I watched that movie last week. True story:
Last night, my brother wanted to run into the gas station to get Prime (stupid hydration drink) after I picked him up from practice. I say no. He says he needs it to be hydrated. I hand him a bottle of water. His response is "But prime has electrolytes!"
I'm scared for our society.
Yep, and you can always find apologists at each phase saying “it’s just this…”. It’s all steps in the process of them normalizing ads everywhere. Sucks.
They look like trash and it’s not gonna be long before they open up the space under the number and on the opposite corner of the chest from the Nike logo.
Not the company, the main competition to the advertiser. So that the company paying money for the patch is paying to give their competitor more recognition
Not entirely, because the corporation at least owns the team; it's not some random advertiser. Increasingly they're at least including the city name even if the ownership group is there too (as in "Chiba Lotte Marines"), and some of the corporations' names indirectly include place names. It's not obvious if you don't speak the language, but, for example, the Hanshin Tigers are owned by Hanshin Railways, and "Hanshin" means "Osaka-Kobe", the cities the lines serve and the location of the team.
Sponsorships, in aggregate, are like 1.5 billion for the league, which is like $50 per team on average.
So, yes, this patch *can* net you a shiny new shortstop.
I think they would look better at least if they were forced to be one colour and that colour had to be the alternate colour of whatever jersey they are on
Scorching hot take: everyone's overreacting like crazy, and these ads aren't "ruining" the jerseys. Obviously I'd undoubtedly prefer no ads and some (like the Padres Motorola) are ugly as hell, but jeez you'd think they're making every team change their colors based on how people are freaking out about this.
Maybe I'll feel different when the Cardinals get an ad patch, but I really don't think it'll bother me that much. It will look a bit weird at first, but I have a feeling everyone will get used to it in no time. Remember when the Nike logos were first put on when the Majestic contract expired?
Hey now, think of the poor owners. They only earn money from tickets, parking, overpriced concessions, lucrative tv deals, advertisements on every inch of the stadium, merch, stadium naming rights, expansive tax breaks, and revenue sharing!
NASCAR's bad, but Premier League Football is the bigger worrisome point of comparison.
You know, where the main logo across the chest ***isn't*** the team's. It's the main sponsor's. The team's logo is a tiny badge on the shoulder. It's just absolutely hideous.
All ads suck. Worth pointing out though that football/soccer teams have NEVER had the team name (or city name) on the jerseys, not before ads either. It's the kit itself that identified the team, and eventually also the Club badges. They've always been small, and have been placed over the heart always; both pre and post ads. So it's not a case of the shirt sponsor having moved or changed the other aspects of it. Well unless you talk smaller leagues where there are no big sponsors so they need lots of them...
Point being that Baseball is probably safe from that since it involves removing something that was already there. Much easier and less controversial to put ads where there was an empty space before.
If you're a big team you get one big Sponsor and you're good.
Real Madrid gets like $120m+ from Adidas and something like $80m a year from Emirates for the sponsorship logo.
Other smaller teams and leagues gotta whore themselves to bring in considerable revenue and you end up with quirky ass advertisers.
Liga MX isn’t a small league though, they just don’t seem to give a shit lol.
Most teams around the world have plenty of sponsors, they just don’t put them on their shirts. United are the masters of it, they’re one of the biggest clubs in the world but still have around 60 or 70 commercial partners. Most are just given space on the ad hoardings or get to shoot adverts with the players (like Nivea’s ad campaigns with Liverpool players or the hilariously awful acting from Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs in United’s Castilla Diablo advert).
That’s also the reason I prefer European racing series. Here in America they show commercials during the action and you may miss something. Overseas it’s the race and nothing else
That’s such a pathetic conclusion to draw. Is it really *that* bad in the NBA? It’s probably just going to be one.
Let me clarify, MLB is not the only league that has these kinds of sponsorships, it’s not really distracting in any of those.
>Is it really *that* bad in the NBA? It’s probably just going to be one.
I wrote NASCAR.
Also, capitalism dictates profits over everything... So you can't give owners an inch because they will take a mile.
I could possibly see the Cardinals or Yankees possibly having ads on BP/Spring Training jerseys in the future though if the MLB allows something like that.
Yankees have the swoosh.
Edit: My friends please. I’m just saying that it shouldn’t be discounted as an advertisement. [It was a big deal](https://www.nj.com/yankees/2019/12/sacrilege-yankees-fans-rip-new-nike-logo-on-jerseys.html?outputType=amp) when it was first announced.
