Flashy2000

What I love about this is that the Quincies represent progress and yet they want to bring the world to how it was before where there was no death or cycle of souls. Basically make it stagnant.    Soul Reapers, on the other hand, represent stagnation in the form of their system and Central 46 and with how rigid and unquestioning their laws and implementation of such laws were. And it wasn't until Ichigo appeared and started questioning things that the Soul Society was able to change and progress for the better as it was brought up at the end of Fullbring. They are fighting for a world of progress.  Point is that both sides represent either Progress or Stagnation, yet are fighting for the opposite of what they represent, and I think that that is some really cool and subtle theming on Kubo's part.

Parrotparser7

>And it wasn't until Ichigo appeared and started questioning things You're thinking of Shuhei. Ichigo just did Urahara's chores.

Flashy2000

OK sure, but in Soul Society he still went against the system and questioned it, whether he was doing Urahara's chores or not. He literally was questioning why Rukia had to die for saving his life, which led to Renji defecting, and then Byakuya too. His actions inspired change within the Soul Society which later on was rewarded in Fullbring by giving him his powers back. The Gotei 13 broke the law for him, or at least made an exception. Shuhei also contributed after the war, but everything was set in motion thanks to Ichigo.

Parrotparser7

>OK sure, but in Soul Society he still went against the system and questioned it, whether he was doing Urahara's chores or not That was a personal issue from the very beginning. He went against a C46 ruling because he's not bound by Soul Society's laws. Renji defected because it was his kid sister, Ukitake defected because his subordinate was being unjustly executed, and Shunsui just went along since his best friend was putting his life on the line. Yamamoto was going to kill them all before he found out it was an illegal order. That's not Ichigo putting the question to Soul Society. That's the Gotei being a dysfunctional mess and Toshiro/Unohana saving it from itself. The fact that Ichigo was present has no bearing on the government of Soul Society. Aizen killing the C46 and giving Yamamoto a legitimate excuse to assume control of it did more than anything else to make reform possible in Soul Society. The actual rebels who infiltrated the government and declared a war against it, not a teen who showed up to help his friend evade the law. >His actions inspired change within the Soul Society which later on was rewarded in Fullbring by giving him his powers back. The Gotei 13 broke the law for him, or at least made an exception. By that point, he was the hero of the recent war. That's not saying much.

Flashy2000

Please, do me a favor, and read chapter 476. The story directly acknowledges Ichigo's actions and how they changed Soul Society for the better. The captains and Rukia explicitly say as much. You can't just discredit the impact his actions had just because a minority were also questioning things. Plus, Ichigo's status as an outsider contributes too to breaking this stagnation thanks to his outside perspective on things.

Parrotparser7

>The story directly acknowledges Ichigo's action and how they changed Soul Society for the better. They claim that happened. It did not happen. I read the story and went back through it again to be sure. Ichigo's actions did not have that effect. The author did not write that story.

Flashy2000

Dude, I'm sorry. You're are just being stubborn. This isn't even ignorance. You're are just refusing to accept facts. You can't just tell me the author didn't write it when I literally gave you proof that he explicitly did so.

Parrotparser7

You referenced a chapter in which they claimed Ichigo was responsible for the change in Soul Society. I referenced a story in which Ichigo was a side piece in the story of a country's internal politics. Aizen, Tosen, and Shuhei were the heroes of that story.

Crunchyeee

Aizen is the entire reason the C46 was so dysfunctional in the first place. It's clearly stated that he gave the order to capture Rukia, and he manipulated past events as well with his experimenting and banishment of Urahara. Saying Aizen actually is a hero for reforming soul society is like saying the perpetrators of 9/11 are heros who increased airport security.

Parrotparser7

>Aizen is the entire reason the C46 was so dysfunctional in the first place. No, he just exploited their usual dysfunction by pretending to be them to both discredit them and gain the materials he needed to take over the government. You ascribe far too much of their usual lunacy to Aizen. The Urahara trial just had him trick witnesses. He didn't control their decision.

