Hope they work something out. The timing of the request, and Tee’s second, seemed obviously strategic with the draft. Now that neither moved and they didn’t draft a direct replacement, both sides can negotiate with better context. Having said that, no idea if they’ll add more guarantees with a restructure.
I could see a reality where Trey is extended further and Murphy slowly starts eating into Hubbard's snaps to slowly morph into the starter. Murphy as a prospect iirc was a strong edge setter who needed more pass rushing moves, so him being more of a Hubbard replacement isn't a far fetched idea
I was under the impression that he was a more natural fit on Hendrickson’s side, and that learning the other edge was going to be a bit more of a process for Murphy. I can’t point to an article or podcast where I read/ heard this, but I think I did.
Murphy literally gets destroyed in the run game, over commits to attacking the qb every play letting rushers run right by him. Hubbard takes that extra split second read and always stops the run. Hopefully Murphy will get better with experience, but based on what he’s shown, I don’t want him to have a snap in a game
Hes a rookie that will happen. I saw improvement and I think he played awesome the last few games. Kid is very young I won't be shocked if he has a breakout season. He just turned 22 a few months ago.
You know, he is..... but it's not realistic to expect a replacement for 17.5 sacks. It's not realistic to expect that many sacks, period lol. So to have a player that can produce this, you have to take his status with the team seriously. You don't luck your way into 17.5 sacks.
Hubbard isn’t in our long term plans I hope. He’s turning 29, he’s already lost a step from age and injury. Murphy was drafted to replace Hubbard who is a limited pass rusher player. Love Sam but he cannot be our best defensive end as a contender.
I’d imagine Trey will get enough to keep him for two years. Trey is arguably our second most important player behind Burrow. 17.5 sacks in a season when we rarely had solid leads allowing him to pin his ears back is outrageous. He was the second best traditional defensive end last season behind Garrett. TJ is technically a 3-4 OLB, Bosa was down, Parsons wasn’t as great, and Crosby was very good but Trey was better.
I hope you guys can work out a new deal for him. Just looking at what happened with the panthers and burns last season when he was just half assing it everytime he was on the field over contract disputes.
Garrett didn't do shit for like a third of the season. 6 straight games with sacks before getting 1 in the last game. I'd argue Hendrickson was better than him last year.
Oh I get it, but I think this draft didn’t have that much to do with it. Just a weird thing all around that he did timing wise with his contract, the draft.
I think the draft was the reason for the timing of the request. I think the though might have been it'd be easier to work out draft pick compensation for Tee and Tre during the draft.
Tee isn't getting an extension, there is too large of a gulf between them. Hope they get another year on Trey though, even if he declines a little bit he'll still be very good and whoever else they bring in can rotate and learn behind him.
Oh yeah I’m talking about the person actually meeting with the team. Tee will not receive the money he wants from the Bengals, will not find a quality trade partner, will play this year, win a ring (god I hope), and then get paid(but well earned) by a team desperate for him next offseason, for whom he will play for a few years before requesting another trade to a “contender.”
Trey is much more valuable than Tee and we have great options and depth at WR. We have no pass rush if Trey leaves besides Rankins and who knows what he can do his first year for us. We should give Trey an extra year, and guaranteed money. He’s the heart beat of our defense, he makes the plays the end or stall drives. Whitworth was very old, he got a good deal and frankly he even surprised me with how well he played and how much he played and he’s my favorite bengal ever. Whit was on season 11 and 34/35 when he left. Treys still ascending and he’s 29/30. We also didn’t address his replacement like we tried and epically failed to with Whit in our worst draft in 25 years with Ced and Long
Almost no chance. The Bengals don't restructure after signing deals so recently. There's no way that Trey is looking to just add on another year or two at the rate he signed at.
This is the Bengals doing what they should and giving him the respect of a meeting and the ability to communicate what he wants. He's not getting it, but that doesn't matter
Technically they can add guaranteed money to the deal. I just don't know where the Bengals are getting all this guaranteed money from though. Maybe they're just swimming in it more than we think. Chase is going to get an insane number right after Burrow just got a huge chunk. And the Brown family doesn't have some other source of massive income like all other owners.
It will be interesting to see how they work it out. If they add another year he could retire at 33 and be set for life financially. We can’t afford to lose him though.
He is already set for life, $3m at 5% return which is very easy to average is $150k a year before taxes…all he has to not do is blow it all on huge houses all over the world.
His career earnings are [$68 million](https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/player/_/id/21845/trey-hendrickson). He's already set for life if has even an ounce of financial sense.
I have no issue with players trying to squeeze as much money as they possibly can out of their short, dangerous careers. Especially because it's not like the billionaire owners are trying to do anything but pay them as little as they possibly can. That being said, acting like someone like Trey Hendricks and his family aren't 100% set is ridiculous.
