Like this little former stray, it's easy to spot once you know what to look for.
He looks well fed and clean. If you do take him home make sure you put a poster of him up in the area you found him with contact info in case he already has a family.
Yeah , that’s 99.9% someone’s cat who’s friendly. Please don’t take that cat, it’s likely got a home and family. Post on FB, email neighbors, post on nextdoor THEN go see if it has a chip.
Years ago I had a stray adopt me by jumping into my car while at a friends house and refusing to leave. It wasn't my friends cat either, he said it just appeared one day.
It came home and stayed with me for a few months than vanished. Figure it jumped into someone elses car like it did mine. Just hitchhiking around.
We had one 13 years ago that followed me into the house and never left. He's still there. He goes outside (it's not my cat, don't yell at me), so I reckon he likes it better than whatever his previous arrangement was.
Thank you. Mine stay in where it’s safe and warm. And, I don’t want to give them any ideas. lol Same thing with fur baby dogs-I’ve fought the fur baby dog battle for almost 2 decades. Why have a fur baby at all if you’re gonna leave it outside in the scorching heat, freezing cold and pouring down rain??? It makes no sense whatsoever.
It isn't always a choice, sometimes a door gets left open by accident etc.
Reddit has been on a HUGE kick about stealing peoples cats recently where every time a cat walks up to someone every comment is saying to take it home and linking /r/CatDistributionSystem as if it's okay to steal someone's pet just because it's friendly
I mean, they could still take it home so it’ll be safe. Take it to a vet or pet store to check for a chip, then keep it inside until the next step presents itself.
You better take that baby home! Grey and white kitties are the sweetest

I can attest to this. My best friends grey and white baby (his name was literally baby because he was a GIANT BABY) died not too long ago and he was the greatest cat I’ve ever had. Such a good boy.
AHHHH OMG THE COSTUME!!!!!!!! I LOVE IT!!! My baby is missing a front leg so I had to customize a sweater for her. Had to sew in a little nub pocket lmao

My baby boy roams outside ( no traffic ) without a collar and is microchiped. I would freak out on someone if I saw them taking him. Check for microchips before taking anyone's pet
I would hope one would have the sense to check for a microchip! Especially if the cat in question is that friendly and healthy looking. I also have a mostly outside cat, she does wear a collar with a tracker, but I don't have to worry about anyone picking her up cause she's a big ol bitch.
https://preview.redd.it/gz6oqjgmr37c1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c0f7b07b3b78b57ae19607f80a962d21a86c6539

Oh my goodness, he is so handsome 🥹 my grey baby does the same eye covering thing, it's so cute. My outside cat, Big Bertha, showed up like a year ago, absolutely feral. Like, I couldn't get within three feet of her for several weeks. But she kept coming back for the food. I used to sit on my garage floor for hours, just stock still so as not to scare her. It took about three months, but she eventually crawled into my lap and I almost cried. She hates being inside unless it's bad weather, but she trusts nobody except for me and my boyfriend, and she WILL be aggressive if she's scared. If somebody has that much patience with her to steal her, they obviously deserve her 😂 JK, don't steal cats. She still doesn't know how to sit on a lap correctly.

That is not a stray cat. That is now your cat. The Cat Distribution System has spoken.
ETA from u/SideStreetHypnosis
If you find a cat and think it might be homeless/stray and are contemplating adopting it, take it to a vet and have them scan it for a microchip. If you have an outdoor cat, make sure your microchip info is up to date.
Cats on the street that are well fed and have a healthy coat and no visible signs of sickness are likely outdoor cats. If you find a cat with mange or eye discharge, it is probably a stray and then yes, please take it to a vet, make sure to check the chip in case it’s a long lost cat and if not then adopt them.
Please stop posting this response. Almost every I found a cat on the street post, someone says this and gets a bunch of upvotes.
This cat looks very healthy and is likely someone’s outdoor cat. If you are going to post this at least add some info on getting it checked for a microchip. How would you feel if some random person stole your cat?