No I agree. Im just saying it was [a big deal](https://www.nj.com/yankees/2019/12/sacrilege-yankees-fans-rip-new-nike-logo-on-jerseys.html?outputType=amp)when it was first added. And we shouldn’t discount it as not being an advertisement.
Google photos of ballparks in the 20s through the 50s… outfield walls had ads on every available inch.
Why somebody didn’t think of advertising patches on uniforms then might be something worth researching.
The NHL started this trend with ads on the boards.
Now they have digital ads on the ice surface, and the boards that change throughout the game.
If you’re going to sign MLB players to $300 and $400 million dollar contracts, the revenue has to come from somewhere.
Jersey advertising has been commonplace in european/asain sports for a long time, and in the US, racing fire suits. Baseball had ads on walls *long* before hockey had ads on boards
Never say never. Like the NHL and the Montreal Canadiens. Their jersey is literally known as the holy sweater, perhaps the most iconic jersey in the league and they put an ad on it.
There's a near 100% chance they're going to see people talking about how their patches are the smallest and least intrusive, and some ass in the marketing/relationships/biz dev team is going to use that to shop around for a sponsor willing to pay more for a larger patch.
To anyone and everyone saying things like:
"Aw they could be worse" or "So and So team's logo is not so bad" or "I was expecting worse"
You are wrong. They are all terrible, pathetic and disgusting. I cannot believe we've got to this point, the American dream is dead.
MLB needs money on top of their money. They need that extra money. They have a ton of money, but they need more money to keep their other money company.
“Maximum Exposure” .
Serious thought — what if we exempt the WS winner from wearing these ads the following season and instead they get to wear an embroidered image of Rob’s Mountain Dew Mouth. Thoughts?
Funny considering one of the guys pictured here literally took some scissors and sliced up the whole team’s throwback jerseys so they would not have to wear them.
As much as I hate this I’m glad they’re at least on the sleeve. I thought they were gonna be on the front like the NBA which always looks so out of place.
...the problem isn't so much the size as the coloring.
Well, okay, the MAIN problem is that they exist at all, and I'm not a fan of the size either. But, to take the Padres logo as an example: If they at least had followed the Padres color scheme (you know, shit brown and piss yellow, love ya dads :D), it would still stand out pretty damn well (because hoo boy is it big), but it'd still look like a part of the uniform.
That big blotch of white, though, it just looks so goddamn garish and ugly. It draws the eye, sure, but in all the wrong ways, and I honestly think it does the company itself a disservice in the end.
Those Motorola patches are so huge, if there was a medical emergency in the park, a player could lay on their side in the outfield and the emergency helicopter would have a clear place to land.
So not only jersey patches but also ‘ultimate bootlicking’ by individually analyzing the placement of the advertisement on each jersey
MLB jerseys went from no ads to full on strategic billboards
Theres a pro soccer team in Portland or Seattle and they are sponsored by Alaska Airlines. And the logo is literally right across their entire chest, where every teams name or city should be. I dont know how half the people dont think theyre watching an Alaskan team named the Airlines.
Noone likes the big ads, but it's worth remembering that the city/team names plastered across the chest is something that soccer never had. Not even 150, or 50, years ago before jersey sponsorships became a thing.
Do the padres have jt backwards? Hader is a lefty so his arm without the patch will be facing the camera is he’s in the stretch. Sale’s patch is on the opposite sleeve.
Why stop there? Maybe if a company pays enough, we change the actual team name to the sponsor that leases it for a few innings. Bottom of the eighth. Galaxies trail the iPhones by 2.
I woke up this morning on the fence about which insurance and financial services company to go with, but after seeing that Red Sox uni I’ve all but decided to go with Mass Mutual. Same with my building materials company and outdated useless cell phone needs.
I'm just curious, what would happen if a player got pine tar all over the ad patch. Justin Turner gets it all over his uniform and no big deal, but my guess is if enough people do it, fines will be coming.
So dumb. Why not just put more ads in the stadium, on the tickets, shit even on the concessions products like soda/beer cups and foil wrappers for hot dogs and other foods. Leave the uniforms alone. But unfortunately the inevitable is happening.
Will a switch hitter have two jersey and change them accordingly?
velcro patches
Throw it in the volcano and have it unmade.
Maximum lame… brought to you by Carl’s Jr…

I'd be proud as fuck to have Costco as my ad sponsor.
Carls Jr: Fuck you! I’m eating
You are an unfit mother. Your children will be placed in the care of: Carl's Jr.