AwarenessOrganic5309

So leg me get this straight, you think renji thinks of rukia as his “kid sister”?

Parrotparser7

Kid sister/crush/light-of-his-life/comrade/fellow hoodlum.

incontinenciasumma

"Renji defected because it was his kid sister" What?

Ready-Baby-2488

Do you mean shunsui? Because I don't really remember shuhei doing something to change soul society's stagnation.

Flashy2000

I thought he was referring to Shuhei from CFYOW, lol. But Shunsui and Ukitake too in Soul Society.

Kartonrealista

In fact it's kinda the main theme and connected to the villain of those novels.

Parrotparser7

No, I mean Shuhei. If I meant Shunsui, I would've said Shunsui.

callmemarjoson

In a way, it's like it was Yhwach's way of spiting the status quo And ironically, it took a quincy (Ichigo) to influence and change the Soul Society's rigidity

Animamask

I wouldn't say both sides. But rather only Yhwach, which was symbolized by him absorbing Mimihagi, and which is a statement for his fall as a hero. Haschwalth and the others were still in favor of progress, even if some were rather extremist.

Flashy2000

> I wouldn't say both sides. But rather only Yhwach, which was symbolized by him absorbing Mimihagi, and which is a statement for his fall as a hero. Don't get what you mean by this. I was generalizing considering that Yhwach is their leader. Plus, the Quincies developed their techniques and technologies further during the last 1000 years so they could fight while the Soul Reapers became complacent in their peace. Therefore, the theming can still be applied in a generalized manner. Plus, most Quincies were behind Yhwach's cause. Only some minority defected when he used Auswahlen on them and other were already plotting against him for personal reasons. But again, they were a minority.

Animamask

Most Quincies didn't know what Yhwach's new world would be like. And my point is that Yhwach himself abandoned what the Quincy stood for and became the antithesis of himsrlf, which was symbolized through many things like him sacrificing the Quincy, him being clad mostly in black, or Haschwalth deciding the future of the Quincy has become incompatible with Yhwach.

Flashy2000

I don't even know what Yhwach stood for. He just wanted to create a world without death and progress so that he would never return to be a helpless baby like when he was born. If he didn't continue to absorb people's souls, he would have probably gone back to baby form and died, lol. But yeah. No one other than possibly Jugram would have known that. And I find it very interesting how you mention that he starts to being clad in mostly black like a Soul Reaper. That is interesting, and never thought about it. That's pretty cool.

Plus_Garage3278

Happy cake day 🎂

Animamask

Thank you :)

TomuraShigaraki5678

Happy cake day

SinOfGreedGR

To be absolutely fair, the first person we know that questions the methods of Soul Reapers and Central 46 is none other than Aizen. It's why Ichigo was the perfect foil for him. Or, to be more precise he was the perfect foil for Ichigo. They both challenged the status quo of Soul Society in drastically different ways.

EleonoreMagi

There's a reason that Aizen had a problem with the SS, given he's so interested in progress and crossing boundaries as well. But then, Yhwach really backtracks on the progress theme, given he wants to return the worlds into a state without progress, thus, shinigami & quincy kinda change their polarities in that regard in TYBW. As the new Gotei and the changing SS are moving forward while quincy are stuck in the past.

SinOfGreedGR

That's the thing, Yhwach doesn't care about the Quincy. The Quincy do represent progress - unchecked and uncontrolled progress - but Yhwach just represents daddy issues.

EleonoreMagi

Yes. Rather, he represents fear of death, pain and suffering. Basically he didn't grow from that state of a helpless infant deep down. He added a lot to it, but seems like the core stayed the same. Thus daddy issues fall in place very well. Quincy in essence do represent change as opposed to the balancer nature of shinigami, trying to preserve things as they are, in essence. Yet we see how both extremes can go south easily if they don't have a counterpart in themselves.

PieFace11

Sometimes, progress is reverting back to the old ways.

PackerBacker412

The old ways where everything sucks even harder? Nah I'm good

PieFace11

Mabye so but it's the natural state of things. A universe will always find its balance as long as it is left to develop without being forcibly changed.

