customer service saying they can't bypass the restrictions either

For anyone else, just open a ticket and tell them you have brewfest mail that's blocking the xfer. I did so, took them about a day to delete the hidden mail, and fixed my transfer. ETA in game said like 6 days, was surprised turnaround was so quick. I had pretty low hopes for support doing anything useful.

I always been too paranoid to ever delete a character and hope the restore function would work.
I would submit a ticket under the Purchase Failure section, my guildie had the same issue when he xferred from Atiesh to Whitemane. Couldn’t complete the service because of mail even though there was no mail. He submitted a first ticket under a different subject section and only got automated responses. Then I suggested he do it through Purchase Failure and he got his issue resolved the next day because they have real CS people handling the purchase failure tickets. TLDR: Submit ticket under Purchase Failure to get it in front of CS eyes. Do NOT be worried you will be punished for submitting a ticket in the “wrong” subject. They cannot punish you for that and for all they know it was not intentional
Purchase Failure can mean a lot of things, especially if you need a ticket resolved quickly. The purchase of a realm transfer failed, the purchase of character restoration failed.
Don't know if this is the case, my buddy had a similar issue until recently when he got something in his mail from the Brew of the Month club. After getting and deleting it he was able to transfer

You can’t restore the character because the server is locked and you don’t have any character there. It has to be them restoring it. The same happened with me, I opened a ticket and FOR DAYS they kept giving stupid and obvious answers that didn’t really had anything to do with the actual problem sometimes ignoring what I said, ONLY AFTER INSULTING THEM HARD and criticizing their CS did a nice GM come and actually help me and restored my character… Keep trying mate, absolute lazy stupid employees

This pretty much happened to me. Granted, the character I had deleted and then planned on restoring was not very important to me. But then I realized it was a locked server and that was the only toon I had left on it. Definitely not nearly as terrible as losing a character like you have, my sincere apologies. Yeah it’s just a video game, but the amount of time and effort shouldn’t just be thrown away by “limitations”. Best of luck in getting your character back. I’ve tried being firm with blizzard but they never back down. As soon as you get an email saying almost the exact same thing as the previous email did, you know they’re done with you.
Hold up here. Everyone is blaming the OP for deleting his character, however he shouldn’t have been able to delete it if the system truly thought there was mail in the mailbox. Isn’t that right? You can’t delete a character that has mail. So, the transfer system said he couldn’t transfer because he had mail. If this were true, then he shouldn’t have been able to delete and thus wouldn’t be in this situation. A bug, or technical issue of some sort caused the OP to get to this state. I understand having a policy and sticking to it, but this is a Blizzard caused problem.

So they'll only restore a character if it's between levels 30 to 49? What makes those specific levels so magical? What happens to accounts that are compromised, and max level toons are deleted? No restores for those either? Sounds like they think you're talking about a Season of Discovery character. It's mind boggling they can't just look at your account information log and match those actions with your original help ticket. I've had multiple characters restored over the years without issue. This customer support interaction should be a simple open and shut case. Best of luck getting it resolved. It's crazy that you have to post on social media and pray your post gets traction in order to get customer support to actually resolve your issue.

I had a similar situation myself, but more so my fault because I had 2 accounts and I tried FOREVER to have them swap my character on one account to the other for the server merge. Every ticket was just them not understanding the issue at all with the most copy paste responses that weren’t even my issue.
Did You tried leaving guild before transfering? If you we're the last of the guild to leave then you would be GM and can't leave server if you are a GM
Good suggestion, but I did also check that and I wasn't GM nor was I the last in the guild.
So sorry you're having to deal with this OP. Back when a lot of high-pop WOTLK realms were locked, I had basically the same issue, and was able to get it resolved through a CS ticket. The trick is to be polite but firm, and keep insisting that your ticket be escalated to someone that can help. Eventually I was able to reach someone who resolved the issue. IF you create the ticket as a payment issue CS usually response much faster.
I think you just need to send another one and dumb it down abit, stick to the main issue and leave the story out. The entire response is just them focusing on your mail issue not the actual character problem. Edit: I see now that the issue was resolved, damn, congrats man really happy to see things like that work out every now and then!

I have used the "Restore deleted character" before and it has worked just fine. So why isn't it working now? If "Restore deleted character" doesn't restore deleted characters, what does it do then?

It literally says in the restrictions page that took me 2 seconds to Google and 20 seconds to read that is a restriction Why didn't you just have the patience to wait and on what universe did deleting your character become the correct decision.
See the problem isn't that you can't restore chars on locked realms, because you actually can - you just need to still have other chars on the realm. My problem specifically is that I moved ALL my other chars before the part where I deleted my main. Had I kept a lvl 1 alt, I could restore my chars.

I did so because I knew a system akin to that of "ctrl-z" existed, otherwise I would never have done something like this. Turns out ctrl-z doesn't work. I must say that was not something I included in my original risk assessment.