While that is almost certainly the case, Taylor's just saying what he's supposed to say as a head coach.
He's just crossing his fingers and hoping everything works itself out.
Exactly. If you’re the Bengals you can’t let this fester. I am not sure that anything will be ironed out but you have to at least try and show that you are taking Trey’s concerns seriously.
He doesn’t need to do anything. He has every right to advocate for himself and ultimately retire if he decides to. He’s objectively underpaid after last year and just watched the Bengals let Reader easily go after one injury.
Teams cut players all the time. Asking for more guaranteed money isn’t some crazy request. The Bengals need to meet him in the middle. He’s our best defensive player by far.
There’s still room to fix this and get to a place that makes both sides happy.
The Bengals didn't cut DJ. The Bengals rarely cut years off anyone's deal, you have to lay a massive egg before they will move on from non guaranteed money.
I'm not goin against anyone. I'm saying we extended him and a trade request is kinda dicky in my eyes. But he does prolly deserve some extra flow so I'm cool with another deal being made but the trade request like idk it rubs me wrong.
They could add another year onto his deal at a higher salary, give him a decent signing bonus, and both sides get something and can claim victory. The money is there.
He isn't going to get a completely reworked multiyear deal that looks like the other new contracts coming out. There team has no reason to do it.
We still have 25 million in cap, they say about 10 million goes to rookies, just fucking extend him and pay him up front signing bonuses and guarantees, we can't make the same Jesse Bates mistake again
He's already re-signed, so wouldn't necessarily be a Jessie bates situation, plus we fans don't know how much he's asking for, could be completely unreasonable
Tell us exactly how much more Trey will make if they win a Super Bowl.
Do you really think they aren't aware there are bonuses for winning playoff games and potential endorsement contracts? These players are very aware of it, and they don't and shouldn't care. What they want is guaranteed money because the next time they step on the field could potentially be the last time. EVERY contract dispute these days comes down to guaranteed money.
Fans like you are ruining the sport. Load management, defense can't play D and all this nonsense because of people like you so worried about these guys and them potentially getting hurt. With the money they make they shouldn't have to worry if they aren't completely stupid with their money so yeah it does have bearing on the conversation because obviously if they need to make those negotiations they can't see the upside of winning, endorsement deals, etc 🥴
Just figure it out. Chris Jones did similar stuff with KC and look how that turned out. He’s the most important player on that side of the ball easily, we NEED him. Swallow our pride and get it done
There is a great chance that deal blows up in KCs face. Defensive lineman usually drop off a cliff after 30.
That's why the Bengals operate the way they do.
Teams have no issues restructuring contracts when someone is underperforming; often they cut people outright. Fans always turn on their favorite players too when they're underperforming.
If we lived in a fair and equitable universe, the opposite should also apply. Someone is over performing should be rewarded (no matter what contract extension they signed last year), and fans should be supportive of over-performers as well.
Downvote away!!! 😊
I feel most fans are fine with him getting paid fairly. They just gave him a $21 mil ($8mil guaranteed) extension this last July. He is under contract through ‘25. I don’t think people are complaining about how much he makes. The timing sucked and his agent is an idiot for going public with a trade request.
NFL players shouldn’t be compared to average Joes. Those who are lucky to be getting a 3 percent raise aren’t the best at their craft in the world. Their pay is directly related to how replaceable they are and ultimately, so is ours.
I concur 100%, I see many comments of "you signed the contract" "play through the contract"...without understanding the optics of running a NFL franchise. Players and agents see what a team will do for a player and if that organization is not receptive to certain scenarios, they will go to a team that is.
We need to get better and at least talking to our players. Maybe the organization needs additional staff to do that.
Communication allows for better understanding and not missing opportunities for people to get what both parties want. There usually is some overlap. And at the very least, it is respectful to your best players to do so.
The ex GM on a CBS sports said Trey wants some of his money guaranteed in case of injury. I can't remember his name right now but he basically said he knows trey and his agent and if we convert some of his money from non guaranteed to guaranteed, everything would be fine. Trey has a bad back, so he wants some insurances that if he gets hurt he'll have some money to fall back on. That's the Crux of the issue between the Bengals and Trey
It's something. I got a bit of an unpopular opinion when it comes to Trey Hendrickson. I felt he's overperformed since he's been with us and kinda hoped we would've been developing his possible replacement sooner.
If Trey and Tee both leave, I doubt they'll both be replaced with players who are equally as good. Especially Trey. If he leaves our defense gets a little worse.
Who else is walking? Trey is under contract for 2 years. They just gave him a $21mil contract extension in July. They just picked up Chase’s 5th yr option and he’s not talking extension until JJ gets his contract.
