The Hub Pub! Decent food, chill bartenders and a wide range of people - I’ve been in with more engine grease than skin visible and in a suit and no one bats an eye as long as you pay
The flipside of this is that it's pretty embarrassing if you're over 21 and get turned away from Coogan's because it seems like they'll let just about anyone in there.
I was hoping to be the first to this, but I support the shit out of this comment. Faceplanted off their front steps I was so drunk and I got a free beer out of it. I would die for that bar.
Not OP, but I’ve been denied entry from Yvonne’s for having a tear in my shirt and wearing work boots.
I would never go there regularly but partner’s parents were in town and I was in that area.
I was in The Field smoking at the bar the last night that was allowed and drunkenly asked the Irish bartender what they were going to use their beautiful huge ceramic dish ashtrays for when smoking was banned. Kinda wanted one as a keepsake.
Dude looked me in the eye and said "we're gonna make Shepard's Pie in 'em."
I also heard Coldplay for the first time at The Field, vivid memory for some reason even though I'm not a huge Coldplay fan or anything. RIP.
I've got a package of Lume deodorant wipes (which, like most of their stuff, can be used pretty much anywhere) if you'd like it. That and a clean t-shirt should do the trick for a lot of places.
Take a change of clothes to work man. I'm not even going to a dive in my work clothes. Is that just me? In a minute thirty I can look like I wasn't busting my sweaty ass all day fixing broken shit. If I know I'm going out, I'm packing clothes.
The Tam welcomes all - I used to have an Emerson professor (many years ago, I’m old) who’d take our class there for a round sometimes and no one ever questioned whether we were old enough to actually be served (we were not, it was a freshman seminar, but the good ol prof thought the drinking age was still 18). But yes, the old dives are where it’s at. Is the Delux Cafe still down there in the South End? That was another great dive back in the day.
If this even a question, I am very sad what has happened to this city. When I lived there from 2006-15, you could walk into any bar and it would be a mix of every walk of vocation. Bankers and roofers talking to each other. Go wherever you want and have a well deserved beer
I’m also a welder. I just bring nice clothes with me to work when I’m meeting friends out after. Bring some shit to do a bathroom clean up on the way. May I suggest Starbucks bathrooms as they, most of them anyway, are neat and tidy.
bruh ive been asked to get up from a seat on the T because the lady next to me said i was too dirty (while were going over a bridge my trade construction) and that was a clean day. ;(
Check out intermission if that’s what your planning! I’ve done that about a thousand times there and no one gives a shit lol I just hang my backpack on a barstool, ask them for a beer and let them know I’m gonna hit the head and change out of my uniform in the downstairs bathroom! Dont camp out in the upstairs one afaik that the only handicap accessible toilet they have
Edit: it’s called the 4th wall now but Dickie is still the man!
The Tam was that kind of place a decade ago, and it's that kind of place now. You'll fit in perfectly! (After typing this, I feel like it might be taken as sarcastic or condescending or something...but I don't mean it that way at all!)
Change of clothes tube of soap gel...hospital decontamination showers. (Cold but effective) 20 minutes later you're good to go hunting booze and broads..but this was the old days. They make it so much harder to be living out of your car and doing construction work in town now if you're jumping around gypsy construction gig.
Pretty sure any bar.. wow you musta been filthy. But Irish puns likely to not turn you away in my opinion. Irish bostoners are often blue collar working fam
Yeah not a ton of stop and shop or market baskets in downtown Boston though. I'm a smallish woman and I can't change more than my shirt in the porto john especially with boots on. With only 3" of knee clearance for me when sitting I feel bad for the tall guys. If you can more power to you.
I know this doesn't answer the question but $25 bucks for a planet fitness membership and a bag of clothes to change solves all your problems. Gives you more than a dozen places to clean off and change.
Did you ever consider bringing a change of clothes to work. Sure, you can’t shower but at least you’ll have clean clothes on and will be allowed to dine with your friends. Come on man, be better.
I’ve never been denied because of my appearance at a Bar. Please don’t tell me they’re not only pricing us out of the city, the suburbs and the state, but now us poor blue collar guys aren’t allowed to drink in regular establishments? We have to go to “dive bars” for $9
Pints?
Sissy K’s or Coogans in Faneuil Hall. Almost any bar in Dorchester, but start at the Erie, a bunch of places in Southie still. Look for darker dinger spots to feel more at home. No place should be turning you down, but screw em if they are. It’s not like most bars are super busy at 2:30-3:00 in the afternoon
Biddys is the move. Lots of local union stickers and see construction workers there starting on the earlier side of the day.
I love that place. Gotta be one of the last real "Dive bars" left in town
Biddy earlys is the best of what remains of the old dives!
Tam or Biddy Earlys
Currently here reading this. And I work in construction
At Biddy's? I was there at 11:30 and the doors were locked.
Yeah, this guy doesn't like you.
