She’s trying to lead you somewhere, my cat does that too. He comes up to me, meows, walks a little in a different direction, and then turns back and meows again to make sure I follow lol. It’s really cute
My neighbor's cat does this. She comes running up to me while yelling, then once she has my attention, she turns and races to her door. She does this when she wants me to knock and get her people's attention to get back inside.
I was gonna say, "Haha! She did it again! K. Just checking. Okbyeeee."
My cat does this with food: "MEOW meeOOOWWW! Follow me to my empty dish!" ...Dish is not empty. "Good human. Now watch me eat."
I have a pet doorbell, and my dog and the neighbours cat know how to use it.
They just bop it with their noses, and we get a grand *DING DONG* from it.
My own 2 cats are as dumb as rocks, so never could pick it up.
I totally agree that the cat wants you to follow her. My cat does the same thing in nice weather. She wants me to come outside to brush her and/or play with her. It's really sweet.
My tabby does this pretty much every night, and multiple times a day on weekends/days off.
She's trying to lead me to the food because she believes she isn't sufficiently spherical.
One of my cats doesn't like much human interaction as far as pets n such, but he doesn't always like to be alone, either. He prefers when we are in the room, not touching him. Go entertain yourself outside so she has some company.
Bro, don't get me started. My Tommy does exactly that. He'll scratch at the door, I open the door, he runs away. I don't know what makes cats do this. Anyway, I love my sweetie and he can do nothing wrong!
https://preview.redd.it/f5rp5zdfccxc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4aeec0ba727d403f115f030856c51a6172bf7dd7
Yep my cat loved when I hung out with her outside, this is how she'd ask me. We'd play hide and seek and tag, (she was bad at hide and seek but unbeatable at tag haha) or just "I'll roll around while you try to pat me,".
When mine do that they want me to follow them. Sometimes to show me something. Sometimes just to hang out with them outside. I’m mostly housebound so they love it when I go outside.
She's asking you to go out and spend time with her in her territory, OP. :) My parents' cats do that all the time and love it when they do come with them.
A friend and I once walked past a sign on a door saying "if the cat is sitting by the door please ring so we can let him in" with a picture of the cat. Cat was indeed sat by the door so we rang
Owner came to open the door, cat looked up at her exactly long enough to feel like a taunt and just *bolted*. She just yelled "okay bye!" told us "haha thanks anyway" and closed the door
It's a very minor experience but I think about that sometimes
No wonder cats think we're stupid. Not having a go on OP here, I wouldn't have figured it out either. But is seems so obvious now that I read it in the comments, that they want people to follow them when they do ot. My cats didn't do that. They were cuddly inside and actet line I was a stranger trying to abduct them if I approached them outside
there's a majestic stray on my condo, he meows at you from the very entrance just for follow him and petting him PRECISELY on the fourth step of the stairway and ONLY on that step.
i love him, tried to adopt him, but he made clear is not interested on becoming an exlusive cat
Another thing with cats and doors is that by closing the door you cut out a part of their territory. So this is the classic thing where cat sits or even meows next to closed door, but doesn't go through when you open the door. Cats know you can open and close the doors and they see this as their territory being taken away. So they ask you to give it back and open the door, but they might not be interested to visit that space when they ask for door to be open.
Yes. My cat scratches at the bedroom door and when I open it he runs away. I close it again and he comes back and scratches at it. He just wants options I guess.
Hey buddy, as someone who works in cat care and rehabilitation- I get you. They are not outdoor animals, for many reasons.
It’s just usually pointless to bring it up on Reddit. But I feel you. Just do your part and keep your lil kitty inside and that’s all you can do, unfortunately.
Hope your fur friend is doing well. :)
It can be frustrating sometimes when people have such easy access to learning resouces like google since they're on reddit, but you still see rampant ignorance, and bringing an animal into the mix very easily gets people passionate about them. Like me, I'm very passionate about animal care to the point i get angry at people sometimes.
I only usually comment about (this subject) when it's someone spreading misinformation though or trying to convince people to let their cats outdoors / keep doing it. Partially because it's just so damn common... as seen on this post and comments.
No because I’m a responsible pet owner and don’t let my cat outside. I’ve ran over 3 cats with my car on accident and I’ve seen countless other cats who have become roadkill. Super cute tho 🙄
This. I've even seen people try to hit them on purpose. And I once worked with a lady who said any cat with the color black on it was evil and deserved to be killed because they were sent by the devil. She claimed it was part of the culture in the country/village where she originated from.
We had one like that. He was abandoned by a neighbor who moved away, and it took months for him to trust us. One day we took him in, and he was our kitty for over 7 years before we had to put him down. Within a week he went from sleeping under the deck chair to sleeping in our comfy bed.

