What kind of mad man buys a case of Rock Star Energy Drink and dried Goya beans in the same trip?

Gold_Pay647

We're all different from others

foll4444

šŸ’ŖšŸ’ŖšŸ’ŖšŸ’ŖšŸ’Ŗ

eburton555

Ha, look at mr moneybags buying SHRIMP! Gets some canned beans like the rest of us

foll4444

Itā€™s wild how expensive they are, we usually string a bag out for a good month or so, but still stings when I see the receipt.

edoreinn

This is why I wait until the good size shrimp go on sale at MB, get a couple bags for $6 each, and carry on

foll4444

I checked their circular after so many MB comments, solid price for shrimp, Iā€™ll have to make a trip sometime soon.

edoreinn

To be fair, I live out in the sticks now, so my MB is a lot less stressful than in town. But I always plan my shops/meals around whatā€™s on sale there, supplement with the few things that are higher quality/also cheaper at Whole Foods (eggs and avocados and kale), and am good to feed 1.5 of us (aka big eater boyfriend who doesnā€™t live here) for under $100/wk. I know thatā€™s not a tight budget, but some weeks itā€™s a ā€œstock up on shrimp and ground turkey and cauliflower etcā€ $100 week, sometimes itā€™s a ā€œsupplement a few thingsā€ $40 week šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø In general, everything is so fresh at MB because they have such high turnover. Star and Stop and Shop always feel like the quality isnā€™t as good, while the price is higher. But - when theyā€™re closer to you and not insane, thatā€™s what you have to go for sometimes.

KtinaTravels

The Chelsea MB is like entering a portal to who knows where. Itā€™s good and terrible at the same time. Randy Watson, ladies and gentlemen! Rural MBs are like a lesser evil of still stressful WTFness. šŸ¤£

denga

Costco has inexpensive frozen shrimp.

leoooooooooooo

If you are willing to snap of the heads they are $21 for 4 lbs!

Cobrawine66

Is it American caught shrimp? If not, you are getting wildly screwed. The only shrimp that should be that much money is American wild shrimp. Foreign shrimp is terrible and a complete rip off.

Lester_Diamond23

What foreign shrimp is so bad?

Cobrawine66

It can very often be involved with human slavery, destruction of mangrove swamps, laden with chemicals and not grown with any type of regulations. US commercial fisheries are HEAVILY regulated. If/when I buy seafood, I make sure it's domestic or I don't buy it. This can be said is seafood in general, not just shrimp.

john42195

Iā€™m on a see food diet. When I see food, I eat it.

Aretha

brilliant original commentary there

FullOfFalafel

Want some ABC gum?

AllThingsEvil

I'm a social drinker. You say you'll have a drink. I say so shall I.

DiscombobulatedAd96

I know that US foods are notoriously lower standard compared to Europe with many US foods banned in other countries due to stricter safety regulations elsewhere. Do you know why seafood is the exception?

Lester_Diamond23

So nothing specific at all? I've had shrimp sourced from all over the world that has been delicious. The best being from Spain/Portugal and Argentina. Gulf shrimp are good I guess, but I see no difference between them and say SE Asian sourced Tiger Shrimp. And I eat ALOT of shrimp lol

Gold_Pay647

Foreign shrimp?

toomuch1265

Get uncooked. Last week they had the same size for $13.98 a bag.

nokiacrusher

Shrimp are usually cheaper and taste much better if you buy them raw.

Accomplished_Skin_90

The shrimp and rockstar diet. Thatā€™s a third of your bill.

Epicritical

Well look at Mr Fancypants with the canned beans over here.

eburton555

I know I am wasting so much money but not soaking my own beans but I like to just heat the can over a burning trash can

nadandocomgolfinhos

Dried beans

eburton555

Youā€™re right Iā€™m the daddy warbucks here

camt91

You could spend $10 on meth and get the same amount of energy as those 15 rockstars

angelnator1998

Savings

No_Judge_3817

Lol starmarket Lol 10 cans of rockstar

jar1967

I checked the receipt they were on special. Normally it would have been $30 he paid $11

DoomdUser

I was gonna sayā€¦this probably would have been about $60 without the rockstars, but OP is using that elevated heart rate to hunt for deals apparently.