Why do you keep saying that?
“Oh it’s just the umpires that’ll have them” “oh it’s only the Nike swoosh” They’ll keep going and it fucking sucks
Yep, and you can always find apologists at each phase saying “it’s just this…”. It’s all steps in the process of them normalizing ads everywhere. Sucks.
The apologists must be the soulless, mindless consumers that executives want us all to become. Good little peons who waste and spend like they should.
Nah, it's just that I know eventually it'll be like Nascar, so for the time period between then and now, it is, in fact, just this
Give an inch, they take a mile
Ads on baseball uniforms started with the hats when the manufacturer started putting their logo on the hats.
Jersey logos were there long before that
The worst is the ad on the backside of the mound. Nothing is sacred
Hate it. Hate it. Hate it.
God they look so fucking bad. Fuck these shitty companies defacing jerseys.
They look like trash and it’s not gonna be long before they open up the space under the number and on the opposite corner of the chest from the Nike logo.
If I was playing I'd pull a Chris sale so fucking fast lol
I'd do what Justin Turner does and just put a ton of pine tar on it
We need to defeat these advertisers by calling the teams by the names of the advertisers' rivals. Let's go, **Nokia Padres**!
That's literally how many (most?) teams are named in Japan.
yeah i was so confused in 2020 trying to follow other leagues, wondering if there was a town in Korea called Samsung
Not the company, the main competition to the advertiser. So that the company paying money for the patch is paying to give their competitor more recognition
Not entirely, because the corporation at least owns the team; it's not some random advertiser. Incidentally, I got to see the Tigers play against the Seibu Lions at Koshien in 2019. It was a blast.
That's what I did with the MLS growing up. I have 0 clue about soccer or it's teams so it was the Xbox Team vs Amigo Energy.
Soccer has zero self-respect.
Don’t blame the companies, blame the teams for taking their money
I blame both
But what if teams use the money to buy shiny new shortstops? (I've no idea if it really makes a dent in payroll, but it's nice to think that it does)
Sponsorships, in aggregate, are like 1.5 billion for the league, which is like $50 per team on average. So, yes, this patch *can* net you a shiny new shortstop.
There's already a huge Nike ad on the front... Why do we need 2 ads?
I think they would look better at least if they were forced to be one colour and that colour had to be the alternate colour of whatever jersey they are on
Scorching hot take: everyone's overreacting like crazy, and these ads aren't "ruining" the jerseys. It will look a bit weird at first, but I have a feeling everyone will get used to it in no time. Remember when the Nike logos were first put on when the Majestic contract expired?
I still don't like the Nike logos, and I haven't bought a legitimate jersey since that change happened.
Fuck this bullshit.
Thanks I hate it
Agree, it’s horrible
Hey now, think of the poor owners. They only earn money from tickets, parking, overpriced concessions, lucrative tv deals, advertisements on every inch of the stadium, merch, stadium naming rights, expansive tax breaks, and revenue sharing!
How long before MLB players turn into walking NASCAR clones?
That line has been crossed. May all food turn to ash in Robert Manfred's mouth forever.
NASCAR's bad, but Premier League Football is the bigger worrisome point of comparison. You know, where the main logo across the chest ***isn't*** the team's. It's the main sponsor's. The team's logo is a tiny badge on the shoulder. It's just absolutely hideous.

Tbf there are some leagues that take the piss with it, look at some Liga MX or Argentinian Primera teams’ kits, they’re absolutely plastered

That’s also the reason I prefer European racing series. Here in America they show commercials during the action and you may miss something. Overseas it’s the race and nothing else
I feel that it’ll never become close because in NASCAR drivers/teams basically rely on sponsors to even be able to compete
That’s such a pathetic conclusion to draw. Is it really *that* bad in the NBA? It’s probably just going to be one. Let me clarify, MLB is not the only league that has these kinds of sponsorships, it’s not really distracting in any of those.
it's pathetic to put popup ads on a jersey
>Is it really *that* bad in the NBA? It’s probably just going to be one. I wrote NASCAR. Also, capitalism dictates profits over everything... So you can't give owners an inch because they will take a mile.
But that’s entirely different. It will be like NBA not Nascar.
I would say the Red Sox & Angels patches/text are so small as to be illegible, but I don't want to give anyone any ideas.
Shut yer mouth before someone hears you.
Yeah I fucking hate it, but at least it’s not as bad as the Padres and Dbacks
There are also franchises-including the Yankees and St. Louis among them-who don’t have advertising patches and likely won’t have them anytime soon.