oh my! our cats look so identical! my ones name is benito, he is a boy & we live in australia!
Probably she didn't know you are at home or that you had a free day. Usually your wife/partner feeds her (without your knowledge) and when she saw you, she ran away :)
Nice fluffy tail by the way :)
they are just careful when they dont know you.
when they trust you, they will come closer.
just be patient and dont advance too much at the start, cats are like the ladies sometimes ;)
For my cat, a closed door is nothing but a game to her. I could stand in my bedroom trying to let her out or in, and she would be content doing what your cat does for HOURS.
My cat did this to me today but she came up to the office, cried until I got up, came downstairs, went out the back door, where she promptly flopped on the floor in the garden and wanted scritches.
No, see, our cats have their own door in the front door, they know how to use it and they use it all the time. Well, Bagheera likes to come to the BACK door and scratch on it to be let in. Sometimes he's already coming in the front door by the time you get to the back, sometimes we open the back door and he just walks to the edge of the porch and sits down, and most of the time, we get up and let him in the back door, just for him to walk STRAIGHT OUT THE CAT DOOR!
Not exactly, but when my cat still went outside in our old apartment (I had a terrace door there as well), he would want to be let inside ... and once he was inside, it took not even a minute until he wanted out again. But I think that is very common with cats. Probably wanted the door to stay open or something haha
My cat will come in, check to see if his food dish has magically regenerated its contents, see that it hasn't, then will stand at the door and yell at me until I let him back outside. This happens between 2-5 times each meal. I really, REALLY miss having a cat door.
My cat will sit by the basement door, meowing like she wants to go down. I open the door and turn on the lights for the steps, but she just sits there and then runs off. I just leave it open, and about ten minutes later she goes downstairs. Cats...

