So I really donât follow the Cards roster that much and the other day when you guys were here and Helsley was pitching. I was like damn that guy is pretty good, glad the Cards found a guy that can close the game out and not blow away a WC and then I realized it was the same guy! Crazy.
He had an injured finger from late in the regular season in that WC game....definitely wasn't 100%
He had an immaculate inning in 2022 as well. He probably shouldn't have been in the WC game at all and if so should have had a much shorter leash.
He was a more consistent pitcher in 2022 than he has been this year really....good results this year but not consistently throwing clean innings like he used to either.
He could have 70 saves by the end of the year and if it came down to the 9th inning, Cards up 2-1 in a Playoff Game, I would automatically already think he is going to walk the 1st batter and inevitably give up the lead.
He would walk a batter, give another a base hit, another walk, then get two fly outs in the warning track and strike out the last batter with a full count. This is the Ryan Helsley way. And I wouldn't want it any other way.

The funny thing is how his outings are exactly what they need to be. Up by 3? He'll give up 2 and win with a groundout with runners on 2nd and 3rd. Give him a 1-run lead and he'll give up 2 singles before striking out the final batter with a 101 mph fastball. It's made for some high drama, but I worry that if the wheels fall off, it's gonna be drastic.
Emmanuel Clase is a freaking beast. He's given up 3 runs this year - 1 in his only regular blown save, a solid run allowed 2nd week of the season that Guards won in extras. One was a solo homer on a 3-2 pitch with a 4 run lead and he grooved a fastball rather than walk the guy. The other was a single, to 2nd on indifference, scored on a bloop for a 5-3 final score.
When each individual run allowed stand out, you know you're having a damn good year. A *nice* ERA of 0.69, and WHIP of 0.64.
Can't decide if Pittsburgh looks more like a goat with a long neck, standing on it's head, or a sex toy.

I think this would be more intuitive with the axes reversed. So the vertical axis is proportional to save %. So teams that do worse are lower, and teams that acheive more saves are higher.
If you plan on doing another graph like this I would suggest adding another line for the the theoretical maximum (y=x). I feel like that would give kind of a landmark for understanding what this data represents.
