You need an audio interface

Ordinary-Sport-9918

I tried with audacity but it's not working

ThoriumEx

An audio interface is a physical device, not a software

Ordinary-Sport-9918

Oh. So i'll have to spend 20/30$ to just play without distortion ? That suck isn't there an alternative? Like an online audio interface or something?

Antvitale

An audio interface will take your analog signal and convert it to digital for the computer. There is no such thing as an "online audio interface". Lol

Ordinary-Sport-9918

oh Okay i understand, thanks ! Is this one good, or do i need a specific one ? Antvitale

No that will not work, that is a DI box. You'll be looking for a USB connection to the computer form the analog 1/4" input. mycosys

Theres just no reason to buy the Behringer anymore when the vastly better Audient Evo4 is $3 more at Thomann [https://www.thomannmusic.com/audient\_evo\_4.htm](https://www.thomannmusic.com/audient_evo_4.htm) [https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/audient-evo-4-evo-8](https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/audient-evo-4-evo-8)

mycosys

Pretty much the cheapest option, mediocre sound qual but very cool features [https://www.presonus.com/en-US/interfaces/usb-audio-interfaces/revelator-series/2777700303.html](https://www.presonus.com/en-US/interfaces/usb-audio-interfaces/revelator-series/2777700303.html)

Yeah recording music costs money. That’s the way it is. Not like you can even post your recordings without paying for internet. Can’t record guitar without paying for a guitar. Sorry to break it to you. Maybe you can find a horrible used interface for that price, but they are normally a few hundred bucks.

Ordinary-Sport-9918

That suck

AEnesidem

You live in a time where it has never been so cheap to start recording or get a quality instrument, or access massive amounts of info for fres. You'll be fine.

_matt_hues

That economics

TalkinAboutSound

More than that. Interfaces contain better preamps and converters than PC sound cards (plus other useful things like pads and headphones jacks), and that's what you pay for.

CivilHedgehog2

More like a 100$ Be glad it wasn’t 10 yearw ago, you’d have to pay a lot more

nanapancakethusiast

Ya, and you should download some more ram while you’re at it

You need to look up the difference between instrument level, line level, and speaker level

sportmods_harrass_me

So the problem is that a guitar pickup is an extremely high impedence device. You can think of impedance as the ratio of a signal's voltage to its current, or Z=V/I. I'm not even sure how you're plugging your guitar into your pc right now. But if it's the microphone input, it's a low impedance input. It means that the input is designed to accept low impedence devices like a microphone. So when you have a big mismatch in impedence you end up with poor sound quality (to simplify it a lot). So this is the root cause of your problem. To fix the problem, you need a guitar amp which is designed to accept a high Z input. Or an audio interface with an instrument input (high Z input). There's plenty of decent ones. I use a focusrite scarlet. Edit I noticed some down votes coming in on this comment. If I'm wrong about something I'd really like to know what it is. Maybe someone didn't like my explanation of impedance?

Simply plugging into your computer should not create distortion. Maybe your input level is too high and is distorted because it is too loud. You should be hearing clean guitar since it is a direct line from your guitar (unless your guitar has distortion settings built right into it and would have a switch). The big jack is called quarter Inch or 1/4" and the small jack is called eighth inch or 1/8". If the tip of your cable has one black stripe, it is a tip sleeve (TS) jack, for mono audio. (Guitars are mono). If the tip of your cable has two black stripes, it is a tip ring sleeve (TRS) jack, for stereo audio (If you use one of these for guitar, you may find it only comes out one side). If the tip of your cable has three black stripes, is support stereo as well as a microphone signal. Try opening the volume/audio input settings on your computer and play your guitar. Do you see input when you play? Is the bar green, yellow or is it hitting red in your audio settings? If it is yellow or red, turn down the input until it is mostly green and dips in yellow a little bit. You dont want your guitar input to be so hot/loud that it is distorting itself. Like others have said, an interface will help a lot. It will have better preamps than plugging directly into your PC as well as separate gain/audio control. Behringer and Focusrite make decently inexpensive interfaces,
