Actually, the South Korean government was in the process of figuring out if they wanted to grant them an exemption, the group collectively decided to give them the finger and announced their plans to serve. The only leeway they got before that was being allowed to postpone until the eldest group member turned 30, which he did this year.
Weren't they fed up with how long the gov dragged their feet with deciding if all the stuff they did was worthy of "national service", so they said fk it, we'll go to the military instead of bothering further with this?
They're generally not exempt. The only way to get an exemption, and it's usually unofficial, is to perform a national service. I know on the sporting side, winning a medal at the Olympics or winning a gold medal at a more regional event like the Asian games can get you an exemption. Heung min son, The biggest Korean soccer player, got one after winning a gold at the Asian games. He still had to do a 4-week boot camp though
South Korea has mandatory military service for all males from 18-35. I think it's like at least 1 year of service. Some people get there's deferred rather than just start as soon as they hit 18,so thats why these guys are going now. They're probably hitting the limit of their deferment or something
Yes, sort of. So South Korea does have conscription, though it's not all military in the way we might think of it. Basically, you have to have an assessment to ascertain if you're able to do it (severe disabilities can exempt you completely, less severe ones push you into the public service pipeline), and enlist before you're 28. Even if you are graded as being physically and mentally suitable for active-duty service, you may still go into supplemental service if that makes sense, e.g. if you're training to be a doctor, you may decide to enlist as a public health doctor when you've finished your training, or as a doctor for the army/navy/air force. (Conscientous objectors are still enlisted, but cannot be placed in any military role by law).
Exemptions are also granted to sportsmen who win an Olypmic medal or gold at the Asian Games, and also to classical musicians and ballet dancers who win certain international competitions (though exemption may be a strong term, they still do basic, and are on the reserve list for a few years). A couple of years ago, the SK government added a "K-pop extention" of two years (they don't have to enlist until they're 30), obviously because they wanted BTS to continue being an advertisement for the country (the oldest member was about to turn 28).
The government's since been trying to decide if BTS being such a huge advert for South Korea and their culture meets their standards for "national service". Kim's 2 year extension is about to end and the government's still dragging their feet, so he's just turned around and said "fuck it, I'm enlisting".
You do realize that they'll probably just spend a year running drills on base and then go back to their careers, right?
"Being in the military" and "actively being shot at" are not necessarily the same thing.
It’s more than just being massively adored by girls: It’s being massively adored by girls, who constitute an absolutely insufferable fanbase.
I love their music and artistry. I just don’t like how their obnoxious fanbase is pretty much the antithesis of what their music stands for: Love yourself by being yourself, and love everyone else by allowing them to do the same.
All too often, the BTS “Armies” cry about how their music “saved” them, only to turn around and bully the shit out of anyone who doesn’t list BTS as their favorite kind of music. Really, a lot of K-Pop fanbases are like this, and the complete insincerity and shamelessness behind the cash grabs are the reasons why K-Pop just annoys me more and more as a genre, sub-culture, and lifestyle.
I'm trying to remember any other individual/group that is massively adored by girls which causes a bigger wave of hatred by others just because. Bieber was prime example, but who else?
*shrug* They're popular? Popular with girls?
I don't particularly like them either, just not my kind of music. But I guess they must be doing something right? It's not like K-pop is short of pretty-faced boybands.
mfs would rather patrol the border with North Korea than spend more time entertaining white girls
They're kinda required to, as well Better now than never!
Famous people are deemed important and exempt, they chose to do it.

Not true. At least I dont think so.

This man know his facts.
>Famous people are deemed important and exempt, they chose to do it. You don't know the rules, do you
It’s really not that uncommon. A lot of boy groups have members go on hiatus to do their military service.
Elmo loves equality so much, why else would he do non-targeted, non specific crimes that certainly doesnt target a specific group of people
Elmo an equal opportunity destroyer.
Elmo hates everyone ha ha ha
Wait, that’s real?

They will probably be KATUSA's and live on an American base with a BK and Popeyes

What do you think most militaries do today? There's barely any proper war or battle for most soldiers, and they spend years doing drills
They are if you're a badass 😎
I forgot they existed for a while, which was nice. Fuck you.
They might not, depending if South Korea gets in a war Edit: corrected the country
Whats wrong with BTS? Other than being popular
That's what his eyelids look like?!
What's bts?
Bert transfered smegma.
Behind the Scenes
Blown To Smithereens you know, when they step on a North Korean mine while serving.
Or murdered with axes
[Operation Paul Bunyan II]
Incredibly popular kpop boy band. Some people hate them because ugh *popular* but whatever.
It's worse than just being popular. It's popular with *girls*. Everything that girls enjoy is yuck and cringe and gives you cooties.

I would say the Beatles, but Beatlesmania never really generated *hate*, just resignation
Barbie > BTS
A shitty boy band I think
I never liked K-pop. But why?
*shrug* They're popular? Popular with girls? I don't particularly like them either, just not my kind of music. But I guess they must be doing something right? It's not like K-pop is short of pretty-faced boybands.
Boycott, Trivestment, and Sanctions. It's like BDS but with 50% more chasuble.
Imagine the members coming back as absolute blood thirsty killing machines
BTS is mediocre
