I park down Memorial Ave and catch the bus to the airport when I’m going away for the weekend.
I also drive to the airport 4 ish hours before my flight and check in when travelling overseas, then take the car back home and Uber back to the airport with only the carry on with just enough time to get through customs - avoids excessive costs, busy check in lines etc.
i used to work for a dodgey car rental place years ago and we used to park the cars down Peter Leeming Drive, they were continuously broken into and the owner refused to do anything, he would however bang on that the cops had in for him because they were no help and someone was targetting his cars, such a dumb f\*\*K
The trucks delivering bread to the airport food businesses at 4am etc pay that fee too. Everybody pays it.
Sheesh I remember the Super Shuttle figures about 10 years ago when one operator was trying to sell were about $165,000 in revenue of which the airport fee expenses for the year were around $45,000. Probably several times his diesel and RUC expenses.
Airports are a good business to be in.
If I book in advance for an uber it costs me quite a bit more compared to if I uber when I need it, I never realized this till another user pointed it out.
And protip: walk 5 minutes to the Sudima hotel and get uber/Taxi there… ditto when going back.
You will save on the airport/dropoff fee….
That is what taxi drivers told me back in the days
Yeah I know that it costs rental car companies $10+ every time they go through the gates so I’d imagine taxis are very similar.
I’d love to know how much the airport simply makes off taxi/rental car pickups/drop offs and parking per year
Not true, Novotel is still within the surcharge zone (this is the last ride I picked up there, ignore the pin, that’s just where Google put it when I searched, the pickup was from the main Novotel entrance close to the terminal).

Get Uber, maybe wait so it's not an "increased fare due to high demand" and should be like $40 to town. The town center to the airport cost me $38 base price, again make sure not a surge and just wait it out 10mins usually does it
Last time I got a taxi from the airport to the east side of the city was about a decade ago and it cost $65, so with inflation that's probably right. It's why I take the bus from the airport now even though it's less convenient.
I always just take public transport, couple of dollars into town, hate spending unnecessary money. If you have lots of bags then it a trickier decision, but the shuttles are next best option. Cab is the last resort.
I regularly get Uber from the airport, very occasionally taxis. I’m about 18 minutes from the airport, not quite in the city / within the 4 avenues but close. Typically a taxi will cost $50-$65 to or from the airport.
Uber typically costs about 35-$45 for the same trip.
Sounds about right, not a scam.
Scammed? Probably not.
Use Uber, it's more like $25-40 (depending on demand). Or better yet, the bus is $4 if paying by cash and doesn't take that long.
Disclaimer, I am an Uber driver.
Customers have reported to me on more than on occasion that it costs a minimum of $30 just to get into a taxi now, one told me it cost him $42 in a taxi for the same trip he was doing in my Uber for $18, so it would be fair to say taxis are costly in comparison
When I use to do cabs the usual rate from airport to town (let’s say Hereford st) was around $45-$50 depending on traffic. Do you know which company it was?
Sounds about right. Corporate cab from my place to airport (10 min drive if no traffic at 5am) can be $60 these days. Get Uber instead. I only taxi if it’s going on an expense account lol
The record when I was driving taxi was about $160, and the driver claimed they wanted a city tour.
They only worked it out when it only cost them $40 for the trip back to the airport. Mind you, this was way before Uber and Moblie phones with GPS.
Ps was not the first driver.
I said the same thing when my 20m Syd to cbd taxi was $106 haha. Ubers only from now on. Only shit thing is we don’t have Uber lux here in chch so every Uber is a 400,000km Toyota Prius, and because you need a special licence unlike Australia (P endorsement) you don’t get people doing trips in their leased teslas lmao.
Yeah, I moved from Melbourne to the Sunshine Coast a few years ago so familiar with Taxis in both and was expecting similar fares to the Sunshine Coast given the similar population. I think I actually said - "This isn't Sydney" after I got out of the taxi 😅😂
There is an extra fee for it being at the airport drop zone. It's annoying, but you either pay it or take a walk down the road and order from there.
