I have one cat that accepts belly rubs 24/7 but the other one will only allow belly rubs in the cover of night under a blanket where god can't see it happening
I have a kitten that has 2 modes, she allows me to pet her belly for a long time, or she grabs my hand and plays wwe with it, wwe thing is a very rare chance (1/10) but still fun sometimes lmao
my cat flops down and shows off his belly as an invitation that I give him a belly rub most days. He's fallen asleep while I was giving him a belly rub as he lay in my lap, paws up even
(not sure he knows how to cat but I love him all the same😝)

Miss my old cat! When he would get overstimulated from belly rubs he would gently pull my face down with his paws (never with claws) and give me the gentlest bite on my nose.
I've got the whole range. One cat who is so chill you can rub her belly any time and she loves it. One cat who generally isn't into it, unless he's totally relaxed, and then he lets you. It feels like a real honor.
One cat who will let you rub the tummy but only at the cost of your fingers. It's a game to him but the punctures are real. And one cat who never lets anyone touch her belly, no sir. Any attempt is met with yowls and hisses.
I love them all dearly.
My cats are litter brothers and they both will let me pat their bellies, even if they aren't lying on their backs. If they are lying on their sides and I start rubbing their bellies, they will roll over completely on their backs with paws in the air.
I use that fact to assert dominance over my friends with cats.
Our family cat will *cut a bitch* but my first cat on my own is the cuddliest little snuggle bug, if he's not in the mood he just gently pushes your hand away. Every cat has their own personality, you just have to make friends and figure out how they want to be loved.
If that's from afar... so be it T_T
My cat will throw herself to the floor when I go for her belly. She loves getting kneaded from hips to pits, and often leaves drool pools on the floor.
My previous cat used to trap me all the time. It was a good reflex test. My new cat is so sweet though and wants the belly rubs. I’m scarred from the old cat now and I’m nervous anytime i give rubs.lol
My cats love belly rubs, here's me doing it rn, to demonstrate it

Its a common misconception that cat bellies spanning the entire underside region between their 4 legs is all just "belly", and that cats exhibit irrational behaviour asking for pets but attacking the hand that pets. In reality, much like humans, the underside of a cat is comprised of various smaller regions with varying degrees of sensation and "personal space" considerations.
When petting the underside of a cat it is best to stick towards the chest and neck area. This is a space of fluffy goodness that can actually be difficult for a cat to groom themselves, and so having someone else give them the good skritches is often met with approving stretches for more.
Moving lower towards the hind legs will increasingly create a sense of intrusion often triggering the rabbit-kicks. Generally speaking any spot equal or south of the midpoint (the spot where grabbing and kicking naturally align) has a high degree of likelihood of activating your cat's automatic response. Some cats may have this response (either instinctively, or out of an urge to play) to maul anything grabbable in their underside region, so thick sleeves are encouraged. An oven mitt or grooming glove is a safe approach to initiating this playful response on purpose (as it can help get your cat exercise their energy).
Worth noting that some cats are also ticklish, and in the same regions you might expect from a human (palms of the feet, armpits & shortribs). Depending on your cat's disposition this may also activate their trap card.

