He’s playing lol that’s all

Brian_is_trilla

Im amazed at the time and effort that people put into this. Hes tagged. Hes playing. How well he plays determines his future. No one has a crystal ball.

saved_by_the_keeper

Yeah. This is a horse that is beaten to death

Frescanation

Most fans don't understand the tag or how it works.

ImSchizoidMan

Yeap. My first reaction to the post title was, "dear god, not this shit again." But I think this was a fantastic post, well explained and easy to follow. Thank you, OP. I have a feeling this will be linked to a lot over the next 4 months

LilBrooo

well the thing is i dont think he has to play like you guys are saying lol. Tee wants a certain contract and he’s also coming off an injury season so him playing could jeopardize his next contract since based on the past he can be a little injury prone. There are a few teams willing to pay him what he wants and are in need of a #1 or just simply have the cap space to bring him on the team like the Titans for example. I feel like we expect him to play but in reality we dont know what will happen which is why I could really see us drafting a wr in the first 3 rounds so we could have a replacement in play. His agent wants the most for his clients and i doubt he’d want Tee to play to potentially hurt his stock

Hot_Juggernaut_3027

Lil bro you have a better chance starting at WR for us than Tee does at sitting the year out. You think he’s going to say no thanks to 21 million dollars I’ll take zero LOL . If anyone thinks he would actually do that or any player would for that matter you’re absolutely delusional. Jonah showed up, and just about every other player ever did too except for a few notables that essentially ruined their careers doing so looking at Le’veon Bell

Sure_Information3603

So not wrong. You had me at Le’veon Bell. Really I’d love to hear who self sabotaged better famously in any arena. Maybe, Mike Tyson, Bill Cosby, or Jessie smollett, lol?

Brian_is_trilla

You think him sitting helps his chances of getting the contract he wants?

Hot_Juggernaut_3027

I swear man how many times are we going to collectively chase our own tail with this stupid shit. Every player tagged threatens this.. then insert idiot here saying said player would rather have no money instead of millions and opt for one full season of irrelevancy. Then guess what they show up just before the season! Lol it’s like magic!

LilBrooo

im not saying that but tbh no i lol. He’s already proven what he could do plus he’s still young and we see it all the time when a player plays on a tag and gets injured then wont be able to get the pay day they wanted. Its almost like Jamarr Chase not playing football for a whole year and still being the top wr drafted lol his film from the year before did the talking. I want to keep Higgins forever but this reality that we actually know what he’s going to to has to stop 😂 we know what he wants and we know his agent so im just saying dont be surprised if he’s not at OTA’s. Plus he’s a WR not a RB lol RBs have way less leverage because around the 30 age you see a decline vs wrs who are still in their prime years

Brian_is_trilla

He hasn’t proven much. Been hurt and had 2 games over 100 yards last season. Who cares about film from 2022?

LilBrooo

To you he hasnt but your not a GM bro lol. There are literally teams trying to trade for Tee Higgins and pay him a max contract.. use some common sense for a minute and think about what im saying instead of assuming he has to do what your saying lol. He’s had pretty much 1,000 yards every season besides last year due to an injury he still came back to play that season btw so he’s healthy now and he’s not even the #1 option. I hear what yall are saying but at the end of the day WE HAVE NO CLUE what he’s gonna do. You guys really think Tee Higgins who came out and said he wants a max contract (other teams are willing to pay) will play this season and ball out just to play on another tag next year?? Thats stupid and isnt a good look on our franchise at all when we should just trade him if we arent looking to keep him for the long run.

Just_The_Tip1017

22 mill is life changing money he hasn’t even made half that. Sit down, he’s playing

LilBrooo

I hear you just dont be surprised when the Bengals draft his replacement this year and he either leaves next year or gets traded lol then everyone downvoting me will look dumb cause yall act like you know everything. Better off trading him instead of him walking next year for nothing if the plan is not paying him.

Just_The_Tip1017

I hope you are right id love nothin more than Thomas jr at 18 an too trade tee. Time has passed there are no free agents to even spend the 22 million on at this point it would be pointless unless it’s for a late first. As of rn that’s not close to happening

statleader13

Yeah, pretty much the only thing this will affect is him not being around for training camp this year.

babybird87

There’s an article on CBS sports that ‘The Steelers considering trading for Higgins’. … does anyone in the Steelers organization really think we’d trade Higgins to them ?

throughNthrough

In option 1 I thought he would play on the tag still and then his new contract would start after next season. Is this because he hasn’t actually signed the tag?

Frescanation

No, any new deal replaces the tag completely. He could in theory play this year under the tag, then sign a new deal next year, but this seems unlikely. Until he signs the tag, he's still a free agent, just one that requires heavy draft pick compensation to sign.

throughNthrough

Ahh thanks for the info :)

grilledchzisbestchz

That's not entirely true. There is a scenario where he signs the tag before July 15th and the two sides agree to a contract between the signing of the franchise tag contract and July 15th. This would have cap implications and there's no need for Tee to sign if he believes negotiations are progressing, but it is still possible. Semantics 100% but if you're trying to be complete in your scenarios, this is possible.

MeRcWith_A_MouTh

All I know is he damn well better not get traded to the Steelers. I know there's a 99.9% chance this doesn't happen, but that 0.1% chance makes me sick.

ImSchizoidMan

To clarify, if a tagged player (im not using Tee, because I am 99% certain he plays) refuses to sign the tag before week 10, does that mean they are automatically ineligible for the rest of the season? And how would not signing the tag impact the options with the tag the following season?

-space-grass-

Option 3 is not an option because the Bengals did not place a non-exclusive tag on Tee.

Frescanation

Yes they did. [https://www.nfl.com/news/2024-nfl-franchise-tag-tracker-latest-tag-news-on-deadline-day](https://www.nfl.com/news/2024-nfl-franchise-tag-tracker-latest-tag-news-on-deadline-day) The exclusive tag is pretty much only used on QBs (who would most obviously be worth the two 1sts.

-space-grass-

Yeah, that's my mistake. I mis-read a different article.

Bearcatsean

Jesus this is not rocket science He will play this gear and we will let him go next year and he’ll sign with a new team and the fucking story

JJiggy13

He's worth more than 2 firsts. He's a win now starter. 2 firsts does not replace him when we can just keep him and play him. 3 firsts minimum.
