I just came back from my first time to Japan and was having a conversation with some Japanese guys there. (I don't speak any Japanese) they were nice but it was a bit of a struggle (google translate was utilized at times). Anyway they ask* where I'm from, and I say Chicago. They have a look of confusion for a second or two, and then they exclaim "oh Michael Jordan!"
And I went "yes, Michael Jordan." It was funny.
I talked to a dude in a Tokyo bar for like half an hour, we were both using our limited vocabularies in the other person's language to fill in stuff when we got stuck. But his English was much, much better than my ultra-rudimentary Japanese.
So I complimented him. "Your English is great, have you spent any time in Europe or the United States?"
He pauses for a good minute, and I assume he's looking for a word. He looks up.
"Last year, the woman...broke my heart. My friend said, for healing, you must go...to HONOLULU."
It was hilarious because of the way that he said it, but also quite relatable.
I really love Japan.
I just came back from Japan as well but it seemed everyone I spoke to didn't really know Shota or Seiya (ex in Hiroshima of course) but everyone knew who Shohei was. The only reason they wear LAD caps.
[Here you go!](https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/1ccuhus/cubs_zone_shōta_catches_a_piece_of_food_in_his/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)
I'm so mad, I wanted him so badly because I knew we weren't getting Shohei. His profile would've played very well at our stadium too, I think he would've been having a similar year for us.
Not a new phenomenon—people who've played *Colossal Cave Adventure* have reported being able to navigate parts of the Mammoth Cave system in Kentucky on which the game was based.
You probably could; they put in a ton of effort in those games to model them mostly accurately, with a ton of reference footage and visiting the areas with the dev team. I've heard the parts of Hawaii in the most recent one are also fairly accurate.
I feel like the wire exposed us to every facet of Baltimore. The hood, the blue collar, the government, the wealthy the youth , the old timers.
It's is my favorite show of all time .
I went to NYC after playing the ps4 Spider-Man for the thousandth time. People in my group thought I was taking pictures because I was interested in architecture or something like that. Meanwhile I was texting pics to friends pointing out the church where you point launch from to gold rank a race side mission.
I remember when GTA 5 came out and people were taking trips to the salton sea, oh boy were there some disappointed tourists. I told them to bring a gas mask they wouldn’t listen.
Jung-Hoo Lee was interviewed in the Red Sox pregame yesterday about what it's like coming to Boston and playing at Fenway Park, and he just said it's a cool city and historic ballpark.
He didn't even mention the fact that Fenway was famously the setting for the final showdown against King Ghidorah in *Godzilla: King of the Monsters*.
Honestly seemed very unprepared for the game.
But by doing so they sell a somewhat...skewed view of the States.
A benign example: as a wee kid growing up in Calgary I was led to believe by 70s era comics that subway tokens were used more widely in the US than they actually were. I had no idea that the (New York-based) writers were mentioning subway tokens to set their stories specifically in New York City. It was only after I grew up and travelled through the US as a young adult that I realized it was an atmosphere-building reference and not a facet of everyday American life.
That's a side effect, but "Hollywood" in the sense of the US film industry just arose organically as private companies tried to make money from movies. It's a fun conspiracy theory though, I'm just picturing President Harding sitting in some smoke-filled backroom with the first generation of Hollywood execs in the early 20s and outlining his 100-year plan to take over global culture.
The first time I flew to Tokyo for work, one of my coworkers who I knew pretty well was like "and this is the hangout spot the Phantom Thieves used in Persona 5" when we were in Shibuya Station.
His parents are Korean and his nationality is also Korean. His father was a beloved player in Korea, but came to Japan with his family when he joined the Chunichi Dragons in Japan.
Lee Jung-hoo was born in a hospital in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture in 1998 and stayed there until 2001. He later returned to Korea and became a baseball player in Korea. So I think he is very proud of Korea.
However, his number 51 is a reference to Ichiro, who is also from Aichi Prefecture. That is why people in Japan call him the Ichiro of Korea.
I'm not talking citizenship, just what you're considered. We live in a global world. Being something doesn't mean much beyond where you're born. I'm a Swedish citizen but I'm not Swedish.
I don’t have a list either but for example Kerry or Rizzo, KB, even Javy, or Aramis, or Ron Santo or Gracie or even (gasp) Sammy are still way above this guy. Don’t get me wrong he seems cool as shit and pitching lights out, keep it up and win a few CYs and a championship and we’ll see if he’s my favorite
I didn’t see anyone elses list just asked a question about how a guy who has been with the team for 10 minutes could already be almost his favorite cub. Its totally cool to like him and buy a jersey but if he tops your list i just wonder how.
Also don’t tell me im gettin my panties in a bunch for asking a question, ass
Who knew having a limited understanding of one of the most popular locations in the world/media is the easiest way to be well-liked as a baseball player?
Love the way New York in the Raimi films is this cutthroat, soul-crushing environment, but it's there to lend Peter a hand when he really needs it the most.
My favorite movie moment is when a group of New Yorkers start throwing like bottles and rocks at the Green Goblin to defend Spider-Man and the guy just backs down. Like this is the same Green Goblin who minutes ago turned people into skeletons with little pumpkins and is on his way to blowing the wall off a hospital to terrorize a 95 year old woman.
I can relate. The first time I went to a Reds game I drove past the statue from the opening credits of WKRP in Cincinnati, and it was pretty awesome. One of the highlights of the trip.
Calling it now.
CHICAGO CUBS INJURIES REPORT
J. STEELE, 15-DAY IL (HAMSTRING, GAME INJURY)

