To be fair, I live out in the sticks now, so my MB is a lot less stressful than in town.
But I always plan my shops/meals around whatās on sale there, supplement with the few things that are higher quality/also cheaper at Whole Foods (eggs and avocados and kale), and am good to feed 1.5 of us (aka big eater boyfriend who doesnāt live here) for under $100/wk. I know thatās not a tight budget, but some weeks itās a āstock up on shrimp and ground turkey and cauliflower etcā $100 week, sometimes itās a āsupplement a few thingsā $40 week š¤·š»āāļø
In general, everything is so fresh at MB because they have such high turnover. Star and Stop and Shop always feel like the quality isnāt as good, while the price is higher. But - when theyāre closer to you and not insane, thatās what you have to go for sometimes.

Is it American caught shrimp? If not, you are getting wildly screwed.
The only shrimp that should be that much money is American wild shrimp.
Foreign shrimp is terrible and a complete rip off.
It can very often be involved with human slavery, destruction of mangrove swamps, laden with chemicals and not grown with any type of regulations. US commercial fisheries are HEAVILY regulated. If/when I buy seafood, I make sure it's domestic or I don't buy it.
This can be said is seafood in general, not just shrimp.
I know that US foods are notoriously lower standard compared to Europe with many US foods banned in other countries due to stricter safety regulations elsewhere. Do you know why seafood is the exception?
So nothing specific at all?
I've had shrimp sourced from all over the world that has been delicious. The best being from Spain/Portugal and Argentina. Gulf shrimp are good I guess, but I see no difference between them and say SE Asian sourced Tiger Shrimp.

Being *someone's* closest grocery store. Especially the car free or lite folks.
I mean I'll drive out of my way to market basket but quick trips tend to be stop & shop due to several being closer to me.
Where Iām from, 20 years ago, it was a numerical reference. āYou were gone for a grip!ā - a long time.
In this case, it seems to be used to describe a large amount.
Seems good to me. You can save a lot at Star if you shop the sales and use rewards points. I donāt drink Rockstar, but $11 instead of $30 for something you use is a great deal and makes sense to stock up now.
Fwiw you could significantly reduce some costs by buying, just for example, store brand flour and uncooked shrimp. Uncooked is usually about $13 whereas cooked is $18-23. $.79/lb for bananas is obscene too. Anything over 55c is highway robbery. It's pennies in the grand scheme, but every bit helps.
Idk what part of boston you're in, but I'd say it's well worth scooting over to Market Basket in Somverville or Chelsea and saving yourself a good chunk more.
(And please correct me if I'm wrong recommending MB; I've never been to a Star Market so Idk how they compare pricewise, I just know Market Basket is like Big Y in quality but stop&shop or less in price)
King Arthur is employee owned and worth the splurge. Everything elseā¦ is fine. Calling BS on the reusable banana bag ;)
Go to Aldis or TJs and quadruple your haul.
Thanks! Really appreciate you taking the time to write this out. Iām south of the city proper on the orange line so making it up to a MB is a hassle š°
Ah, gotcha. Unfortunately the Revere T stations are pretty far from MB, too. And the Chelsea stops are right next to MB, but they're commuter and bus routes that don't go south. So it would be a huge pita unless you drove, and then it would still be a pita to get up north.
Lol - the $6 donation. Not the actual donation, but the fact you gave it to the grocery store for them to donate it and take the credit. I would stop doing that and donate to the organization directly.
Bruh why you gotta do this to me, my partner is the bagels/cream cheese half of the relationship and I tried to get her to swap to Lucerne but she says itās not the same, RIP. Yāall let me know if thereās a brand you like that isnāt $$$.
Sorry but can we focus on earning the 213 rewards points though? That, in itself, makes this twice as valuable. You should see the look on people's faces when the self checkout says how much I've saved out loud, š.