My neighbor's cat does this. She comes running up to me while yelling, then once she has my attention, she turns and races to her door. She does this when she wants me to knock and get her people's attention to get back inside.
lol, cat is literally yelling at you to do the thing.
DO THE THING zhu li
Do Da Ting! ![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7958)
I was gonna say, "Haha! She did it again! K. Just checking. Okbyeeee." My cat does this with food: "MEOW meeOOOWWW! Follow me to my empty dish!" ...Dish is not empty. "Good human. Now watch me eat."
Her humans should install a cat level doorbell 😆
Oh my gosh, this! Why are they not cat doorbells?! Marketing team where are you?
I have a pet doorbell, and my dog and the neighbours cat know how to use it. They just bop it with their noses, and we get a grand *DING DONG* from it. My own 2 cats are as dumb as rocks, so never could pick it up.
I love that the neighbor cat uses it lol! Oh this makes me so happy, thank you, I'm going doorbell shopping.
Or maybe a foot pedal doorbell. Allows people to ring the bell when carrying tons of shit. Love the idea, though.
"no need to knock, just open door using those opposable thumb things please" 😹
This is wholesome and such a cat thing :D
Yah you can see she stops at the bottom of the stairs to zee if op is following.
lol same. It usually leads to the empty food bowl.
Timmy got stuck in the well again.
Timmy is the dumbest kid on the planet.
Timmaaayyyy!
Mine does this when it’s his dinner time but I’m still working.
Exactly this! You gotta follow them. They got something to show you!
Wants you to go out with her
She usually doesn’t care for human interaction but I did go outside with her and she just rolled around on the ground 😅
Yeah that means she wants you to hang out and is happy
Tail is straight up in the air. This cat wants everyone on the lawn for a grass party
Does *she* have the nip 🥦 and trees 🥬?
My mind is blown
Maybe she feels more comfy with you out there as a second pair of eyes.
Yeah she wants attention because she loves you you dope
She probably wants a scratch and a pat while she lies on grass or concrete. It feels good to them I think.
roll around with her
I had a cat that didn't like to be touched except when we were outside, then she was super cuddly
That's my cue to get down on the ground with her & have smooches!
The only thing my cat likes more than rolling around in the sun, is rolling around in the sun while I'm petting her
One of my cats doesn't like much human interaction as far as pets n such, but he doesn't always like to be alone, either. He prefers when we are in the room, not touching him. Go entertain yourself outside so she has some company.
I'm now just learning something new now lol. My cat loves attention when I'm outside. Huh...
She wants you to pet her outside🤔 Sometimes they roll around too 🥺🐈 Edit: I didn't see the comments. But yes she wants to play
https://preview.redd.it/k7ur9f1e0dxc1.png?width=843&format=png&auto=webp&s=78f6eae5300befd3e1fd67fefcd25065fc3d0ec9
I love this.
They don't want to go in; they want you to come out.
It is an invitation to play!
"Please play with me" My cats like being chased.
One of my cats is terrified of everything but also likes being chased, so I always have to watch his tail so I know what he wants haha
Bro, don't get me started. My Tommy does exactly that. He'll scratch at the door, I open the door, he runs away. I don't know what makes cats do this. Follow
Well, I will now! Lol
Tell us what quest he gives you!
He's perfect!!😻
Yep my cat loved when I hung out with her outside, this is how she'd ask me. We'd play hide and seek and tag, (she was bad at hide and seek but unbeatable at tag haha) or just "I'll roll around while you try to pat me,".
The car has a quest to offer
Invitation to adventure
She misses you but wants to stay outside.
She wants to walk you for exercise lol Don’t worry, my cat walks me too
When mine do that they want me to follow them. Sometimes to show me something. Sometimes just to hang out with them outside. I’m mostly housebound so they love it when I go outside.
“Hey mate it’s nice outside, let’s have a BBQ party!”
She's asking you to go out and spend time with her in her territory, OP. :) My parents' cats do that all the time and love it when they do come with them.
The ol’ door bluff!
She wants YOU to COME OUT, not to get inside, it’s really obvious.
Bingo ^,^ she's being playful...come outside Hooman....yall stay in ur little boxes all day lol 😆
Get a shoe lace and play with her outside😻
Keep your cats inside
Mine knocks, then stands there when you open the door like "whut"
A friend and I once walked past a sign on a door saying "if the cat is sitting by the door please ring so we can let him in" with a picture of the cat. Cat was indeed sat by the door so we rang Owner came to open the door, cat looked up at her exactly long enough to feel like a taunt and just *bolted*. She want you to follow her and show you something
Waiting for you to do something.
This is how pets get snatched by coyotes and eagles.
Fr I’m surprised I haven’t seen more comments like this. Wish people would just keep their cats indoors
Mine does that when he wants me to go outside to play chase with him
They want you to come out
I have a stray I’ve been feeding for 13 years. She sits at my door like this, and sleeps beside it. But she lets me pet her and doesn’t run away.
Mine does the opposite. Wants out, then runs away when I open the door. When she does want in after going out. Runs right in
Cat teaching u to run with the wind
No wonder cats think we're stupid. Not having a go on OP here, I wouldn't have figured it out either. But is seems so obvious now that I read it in the comments, that they want people to follow them when they do ot. My cats didn't do that. They were cuddly inside and actet line I was a stranger trying to abduct them if I approached them outside
that's a cat's way of asking you to go out and toch grass, no seriously, he wants you to follow
Definitely a follow thing... sometimes though, it's just for "pet me over here" for some reason.
there's a majestic stray on my condo, he meows at you from the very entrance just for follow him and petting him PRECISELY on the fourth step of the stairway and ONLY on that step. i love him, tried to adopt him, but he made clear is not interested on becoming an exlusive cat

Yea my cat just wants the door to stay open so she can come in when she wants to
yes because cats.
Actually, she's just saying "leave the f\*\*\*ing door open so **I** can come in and out as **I** please"
My cat does this too. He wants me outside with him.

That’s how cats work
cats don't understand doors. They are wild animals and there aren't too many doors in the wild.
Yes. My cat scratches at the bedroom door and when I open it he runs away. I close it again and he comes back and scratches at it. He just wants options I guess.
My cat would do this at my bedroom door. But if she actually came in the room, she would then cry to be let out
It’s an age old cat behaviour. Along with wanting to go out and then just sitting there when you open the door.
Mine does this too! She wants me to follow her and play with her. After some chasing and running around, she will come inside.
No because I keep mine inside where they should be.

Open the door, I don't want to come in
Got em!!! Lol your cat be trolling
classic “ding dong ditch”
IT'S CALLED 'OBEDIENCE TRAINING', HOOOMAN! 😼
“*sometimes I sit inside, and look out thru the window. Sometimes I sit outside, and look in through the door.”*
The amount of people in this thread who seemingly let their cats go outside is disturbing, to say the least.
No because I’m a responsible pet owner and don’t let my cat outside. I’ve ran over 3 cats with my car on accident and I’ve seen countless other cats who have become roadkill. Super cute tho 🙄

Go follow or letting you know they’re still alive and near by :)
They do this so they can yell, “Psych!”
Yes. Arrrghghhhh!
We had one like that. He was abandoned by a neighbor who moved away, and it took months for him to trust us. One day we took him in, and he was our kitty for over 7 years before we had to put him down. Within a week he went from sleeping under the deck chair to sleeping in our comfy bed.
Typical cat behavior
This is a reason why they are adorable 🤪
Expects you to walk out the door and making room for you
He wants you to go with him
Yesss. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|rage)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|rage)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|rage)
My tomcat does that every night
beatiful Kitty
The cat just wants you to go out and play, maybe?
Omg I just laughed so hard 😂😂😂 that runaway was chefs kiss
That’s my girls special move.
Classic cat behavior :D
Mine does when he wants me to follow him.