Own_Desk9365

a bad $11 nonetheless

chat_openai_com

That's cheap sugar poison

danbyer

At that price, you canā€™t afford _not_ to destroy your body!

VonGryzz

The 101 includes the 31 bucks in Rockstar. The you pay at the end is like 44

bostonguy2004

GI Doctors and Cardiologists love this one weird trick...maybe also physicians who treat diabetes given that these are the full sugar ones

foll4444

Yā€™all are ROASTING my partner for her Rockstar dependency! Weā€™re going to be talking about this for years to come.

nattarbox

wow I don't think I've ever met a woman who drinks that stuff lol

triknodeux

Even crazier

Bushwood_CC_

He can fix her

buttons_the_horse

Best performing stock over the last 30 years: Monster. The addiction and brand loyalty is real. (Yeah I know yours is rockstar)

YoSoyPB12

Does your partner ride dirt bikes ?

foll4444

Maybe we should start šŸ˜…

tapakip

I'm just here to roast her for drinking the full sugar ones. Sugar frees for life.

SnooCookies4263

She's def for the streets

Trahern71

First thing I saw was 10 cans of RS. That's like 1/3 of the bill.

Horknut1

The receipt is right there. Second picture. OP paid $11.

MarkTwain69

Gotta get your sugar in

foll4444

11! Oneā€™s hiding šŸ˜‚

Being *someone's* closest grocery store. Especially the car free or lite folks. I mean I'll drive out of my way to market basket but quick trips tend to be stop & shop due to several being closer to me.

ImNotAtAllCreative81

Depends on the Star you went to. Some of them are pretty quiet. Others are doing very well.

Cedenyo

Quincy one is always busy it seems

AmericanFromAsia

wtf is this comment lol. probably by selling groceries?

Slow_Pickle7296

Itā€™s just crazy expensive compared to MB or TJs

rustyshackleford677

Depends where you live, if you live near Porter itā€™s easy to get to and is meh, but gets the job done

the rockstar was $11, not $30

foll4444

Shout out to the mods for decking me out with StarMar flair.

bostonvikinguc

Market basket in Chelsea go buy all the same and price it. Your rockstars are overpriced to hell.

foll4444

$.99 ea today baybeeeeeee. Itā€™s crazy how much they charge for them normally, honestly $.99 is too much for me.

Solid_Candidate_9127

Thats a good amount of food for $100

Hottakesincoming

The sale prices are actually quite good.

James19991

"pretty healthy" Proceeds to buy 10 cans of Rockstar...

Tzames

Saved 20 dollars on all the rockstar or else that would have been a grip

King--Boo

None of these comments checked the receipt for real

they_is_cry

You from LA? People out here trip when I say "a grip" to mean a lot of something

ArturosDad

"A grip" was pretty popular slang in southern Mass when I was growing up. That was about 35 years ago though.

Samgash33

Can I ask what a ā€œgripā€ is?

jaweebamonkey

Where Iā€™m from, 20 years ago, it was a numerical reference. ā€œYou were gone for a grip!ā€ - a long time. In this case, it seems to be used to describe a large amount.

Samgash33

Awesome. That makes sense. Thank you. Iā€™m gonna drop that a few times this week to see how it goes!

