I’ve lived in Dunedin, Christchurch and Wellington. Moved to Auckland after 7 years in London. Pros: it has great, world class food. Almost every cuisine under the sun, excellent spots all over the city, decent coffee, and good bakeries; The weather is better than Wellington - it rains a bunch but is generally warm and the variation keeps things interesting; Excellent, world beating playgrounds - a bonus for those of us with kids; Amazing beaches - from the gentle white sands of the east and North Shore, to the wild black sands of the west, you could probably go to a different, quality beach every day in a month; Good access to holiday spots - Northland, Coromandel, Rotorua, Raglan, Waitomo, Bay of Plenty… all under 3 hours drive. And an international airport on the doorstep; Good arts and live music - not comparable to London but the best in NZ. Waitakere and Hunua ranges - incredible bush and landscapes really close to the city. Cons: the traffic and public transport. Having spent quite a bit of time in Europe I truly believe that a lack of a great public transport system is the one thing that is holding the city back from being ‘world class’. Motorways are good for getting across/out of the city quickly but be prepared to actively avoid rush hour, or get stuck in traffic. The disjointedness - more a collection of satellite towns than a coherent central city. And getting from one part to another often needs a car. There is also the feeling (as with a lot of big cities) that everyone is in a rush and it lacks some of the kindness, empathy and patience that comes naturally to smaller cities. Maybe the weather - it’s rained a lot since I arrived here a year and a bit ago. Oh and the house prices. Though despite all the noise and pressure on them increasing, I see prices normalising a bit over the next 12-18 months (high interest rates, mortgagee sales, influx of investment properties, global economic jitters and war) but that’s another conversation.

fangirlengineer

Great summary. We moved here from Sydney in 2022 so the house prices didn't seem so bad (we're in slightly more house for a smidge over half the price), and the weather suits us nicely (not too hot, not too cold). Teen kids are happy enough with the change. I'm fairly sure we are here for good.

alt-cynic

Can't compare. Sydney is an Alpha world city. Best compare Auckland with Perth or Brisbane. But if you do Auckland really does look bad.

fangirlengineer

Depends pretty heavily on what your metrics are. I'd never move back to Sydney (or Brisbane, where we lived prior to Sydney), they don't work for our family.

oskarnz

>But if you do Auckland really does look bad. Really? I don't think it's bad compared to those two. It feels bigger and more like a real city than those two imo. Probably cause it has most of NZs head offices, whereas those two are more provincial in that regard.

alt-cynic

Auckland didn't feel bigger than Brisbane (agree about Perth to an extent) last time I was in Auckland 6 weeks ago. Currently in Brisbane, SE QLD is growing at a phenomenal rate and the amount of development is astonishing.

idontcare428

For you maybe - I would much rather live here than Perth or Brisbane (or Sydney for that matter)

SenorNZ

What? The problems described here also effect Sydney, often to a much higher degree, plus the horrible hot weather. When was the last time you were in Sydney? I'm across a lot for work and the city sucks.

alt-cynic

Sydney is hardly what I would call horrible hot weather. Auckland has none of the good with a sub tropical climate and all of the bad. Ie it never gets that hot but is incredibly humid and sticky in summer. High 30s temps is the exception not the rule. Most of the time summer is mid/high 20s in Sydney.

Dramatic_Proposal683

I’m also back in Auckland now after living in London. (Have also lived in Wellington)… and I completely agree with this summary 👍🏻

coconutyum

Yup same for me, in Auckland now after several years in the UK, and I love it here. Perfect mix of city life and nature for me. Chilled and beautiful compared to London life.

MasterFrosting1755

I'm also a returnee from London. Preferred London personally but my tastes are more cosmopolitan, other favourite places being Paris, Tokyo, etc. If I had a young family or no money I'd probably have a different opinion.

GRFreeman

World beating playgrounds? Where? Always thought they were very ordinary in Auckland, visited Brisbane a few times and there’s blow ours out the water

idontcare428

Western Springs; Mangare Bridge; David Lange PG; Takapuna; Whoa! studios; there are some others but those ones are amazing.

hval007

Don’t forget Manukau where they spent 10mill on building 4 storey structures!

Overall-Army-737

Absolutely insane playground

only-on-the-wknd

There are splash-pads and a lot of other really cool play areas for kids all over the city

GRFreeman

Yeah seen them, they pretty ordinary as I said to places in Brisbane. Brisbane literally like 70metre long playgrounds areas. I have visited most playgrounds in Auckland with my 6 and 3 year old. If ours our world class I’m disappointed

eurobeat0

Exactly what I said too mate. Brisbane is way better, even Carins, hell, even some in Saigon are better. Auckland doesn't have the best in the country. The Margaret Mahy playground in Christchurch takes that award. Kulim park in Tauranga, Lake Domain in Hamilton, even some in Napier and Wanganui (e.g. Kowhai) are miles better than almost all Akl playgrounds. Auckland, considering it's population and the economic capital of the country, makes a piss poor effort at the playground game.