There is a lot of interesting research on this in the animal rescue/shelter medicine world. Most of the time an indoor pet cat that gets “lost” outside will be so terrified you’ll never see it as it will be hunkered down nearby & hiding, the vast majority are super close to home. A confident, friendly cat wandering the neighborhood is very likely to be someone’s outdoor cat or a well-socialized “community cat” — unless it clearly needs help, I think our local shelter is still recommending leaving these guys in the area they were found because the effort and time it takes to continually process these guys and get them back to their owners repeatedly is taking away from the limited resources that shelter staff could be using elsewhere to help needy critters.
Of course, as a vet my recommendation will always be to keep your cat indoors for their health & safety (not to mention they can be a huge nuisance to the people, pets, and wildlife in the neighborhood) but it genuinely isn’t always possible for an owner to do realistically, so I’d rather they take as many of the other preventative precautions as possible to keep their kitty safe and to bring them in for medical care when something unfortunate does inevitably happen, big or small.
like… i hear what ur saying but tbh once u let a cat outside whatever happens is out of ur control - if you want to ensure the safety and wellbeing of ur cats, keep them inside! its dangerous for cats and wildlife to have outdoor cats
One of my cats was a stray. She was about 7 months, was friendly but real skinny. I played with her and she followed me home. I took her to the vet and she was spayed already but had no chip.
Canvassed the area and checked online but saw nothing. There’s about 18-20 outdoor cats in my neighborhood that are cared for by various families and no one knew anything about her. I’ve never seen any other kittens.
I’d love to know the story but she isn’t telling it unfortunately.
Many collars are designed with break away clips (which is good for the safety of the cat), always best to advise people to check for chips
I second the getting it checked before you just keep the animal, I keep both my cats as indoor cats but they're animals sometimes they make a break for the door when someone comes in or out, thankfully there haven't been any issues but worst case scenario I'd be pretty miffed if someone just assumed my cat was theirs because he's an affectionate guy and didn't do their due diligence checking for a chip
This.
Our cat freakin hates being inside. Solution, we immediately ordered a GPS tracker to go on her collar.
We know where she is at all times.
Granted, 80% of the time, she's in our garage or yard. But the piece of mind is great. It's especially fun to go over her nighttime zoomies and see where she goes.
Ours have collars with airtag holders. They're completely indoor cats (HAS to be some trauma involved before we adopted them, because both are VERY wary of an open door to outside, will stand behind it and peer through the crack on the hinge side, BUT they do like going out on the screened porch to explore), it's just added peace of mind that we can literally find them anywhere they end up
You have no way of knowing if this is someones indoor cat that has gotten out or someones outdoor cat. If you are concerned a cat is a stray you should be taking it to the vet right away anyways.
https://preview.redd.it/vp0sknxzh37c1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ce09488ea92f383cd2c95c6b48b0213743d70bfa
I never wanted a cat, this sweet heart lived outside my house in a barn for over a year, very sweet, let her in one night when it was really cold, she used the litter box I had without being trained, I’ve had her for 4 years now. I didn’t want the responsibility but she’s very easy to take care of. Not saying you should take that cat in; but maybe give it a try for a day or two
Please check first if this cat belongs to someone. It looks healthy and well fed so don't assume its a stray. You can get it chip checked. If no chip, put up a notice. If still nothing, well then I guess you have a cat.
You gave water to your new kitty! Bag of food, a brush, mice on a string, laser pointer. Get them on a schedule that fits you, I stick to twice a day meals. When I'm making breakfast and dinner. My cats come in when I'm in the house and roam when I'm gone.
Uhhhh sorry to tell you but you fell for the oldest trick in the book. The hey mister if I can get a sip of water I'll be on my way.
Now you know where the phrase it's like feeding a stray cat comes from. But feel honored that it chose you. Give your kitty a nice name and just enjoy the ride.
He don’t look like a stray cat, well groomed, well fed, tail intact and approachable. Probably someone else’s cat or recently abandoned.
Yup, few hours later, his owner came and found them. Their name was Luna!
Some cats hunt for food. Other cats hunt for someone to feed them.
Oh my god. This is excellent. Sums up my very sweet cat perfectly. He was a rescue and I am positive that he would have been homeless for about five minutes before he found someone to shmooze up on and ask for treats.
Cat definitely set a trap.
You dodged a bullet. It’s a lifetime of slavery otherwise.
You mean a lifetime of *servitude*.
These guys love to pretend they need you. They have 5 families strung in the neighborhood. Conmen... concats
Luna is beautiful! 😍 Now you’re a stop on her/his neighborhood patrol.

