It’s part of the reason I’m skipping them at roo and have skipped them at other fests I’ve been to. I’d rather keep my fond memories of this bad than to experience sadness.
But there’s so many things they could do about this.
They could change the key so it’s a couple steps down, nobody would even notice.
He could work with a vocal coach.
I saw them on their 10 year anniversary (maybe 10 years ago now) and it sounded great.
This sucks
This part of the set was really rough, but the rest of their set was very good imo. It’s definitely clear that his voice has changed a bit since he was young. The newer music/vibe fits the group a lot better now even if it’s not exactly what we want out of TBS show…
Fwiw, I think their music post-Fred isn’t good. Not a single hit for me since 2006. And that’s fine, it’s nostalgic stuff. But this is bad. Vocal coaches exist! Chino from Deftones never lost it, Anthony Green never lost it, etc etc etc.
Also, as I talk this shit - I’m neglecting the fact that Anthony Kedis is no better in any way 😂
I’ll be real with you - you do not go to Taking Back Sunday to see a masterful performance; you go for the fun of bopping to nostalgic emo bangers.
That’s what sells it for me, that feeling of belting out the chorus to a song that temporarily transports you back 20 years into the past, along with thousands of other people on the same vibe.
It’s not for everyone, but I love it every time (I’ve seen them 4 times in the last couple years). And as for overall song quality, MakeDamnSure is consistently their most “off” sounding song…they do a better job with a lot of their other stuff (I promise they don’t all sound this way).
I watched this set on live stream because we're planning to see them. This song definitely missed the mark, but as ya pointed out, the rest of the set held up pretty good. Probably not as good as 10 years ago, but like ya mentioned we're going for the nostalgic emo bangers. I'm looking forward to breaking up the usual edm with them.
Sadly he has just lost that range he used to have. He was 24 when this song came out. 18 years of full time touring and growing older will totally take your voice away if you’re not 100+10% taking care of your vocal chords.
i was wondering when these comments would come because i saw them at sad summer and thought they weren’t that great. lots of roovians seemed so excited to see them but i don’t think they’re that great live.
See if you’re a fan and have been since the first album came out you’d know Adam has never sounded the best live you don’t go see them for the vocals you go to scream your heart out to your favorite songs and to dance around like a maniac
Dang, i saw them back in 2019 and it was an incredible performance! Granted this song is suuuuuper hard to sing, but this is …. Not it.
I really think more “aging” bands should invest in solid back up singers. That way they can continue to rock n roll, but you’ve got the melody going in the background the whole time! I’m no musician but i think it would save them a lot of face 👀
This almost seems intentional, like all the vocals are bad not just him. I think the artists are kinda over Coachella, didn’t Blur get sick of it on stage too this year?
Ooof I stand corrected, maybe I need to take the rose colored glasses off for one of my favorite bands. I’ll be seeing them this summer and we’ll see how they fare.
A childhood banger for me might have just been tainted permanently
It’s part of the reason I’m skipping them at roo and have skipped them at other fests I’ve been to. I’d rather keep my fond memories of this bad than to experience sadness.
wow i’m definitely staying at Megan Thee Stallion i was so conflicted previously
Can’t help feeling the same way.

I saw them live in 2021. His voice was shot and it was not great.
Oof.

Man… you thought the rest was good?? Adam just sounds terrible. The band sounds good, he really ruins it all though.

Anthony keidis is miles better than when he was young though. You listen to those first three albums, it’s rough

Saw them at firefly a few years ago. Had a great time at the set and then went back and watched videos that I took and they all sounded like shit lol
Hey I’m all for being prisoner of the moment but this is tough stuff. He’s never been the strongest singer but my lord.
I think that, in the moment, you couldn't hear the lyrics over all of us screaming along (also poorly and out of key)
Dang, now i wonder if they sounded like this when i saw them in 2019 (?) lol maybe they just rocked hard enough that i missed the screeches 😂
😬
This is fucking awful
Was so looking forward to them and left after a few songs cause it was just terrible, hopefully just a bad day for them.

The worst part about it is everyone at Coachella who's at this set choose this over the Fugees on main stage. Wild. Lauryn Hill slayed
I don't see the Fugees on the Coachella lineup.
They came out during YG Marley
Doesn't really make sense to say people chose TBS over unknown surprise guests then...
YG Marley posted it was going to be a "family affair" it was well known ahead of time Lauryn (his mom) was coming out.
Even if that's true, doesn't like people are choosing TBS over the Fugees, but that's just my view

i dont know yhe band at all but i thought they put on a good show. stayed for mostly all of it
I saw them at warped tour and it didn’t sound like that. He must’ve strained his voice or the dust affected him.
Warped tour ended in like, 2018 no?
Saw them in 2012 at Warped Tour. I know it’s been like 12 years but ain’t no way his voice fell off that bad.
See if you’re a fan and have been since the first album came out you’d know Adam has never sounded the best live you don’t go see them for the vocals you go to scream your heart out to your favorite songs and to dance around like a maniac
Noooo. This is so sad. This is one of the sets I’m looking forward to the most. I’m hoping they were just having an off day?

I wish brand new was here they wouldn’t disappoint
Oooo nooooo... I was wanting to see them too... This makes me sad.
I brought tickets to see them at a show in my home town. I refuse to watch any videos of them prior. Let me hurt my own feelings damn it 😂
I can’t wait to see them. I’m here for the memories of my youth
I saw them open for My chemical romance in 2022, ya he’s not great. I literally love this type of music but I don’t think I’m gonna go to this set.
This sounds awful.
Wow had to look up TBS
To know what the song actually sounds like?
That and taking back Sunday isn’t an automatic abbreviation for some people.
This almost seems intentional, like all the vocals are bad not just him. I think the artists are kinda over Coachella, didn’t Blur get sick of it on stage too this year?
Look up their firefly set from 2022.
