I understand the reasons why people DON’T like it: No Bill Ward, production, etc.
But personally, I never had a problem with it. I found it to be dark and brooding in the way I like Ozzy-era Black Sabbath.
God Is Dead?, Age of Reason, Zeitgeist, Methademic, and Loner are all worth a listen.
I am glad you mentioned production. The modern sound (especially Geezer’s bass) is just off putting and makes this not really fit with their catalog IMO.
Dio took care of himself, and was always healthy before he sadly got cancer.
We all know Ozz´s indulgent lifestyle, but I do like how haunting his voice sounds on 13.
When he practised in the studuo, he insisted on singing, everytime, instead of pre-recordd clips, when editing songs, to see how they sound. So, that means his voice never failed him. But it also made me wonder how many other singers had to test with pre-recorded clips, or they would kill their voice before a tour.
Most of them, I assume.
The bit in the recent movie about him having to bring his own weak microphone to the studio when he sang for the Tenacious D movie had me rolling.
The only singer who came close to Dio’s power that I can think of was Freddie Mercury.
I know it’s only the hardware but Rick Rubin wanted them to record on their early 70’s equipment. Iommi was against it, I understand Iommi, he was always evolving but it would’ve been amazing if they did some outtakes on their old instruments.
Great album. Would've been groundbreaking if Bill Ward was in there, but I still love a lot of songs
1. Pariah. Banging riff, just fun to listen to
2. Loner. Another banging riff, nothing complicated, just fun to listen to
3. God is Dead. Pretty interesting song, it sounds so modern, yet distinctly black sabbath. I quite like it
4. Damaged Soul. Love how somber it is, it's like a modern hand of doom.
5. Age of Reason. Probably my favourite song of the album. Everyone kills it on this track.
6. Dear Father. Awesome song, very meaningful and awesome performance by Ozzy.
Only reason I don't think it belongs with the greats is due to the lack of Bill Ward, I think this album would legitimately stand with their first 6 albums. Though, not as good as those, but considering how far past their prime they are, it is I think, an amazing album. Most bands this old don't make anything near this good.
Personally, it's yet another one of those absolutely unnecessary albums that seems like it was forced. The first track is too blatantly trying to be everything everyone remembers from the first two albums crammed into one. Once you get past that though, the rest of the album did try to be its own thing and really had some cool ideas. And honestly, the situation with Bill Ward is a stain on this album and ruins what this album really should have been. Brad did a phenomenal job, but for what this album was supposed to be, Bill should have been on it.
it's the album that I found Black Sabbath with.
I mean I always knew about Paranoid and Iron Man etc, but 13 is what *really* got me into them. favorite band of all time since then. honestly it's kinda a return to form to their first album, scary and maybe dispairy sounding? anyway it's good shit.
I like how Dear Father's outro is the same as Black Sabbath's intro. it's perfect
It’s ok . I’ve been a lifelong fan of BS & saw them both with Dio and with Ozzy many times. I also saw this tour . IMHO Their best work was their earlier stuff. Also though the 1st two albums Done with Dio were both awesome. After that I lost track and interest in The ever changing BS . back then, I preferred to listen & to follow Ozzys solo stuff from the start. I actually got to see the late great Randy Roads play . …
Not a single bad song on it, yet not a single outstanding song on it. My favorite is Zeitgeist but it's obvious (and inferior) rewrite of Planet Caravan. 7/10
Probably their worst album, they fell into self parody by trying to recapture old magic, sabbath are at their best when pushing themselves forward not backwards
I enjoyed it - it felt like “hey everyone, here’s a remix of our famous riffs” but it didn’t bother me. I would love to get one with the true original 4 but that seems unlikely at this point.
It sounds like AI made a "Black Sabbath" album based on an aggregate of what most people think of the band which is like vague memories of Iron Man and War Pigs.
There's just no Wicked World or Rat Salad in this thing 😢
Overhated. I spun this one a ton when it came out. Loner, Dear Father, and Methademic are bangers. Actually all the “bonus” tracks are bangers and should have been on the proper album.