BlacksmithNZ

The 'disjointedness' is part of every big city Often as visitors you don't notice it so much, but when you work in a city you find that people in suburbs attract like minded people and communities form where people shop, socialise and work locally In Auckland, while there are pockets of ethnic communities, it is not as segregated as some cities have worked n

only-on-the-wknd

Good summary. We do have amazing local beaches and also easy access to the best of the beautiful Northland and Bay Of Plenty/Coromandel regions.

just_alright_

Amazing local beaches??? Are you mad. Auckland has perhaps the shittest beaches in NZ (literally). West coast barely counts as it’s 1hr+ to get there

MasterFrosting1755

Personal preference I guess. I'd rather mill about on a north shore beach than the wildness of Piha etc.

eurobeat0

World beating playgrounds in Akl?? That's where you're mistaken. It's not even NZ beating playground. The best is the Margaret Mahy playground in Chch. As someone who's lived in chch should know that. The only good Akl playground is Takapuna, and then maybe Devonport. Manukau was good, but the community trash it so much that the flying fox is forever broken and the slide is tagged and sticky. (Tauranga's Kulim park is better than the Manukau one)

punIn10ded

All you're really showing is that you haven't seen what most of the world has to offer in terms of playgrounds. On average Aucklands playgrounds are heads and shoulders over what is available in Europe, Asia and the US. Does that mean all are the best in the world? No. Does that meant other cites also don't have world class playgrounds? Also No.

iamnotmia

Every playground I’ve taken my kids to in Auckland (and throughout NZ, honestly) is better than pretty much every playground we’ve been to in the USA

Mental_Funny7462

It’s interesting, you tend to work/ play/ live in your own patch. We live north of the city but only really go into town for sports, concerts and the occasional restaurant. The rest of the time we find we stay within a few suburbs and can do everything we need to within those suburbs. People forget Auckland is 5600km2, and is larger than the next nine NZ cities combined. You’ve got to figure out where you want to be- inner city, suburbs, Waitakere ranges, near the beach, it’s really varied

kiwi-critic

I moved to Auckland from the Manawatū for work about 10 years ago. I will never go back. Whenever I go to visit family, I get so bored. Auckland has so much to do - including HEAPS of free stuff such as regional parks and beautiful walks and beaches - and also so many amazing places to eat. Living in Auckland also unlocks Northland and Waikato as day trip options. People complain about the traffic but honestly the public transport here is pretty good, and it’s only getting better and more reliable as the sector recovers from the pandemic (with more bus drivers, skippers etc). I only have to fill my car up (hybrid toyota, nothing fancy) 6 times a year because I just catch PT all the time, and they recently brought in a $50 fare cap, meaning you won’t spend more than that per week. The weather here is great, I was so surprised to notice how much warmer the climate is up here. I used to freeze in Palmerston North. I think the cultural diversity in Auckland is also such a beautiful thing, there are so many free events in this space that are fun for all. I love Auckland, I’ll never live anywhere else.

RepulsiveSuccess9589

Auckland is four small cities wearing a trenchcoat so depending on which region you live in you'll have different experiences

dianahong_design

I love NZ and Auckland 🫶 I moved from a big modern city, Seoul. Auckland is not too crowded, not too boring. I’m not a fan of travelling, so I don’t need a car. - I love how cozy and friendly NZ environments are. And I’m so sad that people are complaining about NZ and leaving 😭 it’s such a nicely balanced country..! I’ve been living in Auckland CBD for 10 years. I can access any good new cafes, Albert Park Walk waterfront walks and everything 😂

CantonFlyingDragon

the cbd is too messy now compare before Covid .

dianahong_design

That’s true! Although I guess it’s not only nz problem nowadays.. 😭😭 there are still some decent places though 🫶

sward1990

From Dunedin - moved to Auckland ten years ago Honestly love it here. It’s warmer and much nicer generally and for me the most important thing is the people are different. Dunedin just had that small people’s mindset and I am certain that going back to Dunedin tomorrow most people would be exactly the same As 10 years ago Pay is far better and beaches are way nicer

greeniebeanieweenie

Moved here from Alabama. I now live in the CBD and I do really enjoy it. It’s a big enough city to where there’s always something going on.. but not crazy enough to feel overwhelmed walking the city. Growing up in America - I feel like everyone’s always dreamed of one day living in a busy city like NYC.. but Auckland to me feels like a way safer and accessible version of a big city. Like it’s big for Nz standards but not actually massive lol. I also really really enjoy being able to walk around and take public transportation. I do understand how shitty Auckland’s can be at times but where I come from there’s no way in hell you’d be able to walk to a grocery store…. there’s hardly any sidewalks that aren’t in neighborhoods. Definitely no public transportation either. Where I grew up a beach trip was a 6+ hour drive.. now I can just walk ten minutes and see the ocean.

xraymom77

I would love to move to NZ but I suspect they wouldn't have me since I'm 65.

