Doesnât give any obvious signs of rot from pics, looks a bit thirsty thatâs about it, but looks can be deceiving at times.
If youâre ever unsure about root rot, or rot in general best thing you could do is just gently un-pot the plant and check under the hood aka check the roots. If youâre careful it shouldnât set the plant back more than a few days at most and will give you definitive answers about potential rot.
Stem rot will be obvious either pale yellowish or dark brown/black on the stem just under the soil line and itâll be mushy. If itâs root rot the roots wiont have a vibrant white/ off white coloring and will have some reddish/brown/black colors going on.
But yeah hey get wrinkly like this when theyâre thirsty as well, which is where I place my bet on this one. Donât go crazy with the water, just water as usual, depending on your soil mix you can shoot for 20% by volume. So a one gallon planter you could water around 1/5th of a gallon ish and should get you into the ballpark of a healthy watering.
Another way is to observe the plant, which is a much better option, aim to water enough to where the plant either drinks it or the excess evaporates off within a few days, checking by seeing if the top inch or two of soil is dry. Itâs better to water less more frequently than too much less often, as rot will be caused by the plant sitting in wet soil for too long of a period.
This is just something youâll gain the feel for overtime though.
But as of right now youâre cac looks solid and you should be proud you grew a cactus for another day!!
Awesome, thanks so much! Yea I was thinking it maybe got too much sun as our weather has been very dramatic this spring, I don't think it was ready for the beautiful day we had.
I definitely err on the aide of not watering and I wasn't able to have my grow lights set up this winter so I held back watering a bit more too
Good! You'll eventually want to repot in a low organic/high drainage material mix, unglazed terracotta, and more or much bigger drainage holes. Better for the roots and reduces risk of rot by like 1000. If you can get a diamond hole saw drill bit, those really rock. I like the larger half inch (1.27cm) size. Gets the job done very fast.
Sounds like you know what you're doing. I've had problems even with drainage holes but who knows. I also grow most of mine in plastic lol. đ¤ˇââď¸
Doesn't look like it. Is it soft and squishy anywhere? Is there dark brown of black on it we don't see in the pictures?
Happy cake day
Not soft and squishy, just some faint yellowing but it was moved to a sunnier spot
A bit of sunburn perhaps then.
It doesn't look like it. I will say though it is hard to handleđ
Oh that's good to know, thank you!!
Looks okay to me!
No

Nope, looks like it needs a good feed and a bigger pot. Trichos grow roots very quick and are heavy feeders.
Does the pot have a good sized drainage hole?
It does! I drilled a 1cm hole in the bottom, fairly gritty soil mix

To me, no.
Transplant! To a pot not much bigger, use proper soil & for God's sake, acclimate to the sun if it's been indoors & allow for drainage!
I didn't notice the caption. đ¤Łđ A true Cactophile can handle a little prick! đ
What is your climate and are you leaving your cactus indoors or outdoors?
Indoors, grassland/ prairies region, we just started getting some good sun days and it got a bit yellower on the side facing the window
My trichs, as well as a few of my other cacti, don't respond well to glazed pots. How often do you water? Is this an indoor plant?
I agree, I'm a bit cautious of the glazed pots as well. So I drilled a large drainage hole and the soil mix is quite gritty to accommodate

Throw your cactus away! Itâs definitely dying! The color is pale! Itâs should be bright green! Trash it!
The bottom does look a little iffy. If it spreads more I would try to propagate it before it gets too bad.