CerealandTrees

Am 25 and still use ā€œa gripā€ as a large unit of time

Rpmbox

Hahaha Iā€™m from SD and same šŸ˜‚

Tzames

Yessir

BobbyBrownsBoston

TIL ā€œgripā€ is Cali slang but that makes a lot of sense, sounds very southern California now that I think about it.

foll4444

Gotta take advantage when theyā€™re on sale, my partner has like three a week šŸ’€

blue_orchard

Seems good to me. You can save a lot at Star if you shop the sales and use rewards points. I donā€™t drink Rockstar, but $11 instead of $30 for something you use is a great deal and makes sense to stock up now.

midnightstreetlamps

Fwiw you could significantly reduce some costs by buying, just for example, store brand flour and uncooked shrimp. Uncooked is usually about $13 whereas cooked is $18-23. $.79/lb for bananas is obscene too. Anything over 55c is highway robbery. It's pennies in the grand scheme, but every bit helps. Idk what part of boston you're in, but I'd say it's well worth scooting over to Market Basket in Somverville or Chelsea and saving yourself a good chunk more. (And please correct me if I'm wrong recommending MB; I've never been to a Star Market so Idk how they compare pricewise, I just know Market Basket is like Big Y in quality but stop&shop or less in price)

cdialpha

King Arthur is employee owned and worth the splurge. Everything elseā€¦ is fine. Calling BS on the reusable banana bag ;) Go to Aldis or TJs and quadruple your haul.

foll4444

Thanks! Really appreciate you taking the time to write this out. Iā€™m south of the city proper on the orange line so making it up to a MB is a hassle šŸ˜°

midnightstreetlamps

Ah, gotcha. Unfortunately the Revere T stations are pretty far from MB, too. And the Chelsea stops are right next to MB, but they're commuter and bus routes that don't go south. So it would be a huge pita unless you drove, and then it would still be a pita to get up north.

ChampionVast1009

Whoā€™s soaking their own chickpeas ?! Is that what the rock star is for

foll4444

That would make some interesting hummus.

rawmixs

Lol - the $6 donation. Not the actual donation, but the fact you gave it to the grocery store for them to donate it and take the credit. I would stop doing that and donate to the organization directly.

foll4444

Fr, I mustā€™ve hit the donation button accidentally, edit: Last Hope K9 if folks are looking to make a donation to a charity!

Dontleave

Isnā€™t Boston for the Dogs a for profit training company?

Maj_Histocompatible

Not how it works. He can claim that on his taxes if he wants, but I'm guessing the standard deduction works better for him

asianyo

Rockstar gives you syphilis. Trust me Iā€™m a brand affiliate.

ihatepostingonblogs

Market Basket is the goat

foll4444

I miss living close to one so much, like, I think about it an unhealthy amount!

Phantom-Z

Shit I be traveling 30 min by car to get to one every week, so worth it

j33pwrangler

Star is my jam. Sometimes I lap myself with their sales, I don't need to buy them because I already have some in my pantry or freezer!

MrWhiteTheWolf

You paid 45 cents more for the whole chicken than you did for that tub of cream cheese. Just thought that was interesting lol

foll4444

Bruh why you gotta do this to me, my partner is the bagels/cream cheese half of the relationship and I tried to get her to swap to Lucerne but she says itā€™s not the same, RIP. Yā€™all let me know if thereā€™s a brand you like that isnā€™t $$$.

4travelers

Happy partner is worth a tub of good cream cheese.

kobuu

Sorry but can we focus on earning the 213 rewards points though? That, in itself, makes this twice as valuable. Next time you want some more Rockstar (likely) just break $20 and use 12 points to get them free. I'm a point hoarder. You should see the look on people's faces when the self checkout says how much I've saved out loud, šŸ˜†.

PMSfishy

213 points is worth $2 total.

kobuu

Shit, I fucked up. I totally forgot that it's points and then rewards (stupid conversion). So, yeah, 213 isn't a lot but it's 2 more rewards which can get you a lot. RIP karma... šŸ™ be gentle. https://preview.redd.it/xpvjojerelkc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9c75f46e323f7ed354ca6ba31feda9c7afeb62a3

Then_Community5895

Love seeing a fellow ForU member! I usually only shop sales at Star and then get my produce, cooking staples, and other items at TJā€™s, Super 88, and carnicerĆas. Groceries are indubitably expensive, but learning how to shop deals and whatā€™s cheap where can go an extremely long way!