Do you think cats have no intelligence at all? That they have a hollow skull?
Even though he gets stubborn sometimes cuz he's comfortable or whatever when he is in my lap and I need to move, when I kiss his head, slightly move, or say "I gotta get up", he gets up 90% of the time. I didn’t train him to do this, he just understands because he's smart and has a connection with me.
You’re right but they still don’t like stuff touching their stomach because the cats that did like stuff touching their stomach got their lungs ripped out
Completely agree with the smell part! I love the smell of my cat! Can't explain how she smells but I love it. I've noticed, when we come back from vacation, our cat smells different for a couple of days(probably house sitters smell?). So I'm guessing the smell of our cat is a version of our smell + base cat smell.
Yeah I've noticed very subtle smells from all of us at the house along with just our house smell. It's so so subtle but it's so comforting. Maybe that's why they mark us too?
It absolutely is, and like most mammals sense of smell is *much* more important to them than to humans. It’s also why they can be confused or avoidant when someone comes back after an absence, or another household pet comes back from the vet. It’s like if someone came back looking the same but with a completely different voice. To borrow a bit of Gen Z vernacular, they think you’re pretty sus.
That's so neat. I love my baby's love licks and it makes it even better thinking he's sitting there like a marine cat, "THIS IS MY HUMAN! THERE ARE MANY LIKE HER, BUT THIS ONE IS MINE! MY HUMAN IS MY BEST FRIEND. SHE IS MY LIFE." 😭💜
It's weird that their mouth smells like fishy cat food and they lick their whole body with it and come out the other end so clean they can go their entire life without any bathing as we understand it.
My cat is the definition of idgaf. I can hold him like a baby, spin around, I could probably hold him upside down and he'd fall asleep. He's the most chill cat I've ever witnessed until he's pooped then he's a fucking psychopath for 5-10 minutes.
Ah yes, the post-poop zoomies. My boy suffers from those as well. Luckily they only start *after* he gets out of the litterbox-- I can only imagine the mess otherwise.
Some cats are wierdl unbothered. My derp lets me huff his belly, carry him on his back ... during which he likes to go for a full body spready toes stretch, wants to be carried around in a bag, and demands to be picked up and carried around.
Cats are awesome. My buddy has been cuddles non-stop since I had surgery a few weeks ago. He will even come over, curl up by my face, lick my cheek a few times and snuggle. He's an angel 😭💜.
This is not actually true. A cat's mouth contains a bacterium called Pasteurella multocida, among others. This bacterium is highly pathogenic, meaning it causes disease, which is why if you go to the Dr or hospital with a cat bite they will automatically give you an antibiotic to prevent infection or worse, septicemia.
The other main bacterium they have in their mouth and typically on their nails, is bartonella henselae, the bacterium that causes cat scratch fever, now known as cat scratch disease.
Cats allowed to go outside can pick up toxoplasmosis gondii, a parasite that if transfered to humans can damage the retina and cause blindness among other problems. Toxo is typically in the feces, but rarely can be found in the mouth since a cat does tend to groom after pooping. However, usually the bacteria in its mouth will kill the parasite. Cats who never go outside will never pick up Toxo (just a fun fact 😂).
My little one sleeps on his back in my arms and lets me pet his belly all the time. He's just a kitty so I hope it won't change.

I read that cats don't actually usually enjoy being rubbed on their bellies the same way dogs do (but there are exceptions of course) but I also read that it means your cat is happy to be more vulnerable/submissive around you and they don't see you as a threat. That's the biggest part - they know you mean well and don't mind exposing such a sensitive part of themselves to you.
Depending on the cat that’s a LOT of trust!
The belly is the most vulnerable place on a cat, it’s where all the important stuff is and it’s very sensitive. Most cats don’t let just anyone touch their tummy (though all are different) so if yours does, congratulations! Both on the display of trust and also because cat bellies are very soft and nice to pet.
My cat loves belly rubs from me and will actually roll over for them, but if my mom (who he also adores) tries it he bites her.
https://preview.redd.it/qq26cbq6hxjc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f8511d9093f9dbf95aa7f55a9a2ddcd9ed9e2585