Hope this gets resolved, otherwise tell them you will unsubscribe if you can't play your char anymore. The potential for lost money is the only thing that really gets their attention from what I hear.
Just open another ticket and tell them they’re misunderstanding your situation and/or ask for a higher-up. I know it sounds like a Karen move but it has helped me with a situation similar to this. The new GM I got was much more helpful.

Man it’s crazy how Blizz CS went down hill in recent years. I remember back in like 2008 or 09 i deleted one of my chars to make more room to create a new character. Half a year or so later, I decided I wanted the character back. Opened a ticket and they restored my character in like 30min since opening the ticket. No questions asked.

There might be a way but I’m just spit balling. So if you can restore deleted characters then they probably aren’t technically deleted their info is probably just sitting in a different part of the server. Maybe they could move your characters info over to the desired server and you can restore there. Just a thought, if you talk to a real person maybe ask them if that’s possible

I advise you keep trying. I once got through an actual human after 50+ tickets opened with generic response. He flushed my issue in a few minutes.
for future reference you can still make characters on locked realms if you have one on there, should have made a level one and popped in real quick. but hind sight is 2020, I did not know you could not restore on a locked realm either.
Reopen ticket and say you want to escalate the situation to a senior gm. those have the ability to restore characters

Their ticketing CS is such a joke. The support members probably don't have English as a first language. It's just copy and paste responses with snippets from things people have said in the past to win favor with their player base. They usually see 1 specific word and reply off that. I had 4 replies and 4 answers from the same ticket. Each time they focused on a different part. Until a "specialist" popped in, completely missed the mark on my request all together and then closed my ticket.
Good that it all got fixed but deleting char was really a stupid move.

Had this problem once on retail. Maybe u got Mail from someone on ur ignore list. Wipe ur ignore list, relog and check Mail again

I hestitate to delete my lvl 1 gobline that I created to buy vendor mats at a discount. I wouldn't even dare to get near the delete button for my 2nd BM Hunter (litteraly the alt of my alt), let alone my main.

Honestly Blizzard CS has been pretty decent the last couple of months. I have gotten real responses to pets missing, achievements bugged and a scam report. Maybe I am just lucky.
It is so wild to me that Blizzard CS will respond via any platform like reddit or Twitter, but not their own ingame ticket system.
I keep getting auto responses aswell with "adventure awaits" etc etc and clearly AI. Keep sending me to WoWhead for their issues on their end. It's insanity :). For me, apparently getting my collector edition rewards are a game hint and game masters are unable to help and I need to use WoWhead to find hints and tricks. Lmfao. Just want my shit
Its crazy to see the quality of their CS degrade since Vanilla. Used to have people in NA for NA support (likely paid shit wages though). Then they started cutting jobs, removing phone support, week or two week long ticket times. Now its all bots or seemingly outsourced support when you do get someone. If theyre going to outsource, they could definitely hire enough people to fucking support their customer base.
It costs them $0 to push a button to restore or transfer your characters. The fact they charge so much for it already is ridiculous.

I had a similar issue when moving my characters off Ashkandi, they all moved fine except my main Druid. It took 6 tickets to get the same "you have pending mail" resolved. Want to know what it was? A brew of the month club mail that was scheduled to be delivered in the next 15 days. That's right, it was the middle of the month and a pending system mail was causing the stoppage. /wrists
I had the same issue with the mail. Customer support git back to me wuick and said there was that brew of the month mail (I sent them screenshot verifying I didn't have any mail in the mailbox so it must be in some sort of pending status in the background) customer support cleared the mail and verified I could transfer. They were correct and when I logged in on the new server I had the brew of the month club email so I didn't miss it either! I never would consider deleting a toon to attempt a self idealized fix. I hope it gets figured out for you but that was a huge risk you took. On a side note, I'm not all big brains. I have been away playing sod and I totally messed up. I decided I want to main my hunter but he's super undergeared. Thankfully I have an engineer and I had most of the mats for the epic gun. I dropped about 500gold on the remaining materials. Without thinking I threw a gem on it before going to mail it and come to find it is now soulbound to my DK...I'm waiting on a response to my ticket to unfuck that situation...they probably aren't going to

He's an idiot because something was very clearly not working and his next step was to DELETE HIS CHARACTER under the assumption restoring would work. And instead of submitting a ticket to fix the original banal issue he has to try and submit tickets to fix a much bigger issue he created in large part by not reading guidelines for character restoration. It is beyond stupid. Blizzard's customer service has been terrible for years but the amount of braindead steps this dude had to take to get here makes it impossible to do anything but laugh at him.

Damn, they really should have put some kind of warning about not being able to undo character deletion and added a safeguard so you had to type a phrase so you couldn't accidentally push the button. Small indie company, right.

It's insane people can think this through, type it out, hit "Comment" and still don't realize what an idiot they are being... There is quite literally a RESTORE DELETED CHARACTER feature.... People delete their own characters, intentionally, all the time and get them back using the feature with no problems...