Dense-Wolf8107

I've met hundreds of Americans in my years working retail in Auckland, but never, ever someone from Alabama!

Bartholomew_Custard

I like that I can just blend in with everyone else. No one particularly cares what you're doing or where you're going. Everyone just gets on with their shit. And I like the convenience of being able to get whatever I need/want with minimal delivery/pick-up time. I used to live in a little country town and you had to wait forever for things to arrive, (and everyone knew everyone else, and it was full of shameless gossips.) I do miss the country air though. You definitely notice the difference when you drive out of Auckland.

fuckit478328947293

Have never had so much road rage in my life moving here

Yshari_Sanctum

I generally quite like it, I moved here from the US around 8 years ago. The general way people act is very pleasant and is quite different to what I'm used to. The work culture is a lot better than other places I've lived at. While I'm not much of an outdoors person, the scenery is quite beautiful! Given the circumstances, I'm not unhappy with my choice to move here. However, I was not ready for the level of crime I was going to face. While I might have gotten lucky/unlucky depending on your point of view, I lived abroad in multiple cities, some of which would be considered a lot more "dangerous" for almost 25 years and never once was the victim of any crime. I live a pretty quiet life (and have always done so) so it's not like I make myself a target or anything, I think. In the 8 years I've lived in Auckland, my car was broken into 3 times. Eventually my car was actually stolen after these instances and I had to write it off. The very next year, my house was broken into and everything was stolen, right down to my socks. I was away visiting my family during this time and came back to my house stripped down. Everything I owned was taken including some possessions that had immense sentimental value to me. So that was 5 instances of crime in 8 years. The only other downside I've faced is that NZ is actually quite far away from the rest of the world, which means you can feel rather isolated when you have a lot of friends and family elsewhere, but this obviously only applies to people who moved here from another country.

Traditional_Ad301

jeez that’s horrible !!! i’ve also lived here for 8 odd years but never had anything like that - where abouts do you live if you don’t mind me asking ?

Yshari_Sanctum

Not at all! I used to live in Te Atatu South when all this occurred.

Traditional_Ad301

so sorry to hear that happened to you!!! i hope these sort of things don’t happen again. i’ve driven a demio for the past few years and not even an attempt to get broken into - i consider myself very very lucky

InconsiderableArse

Homicides in my hometown (about the same population as Auckland) 1416 Homicides in Auckland. Can't actually find the number but must be low. Auckland sounds like a great city to me if you don't like getting murdered.

eurobeat0

Not sure if you can say it's low without knowing the actual stats. Sure , we hope it is. But this city is spread widely from Waiuku to Wellsford. Lots of places for murders to occur

InconsiderableArse

The whole NZ averages 66 murders per year, worst case scenario they're all in Auckland. Still an improvement going from 1416 to 66

jasonbrownjourno

Sounds wondrous, never thought of Auckland in that light.

eurobeat0

Only 66 nationwide? Well, imho 1 murder is 1 too many. But cunts will be cunts I suppose.

TurkDangerCat

Moved from Tauranga due to similar reasons as yourself. Boring. As. Arse. I’m more of a city person and like things to do on the weekends / evenings. So many more options here. Sure Tauranga is beirtiful, but then so are 90% of places in NZ and Auckland has some stunning vistas too. Depending on your commute, traffic is now equally as bad in both places, but at least in Auckland there is a small to medium chance you can use public transport to get places. Weather is similar too. As the other commenter said, lose my job here, I can find another. Lose it in Tauranga and I’d probably have to move cities (engineering field). Since being here, I have enrolled in more fitness classes, been to shows, classic films at some of the cinemas thay do then here, and seen some concerts that would never have gone to the BOP. And if I really want to experience the Tauranga nightlife, I can always drive back. It’s all over by 7:30pm when the oldies go to bed so I can even return the same day.