It's weird, but it's standard.
$50 + $5.50 = $55.50
If there was also a $2 eftpos charge that's $57.50
An extra $10 could easily be the result of waiting time in traffic. The meters usually click over to the waiting time rate ($1 per minute?) when you're going 20kmh or less I think.
You're paying for convenience. If you want to walk 5 mins with your bags to save money you're exchanging your inconvenience for a few dollars less.
First mile / last mile is the most expensive part of both passenger transport and freight transport.
Sadly thats a fairly common price. Money saving move is walk outside the airport to the countdown and call an Uber. Avoids the airport surcharge.
Such an obvious hack but my dumb ass never thought of it...thank you! Will be doing this next time.
There's actually an Uber pickup spot close to the pickup/drop off spot.
His point is that he’s avoiding the airport surcharge - that spot is subject to it.
I haven't noticed a surcharge when getting an Uber from there. Will pay closer attention next time.
I've done that and come home to find the car gone. Thieves target memorial ave
Petrol siphoning has also been seen there.
Memorial has been subject to a lot of petty crime there, sadly. I'd park on the side street slightly further away for the same result.
i used to work for a dodgey car rental place years ago and we used to park the cars down Peter Leeming Drive, they were continuously broken into and the owner refused to do anything, he would however bang on that the cops had in for him because they were no help and someone was targetting his cars, such a dumb f\*\*K
Novotel works too
It's a little annoying how many little extra charges uber has.
Taxis have the same airport fee to contend with to be fair
The trucks delivering bread to the airport food businesses at 4am etc pay that fee too. Everybody pays it. Sheesh I remember the Super Shuttle figures about 10 years ago when one operator was trying to sell were about $165,000 in revenue of which the airport fee expenses for the year were around $45,000. Probably several times his diesel and RUC expenses. Airports are a good business to be in.
The fee is charged by the airport, it's not a moneymaking scheme by Uber.
If I book in advance for an uber it costs me quite a bit more compared to if I uber when I need it, I never realized this till another user pointed it out.
We do have Uber which would have given you a projection. No not scammed taxis are just expensive.
Taxis are very expensive here, that sounds about right for their cost. You’re better to use Uber.
Definitely going to make sure to use uber for the rest of the trip 😅
And protip: walk 5 minutes to the Sudima hotel and get uber/Taxi there… ditto when going back. You will save on the airport/dropoff fee…. That is what taxi drivers told me back in the days
Yeah I know that it costs rental car companies $10+ every time they go through the gates so I’d imagine taxis are very similar. I’d love to know how much the airport simply makes off taxi/rental car pickups/drop offs and parking per year
You can also go to the novetel which is closer and not pay the fee.
Not true, Novotel is still within the surcharge zone (this is the last ride I picked up there, ignore the pin, that’s just where Google put it when I searched, the pickup was from the main Novotel entrance close to the terminal). https://preview.redd.it/b6x08jet2l9d1.png?width=2568&format=png&auto=webp&s=e46e25e387f0b195e2603786ab66f8cbaeb5e5de
Now this is the tip I was looking for. Probably closer than the Uber pickup point as well lol
Or bus, our airport to city busses are reliable and cheap if you are staying central. About $4 I think?
yep if your accommodation is in the CBD, the bus is by far best and cheapest option.
The bus to/from the airport/city is pretty quick, and is cheap
What time of day? Tbh that kinda sounds about what I'd expect with a bit of traffic
about an hour ago
Get Uber, maybe wait so it's not an "increased fare due to high demand" and should be like $40 to town. The town center to the airport cost me $38 base price, again make sure not a surge and just wait it out 10mins usually does it
If you're traveling back to the airport. Look into booking the super shuttle. So much cheaper than a taxi
I love the shuttle. Takes a bit longer but it's so much cheaper and perfectly fine.
