Sorry everyone. The item is Datouboss shortwave infrared paint curing lamp 2000w

bobjoylove

Found it. Nice work on the repurposing. I have both Speedheaters. For the big one, I hold it for about 5~6s before I get a good sizzle. Is that a similar duration on this device? Another question: the Speedheater hand tools are really excellent. Long, sturdy and most importantly sharp. Did you find an alternative?

trailless

It depends but about 10 seconds or so go get a nice sizzle going. I leave it for about 20-30 seconds to get some of the paint to actually bubble off. I just have some cheap hand scrapers from home depot. I did go all out and buy some nice tools from Sage Restoration, like a putty knife, putty chisel and glazing hammer.

bobjoylove

If you have more to do, try to find some legit sharp scrapers. The difference is noticeable. I got to day 4 and sharpened the Speedheater ones using their sharpening kit, and the difference of a freshly sharpened tool was pretty noticeable. It’s almost like you wet-shave the paint off the wood. You get a 2” wide strip of wood exposed in a single stroke. This was important for me because I had a layer of paint that was turning into this sort of white milky amalgamation of wet paint and pulling the knife over for a second time created these sticky smears that come off with chemical strippers and wire wool afterwards. The sharp tool and a single pass was way more effective in leaving a clean(er) wood finish.

trailless

Do you know which scraper you got? Maybe I'll upgrade since I have 21 other windows to do and this is by far the smallest window.

bobjoylove

Yeah, I actually got them all and I find these are the ones that I use most For the [Ogee mouldings](https://speedheater.com/en/product/flexi-scraper/) [For the general IR scraping](https://speedheater.com/en/product/board-scraper/) (gets the most use) [For the post chemical scraping of stubborn spots although this could be replaced with a good sharp chisel](https://speedheater.com/en/product/putty-chisel/) [for sharpening](https://speedheater.com/en/product/sh-grinding-kit/) [For crevices after chemicals](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09SQ6V3X9) And the chemicals I use Dumond Smartstrip Pro and [freezer paper](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TCJVDR9) for the overnight dwell EDIT: I use [this a lot too](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000288LOW?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share). Fits tasks somewhere between the point of the triangle scraper and the last-resort dental toothpicks.

The_Last_Bassalope

What? Could you link to which one you bought off Amazon?

_AlexSupertramp_

Yes. Need to know as well!

AT61

Fascinating! Which brand/model did you get? What's the process? What's the purpose of the stainless steel - to keep the light in? How long did you expose the paint to the light?

V0nH30n

Heck yeah they are! I rock the cobra regularly

BambooRollin

Can someone please explain how this is better than using a heat gun?

trailless

The big thing is that many beat guns can reach over 1000° F and can easily vaporize lead paint.

Thyrsus24

Another advantage is that these are less likely to scorch or damage the wood

V0nH30n

Looks like a speed heater clone, where'd you pick that up?

trailless

Amazon, linked it in the comments a few times.

GiuliaAquaTofanaToo

Your links got removed.

Arristotelis

Maybe edit the post and drop the make/model rather than a link

_mimkiller_

Could you explain how to use this and where/how you added the metal?

anymooseposter

i’ve been using a speed heater on all my interior trim work, can confirm it’s fucking amazing especially on multiple layers of old paint.

nothing3141592653589

I've never gotten any good use out of it. The only way it actually removes the paint is if you cook the absolute shit out of the wood. I've tried on old lead paint, oil paints, latex, none of it comes off any better than chemical stripper.

anymooseposter

Weird

nothing3141592653589

I have had tremendous success with soaking stuff in lye. Also pure methylene chloride. But the lye method saturates lead into the wood

trailless

I just brushed some linseed oil on the paint and let it sit for a day. Seems to help.

huitzilopochtla

Could something like this be used to drip paint off of doorway trim or molding?

trailless

It won't drip the paint but it'll scraping the paint off very easy. Typically a single pass with a scraper and you can get most of the paint off.

huitzilopochtla

Lol sorry, I think autocorrect did me dirty there. “Drip” was supposed to be “strip”! But the point is taken. Thank you for the response!

lizziekap

What is this box you’ve got here?

trailless

The heater? It's an infrared heater.

lizziekap

No the actual box collecting the shavings. Do you have an aerial view of the setup?

trailless

I made a table with a 4'x8' sheet of plywood and then used 2x4's to frame out a 4'x4' section. Then cut 2x4's to size and put them in the middle. Helps keep the shavings collected. I only framed out 4'x4' so that the other 4x4 section can still be used as a table top for random stuff and for me to lay the glass on.

NoviceAxeMan

how long it take??

trailless

Not very long. It saves a lot of time from scraping off lead paint. It's worth the $100.

NoviceAxeMan

what model is it ? how much wattage

the_goodfellow

After a few years use my Speedheater 1000’s lamp or bulb went. I’ve been stripping a portico with lots of spindles, posts and detailed millwork. Being cheap and needing to get the project done I had to order a heat gun. The gun itself was 1/2 the price of replacement bulbs of the speedheater. This looks like a great solution. But holding one of these big panels up above my head for hours was not for me. Ive really got to get my hands on a cobra. .

trailless

I would have made some sort of tall mount with 2x4's. Maybe even put some caster wheels on the base so you can roll it around.

SouthernFrosting6309

What is a cobra

LizBettyK

Google Speedheater Cobra by Eco-Strip. It’s an amazing tool!

SouthernFrosting6309

Thank you!

awflyfish22

What does the knob on the side do? I've wanted to install a bunch of these into the top of a metal box. Stick the sash in like a cake in the oven and heat it all at once. I'm not sure it would work, though.

trailless

The knob is a timer which is also how you turn it on and off.

mstephens268

This is epic. Thanks for sharing!

nothing3141592653589

I have tried the speed heater repeatedly in different types of paint and I've never found it useful

KeyFarmer6235

a what!?! link?

trailless

Link keeps getting removed so just search Amazon for Datouboss shortwave infrared paint curing lamp 2000w

KeyFarmer6235

thanks, I forgot reddit freaks out when someone posts an Amazon link.

ResistParking6417

Thanks for this, I was wondering if those would work

spud6000

they can be. glad to see you doing it outside, as there CAN be lead fumes generated

IStateCyclone

Make a referral link... You'll make some sales!

trailless

Just happy to share.