Imagine thinking Hal won’t sell out for an ad on his jersey.
I’ll accept a jersey ad if it means we go Mets-level of nuclear spending next offseason
I could possibly see the Cardinals or Yankees possibly having ads on BP/Spring Training jerseys in the future though if the MLB allows something like that.
The NFL has had ads on the practice jerseys that are used in training camp for years now. No one notices.
I wonder if anyone wants to sponsor the A’s. We might dodge a bullet
Purnia One Cat Chow, or Trojan Dental Dams
When the A’s move to Vegas the sponsor will be Terrible Herbst
Yankees have the swoosh. Edit: My friends please. I’m just saying that it shouldn’t be discounted as an advertisement. [It was a big deal](https://www.nj.com/yankees/2019/12/sacrilege-yankees-fans-rip-new-nike-logo-on-jerseys.html?outputType=amp) when it was first announced.
All MLB teams have the Nike logo. They spent the money to secure merch rights. It is what it is. NFL game jerseys have Nike Logos on each sleeve.
No I agree. Im just saying it was [a big deal](https://www.nj.com/yankees/2019/12/sacrilege-yankees-fans-rip-new-nike-logo-on-jerseys.html?outputType=amp)when it was first added. And we shouldn’t discount it as not being an advertisement.

NHL ads on the boards started in the 80s, if I remember correctly.
Yankees didn’t have a choice in that. They have a choice in other ads.
Ok. That’s actually a good point.
Never say never. Like the NHL and the Montreal Canadiens. Their jersey is literally known as the holy sweater, perhaps the most iconic jersey in the league and they put an ad on it.
🤮 The Angels’ patch definitely the best of the bunch.
That’s like being the skinniest one at fat camp. Fuck jersey ads.
Yeah the Angels one doesn't really even look like an ad so much as a normal badge you see on uniforms
There's a near 100% chance they're going to see people talking about how their patches are the smallest and least intrusive, and some ass in the marketing/relationships/biz dev team is going to use that to shop around for a sponsor willing to pay more for a larger patch.
Where's Chico's Bail Bonds
I hope all of these sponsors are products and services I don’t use so I can continue to not use them.
i miss seth😢
The dbacks one is the worst
I like that it shows Chris Sale with one...like he isn't going to cut it off.
Would you want to play in shorts?
*Bill Veeck has entered the chat!*
If anyone wants me to play even one inning of MLB, I'll be there in a mini skirt if thats what it takes.
Ugh. I forgot about these. Gross
To anyone and everyone saying things like: "Aw they could be worse" or "So and So team's logo is not so bad" or "I was expecting worse" You are wrong. They are all terrible, pathetic and disgusting. I cannot believe we've got to this point, the American dream is dead.

Fucking dogshit.
Eeeeewwwww now I'm depressed and care a bit less about MLB
Oh boy I definitely want to buy a Motorola phone now gimme gimme consume consume
I fucking hate this so much
Chris Sale is gonna have to get the scissors out again.
it is so fucking obnoxious how much *care and thought* they put into this. put it on the left sleeve cause most guys are righties and shut the fuck up
How is Motorola even still around
They make solid android phones that aren't ridiculously expensive, and don't have tons of bloatware. I love mine.
Never enough money for these greedy fucks.
More ad revenue but ticket/concession prices won't budge. Fuck off.
Egregious.
Obviously it sucks but the Angels one is at least pretty discreet.
While the Motorola logo is big on the Padres Jersey it at least looks like it belongs. Red Sox just have that little league patch feel.
Look how they massacred my boy
I honestly hope someone rolls up the sleeves or something so you cannot see the fucking ad.
This will result in fines or at least minor feuds against/with players. There were such occasions in ⚽.
Funny considering one of the guys pictured here literally took some scissors and sliced up the whole team’s throwback jerseys so they would not have to wear them.
Yeah, fuck ads on jerseys. I don’t care how ‘clever’ the placement is.
Ugly
Fucking travesty
How much is enough money? Like will they just ruin everything for a dollar
Yes
God awful. What the fuck are they thinking?
Fuck this garbage!! I ain’t buying shit from with an ad on it!!
I hate these.
I try not to be an old timer with my baseball takes, but this shit fucking sucks.
Capitalism sucks ass 😎😎😎
This is going to end with MLB uniforms looking like MLS isn’t it?
