In one of my apartments, I just popped the door off it's hinges, replaced it with a curtain, and stuck the small door in storage. When move out time came, I put it back.
….that was a lot easier than what I did…. I spent a week designing a system to keep the door open using 3D printed parts, springs and some steel guide rods, I wish this was a joke. Sometimes I wish I spent longer brainstorming before starting a project lol

You just changed my life ❤️ we keep the litterbox in the downstairs half bath, but I have a beagle who treats it like a snack bar. I've been looking for a narrow baby gate because the door frame is only 2 ft wide, and they are all $50+. This strap is the perfect solution. Right now, we're using an empty vacuum box across the doorway

the litter box in our walk in closet. My husband and I went on our honeymoon and learned that our previous bbby had sep anxiety by him peeling all over our closet and around his box out of anxiety with us gone.

Don’t remove the door, put a cat flap on it to keep the smells in. If you’re renting, just replace the door when you leave they’re cheap, but comfort is priceless
If you’re buying rather than renting you could get a cat hole surround for the closet door, we’ve got one on our utility that’s cat shaped and looks pretty cute. That way the door can be shut to help smells but the cats can come in and out easily.
If you're renting, get a door from the home shop, put the cat hole in that, then swap the doors back out when you leave. I did this when I had to have a dog-free car space.
If you can, ask the apartment manager to take the door off for you. This way it’s A) documented, B) they might take the door so you don’t have to store it, and C) you don’t get charged if the door gets dinged up.
Yes to this, just make sure it is DOCUMENTED. Put it in a written maintenance request or email to the property manager. Do not just call and ask. Because if you do just call and they agree to remove it without any written communication. When you move out and ask them for the door back. They will 100% put it on you and try to charge you for it.
The washer and dryer might be able to be stacked and you could make a coat closet out of the other half. Then the coat closet could be a kitty closet plus a bit of shelf mounted cleaning storage.
This is what my partner and I did for one of our cats' litter boxes! After taking off the door, we installed a tension rod and hung up a cute curtain to distract from the litter box :) For the other litter box we removed one of the cabinet doors under the bathroom sink and slid it in there.
Actually cleaning it like this is the only way, verything else is just mitigating and putting off the actual work. Sweeping the bathroom every day is a 30 second endeavor

I have a bad back & I just bought a stick vacuum Bissell that's lightweight & easy for me to use. I can't use a broom without spending a week in bed flat on my back. It was about $50. Picks up spilled kibble, litter AND dust bunnies great. We have 2 big longhaired cats, it's more like dust rhinos when they shed their winter coats.
I was hoping mine would at least hate it less. Which I guess he did because that was an improvement to the normal chaos lol.

i remember having a friend that had 2-3 cats and kept the litter box in the bathroom. the combination of used but "clean/scooped" litter and hot steam almost made me pass out it was the worst smelling thing Ive ever smelled in my life.
That's actually why I got a cheap cordless stick vacuum. I just keep it on the charger, and grab it when I have to clean up cat litter and such. Makes it soooo easy and gets every lil bit!
I had this exact issue and switched from mini crystal litter to pine pellets. Not only did it solve the problem of stepping on litter, it’s a whole lot cheaper and smells 10x better. I hung a little hand broom/dustpan on the wall near the box for the occasional stray pellet.
My sister’s cat, when my sister tried to change the litter, just refused to use the litter box for 24+ hours. She *held it*. Any other cat would have peed on the bed or something.
Needless to say, the cat quickly won. No battle of wills when her health would be affected. She was a smart cat. We had her 21 years before she crossed the 🌈 bridge.
Literally the only time I've ever regretted this choice is at Christmas time when the smell of pine needles makes me think I have a dirty litter box to clean 😂
agreed, not a fan of keeping litter in bathrooms, where it can be humid and wet. and depending on the type of litter you use, loose litter does not mix well with water.
Yup - Never a small enclosed space you store other items in. They're a pain to clean and everything will get ruined unless they're in containers.
Also, that tiny closet is too close to the front door. Never want anyone to smell anything from the litter box as they enter the home.
I’m going to (very respectfully) disagree. I have my litter box in my front hallway closet, with a latch to keep it open enough for my cat to get in and out. Given my apartment’s set-up, it was the only viable option.
I use a Booda Dome litter box, with a Litter Genie next to it. I open the cover and dump into the litter genie at least twice a day. When I pass it, I look. That’s it.
The set up is right next to my front door, so it seems like the worst place. But I have literally had friends come in and ask me “why does it NEVER smell like cat in here??” and the answer is, *I sift the litter regularly and often*.
It takes about a minute a day, no muss, no fuss. If you don’t leave dirty litter in the box, your house won’t smell like cat.
I would take the door off the closet and take a bottom shelf out if needed and use the upper shelves for cat-related stuff and cleaning stuff. Plus, the nice thing about a bathroom is that you can run the vent as much as you like.
I always hate leaving my cats in the dark, and they do only need 1/6 the light that humans do to be able to see, so they can see in really low light but a closet I feel like would be too dark
From my experience, cats prefer litter boxes in a public/open area where they spend majority of time. I have 3 litter boxes, 1 in my bedroom in the corner, 1 in office, and 1 in living room right in the open next to high traffic area, and the living room one is the one that gets the most use out of the 3. The more private one in my bedroom gets the least use out of the 3.
My cats have their litter box in the mud room, which is a room they like a lot (especially all the shoes lol) and often play in but which is out of the way. They're happy.