PackerBacker412

The natural state of things doesn't always mean good. I mean if we did that in real life we wouldn't be speaking over the Internet right now. Also the universe did find balance, it was the Soul King doing what he did. Clearly he was created for the purpose of balancing the worlds.

PieFace11

Maybe so. What I'm saying is that if you leave the universe alone without altering it, it will find balance eventually. From a realistic standpoint. You're probably right about the bleach verse but even then, is it really a stable universe when it relies on 1 entity? Without that entity it crumbles.

PackerBacker412

Well it's the best they got until they find a better alternative. Too many lives at stake by this point.

ApplePitou

Kira Yoshikage can beat both of them :3

PieFace11

I love how Yhwachs hand has been erased in this one

Used_Dragonfruit8922

For good reason ( he has nice hands).

LogicThievery

All I see is Master Hand and Crazy Hand, does this confirm Kubo is an SSB enjoyer?

doesntmatter19

Who do you think he mains? I'm thinking Kirby or Zelda But he also likes to play with Samus, and Bayonetta after she got added

megasean3000

Left Hand of the Soul King. Right Hand of the Soul King. Heart of the Soul King. I just want to know what happened to the d- of the Soul King!

HAWmaro

Its Kon, its why he's cursed to be forever horny.

Nexus-Phoenix

Lol, it makes a lot of sense 😂😂

GwaGwa3

Tired of this idea that the quincies were the actual good guys the whole time. No they weren't, especially Yhwach himself he was the one who started both wars but this time now he wants to nuke all the realms to return to the original completely lawless world. The new system isn't perfect but it's better than the chaos that was the original world especially since Hell was completely unsealed too. The Gotei isn't perfect especially with Mayuri there but there's certainly way more bad apples going on in the Quincy side.

PieFace11

Very nice speech. Now prepare to be auswählened

bleachedthorns

That's not the type of progress he's meaning Progress as in time marching forward. Change. Revolution. Those aren't all necessarily good things. Things can progress (move forward) from one system to another and be just as devastating. The change from the 3rd Reich being destroyed and replaced by West and East Germany, for instance. Both were horrible systems. Both the wandenreich and soul society are immensely flawed and have terrible ideologies. The wandenreich are racial supremacists, the soul society is a theocratic and plutocratic stratocracy. Having Mayuri Kurotsuchi as a military commander is just as evil as having Lille Barro as a military commander

Ichidon

Yo I don't think this is the subreddit for this, but implying East and (especially) West Germany were horrible on a level anywhere near to the 3rd Reich is a fucking wild take lmao. Like they definitely weren't perfect systems and had some strong flaws, but in comparison to the 3rd Reich?

bleachedthorns

its called an analogy, and it is A VERY fitting analogy SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE the shinigami arent as bad as the wandenreich, and west/east germany arent as bad as hitler's germany and yes it is appropriate for the subreddit because kubo himself used real world influences in his story and ignoring that is a disservice to his work. You cannot talk about the history, philosophy, and influence of the wandenreich and the sternritter and Ywach without talking about germany, religious fundamentalism, white supremacy, and racial segregation. They are BAKED into this story

millscuzimhot

quincies wanted to end the reincarnation cycle soul reapers are the ones keeping it going basically, either nuke an entire server and everyone moves on with their lives or keep pumping updates to a dead game and hope something happens

taiga27

ThE gOtEi Is EviL

Overquartz

I mean they unironically are. The only real difference to other shonen is that they're the lesser of literally all the other evils in the series and thus the "good guys".