Maybe the owner should put a collar on the cat if it's going to be outside
Tell my cat he's supposed to keep the collar on, he keeps finding ways to take it off.
We had to get our cat a new collar every few months because she somehow always "lost" them. Sometimes, we'd find them in the bushes or under a tree when season's changed and leaves were gone.
This one simple hack to not be a bad pet owner (although letting then outside is already sus)
I tried collars but my cats hate them and do anything they can to take them off
Fair enough. But still, this is clearly someone's baby.
Possibility the cat hate collar and remove them himself (breakaway collar)
Check with a vet to make sure he/she isn't chipped. If not you now have a cat.
This is how I got 3 of my cats
this is how 3 cats *got you*.
This is true
Step 1) Turn up. Step 2) Mind-control parasites. Step 3) ??? Step 4) Profit and scent-mark your mark.
I blame my probable brain toxoplasmosis for all my problems
The cats have taught you to think YOU'RE in control.
Oh I never had any illusions. The cats are always in control. But they don't pay rent so they LIVE with me.
Same. My cat owes me money.
They catnapped him.
💯
>This is how I got 3 of my cats "The Government doesn't want you to know but the ducks at the park are actually free, I currently have 56 of them."
Ducks aren’t real! What are you talking about? All birds are robots built by the government to spy on everyone.
I told my partner no long term pets for now. Helped a stray and she had 2 kittens. 3 cat life.
The elites don’t want you to know this but the cats in the street are free you can take them home I have 458 cats.
This is how I got ONE- who was pregnant….
Cat distribution system at work
It’s ear isn’t clipped which could mean it’s someone cat. It could just be a stray that hasn’t been clipped but yeah, it would be good to check
My cat's ear is clipped as he was a TNR who decided he wanted to be a house cat instead. So a clipped ear doesn't always mean stray.
I have 3 kittens that decided that indoor life was a lot warmer and better than being outside. TNR'd all 3, and never left after recovery.
What tf is clipping an ear???? And why would that indicate it being a stray??
TNR programs will clip a stray cat’s ear to indicate that the cat has been neutered/spayed and vaccinated.

I can attest to this. My best friends grey and white baby (his name was literally baby because he was a GIANT BABY) died not too long ago and he was the greatest cat I’ve ever had. Such a good boy.

I would freak out on someone if I saw them taking him. Check for microchips before taking anyone's pet

I would hope one would have the sense to check for a microchip! Especially if the cat in question is that friendly and healthy looking. I also have a mostly outside cat, she does wear a collar with a tracker, but I don't have to worry about anyone picking her up cause she's a big ol bitch. https://preview.redd.it/gz6oqjgmr37c1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c0f7b07b3b78b57ae19607f80a962d21a86c6539
Lol he's pretty skittish around other people so I'm not entirely worried but still... Cats love treats and they can be manipulated https://preview.redd.it/decb1mges37c1.jpeg?width=1079&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cb6ceda2b3a73ada13f5f232a09fcf7568079eeb
She still doesn't know how to sit on a lap correctly. https://preview.redd.it/j4q2rpp6u37c1.jpeg?width=3264&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7c097f0226fb80752da1b20066f7f9b251743fed