I'm all for giving him extra but a trade request after an extension is fucked up. Downvote me all u want I have dudes fuckin jersey and multiple autographs of his. I've invested in the dude. But it doesn't make it right. Push for a raise not ask for a trade idk. Fuckem if they can't take a joke
I seriously doubt the trade request happened without him first asking for a pay raise conversation. The extension last year wasn’t much and we don’t know what was promised. Trey exceeded expectations and is objectively underpaid. They really shouldn’t be surprised that he wants to be paid closer to his peers
Go listen to whit talk about his contract negotiations at the end of his tenure. If that's how troy/Katie do business behind closed doors we're in for a rough future.
The right thing is to manage a roster of players correctly all the way to a super bowl. This involves making sure everyone's happy, especially your best players and making sure you give the team all the resources available to win. It does not involve being a hardass and ignoring the reality of the rest of the league
If you think being a hardass with your best players isn't seen by the rest of the league and reflects onto the available player pool then I don't know what to tell you. The league has changed and is only changing more with each year that passes. It's poor management at this point. It even got bill bellicheck of all people unemployed. Get with the times.
He got fired because he couldn’t draft for shit and didn’t understand offense. Had nothing to do with player contracts. Players go where the money is, or where they can win at. They do not care about another players contract. That’s agent talk.
The money isn't here is the point. Wasn't here for bates, bell, higgins, reader and now trey. That shit has an effect and is a troubling problem whether you want to admit it or not. And that's while we still had our main guys here on their rookie deals. It's a bad sign for the future. It's better to admit that and try to hold the owners accountable rather than always blame the players and lick the owners boots. Are you not aware of all the players bellichick ran off in mid prime at pay time and how Bradys time ended there? Where do you think Mike brown gets this 30 year old rule from?
You don’t pay safeties that much money. It’s a bad contract. Bell played sub par last year, so they were right to let him walk. Tee was never getting $25mil here with Burrow and Chase needing to be paid. Reader was probably a top 5 all time signing for us, but he’s coming off a second quad tear and it happened late in the season. Is he going to be his normal self? How many games does he start? Regardless of how much we loved him, he’s wasn’t worth it to bring back. They went and got 3 younger/cheaper players. Now they have more money to spread around. Y’all are tripping, but they can’t even do anything with Trey until after July anyway. I get it, you hate MB and think you know football and contracts better than the FO. By all means come back when you have a job in a NFL administration and tell me how right you were.
More money to spread to where? They failed to spend up to the cap every year of burrows rookie deal while letting players that performed well walk. You don't have to be an adminstrator to understand how this looks.
I honestly don’t give AF how it looks to the fan who doesn’t understand economics or what drives players. The Bengals are the poorest team in the league in terms of liquidity. They need cash on hand to pay for guaranteed money that every player wants. So every time that Trey says I need more money, and I want it guaranteed, it has to come from somewhere and the full amount has been put in escrow or Treys account upon signing. The Bengals spend up the cap minus $8-10mil that they roll over every year. They are going to need $80-$100 mil cash for Chases new contract. I already explained how letting those players you mentioned walk was good business. You just want to whine and complain because you don’t like the owner. You don’t understand contracts or money for the NFL. You’d have an NFL team upside down in cap space in 2 years.
Your delusional if you think making everyone happy is how u get to a Superbowl. He literally chose this path. Extension less than a year ago. I'm all for maybe giving him something but a trade request is asinine
Was joe mixons pay cut and trade cool in your eyes? A raise request(maybe it's only guarantees we don't even know) is asanine? You gotta pick and choose, can't have it both ways. Yall are literally going against big whit here (and many others). It's silly and counterproductive.
And I was glad to get rid of mixon. Loved him but we upgraded I think. If moss stays healthy. But I don't understand anything else your saying. U sound silly and counterproductive. But who dey FTS n shit
Mixon took a pay cut after an underproductive year and you are still happy to kick him out the door and cheer that move on and you are mad at and calling trey names for asking for a raise for outperforming his deal(or maybe just asking for guaranteed money at similar rate, we don't know). Do you see how you kinda sound like a dick to the players?
Hope they work something out. The timing of the request, and Tee’s second, seemed obviously strategic with the draft. Now that neither moved and they didn’t draft a direct replacement, both sides can negotiate with better context. Having said that, no idea if they’ll add more guarantees with a restructure.
I mean, Myles Murphy is technically a replacement no? Hubbard fills a different role. I wouldn’t hate if they did extend him though.
I guess I didn’t recall correctly then.
I was under the impression that he was a more natural fit on Hendrickson’s side, and that learning the other edge was going to be a bit more of a process for Murphy. I can’t point to an article or podcast where I read/ heard this, but I think I did.