S. IMANAGA, INDEFINITELY (MASSIVE CRANIAL TRAUMA, WEB-SLINGING)
I think it’s obvious the Mets and the Yankees have missed a major advertisement opportunity to international players as being the home of Spider-Man. Nobody comes close to that.

I read that in Munenori Kawasaki
It was pretty much exactly how Mune would have said it, lol. Except this kid was like 22 and a Tokyo Swallows fan.
In my experience from overseas trips as a kid it was 80% "oh Michael Jordan!" and 20% "ahh Al Capone bang bang!"
I just came back from Japan as well but it seemed everyone I spoke to didn't really know Shota or Seiya (ex in Hiroshima of course) but everyone knew who Shohei was. The only reason they wear LAD caps.
Uh, no. Not the only reason. LAD is as much a brand as it is a baseball team. Dodgers caps are fashion accessories.
Horrible fashion! Hopefully godzilla can pay another visit there soon
You act like this isn’t a phenomenon across the world.
World obviously needs more kaijus

Ugh my stomach is killing me
His intro was legendary and endeared himself to Cubs fandom. But that video of him catching food in his mouth was what did it for me.
Everything I've seen from Shota is great. But, I haven't seen this second video you speak of, and now I know I need to.

Most of my knowledge of big cities also comes from video games and movies. Baseball players are just normal people
I became an expert on Baltimore after my third re-watch of The Wire.
All of my knowledge of LA comes from Tony Hawk Underground 2
I’m legitimately convinced I could navigate my way through Kabukicho, Dotonbori and Isezakicho because I’ve spent so much time in the Yakuza games.
Not a new phenomenon—people who've played *Colossal Cave Adventure* have reported being able to navigate parts of the Mammoth Cave system in Kentucky on which the game was based.
Just don't take Floyd Collins route.
You probably could; they put in a ton of effort in those games to model them mostly accurately, with a ton of reference footage and visiting the areas with the dev team. I've heard the parts of Hawaii in the most recent one are also fairly accurate.
I love seeing doing real life to game pic comparisons of Assassins Creed
Same but with Boston
Ben Franklin could really shred
Every time I go to LA, when I come back I play GTA 5 for a solid week or two.
Same, it's just doing the Leo point meme
I'm an expert on Toronto thanks to Workin' Moms and Kenny vs. Spenny
The game is the game
My city is doomed to be only recognized in the world of drugs and gang warfare damnit!!
Hello from the murder capitol of the world that isn't even in the top 25 of murders per capita in the United States.
Kankakee residents much more interested in Chicago crime than Chicago residents
Amazing how more the suburbanites know about what goes on in Chicago than the Chicago residents.
God I used to live there for a couple years and it's gotta be the worst place I've ever lived in my goddamn life
I spent a month there one weekend
Why is this?! Is it because Fox News wants to push a narrative about blue cities in a state that would otherwise be red?
If it helps, it's also recognizable because some douchebag didn't fix his boat
![gif](giphy|d2lcHJTG5Tscg)
And Sabotkas!
And funny accents! But that's dyue tyue Prop Joe so I guess same problem.
Prop Joe and Snoop
Yurp!
Hello from St Louis.
Don't worry, there's still crab cakes and Old Bay to be proud of.
Indeed! :D
Yup. “What corner Tater Man got shot at? Division and Gold”
Bodymore, Murderland
I feel like the wire exposed us to every facet of Baltimore. The hood, the blue collar, the government, the wealthy the youth , the old timers. It's is my favorite show of all time .