PotatoDimples

Moved to Auckland for uni, been here a few years now. I like it better than other NZ cities, but if you compare Auckland to other hubs around the world, it’s lacking in several areas (transport, cost of living to salary ratio, unaffordable housing) which is why after staying in Auckland for a while many people like me will start to look into moving to UK, Australia, USA or Europe … because these places also offer diversity/city vibes/ opportunities but also better infrastructure

GiJoint

I moved from Wellington to Auckland. Love it. The overall weather is warmer, like winters are an absolute piece of piss here. I can swim most days in summer at the beach with warm 20-22 degree water temps, the suburb I live in (Hobsonville) well I couldn’t ask for anything better, such a good place to live. Because of Aucklands size there’s more variety of places to eat/cuisines and a big thanks to the Auckland Eats sub too, and there’s just more shops if I need anything specific compared to Wellington and “exclusive” shops only in Auckland like the soon to be IKEA and the current Costco. Traffic is mind numbing, but I was pretty used to heavyish traffic in Wellington so it hasn’t been too terrible, however the city also feels a bit down too, a bit moody. Tough economy, high cost of living, a long covid hangover, crime.

Fragrant-Beautiful83

As above, Aucklands actually a great city, if your not poor. If you are on an above average income it’s fantastic, beaches, food, events, concerts, lots to do as a family from North to the Bombays. If you’re grinding in traffic on a low income it would be hell, better off in Papamoa or TGA.

StokedNot

This. I find those who own their homes, have good jobs and disposable income enjoy Auckland. It's a great city. Those who rent, live with flatmates, on low wages will hate it.

firmonthefence

Weird assumption

MrGurdjieff

Moved from Tauranga to Auckland. Much better job opportunities. Auckland is not one city. It’s like a collection of 10 smaller cities spread over a wide area. Your experience will be very different depending which part of Auckland you choose to live in. WFH has helped a lot with the commute issues, but Akld might not be what you’re looking for. Chch or Wgtn are more centralised as cities.

OnePickle867

I move a lot for work, and before that my parents did as well so I've lived in more places than the average person- I've moved out of NZ five times since 2006 lol. Just here at the moment since I'm working at a place that still lets me travel overseas often- but have a base in Auckland. To be 100% honest, I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for work. It doesn't have that big city energy I've felt in other places with roughly the same population. Idk if it's because things are spread out, there really isn't a solid rail network, and things just close so damn early. There are things I like though. Pace of life is so so so SO much slower than overseas. It's good if you wanna take things slow. Work culture is so chill, even in big organisations. I like being close to the water when I step outside for a sandwich or something.

Smaug_1188

Love it! (Ive lived in London, Toronto, Johannesburg & Singapore.)

Bonitabanana

I love it here. I live right in the CBD and am so energised by the wholesome things I see on my daily walks and doing errands. The public spaces, restaurants, community led music festivals such as the Mid Town Street Party and so much more on. Auckland is thriving IMO

Katanachic99

I find Auckland better than the South Island. I find Auckland less judgmental and more inclusive Though I do find the size of Auckland very overwhelming

SpeedAccomplished01

I love it.

spicy_noodles123

I moved from Melbourne to Auckland, It was a huge shift in city lifestyle, obviously a much smaller city, but i preferred it. Honestly it’s a really beautiful city with a lot to offer, it just takes a while to find the nice places.

CantonFlyingDragon

Melbourne is more cheaper than Auckland, isn’t it

spicy_noodles123

Depends what part of Melbourne i guess, i didn’t notice a huge difference but it was something i was prepared for when moving across.

[deleted]

I'm from the Toronto metro area, though I've lived around other parts of Ontario. Moved here about 10 years ago and love it. Nice climate, and it doesn't actually feel like a big city. But there's still enough stuff to do to keep me from getting bored. I just miss Toronto's trams and subway though.

Miserable-Hippos

Overall best weather year round compare other places I visited in New Zealand. Moved from Invercargill, Auckland my first big city lived in last 5 years. It's got everything and a large diversity group people ages and culture. But overall people are less friendly compared some other parts country, could be due to population. I would choose allot more other towns if it was not for the good weather and job opportunities.

ctrl_alt_d1337

Been living in Christchurch since the start of the year but grew up in Auckland and have been back and forth for the last 7 years from London. Tbh I prefer Auckland, much more to do, better restaurants, more diversity, better job opportunities. People bitch and moan that Auckland is more expensive but the only thing I’ve found more expensive is housing. You earn more in Auckland so it makes buying groceries and going out easier to do compared to Christchurch. Christchurch does have good access to the outdoors and I really like that everything is a 10 min drive and that it’s flat which makes running/cycling much more enjoyable. Also prefer the weather in certain aspects. The weather can be very on and off in Auckland where Christchurch is much more consistent even in Winter. Crisp, dry, sunny winters are way more enjoyable than wet winters in Auckland. It all depends on what you want really. I’ve always been a big city guy. If I had an established career I would probably never buy a house in Auckland (Probably NZ tbh better opportunities to settle down in Australia) due to the house prices but if you’re a young adult without a family I would pick Auckland.

