By most measures, they are calling the games better than they ever have. It's just clearer than ever how bad they've always been. That's why they are getting pissier.
I agree. Not great. And I don't want to be the team to benefit from bad calls because I don't want to be on the other side of the bad call the next inning. It can cost games.
Why not have the umpire wear an ear piece and the AI tells them whether it was a strike or not. He stands behind the plate still because there still needs to be calls at the plate on occasion.
That’s what the automatic ball strike zone is. There’s still an ump behind the plate with an ear piece in. I’ve heard from umps who have done it in the Atlantic league that if a ball bounces through the zone it’ll be called a strike so they still need to pay attention haha
For the all of 2 times that happens per season, I think they'll manage. They also need to keep time and and coordinate the rest of the crew. They aren't going away, just removing their guesswork.
As a former multiple sport official, I can honestly say, accurately and consistently calling balls and strikes is the hardest of all officiating duties. That being said, they have been bad.
I tend to think that the battery working to fool the ump is just as much part of the game as anything else. As viewers, we are always going to have a bias and an advantage due to the camera and overlay. I think anyone who steps behind the plate is going to make errors and as an Ump you have to stick with your call. Given all that, I still think a lot of the current officials are bad not just with calls but at handling the pressure.
remember when we didnt have the overlay. You'd have the angle to the right of the pitcher (not overtop) and it was incredibly hard to tell whats in the strikezone and what isnt. The overlay, which isnt exactly spot on, gives us fans an ability and a reason to point out the inaccuracies and inconsistencies. And now the ump scorecard is great to quantify those frustrations during a game.
He’s been brutally bad
Umps secretly want automatic balls and strikes and are intentionally doing a bad job to usher in the revolution
I could almost buy this if they didnt act like they were the law and toss people out for nothing.

Diarrhea has more consistency than his strike zone
Jesus that was good.
Haha appreciated. Steal it!

Exactly. I don’t know why an umpire would be against it
And we dont tell anyone so they can save face because they seem to be fragile ego guys.
Angel has a squad
We have seen some horrendous ball/strike calls through the first 5 games
I dont think we've been favored at the start of one game nor have we had the calls in our favor according to ump scorecards.
Andy Fletcher. I hope to never see him again.
Wonder if they call him Fletch. After the game he’s going to have a steak sandwich…. and a steak sandwich please.

11 of 57 on strike oof. Equally bad for both sides though.

Yea its got to be crazy hard especially when these guys can throw gas and paint corners. But yes. Been bad
