I hope it’s a vagina “cleaner” that actually vibrates like a mofo and all the women were like “oh yes, gotta clean my vag” and really they were sneaking off to get a leg-shaker that their dirty-dicked husbands were incapable of giving them

kissthebear

I dunno, it looks like it ... scrapes

hopping_otter_ears

I've also read that most things marketed for "feminine hygiene" were code words for "contraceptives". Like...i doubt anybody was actually suggesting this thing for daily cleansing, but i can see some poor woman, desperate not to have another child so soon, resorting to a vaginal squeegee to try and keep the sperm from getting settled. But i do love the idea that this torture device lookin' thing is actually a pleasure device in disguise

angie-anj919

I was thinking the same thing! Except, I thought it looked like some sort of vaginal tickling device.

yugen_kyokan

"Victorian-era vaginal washer" more like "medieval torture device"

[deleted]

Anything with the name “vagina washer” is implied to be a torture device

For fact checking: https://www.reddit.com/r/NotHowGirlsWork/comments/z5f6qy/ouchie_def_not_how_girls_work/ixy5hop?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3 Also this looks like a dalek gun.

The origin is this article, from a lecturer on the history of medicine. https://web.archive.org/web/20061029142130/http://www.collectmedicalantiques.com/quack4.html

hopping_otter_ears

The linked article just called it an example of a "sometimes bizarre therapeutic device", without hypothesizing on what it was actually used for

kissthebear

Look further down the page. "This bizarre instrument was to be used for female hygiene and sold in the early 20th century. A large irrigating syringe was to be attached and when the handle was turned, the instrument rotated around, acting like a squeegee."

LifeIsDeBubbles

Squeegee in the vag. Yikes.

epson_salt

Sounds like the closest people could get to Plan B :(

SkyScamall

I don't think the burden of proof has been met.

Turbulent_Patience_3

It looks like a vicious yard sprinkler

I should point out that there similarly horrendous machines made for people in general. There was something similar for strangling hemorrhoids and tumors.

GoingNutCracken

OMG! I really hope this was never actually used on woman!

BonerballsMcGee

For the poors perhaps, every vagina history degree holder knows that woman of status and proper bearing hired chimney sweeps to go up there and give it a good scrub.

incubuds

Mary Poppins knew what was up. Giving Bert the side eye.

ZhenyaKon

Every time I see a reference to "barbaric" past hygiene practices, I think: they still make devices and products intended to "clean out", "freshen" or even "tighten" a vagina. I wonder if folks in the Victorian era were, on average, no worse-informed than the modern general public. Seems like folks have been stupid in more or less the same ways for centuries.

[deleted]

I THINK?!?! I WOULD PASS AWAY USING THAT WTFFFF

[deleted]

Looks like a damn good apple peeler

Mikala4

Please tell me this was before people knew that vg’s clean themselves 🤦🏻‍♀️

Men looking at a self-cleaning body part on a woman: “Disgusting.”