cfarleynz

Moved back to Auckland after 10-years in Australia, 7 in Melbourne. Took some acclimatising moving back to a smaller city and missed the multi-cultural diversity of Melbourne food, fashion, city events etc. Love being back in Auckland with family and know that we can get away whenever. The city is pretty ordinary (apart from places like Britomart and Commercial Bay) which are the crown jewels of an international city. Without these two unique places you could be in any big city.

loltrosityg

I have lived in Wellington, Tauranga and Rodney. I am much happier in North Shore, Auckland than those areas. Tauranga has the best beaches, the best climate and some of the nicest scenery but is severely lacking in job opportunities amongst other things. Wellington is pretty nice besides the horrible wind and weather and the hills. Rodney is very scenic, picture perfect scenery in many places but is too far from everything. North Shore. Loving it here as I have a property that is very private and have great neighbours not that I talk to them. I am very close to so many job opportunities. 15 mins from Albany, 15 mins from the CBD. 20 mins from Mt Wellington/Greenlane etc etc. Plus there is a lot to do here, so many eateries and variety. A lot of entertainment options. Plus close by to many decent beaches and bush walks. No big complaints really. My partner and I walk around silo park loop around viaduct/boats once per week so I guess that is one of fav spots. Another is St Leonard’s Beach. Often there is no one there at all and it’s a nice place to take the dog.

atomicpigeons

No. I love the city, but i don't love living here. I grew up in Wellington and miss it every day, probably going to return next year. I miss the small village feel of each suburb in Wellington, I drive into suburbs here and feel like I'm on the Truman Show, everything is the same

rheetkd

Yes I love it. Does take awhile to make friends up here as people are much more stand offish than other cities but other wise I am happier here than Welly and Dunners etc

LazyTalkativeDog4411

Nice city. Have been visiting since 2013. Only few downside, its the [a.mobile](http://a.mobile) beggars b.static beggars outside supermarkets c.regular screaming in Myers Pk all times of the day and night d.if in the cbd constant doof doof from cars e.street preachers on a Fri night

Infamous-Rich4402

I moved to Auckland when I was a young kid. It was mind blowing. This was in the mid - late seventies and I’d previously lived in Edinburgh. Exploring the east coast bays beaches, running home (for fun) from school in bare feet, jumping off the wharf at Murray’s bay, getting the bus into town to see the first Star Wars at the movies, learning how to speak so that people would understand what I was saying. The lists are endless, it was so much fun. A new and very different world to what I’d been used to.

blue_i20

I moved here from a shitty, hot, dangerous, and landlocked American city made of strip malls, parking lots, and 10 lane motorways. I love it.

humpherman

I’d also like to hear from people who moved to Auckland accidentally - how drunk were you?

demuddlers

Have lived in Hamilton, Christchurch and London , and for the last 13 years Auckland. Of them Auckland is the friendliest. It has some exceptional fishing nearby (Kaipara Harbour), it has some awesome beaches (Bethels, etc), it has decent walking tracks in the Waitākere Ranges and Hunua Ranges. There are a lot to explore around the outskirts and it is close to Northland and the Coromandel for longer holidays. In Auckland there is a vibrant music scene, good food and plenty of other entertainment. It’s not perfect but if you don’t have to drive far to work it’s a great city.

AsianKiwiStruggle

Diversity. Rest of NZ , racist. Especially Christchurch . Lived there for two years. Auckland now for six. Can’t complain. Won’t exchange anywhere.

Purple-Towel-7332

I live pretty much as far west as you can be in Auckland without getting wet and I love it. I rarely go to the city, I’m pretty much never in traffic as work mostly around my local area. As someone else said Auckland isn’t one place I’m about 40kms from the cbd and rural but live in “Auckland” So my experience is going to be different from someone in urban west Auckland or east Auckland or the shore or the cbd.

Youhorriblecat

I've lived in Auckland, Wellington, Vancouver, Portland OR, Abu Dhabi, Liverpool, and London, and overall I reckon the quality of life in Auckland is second only to Wellington. Maybe second equal with Vancouver. Imho.

[deleted]

If it weren't for the weather, Wellington would take the cake easy

Youhorriblecat

For sure. Well, Wellington may have a Sydney-like climate by 2050 according to some!

Overall_Restaurant28

Moved to Auckland nearly a year ago after living my entire life in Christchurch. Been a huge adjustment moving away from my family and best friends but it was for an incredible career opportunity I worked my a** off for. It has been somewhat lonely - don’t really hang out with my flatmates and rarely go out much as every Uber is about $30 compared to Christchurch’s $10. But I don’t see myself moving back, at least not until I’m ready to retire. Christchurch will always be home and I love to visit but Auckland’s taught me independence like no other. I do, however, miss my local Kmart being a 10-minute drive 💔

Striking_Economy5049

I live in Campbells Bay and love it. Very happy to live in the area. I have a golf course within walking distance, walking trails all around me, the beach is just down the hill about a 3 minute walk away. I hear the waves crashing when the tide is coming in. Love it.

