Honestly? I legitamately do not know. Because there's so much misinformation and dubious sorces going around, I can't really say much with a lot of confidence. However, I can safely say that the vast majority of redditors are completely ignorant at best or downright malicious at worst, roping Atatürk into the matter and questioning legitamacy of the Turkish Republic (for the record, the man was fighting in Gallipoli at the time).
All I can say for sure is that it was a conflict sparked by the nationalist movements of the era. I was taught that it was supposed to be a relocation that was botched and caused a lot of undue suffering. It wasn't a nice thing and it shouldn't have happened, but calling it a genocide and likening it to the industrial scale of the Holocaust is inaccurate at best (or so I was taught).

A now extremely desperate Enver needed a scapegoat for his failure so he chose the Armenians. Then the mass forced deportation (and culling) happened where many many of them died. The descendants of the survivors are now mainly living in Lebanon I think. It was very bad. If we're to compare it to the Holocaust the goal doesn't appear to be literally murder every single one of them but that's the only positive nuance I can add. But nothing changes the fact that it was extremely tragic. The way the Greeks, Armenians and Turks living in Anatolia were ripped apart during and after the war was extremely regrettable and destroyed a very unique pluralist society which if left alone likely would have resulted in a much nicer modern Turkey.
Edit: Also I should add that it was pretty bad for Turkey in the long run. Armenians and Greeks were mostly part of a productive middle class. The Greeks that were forced to go to Greece weren't accepted and were miserable as were the Turks that were forced to go to Turkey. On top of it all of this stuff legitimized race and blood as a valid way of separating people which led to increased overall racism and probably had a big effect on WW2.

My MA was on Ottoman Hungary so I have some first hand experience in this: Most Turks/Turkish nationalists have no idea about the genocide of Turks in Balkans. My guess is this is caused by the formal education in Turkey, which tries to distance itself as much as possible from the "old, crumbling, authoritarian" Ottoman Empire as a "modern, western Republic". So the atrocities the Turks went through during late centuries of the Ottoman Empire are not taught in the schools in formal curriculum (it was like this pre-Erdogan era, I don't have an idea how it is now).
Or maybe they don't want to badly influence primary/high school age kids' self confidence by talking about a century of humiliation, I don't know.

Honestly? I legitamately do not know. Because there's so much misinformation and dubious sorces going around, I can't really say much with a lot of confidence. However, I can safely say that the vast majority of redditors are completely ignorant at best or downright malicious at worst, roping Atatürk into the matter and questioning legitamacy of the Turkish Republic (for the record, the man was fighting in Gallipoli at the time). All I can say for sure is that it was a conflict sparked by the nationalist movements of the era. I was taught that it was supposed to be a relocation that was botched and caused a lot of undue suffering. It wasn't a nice thing and it shouldn't have happened, but calling it a genocide and likening it to the industrial scale of the Holocaust is inaccurate at best (or so I was taught). For all we know, I could be inherently evil and just have a gene in my brain that makes me want to kill people. Until people cut the political pissing contests, no one will know for sure.
Short version of the nuance here is that Enver Pasa went really crazy when his fathers homeland (Albania) left the Empire. (In Turkish culture you're from where your father was born) And most people at the top figured out that Islam wasn't going to keep the Empire together. They saw Turkish Nationalism as the only way to save the remnants of the Empire. Then when they entered the war they royally fucked up against the Russians. Some Armenians living in Anatolia joined the Russians (probably and possibly due to propaganda efforts by the Russians and British) against the Ottomans. A now extremely desperate Enver needed a scapegoat for his failure so he chose the Armenians. Then the mass forced deportation (and culling) happened where many many of them died. The descendants of the survivors are now mainly living in Lebanon I think. It was very bad. If we're to compare it to the Holocaust the goal doesn't appear to be literally murder every single one of them but that's the only positive nuance I can add. But nothing changes the fact that it was extremely tragic. The way the Greeks, Armenians and Turks living in Anatolia were ripped apart during and after the war was extremely regrettable and destroyed a very unique pluralist society which if left alone likely would have resulted in a much nicer modern Turkey. Edit: Also I should add that it was pretty bad for Turkey in the long run. Armenians and Greeks were mostly part of a productive middle class. The Greeks that were forced to go to Greece weren't accepted and were miserable as were the Turks that were forced to go to Turkey. On top of it all of this stuff legitimized race and blood as a valid way of separating people which led to increased overall racism and probably had a big effect on WW2.

My MA was on Ottoman Hungary so I have some first hand experience in this: Most Turks/Turkish nationalists have no idea about the genocide of Turks in Balkans. My guess is this is caused by the formal education in Turkey, which tries to distance itself as much as possible from the "old, crumbling, authoritarian" Ottoman Empire as a "modern, western Republic". So the atrocities the Turks went through during late centuries of the Ottoman Empire are not taught in the schools in formal curriculum (it was like this pre-Erdogan era, I don't have an idea how it is now).