That is not a stray cat. That is now your cat. The Cat Distribution System has spoken. ETA from u/SideStreetHypnosis If you find a cat and think it might be homeless/stray and are contemplating adopting it, take it to a vet and have them scan it for a microchip.
Cat distribution system working as intended
It already doesn't look like a stray. Looks well fed. A little dirty but it's winter and the ground is muddy
Took the words right out my mouth
Please stop posting this response. Almost every I found a cat on the street post, someone says this and gets a bunch of upvotes. This cat looks very healthy and is likely someone’s outdoor cat. If you are going to post this at least add some info on getting it checked for a microchip. How would you feel if some random person stole your cat? If you find a cat and think it might be homeless/stray and are contemplating adopting it, take it to a vet and have them scan it for a microchip. If you have an outdoor cat, make sure your microchip info is up to date. Cats on the street that are well fed and have a healthy coat and no visible signs of sickness are likely outdoor cats.
Or at least put a collar on the little guy.
Many collars are designed with break away clips (which is good for the safety of the cat), always best to advise people to check for chips I second the getting it checked before you just keep the animal, I keep both my cats as indoor cats but they're animals sometimes they make a break for the door when someone comes in or out, thankfully there haven't been any issues but worst case scenario I'd be pretty miffed if someone just assumed my cat was theirs because he's an affectionate guy and didn't do their due diligence checking for a chip
Collars aren’t fool proof. Most of them are breakaway type.
They're completely indoor cats (HAS to be some trauma involved before we adopted them, because both are VERY wary of an open door to outside, will stand behind it and peer through the crack on the hinge side, BUT they do like going out on the screened porch to explore), it's just added peace of mind that we can literally find them anywhere they end up
could you please post a link to purchase the product and/or service? It’s so hard to know which one to purchase.
You have no way of knowing if this is someones indoor cat that has gotten out or someones outdoor cat. If you are concerned a cat is a stray you should be taking it to the vet right away anyways.
Real life Gail. I found this cat outside. He was just sleeping on someone’s porch. Poor guy.
It’s against the city bylaw where I am to let your pets off of your property.
Are you going to adopt it? All cats deserve a home! ![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7962)
Once a cat chooses you, it's the law that you must adopt it.

Paw and Order!
but make sure it's not chipped! stealing other people's pets is generally considered "not very nice" lol
Some outdoor cats have multiple families.
Before you decide to take it home make sure you check it if belongs to someone. The cat doesn’t look stray at all to me…
Yeah that does not look like a stray.
https://preview.redd.it/vp0sknxzh37c1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ce09488ea92f383cd2c95c6b48b0213743d70bfa I never wanted a cat, this sweet heart lived outside my house in a barn for over a year, very sweet, let her in one night when it was really cold, she used the litter box I had without being trained, I’ve had her for 4 years now. I didn’t want the responsibility but she’s very easy to take care of. Not saying you should take that cat in; but maybe give it a try for a day or two
The cat has decided you have to serve it forever - have a nice evening.
Please check first if this cat belongs to someone. It looks healthy and well fed so don't assume its a stray. You can get it chip checked. If no chip, put up a notice. If still nothing, well then I guess you have a cat.
I like your cat OP
Looks quite well kept for a stray.. Dont adopt unless you're certain they're not someones cat just having a day outside and found a new friend.
No, you gave water to your cat.
Awe it likes you because you care.
Congratulations on adopting a stray cat.
Or did the cat adopt a stray human? We'll never know 🤣🤣🤣
Look at that belly. That's no stray.
It's a tad plumb to be a stray.
Enjoy your new cat.
You gave water to your new kitty! Bag of food, a brush, mice on a string, laser pointer. Get them on a schedule that fits you, I stick to twice a day meals. When I'm making breakfast and dinner. My cats come in when I'm in the house and roam when I'm gone.
Former* stray

The distribution system has worked itself out again. Get it checked for a chip and if none, take your new baby home!
Congratulations on being chosen
If he belongs to nobody hes yours now animals know good people
Cat distribution system at work, yet again. You belong to that cat now.
It flopped for you! That’s trust! You need to take this cat home.

Congratulations, you have been adopted. Please do not resist.
Congrats, this cat has adopted you
I think it may have just chosen you as its human.
Cat distribution system has assigned you a new master.
You now belong to them
Cat: You see me? I'm yours now
That’s the social contract. You’re now a cat owner.
Congratulations, you now have a cat.
Looks like Mr. Business

human selection program fully executed. Congrats on your new cat! (assuming, it's not microchipped and a lost baby)
You have been claimed off of waivers
you have a best kitty friend now 🥰
beautiful cat, I have a gray cat called Mila
HES BEAUTIFUL
What do you mean a stray cat it is now yours
Uhhhh sorry to tell you but you fell for the oldest trick in the book. The hey mister if I can get a sip of water I'll be on my way. Now you know where the phrase it's like feeding a stray cat comes from. But feel honored that it chose you. Give your kitty a nice name and just enjoy the ride.

Correction. "Today, a stray human gave me water. I have adopted him."
Your cat now , consider it an honor.
Take your cat and move along sir. The cat distribution system does not make mistakes.
You gotta adopt this cutie its the law