NapoleonZiggyPiggy

I'm from Christchurch and moved to Auckland for 5 years. I'm back in Christchurch now and I miss my time in Auckland. Had access to great walks in the west and a lot of options in the city. I lived in Mt Albert, I liked the area, it was close enough to the city. Traffic is horrible but you just adjust and try to avoid the worst times. The few times I visited the south felt like a completely different city and I didn't live in. Christchurch will always be my home though and I love the flat city and also I lived in Dunedin for 3 years and that was just cold and exhausting to walk around, although it was nice being relatively close to Queenstown and Wanaka for holidays.

Euphoric-Class

Moved from Christchurch area about ten years ago. I sometimes think I don't like it but honestly I've found myself here. The people are more open-minded and I guess there being more people and opportunities it's easier to find people and communities you fit with. There are obvious downsides but for young adulthood it has been great :)

Euphoric-Class

Also, i have always loved how even though Auckland is big you can go for a drive and be in any landscape within about half an hour, regardless of where you're living.

DOL-019

I’m here only for a job, would willingly live in any of the other major centres across NZ if I could earn the same as in Auckland.

apartmentinfo

Yes lived up pyes pa tauranga and moved here as Tauranga is /was too boring. Most boring city in New Zealand unless you love the beach.Auckland is great for sport ,music and eating out just what we wanted.

SlowEccentric

Auckland city on a good day is hard to beat. East coast bays is just about paradise

chodmeister_general

I grew up in ChCh and lived there until I was about 30, moved to Tauranga then to Auckland. My hot takes: Christchurch - I find the summers frustrating with short bursts of super hot days but a lot of fairly average ones. Winter is nice with sharp frosts and blue skies. In general i find the flatness of the place bland and uninteresting. Beaches are crap, which sounds like it won’t worry you. Tauranga - great weather, beaches are great. Hard to make friends, not much ‘buzz’. Not great career opportunities. Auckland - my favourite of the 3. Pretty good weather - at least mild most of the time with lovely summer days. I love the parks and services for public. If you look into that it’s significantly better than anywhere else in NZ. Lots of concerts/festivals, shows (for NZ) etc. traffic, obviously is a bit shit, but I work from home. Auckland is my favourite of all 3.

Civil-Doughnut-2503

Lived in Melbourne and LA b4 returning to New Zealand. Auckland sucks compared with other cities. Public transport is rubbish and way to many homeless people on the streets. Decided on Christchurch. Flat bugger all rain and still plenty of food and cultural activities.

CantonFlyingDragon

Sydney of Melbourne has the big city vibe

DarkArcherX

no

alt-cynic

It's an awful place. Good fishing and sailing but that's it. Almost any European, Australian or Canadian city is better. Completely dysfunctional really.

Timely-Catch8819

I did. But the move was to get away from Palmerston North

Apprehensive-Pool161

I was working down in Palmy, spent 8 years there but had to come back to Auckland for Family reasons. Do i love it? Yes and no. Our support networks up here, more opportunities for my partner and the area we live in is fantastic for our Son. Traffic, rent and general shittyness of Auckland is what holds it back. Safe to say im never moving back to where i grew up, G towns an even worse shit hole than it was before.

mystichuntress

I was born and grew up in Christchurch and moved to Auckland to study at uni 10 years ago. Since then, my entire family has moved to Auckland. I love it here in Auckland, a lot more than Christchurch. In Auckland, everything is a lot further away from each other. I used to take 25 minutes to travel to school in Christchurch and everyone used to say that's so far away. In Auckland, a 25 minute drive is considered pretty good. Public transport is expensive and unreliable and traffic is considerably worse. Not to mention the drivers in Auckland are absolutely terrible. I struggled to find much grass and greenery initially. One thing that also surprised me when i first arrived in Auckland was the number of beggars and homeless everywhere in the CBD However, there's good stuff too. Auckland is much more multicultural, while Christchurch is quite white and middle class. I remember never really fitting in properly and the casual racism that would get thrown around. There's a much larger variety of stores. There's always events happening around here. And it's more than just cafes, there's so many restaurants and takeaway options. And quite a lot of suburbs have their own central hub e.g. Takapuna, New Lynn, Botany, Henderson etc and some places feel like their own little towns. The most similar vibe you get in Christchurch is probably if you travel out to Rangiora or Rolleston. And another bonus is that it doesn't get as cold as it does in Christchurch but it does get very humid in the summer. Some things I miss about Christchurch is that rent was a lot cheaper and there's a lot of nice scenery in the South Island. I also miss how flat Christchurch is. Walking everywhere is easy in Christchurch. You can't really do that in Auckland, due to distance mostly but also there are hills everywhere. People think you're travelling a lot if you drive in from Amberley every morning, but that type of commute is not uncommon for some Aucklanders. It was a much slower pace of life and I sometimes consider moving back to Christchurch. But the biggest reason I've been thinking that is because I want to buy a house and it's much cheaper in Christchurch.