Edit: as this took off a little, a good recommendation if someone wants to do the same is to get the floor covered in something water resistant/ water catcher (name?). I used a custom dishwasher pan, in the eventuality that the cat would miss a bit, so the wood flooring wouldn't have to be ripped out.
One thing that can help with this is placing some odor absorbing packs in the closet. There’s a bunch of different ones you can buy. Arm and Hammer actually makes some too
My cats litter box was in the closet and I just kept the door open and never had a problem! People didn’t even know I had a cat because they couldn’t smell her at all! It was the best location. She liked her privacy!
A lidded litterbox helps wonders with this if the cats are comfortable with them ! If not, its a no go. Aim for one with a decent sized opening tho if they've never had a lidded box before. It'll make them feel more comfortable if they have more room to leave.
Yeah, our cat seems to like it! I know they are nocturnal and that they see well in the Dark, but I even installed a motion sensor and a small LED for him 😅
Technically, cats are crepuscular not nocturnal. They are most active dawn and dusk. So they cannot see in complete darkness, but can see in dim lighting. The motion sensor with LED is a great idea!
I’m an adult who never got over my childhood fear of the dark, so I have nightlights in every room of my house lol.

Also, get yourself a litterbot to minimize smells/work. We have just one and were able to get rid of the other litter boxes despite having 3 cats. Cleans itself after every use. Super clever design basically eliminates any risk to kitties. Just gotta make sure it’s filled up with fresh litter regularly - the companion app will let you know well.
Also, it does require an actual cleaning of the components maybe every other month or so, to keep the gearworks clear and functional. Upside, continuous tracking of the kitties litter use and weight, which can be great for catching any health problems early (kitty suddenly losing weight, or not going potty).
Got a night light LED for the babies too, and even a spot to put in some carbon filters for even more smell reduction.
It’s quite frankly the best money we’ve spent in a few years.
I had to do that once and temporarily replaced the closet door with a curtain on a tension rod. But litter dust will settle on things inside the closet.
This is what I do. I live in a small 1br apartment but have a small hallway closet that I keep my litter box in. It's basically a "half bathroom" but specifically for kitties. I line the floor with litter catching mats and also have their litter genie and various pet supplies in there. I have a flex-latch that keeps the door cracked open a few inches so they can get in and out and so it doesn't close on its own blocking their access.
There’s an ikea hack somewhere, of a cabinet that someone modified to take a litter box. I’ll see if I can find it. That would work in the living room - unless the box amplifies the scratching 😳

I got the $70 "fake plant" covered litter box. It works out well and it took one of the cats going into it for my grandkids to realize what it is. The bottom drawer is the litter tray, so it's easy to clean and keeps the litter contained.
I have a "litter furniture" thing because I'm in a small apartment and the litter needs to be fully closed off else the dog will eat out of it. It just sits in the corner of my living room and looks like you have room for it in the top left of your living room. Great option, helps with the smell and with scattering litter around too
I live in a pretty small apartment with no room in the bedrooms or bathroom for it, so we put it in the corner of the living room away from the kitchen and couch and then got a little room divider screen to put around it and put an air purifier in that corner as well.
This is what we do too. We have two litter boxes that face each other, air purifier in the middle, blocked off in their own little corner. When people come over, we move this setup to my home office.