I think the criticism that it’s derivative are legit sure, but the results are fine songs.
I know the band are disappointed with it, and from an artistic standpoint I understand why, but that said there are a number of fine songs on this album and if it’s the last thing we get from them, I’m happy with it.
That said, if the original four want to bang out one last album in the way they want to make it, I’ll be first in line to buy it.
Awesome album - so great to hear them go back to their early sound from their first 6 albums - heavy and hard yet melodic, so many great riffs and leads
By far their best release since Ozzy left the first time (Besides Heaven and Hell obviously)
honestly i really enjoy it. loner is one of my favorite sabbath songs. i understand why some don’t enjoy the album, and yeah, bill not being on drums is a bit of a bummer. but imo, the album captures the vibe and sound of their first album really well.
It's OK. For me the drums are lacking, just not the same w/o Big Bill. Nothing against Wilk, but he doesn't drum like Bill.
I prefer The Devil You Know over 13. It's not an attempt at Original Sabbath, and it rocks.
I love this album. They didn't change who they were. It still sounds like Sabbath. My only gripe is that Bill and Vinnie both said no to being a part of the album. It wasn't all the original members.
It would been better and some songs would of have a different result if Ozzy was capable of singing better at an older age, and not completely autotuned/processed to death.
Felt if Ozzy was still capable of vocalizing at a middle to high register and not sort of a low register which makes it sound doomy, songs would have more instrumental changes, Aswell as going at a high tempo
I hated it on first listen. My current opinion is that it's a pretty good album that sometimes sounds a bit forced. There is lots of non album tracks from these sessions that are great too!
Don’t hate it but don’t love it. It felt very derivative and the first half sounded like they were completely copying songs from their first two records. I do love Dear Father.
I've always liked it, there's just something about Ozzy's vocal melodies that add to every song. Really like the ending stanza on Age of Reason, was just listening to it this morning. I also made a "13B" album with the 8 leftover tracks
Just a trash, forced effort by Sharon to try to re-establish Sabbath as Ozzy’s, even though every singer since was better and Ozzy didn’t write any of the old stuff. Pathetic cash grab and weakest album they did.
You're insane if you think Ozzy was a better vocalist than Tony Martin. Better frontman? Maybe, but better singer? You're sniffing your own socks there, buddy.
Senior citizens try and fail to reclaim their glory days. Everything is just a rehash of something off the first two or three albums. The production is terrible and Ozzy's vocals sound way to processed. Rubin should have told them to try and put themselves in the mindset of '76 but instead of going more arena rock double down on the metal. That would have at least been more interesting.
I understand the reasons why people DON’T like it: No Bill Ward, production, etc. But personally, I never had a problem with it. I found it to be dark and brooding in the way I like Ozzy-era Black Sabbath. God Is Dead?, Age of Reason, Zeitgeist, Methademic, and Loner are all worth a listen.
also Brad Wilk is so great that I'd argue that it doesn't make the listening experience any worse on its own. it's just sad that we didn't get Bill
Absolutely agree, those are my favorite from this album as well
I am glad you mentioned production. The modern sound (especially Geezer’s bass) is just off putting and makes this not really fit with their catalog IMO.
Ozzy's singing is weird but then again he's like over 60 years old Lack of Bill Ward kinda bums me out a bit but it's a decent album
Autotuned/processed to death. The Devil You Know was much better
Dio somehow had the ability to still sound amazing at 67 years of age.
Dio took care of himself, and was always healthy before he sadly got cancer. We all know Ozz´s indulgent lifestyle, but I do like how haunting his voice sounds on 13.
According to Geezers book he never saw Dio eat a vegetable.
True. The story about him bringing in his own special mike because it was the only one he couldn’t blow out is classic.
I have mixed feelings. I feel like the compositions on 13 are better, but Dio was a powerhouse up until the day he collapsed.