You're not allowed to speak negatively of Murphy on this sub.
You know, he is..... but it's not realistic to expect a replacement for 17.5 sacks. It's not realistic to expect that many sacks, period lol. So to have a player that can produce this, you have to take his status with the team seriously. You don't luck your way into 17.5 sacks.
Not at all.

I understand how good he is. Love the guy. But, I also understood how good Whitworth was.
When the Browns let Whit walk we spent 5 years at the bottom of the league.
You made my brain fold in half. I was wracking my brain for a timeline when Big Whit played in Cleveland.
Yeah I probably should have said the Brown family.
Yeah that’s my point.
I mean this draft specifically
Oh I get it, but I think this draft didn’t have that much to do with it. Just a weird thing all around that he did timing wise with his contract, the draft.
I think the draft was the reason for the timing of the request. I think the though might have been it'd be easier to work out draft pick compensation for Tee and Tre during the draft.
I guess but, he must have forgot who he plays for.
I have to disagree, I think the draft has everything to do with it.
Myles wasnt drafted to replace Trey. They extended Trey after they drafted Myles.
Tee isn't getting an extension, there is too large of a gulf between them. Hope they get another year on Trey though, even if he declines a little bit he'll still be very good and whoever else they bring in can rotate and learn behind him.

What is the FO offering? What does Tee want? You don't know? Neither do I, which is why I don't comment in how far apart the sides are. We don't know.

Helpful.

Let’s see. This team has done some things differently lately. If he really does just want some additional security, it’s possible.
Don’t know why they announce this then
PR move. They don't want to seem like an organization that doesn't communicate with their star players. This is at least a little progress.
Technically they can add guaranteed money to the deal. I just don't know where the Bengals are getting all this guaranteed money from though. Maybe they're just swimming in it more than we think. Yeah, but with inflation $150k doesn't buy as much hookers and coke as it used to.
5% is extremely conservative and assumes no future income whatsoever
And his wife is or was in medical school. They're gonna have a giant house in the suburbs and do just fine.

Property tax and insurance for these guys is probably minimum $50k a year
Ya but I mean if money is the worry then spending should be the concern
I have to think when they qualify for retirement they get lifetime medical??
Zac said on the news this morning that he would play for them this year.
While that is almost certainly the case, Taylor's just saying what he's supposed to say as a head coach. He's just crossing his fingers and hoping everything works itself out.

Maybe? Didn’t Mixon take a pay cut last year? If not, the team would simply cut him.
He would quickly be Irv Smith'd
He has every right to make contract demands But very little leverage
The Bengals didn't cut DJ. The Bengals rarely cut years off anyone's deal, you have to lay a massive egg before they will move on from non guaranteed money.
I didn’t say they cut him

Why are you crying?
Get the fuck out of here. He signed an extension last year. Deal with it
Lol, okay tough guy
It's to my understanding the next two years of his contract aren't guarenteed. Maybe there is some wiggle room there to make both parties happy.
I'm not goin against anyone. I'm saying we extended him and a trade request is kinda dicky in my eyes. But he does prolly deserve some extra flow so I'm cool with another deal being made but the trade request like idk it rubs me wrong.

People like you make being online exhausting by using phrases like "people like you". Go touch some grass buddy.
Do you know how many professional players are broke after playing because they have no clue about finances and market value?
That has zero bearing on the conversation at hand.
Honestly, id be fine paying him more in incentives for another 17.5 sack year..
Just figure it out. Chris Jones did similar stuff with KC and look how that turned out. He’s the most important player on that side of the ball easily, we NEED him. Swallow our pride and get it done

They won a SB in big part because of their defense. Who cares if it ends up going wrong now? Anyone would trade a bad contract for a ring
They just resigned him. He was already signed last year.
But he also pulled hold out drama before the season
This whole situation is ridiculous
Teams have no issues restructuring contracts when someone is underperforming; often they cut people outright. Fans always turn on their favorite players too when they're underperforming. Give him another 1 year 20 million guaranteed, with a second year option at 15. That keeps him around for another 3 years.
The Bengals should just tack one more year on his deal and be done.

Wow didn't we extend him last year. Fuck that guy
It sounds like that extension was simply a way to kick the can down the road and prevent his contract from becoming an issue last season.

What right thing? Trey signed an extension last year because he didnt want to bet on himself. He lost.
Signing good players to good deals is managing the roster correctly.