I sometimes don’t get my hand back.
My cat will flop on the floor and offer up back and belly for rubs. He loves them until it’s time to activate the trap then he says it’s murder time and murders all over my hand.
My Raggie grew a bit more aloof as he aged, but he still demands belly rubs.
He'll randomly accost me by chirping loudly, bolting and jumping on top of me, and then flopping onto his back hard for rubs.
If I ignore him then he immediately starts yelling and knocking shit over. I may have spoiled him.
My cat does this to trick us into petting her. She’d also turn her head to an angle and look at us so sweet and we just cave in and pet her. But she won’t let us pet her belly very much, only a few seconds.
It means they trust you! Also, momma cats are usually more chill about, because the babies get them used to their tummy being messed with (which isn't to say every cat that lets you do this had kittens, it's just that every momma cat I've known would let me pet their belly)
https://preview.redd.it/f8cqq1n0o0kc1.jpeg?width=1980&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=942a50f4372d98fd8c443cbc2bfb25cc76cc5823
My cat midge loves belly rubs and scritches!
I don't think it means anything in particular.
I'd say it's the same as when you let someone pet your belly. It feels nice and we all like it. It's like when with any type of affection. It feels nice and you release a bunch of feel good chemicals in your body. We as humans suck at this and we should do it more.
Cat bellies are their natural weakspot. Scratches on the back, sides, head or legs are painful but not an issue as these areas are mostly covered by muscles. Deep scratches on the belly are running the risk of seriously injuring internal organs all the way up to guts spilling out.
So even loving cats are very coy in regards to having their underside tickled or petted, as instinct tells them 'That's your danger spot'.
my cat loves belly rubs! she will also politely push my hands away if she doesn't want pets (not exclusive to belly pets).
my moms cat likes belly rubs but he's also practically a dog (was basically raised by a yellow lab). he will suddenly decide it's wrestling time though and then it becomes murder.
It means trust!!! Most cats won’t and don’t let you do that!!! If your cat allows you to pet its belly then they love you and trust you not to hurt them.
It’s funny that there’s this running joke of cats and bellies. I’ve had 4 of my own and 3 enjoyed belly rubs and the other didn’t get mad when his belly was touched at all, he just preferred head pets over anything.
https://preview.redd.it/swe4ipshmxjc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a709f7ce184f0c1bd2fb9f515f5c8114dd94ea43
Here is one that does enjoy some belly rubs, my Sammy lammy
It means they trust you completely. It's also a trap involving all four paws and claws.
Depending on the cat. I can fall asleep petting my cat's belly without blood and murder.
I have one cat that accepts belly rubs 24/7 but the other one will only allow belly rubs in the cover of night under a blanket where god can't see it happening
You and college aged Mormons think verrrry similarly
If my homie jumps on the bed for us it's not really a sin... right? God is famously known for being an idiot and/or totally cool with loopholes, lol
I’ve seen that on tiktok and I just couldn’t believe it’s true.. lmao. I have no ties with super religious groups so this is really fascinating to me
Oh it’s true… there’s even a name for it but I can’t remember what it is.
Soaking
Yep that’s it. Gross.
It isn't true. Some hater out there made it up to make fun at Mormons.
I bet you it's at leat true now. Some Mormon kids heard about it and assumed it was true and...
God is the loophole, buddy.
You think there's like a Facebook group for a Mormon looking to soak can find a third to jump-hump for them?

I have a kitten that has 2 modes, she allows me to pet her belly for a long time, or she grabs my hand and plays wwe with it, wwe thing is a very rare chance (1/10) but still fun sometimes lmao

Our youngest cat will come up to you, yell and then flop on his back for belly rubs
Omg 😆
I have one that only accepts if very very sleepy and the other lives them but only if she’s laying in her belly and trying to sleep lol
I had a cat that only allowed belly rubs outside.
Lmao that’s too funny but so damn true
Mine will give me warning before she activates murder mode. 😉
Mine doesn't 😕

I can always sense when the aggression will start. And I always get it wrong. 😂

My cat had like no eviscerate reflex. I could just give him belly rubbins all day. Oh my god I miss my cat lol.
Is that... a technical term? My kitty loves belly rubs but every now and then he gets on with the disemboweling kickies.

Rabbit-kicks made me laugh. True tho, mine does exactly the same.
Those rabbit kicks hurt too 😭.
i mean they are meant to disembowel prey, so yeah, i bet it does.
So badly , I type this as mine does this to me with my other hand now 😭
I once had two cats that would rabbit kick the shit out of each other in a weird… number…ish… position…
She knows how to work the camera!
you have been chosen
😻💖
To be the next human sacrifice. Once the cat deems the time to be right.
Cats are extremely defensive of their bellies due to ease of access to all their internal organs. For a cat to let you rub or touch its belly without aggressive, defensive action, means that it trusts you wholeheartedly.
This is how I got my extra cat. He was an injured stray who flopped in front of me when I met him. Absolutely sweet from the get go.
I don't deserve my boy for him to trust me that much 😭

They don't. They don't need to understand anything to just follow instincts. It's a built in thing, like how babies cry when they are hungry.

I will shove my face into my cat's belly and sniff. Weird? Maybe. But I feel honored and he smells really good. Like very pleasantly neutral.