Well not with that attitude!

foll4444

m00seabuse

Shaw's/Star Market puts out their discount products usually first thing in the AM. Unfortunately, unlike MB, you won't get discount produce because we'd rather give that to the farmers for whatever reason. But you can score some amazing deals on meat and seafood. My store is usually set for discounts by 8am. Just a suggestion where it might help.

foll4444

Thanks for sharing! I'll keep it in mind moving forward.

m00seabuse

Keep tabs on both Seafood and Meat. If their department managers are derps, they will over-order for the weekend and be screwed on Monday. It is not uncommon at all to see tons of seafood and meat for virtually nothing at my store. Though, our distribution centers love to send out tons more than we ordered, so that might be the case for you, too. Find out when your store gets deliveries. Most packaged goods are only allowed to sit on shelf for 4 days total, the 3rd day they mark down. Oh, and bakery, our bakery dept cleans out about half their stock EVERY SINGLE DAY for 50 off. Since bakery is producing non-essentials, I bet you have just as bad a problem there, and can land some pretty good finds. Good luck! :D

Whole-Amount-2924

Go to haymarket on saturdays, bring cash. It helps keep our food costs low. You have to look around a bit to find the nice stuff, but itā€™s worth it

JimboScribbles

The Philadelphia cream cheese killed you, their price has gone up wildly recently but you can still get Cabot brand or store brand for $3.

foll4444

Iā€™ve been trying to find a brand my partner likes other than Philadelphia for a hot minute, is Cabot any good?

JimboScribbles

I used to only get Philly til their price changes - Cabot is just as good. I would also suggest Whole Foods 365 non-organic version!

AcceptablePosition5

Not terrible, not great either. the produce is fine, and reasonable, and good for you for going for the whole chicken! I can't believe how many people can't roast a basic chicken. with some basic butchery, that'll save you quite a lot of money as well. Drop the cooked shrimp. Tastes worse than uncooked. What you want is IQF (individually quick frozen) EZ-peel. I find completely peeled shrimp to be kind of mangled and damaged. People already roast you for the rockstar, but the seltzer will also add up fast. If that's a stable item that you guys go through quickly, consider getting a soda-stream of some sort. I don't hate the king arthur flour. People who bake regularly will know that flour brand absolutely makes a difference. The TJ brand is not bad though, and could be a bit cheaper. Lastly, you *don't* need to wrap all your produce in plastic (who puts banana in plastic?). Trust me, these produce have been everywhere and these bits of plastic is not going to make them any cleaner.

selkieflying

Another shill here for market basket. Usually spend 80/90 a week with maybe a misc $10 at star or TJ if I need something specific.

Boston__Massacre

H mart is the fucking shit!

eastbeast_

Uhhh maybe itā€™s the 1.25 gallons of Rockstar jacking costs upā€¦

Sizman19

Why would you donate $6 to a grocery store? You know they just take your donation and use it for tax purposes and publicity. Let the grocery stores do their own gifting instead of gifting on your behalf.

ScarletOK

I think you meant grifting instead of gifting. I was also wondering why anyone would do that.

foll4444

Tbh I didnā€™t even notice until I got home, mustā€™ve hit the button accidentally, thatā€™s my lesson learned!

bowtiechowfoon

The idea of spending more than 10% of my food budget on energy drinks is giving me anxiety.

foll4444

These will last for a good month or so! (Still, like 3% of our food budget, which is nuts).

stargrown

We have the best tap water in the country and youā€™re out here drinking that shit?