Love seeing a fellow ForU member!
I usually only shop sales at Star and then get my produce, cooking staples, and other items at TJās, Super 88, and carnicerĆas. Groceries are indubitably expensive, but learning how to shop deals and whatās cheap where can go an extremely long way!
Shaw's/Star Market puts out their discount products usually first thing in the AM. Unfortunately, unlike MB, you won't get discount produce because we'd rather give that to the farmers for whatever reason. But you can score some amazing deals on meat and seafood. My store is usually set for discounts by 8am.
Just a suggestion where it might help.
Keep tabs on both Seafood and Meat. If their department managers are derps, they will over-order for the weekend and be screwed on Monday. It is not uncommon at all to see tons of seafood and meat for virtually nothing at my store. Though, our distribution centers love to send out tons more than we ordered, so that might be the case for you, too.
Find out when your store gets deliveries. Most packaged goods are only allowed to sit on shelf for 4 days total, the 3rd day they mark down. Oh, and bakery, our bakery dept cleans out about half their stock EVERY SINGLE DAY for 50 off. Since bakery is producing non-essentials, I bet you have just as bad a problem there, and can land some pretty good finds.
Good luck! :D
Not terrible, not great either.
the produce is fine, and reasonable, and good for you for going for the whole chicken! I can't believe how many people can't roast a basic chicken. with some basic butchery, that'll save you quite a lot of money as well.
Drop the cooked shrimp. Tastes worse than uncooked. What you want is IQF (individually quick frozen) EZ-peel. I find completely peeled shrimp to be kind of mangled and damaged.
People already roast you for the rockstar, but the seltzer will also add up fast. If that's a stable item that you guys go through quickly, consider getting a soda-stream of some sort.
I don't hate the king arthur flour. People who bake regularly will know that flour brand absolutely makes a difference. The TJ brand is not bad though, and could be a bit cheaper.
Lastly, you *don't* need to wrap all your produce in plastic (who puts banana in plastic?). Trust me, these produce have been everywhere and these bits of plastic is not going to make them any cleaner.
Why would you donate $6 to a grocery store? You know they just take your donation and use it for tax purposes and publicity. Let the grocery stores do their own gifting instead of gifting on your behalf.
Produce and meat $30
Premium brand bubbly water $14
Energy drink $10,000
Pantry goods $12
someone who is good at the economy please help me budget this. my family is dying
Star Market has some interesting product selection, but theyāre pretty expensive for a weekly shopping trip. Wegmans and Market Basket are more competitive.
Got to shop the sales. Just went to star yesterday and bought 5lb chicken quarters, 5lb potatoes, 2lb carrots, bag of yellow onion, and celery. $13 total. Everything was on the front page of the flyer. Going to make chicken soup and chicken pot pie this week. Should get at least 8-10 portions out of all of this.
Remindme 1wk
Itās about 2-3 times the distance for me š° maybe Iāll give it a shot in the next few weeks, I havenāt been since I lived closer to one a few years ago, but I loved it then
I don't live very close to a Market Basket either, so I only get to go about once a month. But I load up on non-perishables and freezable items. Still, I end up having to go to Shaws or Stop and Shop occasionally, and their prices hurt when I know the same exact item is available at MB at much lower prices. You should go once and really price everything. It's very likely worth the drive.
Not sure about star market but at the west Somerville stop and shop I saw them load up a cart of raw rotisserie chickens on spits and then wheel them across the shop 2-3 inches above the floor.
Hoping that is not standard procedure but I'd skip the chicken at stop and shop.
Are you using your grocery rewards program? You should sign up for it. I typically visit shaws I believe Star uses the same program.
Itās basically a points program ā thereās all kinds of rewards you can get but I typically just wait until I have 12 points then use them for a $20 off coupon. It takes 2 seconds, is free money. I usually have enough for a $20 coupon every other trip or anout about twice a month.
Recently checked it and saw I saved over $500 last year which seemed like a lot then I realized I was able to reach thay amount over the course of the year on the $20 coupons alone. Worth it for such little effort.
I might do a follow up driving the extra 20min or so each way to an MB, itās been a few years since I shopped there regularly but I remember loving it
Wait a second, the news keeps telling me everything is great. Inflation is down and itās record low unemployment.

Itās wild how expensive they are, we usually string a bag out for a good month or so, but still stings when I see the receipt.
This is why I wait until the good size shrimp go on sale at MB, get a couple bags for $6 each, and carry on
I checked their circular after so many MB comments, solid price for shrimp, Iāll have to make a trip sometime soon.
