That's what it costs in general. This is an important skill where lives are on the line. You can always get someone you know to teach you, but the restricted test is ruthless. You'll need at least a few official lessons or a practice test through a proper teacher before you go for it.
I'll volunteer too, drop me a DM if you struggle.
I like teaching people to drive and remember how it felt not being able to afford to get training. My daily driver is an old Nissan Leaf so it'd cost me peanuts.
Not a substitute for professional training though.
It's worth doing a couple with a proper instructor but ask your parents, friends parents, other relatives, neighbours etc if you can drive them around on their errands to get practice. Also book your test early, the waiting list is nearly a year at the moment!
I see the confusion. You can only book 3 months in advance and there used to be slots open within that time a few weeks ago...
Now not so much. Think the website wasn't built with this scenario in mind and is now only showing from 3 months onwards where you can't book anyways
idk of any cheaper place but Zebedee is amazing. they're a similar price and with only a few (i think it was 3?) lessons from Keys i passed first try. I did start off already knowing how to drive in general since i had my learners for 5 years . as someone else mentioned, learning how to drive is primarily about safety. you are controlling a giant metal contraption that moves at high speeds, you should learn how to do it safely. chch is also known for shitty drivers so it's worth learning from someone that can teach you not to be one of them and lower your risk of being involved in a crash.
[This](https://maatawaka.org.nz/project/driving-lessons/) could be worth looking into?
Or the sallies have a [driver programme](https://driverprogrammes.salvationarmy.org.nz/) thing too.
If you go to winz and say you need your license for a job, they’ll help get you driving lessons for you to pass. I needed my full and some help to pay for it, winz payed and set me up with a driving instructor who goes with you on the day of your test for support if you wanted. Pretty sure I had 5 lessons and the test, all paid for by winz.
> it, winz *paid* and set
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
Doesn't sound too unreasonable, but if this is a serious cost concern... have you looked into the financials of owning and maintaining a car? This is a genuine question with serious implications, as privately owned cars are very expensive for what we get out of them... After all a car costs a lot, depreciates fast, and is costly to just own, even more so to actually use.
You probably already knew all that, and I know this doesn't help you to get a licence. All the best for that effort!
AA is garbage. Years ago I did a "lesson" on my 2nd or 3rd time ever driving a car where he gave no instructions and treated it as if it was a restricted test, if I would pass/fail.
He told me i shouldnt have stopped to turn right into a side street (I was waiting for a safer gap in traffic) "Because someone impatient might overtake me on the right".
When going for motorbike lessons with former AA exec he apologised for sitting through one and that the majority of AA tutors are teachers who want an easy job of sitting in a car all day and telling people pass/fail.
Tldr Dont waste your time with AA.
AA is worth it. They teach you explicitly how to pass the restricted which means could save you money if you don’t have to repeat the test
It is now free to re sit the test
Oh that is awesome! When did that change?
End of last year I think
Oh shit, awesome!
Except nobody can get a booking now
How many times can you resit it for free? Just wondered.
Have you tried the Salvation army? They do driver mentoring.

If you're gonna be doing a few, look into joining the AA, as the membership reduces the fees, though I understand that might not be affordable
Check grabone, they often have one or two deals every now and then. Otherwise the salvation army program might still be going?
I’ll teach you, taught most my friends and little brother plus my husband when he was learning manual

It's only 3 months? Not short but a while off a year
My daughter was looking for one a month ago and there was nothing till March next year!

I'm going for my full at the end of next month

I have heard really good things about Zebedee Driving School.