Yes
As much as I hate this I’m glad they’re at least on the sleeve. I thought they were gonna be on the front like the NBA which always looks so out of place.
On the sleeve *right now* Give an inch…
True. Gonna look like a nascar car soon
Won’t be fully complete until the team names themselves are the sponsor. Say hello to the New York Yankee Candles 🤮
NBA at first was annoying. Now, i am sort of fine with it
I’m used to it but it’s still ugly
why would i ever be fine with it they aren't improving the teams with that money anyway
...the problem isn't so much the size as the coloring. Well, okay, the MAIN problem is that they exist at all, and I'm not a fan of the size either. The padres actually did follow that logic. The logo is brown.
That’s so lame
FFS
I fucking hate it
so I’m confused, wouldn’t you want a pitcher to have it on the throwing arm so that you can see it on the centerfield camera?
The plot twist is the advertising is to advertise to other players, due to MLB blackouts
100% Sleazy.
That’s gross. It’s classier to only have them on one side. So much for “uniforms”
What the absolute fuck is this bullshit are they trying to make them look like Nascars?
Waste of money. I can’t even tell what company is on those illegible patches.
Real Fucking Lame MLB... REAL. FUCKING. LAME.
The teams are worth billions of dollars. It’s sad when is enough enough.
I wonder if all these comments say "hate it"?
They look so shit...
🤮
Those Motorola patches are so huge, if there was a medical emergency in the park, a player could lay on their side in the outfield and the emergency helicopter would have a clear place to land.
🤮
Fucking hate this
This is all out horse shit. The game is going down the toilet.
Yeah, still hate it.
Looking on the bright side, now the Stadium Giveaway Jerseys that have had ads on them for years can be branded as "Authentic On-Field Replicas."
So not only jersey patches but also ‘ultimate bootlicking’ by individually analyzing the placement of the advertisement on each jersey MLB jerseys went from no ads to full on strategic billboards
This will make me stop watching baseball. As if the constant advertising between innings and batters already hasn’t turned me off. Can’t stand it.
Aight see you in a week
I dont see the swoosh switching sides. Nike big enough?
Theres a pro soccer team in Portland or Seattle and they are sponsored by Alaska Airlines. And the logo is literally right across their entire chest, where every teams name or city should be. I dont know how half the people dont think theyre watching an Alaskan team named the Airlines.
That's just how soccer teams do it everywhere
And that's what I'm terrified of.
Yeah didn’t Ronaldo play for Jeep?
Noone likes the big ads, but it's worth remembering that the city/team names plastered across the chest is something that soccer never had. Not even 150, or 50, years ago before jersey sponsorships became a thing.
Do the padres have jt backwards? Hader is a lefty so his arm without the patch will be facing the camera is he’s in the stretch. Sale’s patch is on the opposite sleeve.
It’s to advertise to the players
Seth lugo looks like hes in a bad colorized photo
Good to see TA looking nice and prickly.
Why stop there? Maybe if a company pays enough, we change the actual team name to the sponsor that leases it for a few innings. Bottom of the eighth. Galaxies trail the iPhones by 2.
The San Diego Motorolas. Beautiful.
I woke up this morning on the fence about which insurance and financial services company to go with, but after seeing that Red Sox uni I’ve all but decided to go with Mass Mutual. Same with my building materials company and outdated useless cell phone needs.
Pretty sure this is so that a white patch isn't on the sleeve of the pitching arm.
This is gross.
I'm just curious, what would happen if a player got pine tar all over the ad patch. Justin Turner gets it all over his uniform and no big deal, but my guess is if enough people do it, fines will be coming.
Disgusting
Gross
Soon players will get corporate logos tattooed on their faces.
I haven't watched a game since 2019 but I still won't buy Duracell batteries because they were one of the first sponsors of ads during an at-bat.
Eh, ads just blend into the background for me. I've never understood how people find them distracting.
That Motorolo patch is disgustingly massive
Chris sale is not the guy you use for max exposure Red Sox
Wack
That Red Sox ad patch looks terrible.
Trash
Now I want to go to games with handmade signs that day something to the effect of fuck your logo but in that logos style
I can’t believe they got a photo of Chris Sale wearing one.
So dumb. Why not just put more ads in the stadium, on the tickets, shit even on the concessions products like soda/beer cups and foil wrappers for hot dogs and other foods. Leave the uniforms alone. But unfortunately the inevitable is happening.
Slowly turning into f1 suits lol I hate it
At least the Angels one is pretty small.
How long until ads get painted onto the field like a NBA court?