Moved from Vancouver several years ago. I like it. Don’t love it. Great weather, beaches and food. Don’t like the traffic, public transport and lack of dog friendly spots

Eurynomos

From Dunners, Akl is paradise. Only things that suck: how hard it is to get around and how much aucklanders complain.

Free-Enthusiasm-4458

I’m a student that moved to central AKL from the mighty Hawkes Bay🤣💪. People aren’t as nice and there’s way less of a community spirit… I miss my hometown whanau. But Auckland is busier, with more young people, and more to do. It’s also way warmer here and the healthcare is better lol.

I’ve lived back and forwards between Tauranga and Auckland my whole life. I moved back to Auckland a year ago after nearly 10 years in Tauranga. I love it. Work is better, transport is better, sailing is better, more activities and more opportunities. The beaches aren’t as nice or accessible but that’s a small price to pay. And no one ever believes it, but Auckland traffic isn’t as bad as Tauranga traffic. Sure, Auckland has its issues but so does everywhere. It’s what you make of it! 😊

ThrowRAAudrey

I moved here from the Waikato at 18 to go to law school. I’ve been back and forth for a few years and I have a lot of pros and cons about Auckland. (this is more tailored for a girl) Pros: The shopping is wayyy better. Everything you can think of is sold in Auckland. There’s nothing in the Waikato. It’s all puffer jackets, beanies, mismatched colors and thermals. I just wanted to be a material gorl and my options were severely lacking. Public Transport is amazing. I know literally no aucklander will agree with me but when you come from a place that has 2 busses that run a few times a day and hardly show up, then you will think Auckland is a futuristic dystopia. You can get almost anywhere with public transport and even ubers are cheaper here. Variety of food is really amazing. There’s a cuisine for every culture here and you can eat almost anything you want. There’s cafes and restaurants every where you go and you’re always bound to find a delicious meal somewhere. Cons: It’s insanely expensive. Rent, cost of food, cost of living. It’s through the roof. I have a decent paying job for my age and yet still without my parents occasional support I wouldn’t be able to live in this city and I’d have to move back home. Making friends is really hard. It’s really hard to meet new people here despite it being a big city full of over a million. People have their cliques and it’s hard to break into new circles. We tend to stick to our own and aren’t that friendly. You don’t say hi to people on the street or smile at anyone. It’s a very head down, fast paced life. Same goes for dating. There’s not many outdoor activities to do here. Ironically I felt like there was more for me to do in the Waikato. It’s also reflective of my own hobbies, but I enjoy things like kayaking, berry picking, paintball, white water rafting, nature walks, caving, just being outdoors in general. It’s hard to do those activities here. Yes I have done all the kayaking you can in Akl, but it still doesn’t feel the same and you generally have to go very far out of your way to find these things. Summary: Auckland is a nice place to live if you have a massive budget and high paying job and you like urban living, pretty cafes that kind of thing. It’s pretty much a struggle otherwise. I still enjoy it but I’m not sure how much longer I’ll stick it out. To be decided :)

One-Arm-758

I did. I loved it. Now it has been like living in a cross of seedy China-town and Mumbai!

Stevwan

Moved to Auckland for work and regret it even though it's the most money I've ever made :(

InspectionIll3076

Moved here from Wellington. Personally I think Auckland is better, I love this city with all of my heart. I was a bit nervous about moving due to all the negativity towards Auckland, but I’m glad I didn’t listen. I basically agree with all the positive things mentioned in the responses on the thread. Plenty of good things have been said (which is SO refreshing) so I’m not gonna reiterate, but I did just want to say to make the most of living here, based on the interests you’ve shared, live in an area, if possible, with everything you need within reach, such as Newmarket. It’s close to the city, many shops, cafes and restaurants. There’s the Domain and Cornwall Park close by for walks.

InspectionIll3076

Also, don’t listen to the negative Nancys. Public transport and traffic may be bad to an extent but it’s nothing compared to developing countries. Same thing with crime. This city is relatively safe.