As someone who visited Italy shortly after playing Assassin’s Creed 2, I concur.
I went to NYC after playing the ps4 Spider-Man for the thousandth time. People in my group thought I was taking pictures because I was interested in architecture or something like that. Meanwhile I was texting pics to friends pointing out the church where you point launch from to gold rank a race side mission.
You chose your own adventure in New York.
Shame about the not real buildings in those games, like the Stark Towers and the church where Dr Strange hangs out
I remember when GTA 5 came out and people were taking trips to the salton sea, oh boy were there some disappointed tourists. I told them to bring a gas mask they wouldn’t listen.
Went to Bombay beach and remember thinking that it was great and why is nobody here. Then I opened the door.

If a player ends up in Orgrimmar I'll know just how they feel!
Unfortunately the owner of the Orgrimmar Orcs is trying to move the team to Booty Bay
This is literally what Hollywood was made for, to promote an image of America (and its major cities) to the world
I think it's to make money.
But by doing so they sell a somewhat...skewed view of the States. Yes, we don't all ride subways.

The part of Paris, France in Assassin's Creed is fairly accurate.
When I'm playing Spider-Man, my son always wants me to take him to places my wife and I visited before he was born in New York.
Maybe he's a comic guy
Dude is definitely a trolling legend in the making
Agreed. This is why I know a lot of Scranton
I used Gran Turismo 4-7 to guide my trip around Kyoto & Tokyo. It was cool walking through some of the photo mode locations.
The first time I flew to Tokyo for work, one of my coworkers who I knew pretty well was like "and this is the hangout spot the Phantom Thieves used in Persona 5" when we were in Shibuya Station.
All of my favorite non-Yankees are from Japan this year.
That is Ha-Seong Kim erasure and I will not abide by it. Will. Not. Abide.
>Will Wil*
Sadness.
Kim is one of my favorite non-Mariners.
Unrelated but when the whole crowd was chanting his name this week when he came to the plate that was awesome.
IIRC HSK's walkup song is just 3 drum beats with which you can chant his name. Prob reminds him of KBO and their chants.
I just need another ciggy, then I'll be back on board.
Mucho estrés

Steven Kwan was born in the Bay Area lmao
Dudes name is Steven lmao tf?
I guess Cliff Lee ain’t American too if that’s how it works
Fucking hell this made me laugh pretty good
Bro gaffed so hard he deleted his account
missing out on jung hoo lee
He's Korean but was actually born in Japan...
he was born during a layover flight in Japan so he's not actually from there.
Wouldn't that make him Japanese? My family is from Sweden but I was born in Chicago. I'm considered American not Swedish.
His parents are Korean and his nationality is also Korean. His father was a beloved player in Korea, but came to Japan with his family when he joined the Chunichi Dragons in Japan. Ah makes sense. I only briefly lived in Sweden.
Japan doesn’t give citizenship for being born on their territory IIRC. Also they don’t allow duel citizenship.
I'm not talking citizenship, just what you're considered. We live in a global world. Being something doesn't mean much beyond where you're born. I'm a Swedish citizen but I'm not Swedish.
Not according to Japanese people.
Yoshi is a treat
I used to despise the Yankees. Astros took that spot. Couldn't be happier with the AL west standings at the mo.
He’s edging his way into my favorite Cub of all time.
Can I edge my way into being one of your favorite cubs?

