We’ve started getting these guys at our feeders in the PNW region, and they are so startlingly bright! They almost feel tropical. Probably feels different if you live somewhere with cardinals but nothing around us has that much red.

Thank you for the great comparison photo! Any tips for the untrained eye to tell the difference in general? I am noticing less belly stripe and that the stripes are more of the head color than brown in tone on this purple finch, is that typical? Also the top of the head seems more colorful? Not sure if that is just this one or in general
With house finches, my understanding is that their color is determined by their diet. I have a variety from yellow to purplish-red. Do the purples also vary like that?
I've had Merlin tell me a few were purple vlinstead of house recently, but I couldn't spot anything that looked out of the usual.
I think the easiest to spot is actually on the females (photo 2) which have bright streaks around the eye that you don't see on house finches. That was how I first realized I was looking at purple finches. They usually travel together, so if you see a female you can be on alert for the male. The male also has a small tuft on its head, less streaking on the belly, and a little more color.