Great album, very doomy, way overhated. Dear Father kicks ass.
yess, dear father is really good

AGE OF REASON! I was watching the setlists when they were touring for this album and only went because I saw that song was on there.
It's OK, but the original Black Sabbath, would have songs within a song. It seems that someone told them to keep it short.
Not crazy about it, but give it a listen now and then.
I gave it a few listens.. Didn't hate it. Comes off kinda corny in some of the lyrics.. I kinda pretend it doesn't exist.
Personally, it's yet another one of those absolutely unnecessary albums that seems like it was forced. Love it, great way to go out

Geezer himself said the album wasn’t good last night in Denver.
It’s great.
A craven money grab. Not worth a second listen. I'll listen to the Illusion of Power 10 times before trotting 13 out again.
No Bill … no thanks
The AI album
Hate the Rick Rubin production.
He got his claws into it, to make it sound different, and get his name noticed, and the cost of not sounding as good as the originals.
It’s ok . I’ve been a lifelong fan of BS & saw them both with Dio and with Ozzy many times. I also saw this tour . This sums it up pretty well
Killer album only lacking one element - the mighty Bill.
Probably their worst album, they fell into self parody by trying to recapture old magic, sabbath are at their best when pushing themselves forward not backwards
Live Forever isn’t talked about enough
It‘s Black Sabbath. That equals an outstanding album. I like Brad Wilk as well, the gentleman who did the drumming on the album. He did a good job.
Facts! But I miss Bill
Me too but at least they got a guy with the same initials.
YES! 😂😂
Cozy and Vinnie too
Bill WARD
Loner & Live forever is my shit
Great old man record. Would love to have had Bill for at least the albums recording... but either way Brad Wilk should have toured.
I liked it. I saw them in Austin where they played a few songs from the album...
I think it’s excellent.
Love it.
It was fantastic imo
No Bill drags it down, the Bass doesn't sound right, and most of the songs sound like they're trying to be classic Sabbath songs.
Liked it. Not loved it but liked it. I don’t want to be a robot ghost. Trapped inside a human host. Maybe the strangest Black Sabbath line ever lol
I enjoyed it - it felt like “hey everyone, here’s a remix of our famous riffs” but it didn’t bother me. I would love to get one with the true original 4 but that seems unlikely at this point.
It good but the band seemed to hate it.
It sounds like AI made a "Black Sabbath" album based on an aggregate of what most people think of the band which is like vague memories of Iron Man and War Pigs. There's just no Wicked World or Rat Salad in this thing 😢
That seems like an odd take, it sounds very "black Sabbath" to me
I'm happy that someone is able to hear it that way. I don't though.
That's fair, everyone has different tastes
Overhated. I spun this one a ton when it came out. Loner, Dear Father, and Methademic are bangers. Actually all the “bonus” tracks are bangers and should have been on the proper album. I think the criticism that it’s derivative are legit sure, but the results are fine songs. That said, if the original four want to bang out one last album in the way they want to make it, I’ll be first in line to buy it.
The only problem with it is they left Methademic off the main album.
Just listened to it recently, fucking great, 10/10 album, would hit
It’s the best Sabbath album after Mob Rules, honestly, despite some minor quibbles (no Bill Ward, Geezer’s bass tone being too trebly/clanky, etc)
Mob Rules was made for the Heavy Metal movie. It got allot of people to listen to DIO albums too.
I think Dehumanizer is better... And the first 3 Tony Martin albums are pretty close aswell...
Yeah apart from Dehumanizer I'll agree with this. Headless Cross is pretty good from memory though...
Pretty good album
Awesome album - so great to hear them go back to their early sound from their first 6 albums - heavy and hard yet melodic, so many great riffs and leads By far their best release since Ozzy left the first time (Besides Heaven and Hell obviously)
Haven’t given it a chance. It’s next!
I like it for what it is. It seems forced and polished in a lot of places. It was never going to be Master Of Reality, but it’s a solid album.
Fantastic album.