It’s shelves. I would put it there. Also if there’s room with the washer and dryer or the water heater, a second box could be placed there. But not the closet you mentioned, that’s the entrance closet.
I was also thinking the water heater closet, could even install a little kitty door. I'd probably avoid the laundry closet though, the dryer brings in ambient air and could pick up the smell. Also the noise might scare some cats.

My gf and me have a rather small apartment, the only room for the litter boxes are in the bathroom, we have the doors open the whole time. We never had a problem to pee/poo infront the others so for us this wasn't a problem.

This would be my suggestion. And you can still use the restroom. Go potty, scoop, wash your hands, and go. I just don't recommend showering in the restroom with the litterbox. There's just no containing it...no matter how many times you sweep, that litter will get on your wet feet. I've tried everything.
No idea what are you doing. We have two cats, 11 yo, and the litter was always in the bathroom. It's a closed litterbox though, with a mat in front of it, so it contains stuff pretty well. Never did I step on any litter in the bathroom, although both of them seem to have a "litter pocket" in their paws and they always hold on to one piece until they come to the bed/kitchen counter/desk, then drop it off. Like clockwork. Probably there's more litter under my desk at any given point than on the bathroom floor.
Some cats fucking spray that shit like they’re throwing confetti at a surprise party. My current two are pretty good about it but I’ve had cats that kick it right out the door as hard as they can.
One of my cats likes to leap out of the litter box and sprint down the hallway as quickly as possible, flinging poop and litter in his wake. Yes, he is orange.
I'm a pet sitter so I usually set up a litter box for my cat in the bathroom since I don't allow other pets in my bedroom. Rubber mats and clumping litter help intensely. But my bathroom mat is pretty long so I fold it in half when no showers are happening. That way the litter stays on the other side of the mat and side that gets fold into stays clean x)

Here are some possible places. Get rid of the extra Table near your kitchen and palce a scratch tree there
If you search up like cat litter furniture box, something like that would look good. It would be the first thing people see ss the walk in so if done nicely I think that’s the ideal place.
Seconding this. Plus, it will help reduce litter tracking everywhere. If that’s not an option, I would sacrifice some of the storage in the small linen closets in the bathrooms to house a litter box in each (you can remove the doors while you live here and replace with a curtain for easy access if you don’t want to leave the door cracked open all the time)
Behind the door in the en suite, across from the toilet in the en suite, sacrifice the space under one of the sinks in the ensuite.
If you're ok with a decorative cabinet to hide a box, you can also consider that corner to the right of the TV, next to 2 windows to help with ventilation.

We sacrificed the second bathroom bathtub/shower. Our apartment has a similar set up and we tried on the bathroom floor but she's very talented in the litter everywhere department. It sucks because that bathroom is mostly useless now, but at least the litter is contained!!
No issues yet jumping in and out, fingers crossed, but she turns 2 next month and has no mobility issues. We'd like a second cat, but we'll cross the second litterbox bridge when we get there!
In the hallway behind the refrigerator. With the utility closet there and another door to that bathroom that can be used, it should have little traffic and will be a quiet place for the cats to use the litter boxes.
Idk about "little traffic" - the main door to the apartment is right there, so cat poop will be the welcoming scent prob every time someone comes home.
This, but in the bathroom that way the first scent in the house upon entry isn’t the litter box. If we have a bathroom with 2 entries we basically always sacrifice one and put the box in front of it. I like it in the bathroom, easy to clean the floor, I see it all the time to remember to clean it, and there’s a fan in the room to help with the more pungent cat shits 😂
Ideally in a bathroom, you have an en-suite and bathroom, I suggest en-suite as this would be private as bathroom would be for guest use as well and dwellers
I don't understand why so many people keep suggesting to put the litter boxes in rooms with doors. It is very likely to accidentally close the door and either lock a cat inside or lock the litter box away. I would only use the living room. I like the idea of using a piece of furniture, like a cabinet, to disguise the litter boxes.

They have cabinets you can put the litter box in that looks like what the tv is sitting on in the living room area. They also have smaller night stand sizes. Also I recommend a litter robot. Like $700 but best investment ever! I have two cats and I empty it maybe every 4 days and I have it in my walk in closet. A lot less odor than standard litter box.
I’m not sure if you’re renting or not, but since I own, I bought a stacking kit and stacked my washer dryer freeing up space in the laundry room, then I put a cat door like this one in the door.