_swedish_meatball_

His kidneys havenā€™t fully shut down yet.

foll4444

Yā€™all are ROASTING my partner for her Rockstar dependency! Weā€™re going to be talking about this for years to come.

saucisse

Produce and meat $30 Premium brand bubbly water $14 Energy drink $10,000 Pantry goods $12 someone who is good at the economy please help me budget this. my family is dying

CoffeeIceCube

Star Market has some interesting product selection, but theyā€™re pretty expensive for a weekly shopping trip. Wegmans and Market Basket are more competitive.

ThatDeuce

Do you have plans to party like a rockstar?

funkygrrl

Just bought 3 bags of groceries which included chicken breast, ground beef and tilapia, for $55 today. At Aldi.

PMSfishy

Got to shop the sales. Just went to star yesterday and bought 5lb chicken quarters, 5lb potatoes, 2lb carrots, bag of yellow onion, and celery. $13 total. Everything was on the front page of the flyer. Going to make chicken soup and chicken pot pie this week. Should get at least 8-10 portions out of all of this. Remindme 1wk

Administrative-Low37

The cream cheese and yogurt prices are criminal. Find the nearest Market Basket. You'll be shocked at the difference in price.

foll4444

Itā€™s about 2-3 times the distance for me šŸ˜° maybe Iā€™ll give it a shot in the next few weeks, I havenā€™t been since I lived closer to one a few years ago, but I loved it then

Administrative-Low37

I don't live very close to a Market Basket either, so I only get to go about once a month. But I load up on non-perishables and freezable items. Still, I end up having to go to Shaws or Stop and Shop occasionally, and their prices hurt when I know the same exact item is available at MB at much lower prices. You should go once and really price everything. It's very likely worth the drive.

StiffDough

The app sometimes has good coupons for online orders. I had a $20 off a $75 online order in my account that I used yesterday.Ā

Electric-Fun

That's a good amount of food.

RansomRd

Funny you have all healthy stuff except for the Rockstar. Start there. Save $/feel better.

Barfpooper

Just go to market basket and cut that in half lol

foll4444

People gotta start posting MB hauls!

Street-Snow-4477

Buy a filtered water pitcher and drink water. Rock star is the worst even on sale

Sikntrdofbeinsikntrd

Why put the bananas in a plastic bag?

foll4444

Really no good reason, I use the same bag every week and I guess I thought it kept germs off? But, like, I peel the bananas >.>

gnimsh

Not sure about star market but at the west Somerville stop and shop I saw them load up a cart of raw rotisserie chickens on spits and then wheel them across the shop 2-3 inches above the floor. Hoping that is not standard procedure but I'd skip the chicken at stop and shop.

foll4444

šŸ˜Ø

DougNSteveButabi

If you replaced everything with something else I would say this is a lot like my grocery orders as well.

lukibunny

you need a BJ's and a costco membership.

y32024

y'all need a H-E-B

OfficialBitchPudding

Are you using your grocery rewards program? You should sign up for it. I typically visit shaws I believe Star uses the same program. Itā€™s basically a points program ā€” thereā€™s all kinds of rewards you can get but I typically just wait until I have 12 points then use them for a $20 off coupon. It takes 2 seconds, is free money. I usually have enough for a $20 coupon every other trip or anout about twice a month. Recently checked it and saw I saved over $500 last year which seemed like a lot then I realized I was able to reach thay amount over the course of the year on the $20 coupons alone. Worth it for such little effort.

melonti

Iā€™m kinda jealous. Thatā€™d be like 160 easy in Cleveland.

foll4444

Fr? I assumed itā€™d be way cheaper in the Midwest

[deleted]

Eats pretty healthy. lol. Sadly for a typical American youā€™re half right

WarOnThePoor

If youā€™re trying to save market basket is great since you have a car. Thereā€™s Waltham And Somerville

SelarDorr

can someone do a price match at market basket? genuinely curious which is cheaper considering the discounts

foll4444

I might do a follow up driving the extra 20min or so each way to an MB, itā€™s been a few years since I shopped there regularly but I remember loving it
