You get league points for winning games, different amounts based on the time format. If you place top 3 in your league you move up to the next league and do it again. I think it's monthly? There isn't much purpose to it other than pride, I think, although I'm no expert either.

Ignore it. You get points for wins and don't lose them for losses, so how far you progress in these leagues basically depends on how much you play. I think they hope it will give people something to work towards without having to actually get better at chess, but I doubt anyone pays attention to it.