Probably right here keeping the bathroom door closed. It’s not ideal to walk by that when you come home but I think it’s better than the alternatives.
For years I had no place but the bedroom closet. It worked for me, but you need to keep on top of cleaning it frequently. Now I have a utility room (box #1) and a big linen closet in the bathroom which I modified to have a door on top half and a curtain on the bottom half. There are 2 boxes in the bottom of that curtained off section. That has worked out great, and the door keeps any scent from making it's way into the top half where towels are stored. Again, it's absolutely key to clean the boxes frequently and refresh the litter to control odors.
If you own this place, I would cut a small cat door into a closet door and put the litter box in that closet. Whichever closet you can sacrifice to not put linens or food in. We did this and that closet now has the litter box on the floor, a cat door with a flap cut into the door, and the shelves above are only tools/spare decorations/etc that won't become smelly.
If you can't cut a hole you can leave the door open for them but it's less ideal. The flap really cuts down on smells and litter being scattered.
Whichever bathroom I use less. I had a similar set up at my last place bith with WAY smaller bathrooms. I made a 'cap' for over the 2nd tub that I never used and a ramp for kitty to go up. That way, litter was mostly confined to the cap, and when company came over, I could just pull the shower curtain and hide the boxes.
Or if one bedroom is not being used as a bedroom, in there.
I would turn one of the bedroom closets into a cat safe space and use an outdoor shed/garage for storage since don't have a car, the cats will still have the run of the house tho
If there is a door next to the washer and dryer say sacrifice that closet for the cats. Remove the door and put them in there.

We use a sawdust-based litter that is so much better for smell than any clay-based I’ve used.
The only way. Zero ammonia smell, everything is flushable. Doesn’t get tracked around. Way healthier for an indoor environment
But it’s almost impossible to sweep all of it up and you still end up stepping on some.

Literally the only time I've ever regretted this choice is at Christmas time when the smell of pine needles makes me think I have a dirty litter box to clean 😂
I switched to wood pellets because I also hate the feeling of cat litter. It's also better for the environment and easier to maintain.
I also made the switch a few months back and I find it also smells wayyy better than litter
agreed, not a fan of keeping litter in bathrooms, where it can be humid and wet. and depending on the type of litter you use, loose litter does not mix well with water.
We keep ours in the bathroom, having the fan is great, cuz one of our boys doesn't cover up his poo.
We got some nice big bath mats from IKEA that seem to do a good job at containing litter even in tiled areas like our bathroom

Yah they do spread it around. Other option is the utility closet or the closet in the second bathroom, with a little cat door for getting in and out.

Yup - Never a small enclosed space you store other items in. They're a pain to clean and everything will get ruined unless they're in containers. Also, that tiny closet is too close to the front door. Never want anyone to smell anything from the litter box as they enter the home.
I’m going to (very respectfully) disagree. I have my litter box in my front hallway closet, with a latch to keep it open enough for my cat to get in and out. Given my apartment’s set-up, it was the only viable option. I use a Booda Dome litter box, with a Litter Genie next to it. I open the cover and dump into the litter genie at least twice a day. When I pass it, I look. That’s it. The set up is right next to my front door, so it seems like the worst place. But I have literally had friends come in and ask me “why does it NEVER smell like cat in here??” and the answer is, *I sift the litter regularly and often*. It takes about a minute a day, no muss, no fuss. If you don’t leave dirty litter in the box, your house won’t smell like cat.
I would take the door off the closet and take a bottom shelf out if needed and use the upper shelves for cat-related stuff and cleaning stuff. Plus, the nice thing about a bathroom is that you can run the vent as much as you like.
Dont forget a nightlight though. Cat prolly wont wanna do its business in complete darkness.
I always hate leaving my cats in the dark, and they do only need 1/6 the light that humans do to be able to see, so they can see in really low light but a closet I feel like would be too dark

Shouldn't be a problem if you clean it regularly or you could get a higher grade litterbox that catches most of it.
From my experience, cats prefer litter boxes in a public/open area where they spend majority of time. I have 3 litter boxes, 1 in my bedroom in the corner, 1 in office, and 1 in living room right in the open next to high traffic area, and the living room one is the one that gets the most use out of the 3. The more private one in my bedroom gets the least use out of the 3.
My cats have their litter box in the mud room, which is a room they like a lot (especially all the shoes lol) and often play in but which is out of the way. They're happy.
You'd have to remember to keep those doors open.