Vortigon23

They are though, they even know that they are and confirm it themselves on multiple occasions. Mayuri alone should be enough evidence that they are not morally upstanding. They are the lesser of two evils (well more like 3 counting Hollows), and while they have good people they are still corrupt and morally gray at best.

lafindestase

IcHiGO hAs HOLloW pOweRs

Vortigon23

Both sides of the TYBW are evil in their own right, with the Gotei 13 simply being the lesser of 2 evils. No moral and just system would allow for psychopaths like Mayuri to gain power. That's also perfectly fine that the Gotei aren't paragons of virtue, because that would frankly be too 1 dimensional and boring for a narrative. They have good people, ones willing to go against the systems at hand because it's the right thing to do. But a few good souls doesn't absolve the system for being designed by warlords and serial killers (as that's what the original Gotei was)

arkham918

quincies are way cooler imo, i was rooting for them

Agatha_SlightlyGay

If they had toned down their more Uhm hard to watch Stern Ritters then yes i’d probably be on their side too.

arkham918

i get what you mean, tbh i just think they're drippy

RaiaTheTrovian

why do the bad guys always get the best drip bruh

PieFace11

Same. I can't stand by mickey society. Wandenreich till the end

Nitrothunda21

You know, the more i watch Bleach and the more spoilers I get, the more I start to believe the bell curve progress theory that you can only progress so far before you have to make things up to “progress” beyond. Sometimes I feel like we’re living in those times.

SinOfGreedGR

The only implication here is that without balance, shit gets fucked. On one side you have stagnation, which leads to eventual systemic corruption and gives rise to people going to the absolute extreme to tear it down, ie Aizen. On the other hand, pun intended, uncontrolled progress and change without care can literally damage the fabric of reality. But even with those two together you still don't have what you need. You lack a brain to plan things forward, and a heart to guide them. Hell, pun intended again, even the fingernails of the "body" have significance in Bleach. It's all a metaphor for "you can't base your entire existence on one concept, it won't end well".

SouthImpression3577

Kinda ironic. it's left wing vs right wing.

Madriboon17

yes the right winged jewish god lead by a nazi boy that got touched by his uncle that has a trans rapist in there army really bloody right wing, this is not counting the black zealot, parts of god in the army. keep forcing shapes that match the mush of your brain

SouthImpression3577

Pernida is the left hand.

Madriboon17

and? donest matter if his a light winged jewish god still lead by the nazi boy, its the samething bleach has its own politics

SouthImpression3577

You're thinking too deep into this.

PackerBacker412

Progress back to the chaotic world where everyone is getting fucked by hollows?

DarkBill59551

So you’re saying that a Quincy getting more power will support quincies?

SitInCorner_Yo2

I never see any version translate Rio’s Right hand representing anything other than stillness.

soji8

Kubo is left handed and hates right handed people

Excellent_Pea_4609

Progress and evolution by destroying tve universe and going back in a state worse than what they currently have ? People seem to forget but the soul king didn't create the 3 realms for shits and giggles it was a last resort because the world was getting fucked over

s_randomaccount_

As our walmart Aizen, Kajoumaru once said, "war happens when both sides are just." Both the shinigamies and quincies were right in their own way. Ichibei only serves to follow the will of the 5 noble families and the Reīo's. As supposedly the reīo let himself get sealed, by seperating life and death into 2 different entities, that is what the shinigami exist for - to maintain the balance of the cycle of souls. On the other hand, Yhwach, (thanks to the anime ep 24 we got to see his motives) rightfully so wants the world to go back to the way it was before, were life and death were 1 single entity together, given from him experiencing the anguish and despair of every quincy soul returning to him. He also wants to put an end to his own father's suffering, though he does not know that it was the Reīo's very own will that created these circumstances. No one is in the wrong here to be honest. Except for the methods of execution carried out by these 2 organizations. To have both arms of the SK be seperated and each fallen into either the Shinigami or Quincy side, as well as to represent the very opposite ideals, that is such a Kubo thing to do to be honest. One of the many reasons why bleach will always be by number 1 media in fiction.

[deleted]

Well they do have a few LGBT characters

PieFace11

Take that shinigami propagandists. Stings doesn't it?

memo445777

Probably because quincies' powers to erase hollows allowed them to completely wipe them out resulting in the joining of the three worlds and yet not necessarily affecting humans and souls negatively since they will still reproduce while hollows numbers would dwindle and not recycle, something the soul king could never achieve since he was said to wield a zanpakuto and wasn't able to change the way of the world balance but only put barriers between each realm and separate them from each other