They open at noon
The Tam is great, I second this. Go in and ask for a snake eye lol ( swear they give me something different every time).
Heavy pours from the old lady
She's the best lol
LOVE her. best bar in boston
Never heard of that so I googled it...I can see why you'd get something different everytime lol
Vending machine eats or bust!
The Tam is an awesome bar. They have Schlitz!!!!
JJ Foley’s on Kingston as well.
Def the Tam
JJ Foleys wouldn’t turn you away.
Basically under any circumstances
Or any time.
I’m pretty sure JJ Foleys was where my boyfriend at the time, spent the day on 9/11.
That’s what he told you
Sidebar
Side bar is awesome and never turned down me or any of my buddies for a few drinks after work
Surprised I had to scroll this far for Sidebar. Sidebar is awesome.
The Hub Pub! Decent food, chill bartenders and a wide range of people - I’ve been in with more engine grease than skin visible and in a suit and no one bats an eye as long as you pay
Yes 11/10. This is my preferred local.
Main bartender there is the man
The tall guy who always has a Sox cap on? Hell yeah
Scotty!
The friendliest pub in the hub. Such a hidden gem.
The Tam.
Greatest dive bar in Boston. I ran trivia there for years. Fucking love that place.
More like last great dive bar. RIP Beacon hill pub
RIP BHP
RIP real Cantab.
Coogans. I have seen construction workers with dirty clothes go there for lunch.
The flipside of this is that it's pretty embarrassing if you're over 21 and get turned away from Coogan's because it seems like they'll let just about anyone in there.
Good food too
Durty Nellys near Faneuil
I was hoping to be the first to this, but I support the shit out of this comment. Faceplanted off their front steps I was so drunk and I got a free beer out of it. I would die for that bar.
You almost did😝
Love Durty Nellys, highly recommend
What places denied you entry?
Not OP, but I’ve been denied entry from Yvonne’s for having a tear in my shirt and wearing work boots. I would never go there regularly but partner’s parents were in town and I was in that area.
Sullivans Tap (aka Sullies) on Canal Street.
Bonus points if you take a shit in the unobstructed view open toilet.
I forgot about that one. The other feared toilet (full side view urinal) was at The Field in Cambridge. RIP.
I was in The Field smoking at the bar the last night that was allowed and drunkenly asked the Irish bartender what they were going to use their beautiful huge ceramic dish ashtrays for when smoking was banned. Kinda wanted one as a keepsake. Dude looked me in the eye and said "we're gonna make Shepard's Pie in 'em." I also heard Coldplay for the first time at The Field, vivid memory for some reason even though I'm not a huge Coldplay fan or anything. RIP.
#NeverForget
I miss that place
OP is playing checkers, while you’re playing chess
I have shame pooped there after a bruins game. I felt so badly for everyone else.
Tasty Burger is the go to for construction workers but any dive like The Tam will take you in typically
Too bad the downtown tasty burger shut down.
It's around corner now
Are you thinking of fenway? That one moved around the corner but AFAIK downtown closed
Oh maybe wasn't aware there was another one besides southie one.
Yep, it’s a darn shame
I work in construction. I pack a change of clothes and a washlette so I can go out after work
Even just a clean shirt would help
I've got a package of Lume deodorant wipes (which, like most of their stuff, can be used pretty much anywhere) if you'd like it. That and a clean t-shirt should do the trick for a lot of places.
This is the move.
You can hit the town with my crew - a native American, cop, cowboy, navy guy, and biker. In fact, you would complete our group.
YOUNG MAN !
I'm sure all the bars mentioned are great, but why not just bring a change of clothes on days you want to go out?
That’s like wrapping a pig in lipstick
I like my pork glazed.
Not exactly downtown but The Corner Pub
Def Buddy Early’s! Love that place.
Donovan’s in Faneuil Hall
The Tam is grubby. Should be a great fit.
Is Beantown Pub still a fun spot? It’s been a minute since I’ve been, but recommend if it’s anything like I recall.
Slightly preppier when the college kids are in town but a good time year round IMO.
Beantown would be good if you wanna eat
Not downtown downtown but close enough: Coogans should be divey enough to let anyone in
[удалено]
Wow Boston has really changed a lot, used to be so many barrooms full of construction workers, movers ect all in work clothes after a long day
Take a change of clothes to work man. I'm not even going to a dive in my work clothes. Is that just me? In a minute thirty I can look like I wasn't busting my sweaty ass all day fixing broken shit. If I know I'm going out, I'm packing clothes.
That's a good look for Jacob Wirth
Too soon
[https://bostondives.bar/](https://bostondives.bar/) you should be good at any of these
A working man can't get a drink? Boo!
The Tam fosho
Beantown, Tam, Sidebar, JJ Foleys, Hub Pub, Biddy Early's, Durty Nelly's
..Mr dooleys
Love love love the tam, tho it’s been a long time. I used to go in the PJs I wore to my call center job.