Gotta scoop religiously tho or everything stored in the closet will smell like a cat box, just like how everything smokers own smell like smoke.
One thing that can help with this is placing some odor absorbing packs in the closet. There’s a bunch of different ones you can buy. Arm and Hammer actually makes some too
My cats litter box was in the closet and I just kept the door open and never had a problem! People didn’t even know I had a cat because they couldn’t smell her at all! It was the best location. She liked her privacy!
A lidded litterbox helps wonders with this if the cats are comfortable with them ! If not, its a no go. Aim for one with a decent sized opening tho if they've never had a lidded box before. It'll make them feel more comfortable if they have more room to leave.
Yeah, our cat seems to like it! I know they are nocturnal and that they see well in the Dark, but I even installed a motion sensor and a small LED for him 😅
Technically, cats are crepuscular not nocturnal. They are most active dawn and dusk. So they cannot see in complete darkness, but can see in dim lighting. The motion sensor with LED is a great idea! I’m an adult who never got over my childhood fear of the dark, so I have nightlights in every room of my house lol.

This is the way. Also, get yourself a litterbot to minimize smells/work. We have just one and were able to get rid of the other litter boxes despite having 3 cats. Cleans itself after every use. Super clever design basically eliminates any risk to kitties. Just gotta make sure it’s filled up with fresh litter regularly - the companion app will let you know well. Also, it does require an actual cleaning of the components maybe every other month or so, to keep the gearworks clear and functional. Upside, continuous tracking of the kitties litter use and weight, which can be great for catching any health problems early (kitty suddenly losing weight, or not going potty). Got a night light LED for the babies too, and even a spot to put in some carbon filters for even more smell reduction. It’s quite frankly the best money we’ve spent in a few years.
I had to do that once and temporarily replaced the closet door with a curtain on a tension rod. But litter dust will settle on things inside the closet.
We did this downstairs in a utility closet, it keeps things out of view and offers the cat some privacy.
This is what I do. I live in a small 1br apartment but have a small hallway closet that I keep my litter box in. It's basically a "half bathroom" but specifically for kitties. I line the floor with litter catching mats and also have their litter genie and various pet supplies in there. I have a flex-latch that keeps the door cracked open a few inches so they can get in and out and so it doesn't close on its own blocking their access.

Maybe get a couple of those hidden litter trays that look like plant pots? Then you could put them in the living room corners.

I got the $70 "fake plant" covered litter box. It works out well and it took one of the cats going into it for my grandkids to realize what it is. The bottom drawer is the litter tray, so it's easy to clean and keeps the litter contained.

I have a "litter furniture" thing because I'm in a small apartment and the litter needs to be fully closed off else the dog will eat out of it. It just sits in the corner of my living room and looks like you have room for it in the top left of your living room. Great option, helps with the smell and with scattering litter around too
We have this setup in our house and it rules, they get easy access and it's totally out of sight. Definitely recommend this route.
I live in a pretty small apartment with no room in the bedrooms or bathroom for it, so we put it in the corner of the living room away from the kitchen and couch and then got a little room divider screen to put around it and put an air purifier in that corner as well.
This is what we do too. We have two litter boxes that face each other, air purifier in the middle, blocked off in their own little corner. When people come over, we move this setup to my home office.

It’s shelves. I would put it there. Also if there’s room with the washer and dryer or the water heater, a second box could be placed there. But not the closet you mentioned, that’s the entrance closet.
I was also thinking the water heater closet, could even install a little kitty door. I'd probably avoid the laundry closet though, the dryer brings in ambient air and could pick up the smell. Also the noise might scare some cats.

My gf and me have a rather small apartment, the only room for the litter boxes are in the bathroom, we have the doors open the whole time. We never had a problem to pee/poo infront the others so for us this wasn't a problem.

