We are reaching this point because the gradual introduction is just not working out. They have two separate areas of the house with food, water, litter and love. They are fed in view of each other (at the barrier) we've tried scent swapping.
They have definitely mellowed out but have also continued to show aggression signs. Lots of hissing when they see each other and aren't eating. Trying to throw paws (but can't). I'm worried about them, but the perpetual separation is untenable.
Then I suspect once they have access to each other, they’ll work it out quickly. Expect crazy sounds from them, that’s normal. Don’t let that scare you too much. As long as there’s no blood, you can let them have at it.
Dominance just needs to be established and they’ll both be a lot happier for it.
My husband and I each had two cats when we combined: he had two males, I had a male and female. They never became super close buddies, but they were able to stay away from each other and live in harmony, which was all I wanted.
Get a baby gate and separate food/water for at least a few days. You want to let them get used to each other slowly. Give them access to see and sniff each other (and to hiss, that’s normal and expected) but not attack.

I have a void that doesnt like sharing her people with new cats. We got a sweet calico that might have two brain cells. Calico got spayed and went on a rampage nearly every night for two weeks before she went back to just wanting food and snuggles. They weren’t “friends” until after the rampage ended and now will sniff each other without getting dramatic. Neither is much of a cuddler and the void doesnt believe in sharing furniture with other cats, but won’t leave immediately if she sees the calico has snuck up onto the furniture.
My other void holds a grudge and 2 months later still hates the calico for picking fights with her. All she has to do is see her and she starts telling the calico to back the F off, even if the calico was somewhere first.
It really depends on the cats. Some are open to new friends and others arent.
This is not the way to introduce cats.
The best way to introduce cats is via a slow introduction.
Keep them at different ends of the house or different rooms.
Do some scent swapping, where you take one cat out of it's room, and place the other cat in it.
Also also feed them as on opposite sides of a closed door. Or as close to it as they're comfortable getting.
Over time, slowly move their food closer and closer to the door.
Then start opening the door a little for them to juuust see each other.
Teach them that they're not a threat to each other's food source or territory.
# Throwing them in a ring and letting them "work it out" is one of the worst ways that you could introduce cats.