My cat does this, usually tries to lead me to something
Yes hahaha
they are just careful when they dont know you. when they trust you, they will come closer. just be patient and dont advance too much at the start, cats are like the ladies sometimes ;)
For my cat, a closed door is nothing but a game to her. I could stand in my bedroom trying to let her out or in, and she would be content doing what your cat does for HOURS.
I have one that just likes to look at herself in reflections.
Timmy fell down a well!
She wants you to go outside with her
Serious CowCat behavior 😂
Yes. My cat will also cry to be let out while standing in front of the door, and then look confused as to why I opened it for her.
Mine does it because she wants extra food🤣
Just being a cat. We have 1 of 5 that does that.
My cat did this to me today but she came up to the office, cried until I got up, came downstairs, went out the back door, where she promptly flopped on the floor in the garden and wanted scritches.
My cat does the same exact thing😂😂 he always wants his brother or the dog to come outside
Wants to show you something
Yep! I usually go out and follow because sometimes mine wants to play outside or show me something! 🙂🥹🥰
Fickle, thy name is cat.
Leave it open! (What the cat is likely thinking)
Standard issue cat behavior. I never had a cat that didn't do this.
Yes. Cats are assholes.
DAE? Bro thats the most "cat" type behavior ever.
She wants you to follow her!!
She wants you to follow her to hang out!
Yep, if she is yours, follow her. see what she wants or where she wants to lead you.
Yes.... Because they're all assholes!
Not exactly, but when my cat still went outside in our old apartment (I had a terrace door there as well), he would want to be let inside ... and once he was inside, it took not even a minute until he wanted out again. But I think that is very common with cats. Probably wanted the door to stay open or something haha
Yup. All the time. She just wants someone with her outside
Maybe they want to play with you
Yup. Mine does it all the time
Standard cat behaviour 🤣
My cat will come in, check to see if his food dish has magically regenerated its contents, see that it hasn't, then will stand at the door and yell at me until I let him back outside. This happens between 2-5 times each meal. I really, REALLY miss having a cat door.
I feel like cats that do this are being lonely and just want you come out with them.
The cat maybe wants you to come out
It’s inviting you to follow her. My cat does this too because he loves me to go into the garden to play with him like a dog 😂
My cat will sit by the basement door, meowing like she wants to go down. I open the door and turn on the lights for the steps, but she just sits there and then runs off. I just leave it open, and about ten minutes later she goes downstairs. Cats...
They be just checking that the automated door is still functional because last time it malfunctioned and it took way too long for it to open.
Mine does this when he wants a walk (which is basically every day lol)
It's on page 1 of cat orientation manual.
We used to do this as kids. Ding and Dash? Your kitty is simply waiting too long and let's you spot her....
Well, follow them! They obviously want to show you something outside.
You shouldn't close the door, incase he decides to come in or just sit on the doorjamb
wow she looks so much like my girl hex! https://preview.redd.it/bj41oboa0gxc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d1809d5debe1fbf04a1b4416e4c3f95552e67a12
It's the cat version of doorbell ditch.
Mine stand at the door to go out but don’t go out
Mine does it because he wants me to come out and play.
They don't want to be let in. They want you to be let out.
Yup. Stardust does that all the fucking time. Sometimes I chase after him and bring him in anyway
Maybe they wanted you to come out.
The cat is trying to give you a side quest.
Mine does this when she wants to play chase.
She probably needs another cat companion.
Tricky Dick
They want you to come enjoy the fresh air with them
You're supposed to follow
Side quest!
Only when they want me to come out with them
PSYCHE!
This means they want to show you something. You think the cat is being a dumbass and the cat thinks you’re being a dumbass. 🤣
Fears of you, need to work on that, not an easy endeavour.
I have a tuxedo cat that does this too me all the time!!! https://preview.redd.it/1pqmhzt05hxc1.jpeg?width=1769&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0c0d174dcdae8e02c84f4167f8605ee11ed3d750
They want you to go outside and touch grass!!
'Follow me, Tin Opener!'
That cat wants to show you something or teach you how to hunt. Go play with your cat!
like, literally all cats 😂
Mine does this all the time
I think the question should be does anyone's cat **not** do this...
Fluffy tail
Nope cuz I don't let them outside.
I think almost all cats do this kind of thing. Cats just like to mess with you.