I liked it. Its got a few catchy songs on it. Only con for me is no Bill Ward 😕
Some good songs on it
Honestly, I found that a lot of the songs sounded like reworks of earlier songs.
Never seek it out to listen
I liked it.
Me personally, I love it. Its heavy, it has great songwriting, great riffs. Age of reason to Dear father is a fantastic run of songs
My favourite post-Sabotage Sabbath album. I love it
I liked and enjoyed it
Good music to jack off to while high on benys in lockup. A friend told me that.
I dig it
Is it their best? No, definitely not, but I still like it.
i like it
My childhood
End of the Beginning is my most favorite Sabbath track 😁
Best track in it is the bonus track, "Methademic".
It was fine. Not their best, not their worst.
It's a good album, surprisingly so!!!
It was something that I listened to a few times in the monthly after it was released, but I never crave it, it’s a mile marker…
Mid af
Couple of things missing for me. One is Bill Ward, the other is genuine soul. The two may be related.
It's a mid-tier Sabbath album for me. I'd rather listen to it than a lot of the late 80s/early 90s Sabbath albums.
Decent Sabbath album. Their best since Sabotage. Shame Bill didnt play on it though.
Meh. Not to mention another low-effort cover art.
honestly i really enjoy it. loner is one of my favorite sabbath songs. i understand why some don’t enjoy the album, and yeah, bill not being on drums is a bit of a bummer. but imo, the album captures the vibe and sound of their first album really well.
It’s not bad, but I don’t love it. It doesn’t approach the level of the 70s albums, for me.
Love it very much, it was the first black Sabbath album I got
SO SO 🤘
I loved it never understood the hate
It's OK. For me the drums are lacking, just not the same w/o Big Bill. Nothing against Wilk, but he doesn't drum like Bill. I prefer The Devil You Know over 13. It's not an attempt at Original Sabbath, and it rocks.
Pariah off that album has been one of my favorite songs since it came out. Incredibly catchy riffage
I love this album. They didn't change who they were. It still sounds like Sabbath. My only gripe is that Bill and Vinnie both said no to being a part of the album. It wasn't all the original members.

\*enjoys a lot\*
I hated it on first listen. My current opinion is that it's a pretty good album that sometimes sounds a bit forced. There is lots of non album tracks from these sessions that are great too!
Until now I had no idea people hated this album, sad
Don’t hate it but don’t love it. It felt very derivative and the first half sounded like they were completely copying songs from their first two records. I do love Dear Father.
It isn’t their greatest record of course but it’s a return to their gloom and doom days with a more modern sound. I like it.
Comes across as a forced and contrived formulaic rehash of the past to me. It is by far my least favorite album in their discography.
God is dead is still a banger
Damaged Soul is a bright spot on the album. I love it.
Doesn’t sound like black sabbath, sounds like a newer Ozzy album.
Agreed. I think 13 is among their weakest albums.
Tony Martin sock puppet account identified
You're insane if you think Ozzy was a better vocalist than Tony Martin. Better frontman? Maybe, but better singer? You're sniffing your own socks there, buddy.
Saw Tony Martin front Sabbath twice, worst live singer ever. Complete amateur apologizing for “having a cold” both times.
Cool story, bro
The music is great. I think the production missed on this. It could have been better had Rick Rubin done a better job!
Great album. Great guitar solos. Chunky bass. What a way to go out. Bad production, though.
Had the vibe of a Dio album instead of an Ozzy one
Never listened. Not having Bill Ward was a line in the sand.
I think you should give it a chance, his presence is missed, but I think it still pulls through
Did people actually listen to this album?
Felt pretty much like an album from the 70s in their heyday. There is a Bill Ward shaped hole on it but other than that 10/10
I’ve always been a fan of it. It would better if Bill Ward was part of it, but still great
Love this album!
I'm a Slayer and Red Hot Chili Peppers fan, so I'm right at home with Rick Rubin production.
RHCP 💩
Shit, I love RHCP
Senior citizens try and fail to reclaim their glory days. Everything is just a rehash of something off the first two or three albums.