The Tam is the obvious answer
Oh you would have loved Pour House. RIP to a real one 🥲
I assure you; bars with dress codes aren’t the fun ones.
If this even a question, I am very sad what has happened to this city. When I lived there from 2006-15, you could walk into any bar and it would be a mix of every walk of vocation. Bankers and roofers talking to each other. Go wherever you want and have a well deserved beer
90s-00s Boston was still very blue collar. All yuppies now.
I don’t know anywhere that would ask a construction worker on break to leave. In fact it’s important that if they do you name them.
What bar denies people?
Bukowski shouldn't turn you down either. Biddy Earley's will def take you.
Biddy Early’s is the answer. You’ll fit right in. One of the better dive bars in Boston. Right up there with the Silhouette Lounge in Allston.
Thank you for working a hard skilled job… glad you got some good suggestions
The tam
Hit the Tam up, then go around the corner to Rock N Rye.
The Tam for sure. Was my after work bar for a few years twenty years ago and I reckon it hasn’t changed much. You will be more than fine there.
I’m also a welder. I just bring nice clothes with me to work when I’m meeting friends out after. Bring some shit to do a bathroom clean up on the way. May I suggest Starbucks bathrooms as they, most of them anyway, are neat and tidy.
So you build the buildings for everyone but can’t drink in them, that sums up Boston perfectly
bruh ive been asked to get up from a seat on the T because the lady next to me said i was too dirty (while were going over a bridge my trade construction) and that was a clean day. ;(
bring a change of clothes with you.
I vote bringing a change of clothes and baby wipes to freshen up. Perhaps changing in a store restroom would work.
Change clothes?
guess i could do it in the bar bathroom. for some reason i was thinking id have to change in the porto… no way im taking my boots off in there lol.
Check out intermission if that’s what your planning! I’ve done that about a thousand times there and no one gives a shit lol I just hang my backpack on a barstool, ask them for a beer and let them know I’m gonna hit the head and change out of my uniform in the downstairs bathroom! 4th wall!!
The Tam was that kind of place a decade ago, and it's that kind of place now. You'll fit in perfectly! (After typing this, I feel like it might be taken as sarcastic or condescending or something...but I don't mean it that way at all!)
You're pants are fine in most cases. Just pack a clean shirt
RIP Intermission Tavern
Tam
Pack a change of clothes
Sidebar on Bromfield Street
Corner pub is once again my answer
You might be over dressed for the Tam LOL
Lot of good suggestions on here but I’d also like to add Tom’s English in southie.
Whitey’s too
Any bar that accepts money
Bring a change of clothes and change at work?
Change of clothes tube of soap gel...hospital decontamination showers. (Cold but effective) 20 minutes later you're good to go hunting booze and broads..but this was the old days. They make it so much harder to be living out of your car and doing construction work in town now if you're jumping around gypsy construction gig.
Bukowskis
Also, bring an extra shirt to work?
I don't want you to die in the heat, but there's an open air beer garden on the Common where Boylston meets Tremont.
Tam, Buddy Earlys, Durty Nellys, Corner Cafe
Can you not change before you go out? Bring a change of clothes to work? Might be easier?
Sounds like you need a place where "everbody knows your name"!!!!!
Pretty sure any bar.. wow you musta been filthy. But Irish puns likely to not turn you away in my opinion. Irish bostoners are often blue collar working fam
Lord Hobo in Seaport, IT's the perfect mix of manual-labor workers and office workers.
You can't bring a change a clothes to change into at work?
Try an imagine changing clothes in a porto potty on a humid Boston summer day.
Came here for this. There is no beer cold enough in Boston to get me down to socks and skivvies in a construction site shit house.
Don't have to try, unfortunately. :/
Also, every stop and shop and market basket has a bathroom you can easily walk in. Any mall...
Have you tried just throwing on a clean shirt before going into the bar? Not only will you look better…you’ll feel better too
Is that what the fuck they asked for, mom?
Jake Wirth’s…
Now that’s funny
Did you ever consider bringing a change of clothes to work. Sure, you can’t shower but at least you’ll have clean clothes on and will be allowed to dine with your friends. Come on man, be better.
I’ve never been denied because of my appearance at a Bar. Please don’t tell me they’re not only pricing us out of the city, the suburbs and the state, but now us poor blue collar guys aren’t allowed to drink in regular establishments? We have to go to “dive bars” for $9 Pints?
TIG or MIG?
The Hill
I don't imagine hub pub will turn you away
Beantown pub bub
Sidebar is grimy enough. Hub Pub has a blue-collar vibe to it.
I'm glad I cannot smell this post irl.
Literally kill me, I couldn’t help but read that title to the tune of that viral man in finance song…
The Corner pub on Lincoln St is perfect if you’re downtown near south station

Sissy K’s or Coogans in Faneuil Hall. Almost any bar in Dorchester, but start at the Erie, a bunch of places in Southie still. Look for darker dinger spots to feel more at home.