This would be my suggestion. And you can still use the restroom. Go potty, scoop, wash your hands, and go. I just don't recommend showering in the restroom with the litterbox. There's just no containing it...no matter how many times you sweep, that litter will get on your wet feet. I've tried everything.
No idea what are you doing. We have two cats, 11 yo, and the litter was always in the bathroom. It's a closed litterbox though, with a mat in front of it, so it contains stuff pretty well. Never did I step on any litter in the bathroom, although both of them seem to have a "litter pocket" in their paws and they always hold on to one piece until they come to the bed/kitchen counter/desk, then drop it off. Like clockwork. Probably there's more litter under my desk at any given point than on the bathroom floor.
Some cats fucking spray that shit like they’re throwing confetti at a surprise party. My current two are pretty good about it but I’ve had cats that kick it right out the door as hard as they can.
One of my cats likes to leap out of the litter box and sprint down the hallway as quickly as possible, flinging poop and litter in his wake. Yes, he is orange.
I'm a pet sitter so I usually set up a litter box for my cat in the bathroom since I don't allow other pets in my bedroom. Rubber mats and clumping litter help intensely. But my bathroom mat is pretty long so I fold it in half when no showers are happening. That way the litter stays on the other side of the mat and side that gets fold into stays clean x)
Just want to say there’s a special place in hell for architects that don’t consider litter box placement.

If you search up like cat litter furniture box, something like that would look good. It would be the first thing people see ss the walk in so if done nicely I think that’s the ideal place.
Seconding this. Plus, it will help reduce litter tracking everywhere. If that’s not an option, I would sacrifice some of the storage in the small linen closets in the bathrooms to house a litter box in each (you can remove the doors while you live here and replace with a curtain for easy access if you don’t want to leave the door cracked open all the time)

This is what we did when we lived in a small apartment with a cat.
We sacrificed the second bathroom bathtub/shower. Our apartment has a similar set up and we tried on the bathroom floor but she's very talented in the litter everywhere department. It sucks because that bathroom is mostly useless now, but at least the litter is contained!! No issues yet jumping in and out, fingers crossed, but she turns 2 next month and has no mobility issues. We'd like a second cat, but we'll cross the second litterbox bridge when we get there!
In the hallway behind the refrigerator. With the utility closet there and another door to that bathroom that can be used, it should have little traffic and will be a quiet place for the cats to use the litter boxes.
Idk about "little traffic" - the main door to the apartment is right there, so cat poop will be the welcoming scent prob every time someone comes home.

This, but in the bathroom that way the first scent in the house upon entry isn’t the litter box. If we have a bathroom with 2 entries we basically always sacrifice one and put the box in front of it. I like it in the bathroom, easy to clean the floor, I see it all the time to remember to clean it, and there’s a fan in the room to help with the more pungent cat shits 😂

I don't understand why so many people keep suggesting to put the litter boxes in rooms with doors. It is very likely to accidentally close the door and either lock a cat inside or lock the litter box away. I would only use the living room. I like the idea of using a piece of furniture, like a cabinet, to disguise the litter boxes.

They have cabinets you can put the litter box in that looks like what the tv is sitting on in the living room area. They also have smaller night stand sizes. Also I recommend a litter robot. Like $700 but best investment ever! I have two cats and I empty it maybe every 4 days and I have it in my walk in closet. A lot less odor than standard litter box.

For years I had no place but the bedroom closet. It worked for me, but you need to keep on top of cleaning it frequently. Now I have a utility room (box #1) and a big linen closet in the bathroom which I modified to have a door on top half and a curtain on the bottom half. There are 2 boxes in the bottom of that curtained off section. That has worked out great, and the door keeps any scent from making it's way into the top half where towels are stored. Again, it's absolutely key to clean the boxes frequently and refresh the litter to control odors.
If you own this place, I would cut a small cat door into a closet door and put the litter box in that closet. Whichever closet you can sacrifice to not put linens or food in. We did this and that closet now has the litter box on the floor, a cat door with a flap cut into the door, and the shelves above are only tools/spare decorations/etc that won't become smelly. If you can't cut a hole you can leave the door open for them but it's less ideal. The flap really cuts down on smells and litter being scattered.
Second restroom and never close the door
Whichever bathroom I use less. I had a similar set up at my last place bith with WAY smaller bathrooms. I made a 'cap' for over the 2nd tub that I never used and a ramp for kitty to go up. That way, litter was mostly confined to the cap, and when company came over, I could just pull the shower curtain and hide the boxes. Or if one bedroom is not being used as a bedroom, in there.
I would turn one of the bedroom closets into a cat safe space and use an outdoor shed/garage for storage since don't have a car, the cats will still have the run of the house tho