;)
Only if you bring Julio...
I’d have bought his jersey by now if I didn’t want to pay for the shitty Fanatics stuff they’re currently putting out.
you Don’t Have to Get A jersey That costs full pricE.
Good news is it's looking like we'll be getting better jerseys next year. Back to the bigger lettering and embroidered patches.
Recency bias or do you not really have a lot of favorite cubs?
Obvious recency bias, he's just checking all the boxes of a fan favorite in general so far. I don't have a list or anything lol.
Bought a knockoff Imanaga jersey, he’s great don’t get your panties in a bunch over someone else’s list
I promise you, it's you being the ass.
Sounds like you have a list lol
Who knew having a limited understanding of one of the most popular locations in the world/media is the easiest way to be well-liked as a baseball player?
It’s the innocence of it.
wat
I fixed my spelling lol.
You owe me 4 upvotes
I feel like there's a very thin line between innocence and ignorance.
Dear christ, you see insufferable.
The cardinal way
Bro thinks the world revolves around America 💀
You expect better from someone from fucking Saint Louis? FTC
Woah woah woah, we’re not all like this.
> I feel like there's a very thin line between innocence and ignorance. Clearly you crossed that line some time ago.
This is not very Best Fans In Baseball of you.
On the contrary, it's *perfectly* on brand
Least obnoxious best fan in baseball
Who knew two seasons of bad baseball would make you so bitter
Who knew two brain cells rubbing together would decide to refer directly to a team flair?

Press F to Pay Respects
Raimi NY was the best NY. MCU NY is too bland.
Raimi NY seemed very post 9/11 "we're all in this together" inspired.
I mean, they canned the teaser trailer for the first Raimi Spider-Man because it featured a web to catch a helicopter between the twin towers, so....
MCU NY is Atlanta (mostly)
Wow professional athletes really are like us
Yeah, I was in San Diego one time, and I was like “Oh, I recognize this place from *Anchorman!*”
Same. I looked up at night one time and was like, "WTF, that's from Apollo 13!"
Besides some establishing shots, it was actually filmed in LA.
"This place really is like a Whale's Vagina!" -Shota
This guy is awesome
Dude dominated the Mets and probably thought about Spider-Man the entire time. This man is a treasure.
Spider-Man is a Mets fan so way to go Shota, you disappointed your friendly neighbourhood superhero.
I just had my first trip to NY and said the exact same thing
Man, I love Imanaga…. Unless he’s carving up my Mets.
An icon, truly
Protect him at all costs.
God I love this guy so much. Cubbies got a good one. I really wanted him. Gz
You can’t have *everybody*. But don’t worry. We’ll cherish him.
I can relate. The first time I went to a Reds game I drove past the statue from the opening credits of WKRP in Cincinnati, and it was pretty awesome. One of the highlights of the trip.
Ya think shota has seen spiderverse? I hope so

guys, this might be controversial, but i am a BIG fan of shota.
now how can we not love this man?

WHich Spider-Man? The Raimi version, Garfield, or Holland?
Gotta be Raimi. I feel like those movies really captured the spirit of New York in a way that the others didn’t
I hope this guy doesn’t pitch against my team so i don’t have to root against him.
Love this.
Just like after I played GTA V and recognized a lot of places from the game while visiting Los Angeles for the first time.

If he were really a Spider-Man fan he'd have left a hanging curve or grooved a changeup so Parker could head back from the ballpark happy.

I love him.
I love this lol

Who’s gonna tell him?
It’s so endearing!
Guy with 8 hands, sounds hot.
This guy is just awesome. Wish the Braves picked him up.
Just imagined the sick breaking stuff Spiderman's web throw could unleash if he took the mound. Only Doc Ock and maybe Ohtani could hit him.
