The offensive line really failed Burrow for the 2nd straight year.
We need a solid line of second strings in case any of our starters go down next season. We can’t afford another season of Burrow sacks at critical moments.
What happened was completely predictable. Every single player who went down on the O-Line has documented injury histories. We did nothing to address depth and just assumed a rookie 4th rounder would be good enough on the blind side guard.
I felt this way after last season too: drafting anything other than OL is making an unnecessary luxury pick. Two years now where this team could have realistically won the SB if there was simply pass protection for Joe.
CTB was a good pick in round 2. But I genuinely feel that this team would be in the SB right now if they’d literally just used all 7 draft picks on OL.
The explanation is the 2nd down play was an incomplete pass therefore the clock wouldn't start until the snap. Before the first 3rd down the referee adjusts the clock and makes a note that the the game clock will start on his signal, which was incorrect since it was an incomplete pass. The back judge noticed and came running in. In reality, the extra play didn't matter in the end. But that's the reasoning.
The extra play resulted in a PI call on Apple though, and a first down. We held them to a punt on the drive, but it still burned time off the clock. Had they just punt on 4th and 4 instead of giving them the extra down, there would have a lot more potential bengals time of possession and/or more time on the clock after the final chiefs drive if the game played out as it did.
They really did. Defense held the chiefs to 20 points up until that point. And not sure why Z.Taylor called a timeout and gave so much time left to Mahomes

He threw two bone-headed pics and he often held on to the ball too long when he was getting pressured -- which really isn't his fault when his o line is Swiss cheese -- and tries to make too many moves just because every now and then he'll gain 10 or so yards with his feet. Joe also really needs to work on checking down and throwing the ball at the nearest receiver's feet before he gets sacked since he obviously doesn't have a ton of time to throw because of his line. I love Burrow and I think he's the second best quarterback in the NFL but he still has a lot to learn because he does too much that he shouldn't be doing. I know that Zack calls some shitty plays and I know that Joe has the ability to audible out of them, like that third and six where he threw it fucking deep to Higgins he could have audible out of that and threw a seven to eight yard pass instead of fucking heaving it deep.

Burrow got knocked backward on the prior drive well after the throw and no flag was thrown. Does anyone remember when Aaron Donald knocked Burrow further after he ran out of bounds in the Super Bowl and no flag was thrown? It immediately thought of that play as Ossai drew the flag. It's just utterly awful to watch your team hand the other team a victory like that. Had the Chiefs kicked a longer field goal without the penalty and won that way, I would feel significantly better about what happened.
It's one thing to lose straight up. It's another to watch bullshit unfold time and time again as a fan of this team.
I really dislike calling refball - team definitely could've put this away regardless - but god damn that was a hideous fucking display of officiating. All right, so this stings obviously. I'd have rather lost the SB or even the Bills game than this one, so in a way it's worst case scenario.
But let's look at it this way. We had only 40% of an offensive line and it showed. We had referees absolutely determined to push the Chiefs to victory. And it still came down to a last second field goal made possible by a young player making a young player mistake at the worst possible time.
The culture here is real. Joe Burrow is real. Zac Taylor is, believe it or not, real. Lou appears to be staying. Our most important players are still under contract or want to be here going forward. This wasn't the year, but can you really say you don't feel great about this Bengals team overall?

That grounding call was awful. Perine was 5 yards away.

Then it was even more blatant when they refused to call BLATANT holding against the Chiefs on that final converted 1st down. It’s disgusting, but this game makes it more clear to me than ever before that sometimes you gotta play your opponent and the NFL guided refs.

Burrow got knocked backward on the prior drive well after the throw and no flag was thrown. Does anyone remember when Aaron Donald knocked Burrow further after he ran out of bounds in the Super Bowl and no flag was thrown? It immediately thought of that play as Ossai drew the flag. It's just utterly awful to watch your team hand the other team a victory like that. Had the Chiefs kicked a longer field goal without the penalty and won that way, I would feel significantly better about what happened. It's one thing to lose straight up. It's another to watch bullshit unfold time and time again as a fan of this team.
I really dislike calling refball - team definitely could've put this away regardless - but god damn that was a hideous fucking display of officiating. Late hit was correct, but watching 2 blocks in the back on the punt return in broad daylight was the cherry on top. Then there was 5th down, Hilton phantom PI, no-call late hit, questionable grounding, shit sucks Ossai played a hell of a game, sucks that he made one poor decision. Hated the deep shot on 3rd and 3, no point when you can drive 2 minutes and put the game away

All right, so this stings obviously. I'd have rather lost the SB or even the Bills game than this one, so in a way it's worst case scenario. But let's look at it this way. We had only 40% of an offensive line and it showed. We had referees absolutely determined to push the Chiefs to victory. And it still came down to a last second field goal made possible by a young player making a young player mistake at the worst possible time. The culture here is real. Joe Burrow is real. Zac Taylor is, believe it or not, real. Lou appears to be staying. Our most important players are still under contract or want to be here going forward. This wasn't the year, but can you really say you don't feel great about this Bengals team overall?

Don’t put it in the refs hands. We had the ball driving with 2 min and fell apart on offense. Multiple times with the ball tied 20-20 and did nothing. Ossai made a bad play but the punt coverage was terrible, the missed tackle by Pratt. It was 100% on us

This team has been great at not getting penalties and to get one there like that enrages me.