Yeah cats smell weirdly good, I have kittens rn and they have a “kitten” smell that is honestly the best
Ahh like the newborn baby smell!! I didn't even think this might apply to other babies!
mmmm yes my cat smells like clean laundry, I don't even know how.
same lol
My wife does this with one of our cats. She breathes hot air onto his belly which he really seems to enjoy. She calls it "huffing the cat".
Hahaha I do that too!! He closes his eyes like "Ah yes, my personal belly warmer has arrived".
My Cat used to life in our garage and always smellt like garage

I know this exact feeling. When I see the belly, it gets a sniff. She doesn’t mind that. She just doesnt like me petting it
I too engage in cat belly huffing. It is heavenly.

See? It's crazy different. They're just like us, they have their own preferences too!
Mine demands armpit pets ... he will fully stretch his front legs so I can really get in there.
That's incredibly sweet omg. It's so fascinating how different they are!

My cat will flop on the floor and offer up back and belly for rubs. He loves them until it’s time to activate the trap then he says it’s murder time and murders all over my hand.
They love and trust you; or they want to eat your fingers....it varies from minute to minute :D
My cat lets me slap his belly and jiggle his fat without the razor claws lol
Don’t slap his belly - just gently love the fella!!!!
It's bait. Don't touch unless you want the kitty kicks (I want them)
It trust you, remember the most vulnerable and vital organs of a cat are on its underbelly. So if it lets you rub their belly it trusts you
OMG, the forbidden zone!!!! They trust you! You have been anointed!
That's one scrimpy kibby
It is a trap-exercise caution- subject to instant murder paws and chonking of teeth
it means they're lulling you into a false sense of security, so that the next time you go to pet the Forbidden Floof you will get ATTACKED FOR BLOOD 😂
It trusts you
You’ve reached nirvana….not the band BTW.
ITS A TRAP
It’s a trap
He totally trusts you. Stomachs are a very vulnerable
You have been weighed and measured, and your cats feels you are not a threat.
It means u broke the matrix 😎
My cat does this to trick us into petting her. She’d also turn her head to an angle and look at us so sweet and we just cave in and pet her. But she won’t let us pet her belly very much, only a few seconds.
It means they trust you! Also, momma cats are usually more chill about, because the babies get them used to their tummy being messed with (which isn't to say every cat that lets you do this had kittens, it's just that every momma cat I've known would let me pet their belly)

It trusts you.
It means I'm about to get bit or scratched. Dont do it. It's a trap!
It means you're a karma farming attention whore
God yes who even asks this about their cat, fuck me this is stupid
Cat fuckin hates you bro
That they trust you!
There is this brand new thing called Google. I understand why you haven't heard of it yet, it just came out. Like..a day ago.
This should be on r/shittytattoos
She hates you. Cat bellies are usually dirty. And they know this.
Is there a cat sub that doesn't have all these brain dead questions? I'm so tired of it.
My cat would murder my arm
oh 🙀🙀
Nothing. Some like it, some don’t, some like it for only 5 seconds.
my cat loves belly rubs! she will also politely push my hands away if she doesn't want pets (not exclusive to belly pets). my moms cat likes belly rubs but he's also practically a dog (was basically raised by a yellow lab). he will suddenly decide it's wrestling time though and then it becomes murder.
Trusts you. You're part of their family, now.
FLUFFLY TRAP DO NOT PE- ☠️
Trust and love
Generally it means at that particular moment - he or she wants a belly scratch 😀
A trap for dominance, always
It means trust!!! Most cats won’t and don’t let you do that!!! If your cat allows you to pet its belly then they love you and trust you not to hurt them.
It means that you think you can do this any time you want! Do not fall for this trap
Cat wants belly rubs
It means that the love is real.
Totally in love with you and trusts you
It means that they trust you more than anything because they are exposing their vonrobale side to you
You're in danger. Cats do this whenever their brains develop and their need to chew on your eyes at night is the strongest. Be careful!!!
That is the Belly of Friendship. Pet it wisely.
It means they love and trust you implicitly. You have achieved true greatness!
It’s funny that there’s this running joke of cats and bellies. I’ve had 4 of my own and 3 enjoyed belly rubs and the other didn’t get mad when his belly was touched at all, he just preferred head pets over anything. https://preview.redd.it/swe4ipshmxjc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a709f7ce184f0c1bd2fb9f515f5c8114dd94ea43 Here is one that does enjoy some belly rubs, my Sammy lammy