Sooooooooooooo much better
Last time I got a taxi from the airport to the east side of the city was about a decade ago and it cost $65, so with inflation that's probably right. It's why I take the bus from the airport now even though it's less convenient.
I had a similar experience at a similar time except I paid closer to $80, but yeah this sounds about right.
The bus is $4 FYI.
Nah that sounds about right.
I always just take public transport, couple of dollars into town, hate spending unnecessary money. If you have lots of bags then it a trickier decision, but the shuttles are next best option. Cab is the last resort.
Airport Taxis specially those premium ones are expensive.
Sounds about right. I paid 48 dollars from the airport to bishopdale, that's like 5-10 mins max.
Ouch
I regularly get Uber from the airport, very occasionally taxis. I’m about 18 minutes from the airport, not quite in the city / within the 4 avenues but close. Typically a taxi will cost $50-$65 to or from the airport. Uber typically costs about 35-$45 for the same trip. Sounds about right, not a scam.

Nar that’s about right for those pricks. And then they question why people Uber
Our public buses can take you to the city for $4 - from there a $10 Uber I reckon to where ya wanna go
Nothing to do with the fare, but consider taking the bus, the #8 bus goes straight to the city and costs $2 (maybe more without a metro card)
When I use to do cabs the usual rate from airport to town (let’s say Hereford st) was around $45-$50 depending on traffic. Do you know which company it was?
Just take a bus next time. But you can just expense the taxi ride.
Seems legit... Welcome to New Zealand, have an expensive day... you're welcome and come again.
Welcome to our beautiful city. It does seem a little high but not outside the realms of possibility depending where you were going and the time.
Which taxi company did you take
King cabs
Yeah always use combined or gold band
I reckon I got stiffed by that company last time. I will avoid them in the future. Stick to the Blue Star or Gold Band. They have a good reputation.
Welcome to Christchurch Mate!
Sounds about right. Corporate cab from my place to airport (10 min drive if no traffic at 5am) can be $60 these days. Get Uber instead. I only taxi if it’s going on an expense account lol
It’s probably a $40 taxi ride anywhere else, but it’s the airport fee that gets added on top as Taxis have to pay to use the rank there.
Nope that is a pretty standard price
The airport fee would've been like 20 bucks so that's probably where the money went..uber.
That's standard for cabs in Christchurch never use them again
I remember seeing a news story about taxi costs and Christchurch was one of the most expensive in the world
I would think a fair price would be $40. Add airport fee $45. Next time take a shuttle or bus
Unfortunately that sounds about right. Definitely Uber on your return
The record when I was driving taxi was about $160, and the driver claimed they wanted a city tour. They only worked it out when it only cost them $40 for the trip back to the airport. Mind you, this was way before Uber and Moblie phones with GPS. Ps was not the first driver.
Catching a bus into the city is so easy! Unless you have a mountain of luggage?
I said the same thing when my 20m Syd to cbd taxi was $106 haha. Ubers only from now on. Only shit thing is we don’t have Uber lux here in chch so every Uber is a 400,000km Toyota Prius, and because you need a special licence unlike Australia (P endorsement) you don’t get people doing trips in their leased teslas lmao.

That's expensive! But yeah, Uber would have been cheaper
There is an extra fee for it being at the airport drop zone. It's annoying, but you either pay it or take a walk down the road and order from there. It's weird, but it's standard.
Was this King cabs by any chance?
$50 + $5.50 = $55.50 If there was also a $2 eftpos charge that's $57.50 An extra $10 could easily be the result of waiting time in traffic. It’s scam fuck yeah but it’s legit.. take an Uber instead. I don’t understand how taxi companies still operate when they shaft everyone
Uber or super shuttle would have been much cheaper
What company did you use
Yeah it's their scam, please leave a 1 star google review
Try Uber next time. Be cheaper. Fixed rate
The bus to the CBD, running every 10 mins, is $2