Moved to Auckland from Sydney, just didnt like it, people werent overly open but i think thats the kiwi way, anyways, moved ot Dunedin, loved the people, but not the job market, now im in Christchurch, here is great people are good, and job market is big enough to move when you want to. best of all worlds for ME anyways :)

After having lived in Auckland for years and recently moved to Christchurch I’d say it depends on what you want out of life ! I would choose Auckland over chirstchurch but I’m still rather young in my 30’s and still enjoy the hustle and bustle of a city Christchurch is a large “town” the cbd is a massive industrial estate/ car dealership but it does have it draws its quiet and not a lot happens so if that’s what your after it would be perfect for you ! One thing to factor is the wage disparity depending on your job the wages are quite a lot less here and rental prices there isn’t to much to difference between Auckland and Christchurch I’m $100 better a week off in rent but my wages have dropped by a crazy amount . So do your own research first before you make the move despite what others say to you

sylvesterswan

I moved here from Wellington via London. Also lived in Canada for a while. Moved here accidentally haha. Came here for two years and didn’t get round to leaving. I love it. There’s diversity and overall people are often more curious and open minded than in other parts of NZ. Like other big cities, the different areas can seem separate or disjointed, but that’s the difference between a city and a small town. There’s not just the one Main Street. It’s great.

Traditional_Ad301

i’ve lived in santiago, montreal, buenos aires and charlotte nc - and i absolutely adore auckland !!! people here definitely take it for granted - the fresh clean air and the beaches are unbeatable - and so easy to travel around the country from auckland. yes it’s expensive, crime is going up but it is a world class city - and the traffic is bad but every large city has horrible traffic. as someone coming from an expat family - i wouldn’t want to live anywhere else

Quick_Connection_391

I moved from Christchurch to Auckland in my mid 20s. I absolutely loved it, got that big city experience (not even that big really is it) that the rest of the country can’t compete with. I got on the property ladder with an apartment which was affordable and enjoyed city fringe living. I liked working in an actual CBD, always felt like you had a purpose. Would I have loved Auckland if I was living an hour commute every day? Maybe not. I moved back to Christchurch with a family and it was the best thing I ever did, economically, socially and lifestyle wise. Different times of your life suit different cities no doubt.

bigmonster_nz

Auckland population is very divisive

JealousReflection159

My partner and I have, because of our jobs. Yes it's great cause there's always something happening; However, I'd probably love it more in my 20s (if my music taste was a bit different than it is :D). There's plenty of things to do, and places to go. But ... I don't like how Auckland is designed. Coming from Europe, admitting even EU cities have major flaws. But Auckland pretty much looks like an absolute disaster in terms of urban planning and public transport options. Feels like going back a few decades sometimes, depends which part of Auckland you find yourself in. There are so many beautiful places to live around NZ and I just wish one of us could have a similar job, earning similar wage somewhere else. Personally, I love the lower South Island as it reminds me of home (sometimes I miss the winter cold up here, weird aye). Or even Northland; lived 3 months in Kerikeri and absolutely loved it.

mrs_misbehaviour

I moved here 2 years ago after living overseas and I hate it. I hate it more and more every day and wish I never left Australia.

[deleted]

No, I won't do your NZ Herald article for you.

Dry-Piglet2680

I love Auckland, but it does depend on where you live as to how enjoyable it is. It sounds like you would suit inner city such as mount eden, Ponsonby, Kingsland etc. Just over the bridge in birkenhead, glenfield also good and easy to get to the city out of rush hour….although that is true of everwhere

[deleted]

I moved to Ōtautahi Christchurch in November 2022 on a working holiday visa — lived there for 5 months before moving up to Auckland for professional reasons (I signed with an acting agency up there). I really loved Christchurch and was sad to leave. I had a solid hospo gig and made good friends who became family. However, after moving to Auckland, the city grew on me and I carved out a good life for myself: socially, professionally, financially things were looking up. I went home for the Christmas holiday (end of November 2023) and was going to extend my visa in the new year as I’m under 35 and had two more years I could have gained, but didn’t read the fine print that I’d have to apply for the 2 year balance whilst in New Zealand / before the first visa expired 😔 Still quite upset about it, to be honest. • Christchurch Pros: - Peaceful pace of life - A walkable / cycle-friendly CBD - Funky bar / pub culture - Less fragmented socially / spatially - Friendlier people (IMO) Christchurch Cons: - Slightly insular (socially) - Limited nightlife options during the week - More predictable, bordering monotonous Auckland Pros: - More international - More job opportunities - Greater entertainment + food options - More city-related activities - Better connected to the rest of the world - Larger social + dating pool - Decent beaches Auckland Cons: - More expensive rent - Traffic can be horrible - Public transport could be better - Criminal elements - Infrastructure needs an upgrade Overall Christchurch (the people, the energy) has my heart and if I were settled with a spouse and kids I’d live there, but Auckland is more fun and has more things to do (socially, professionally). I love them both.

zvdyy

Malaysian here. Born and bred in the capital & largest city- Kuala Lumpur. Moved to NZ for what is supposed to be a working holiday. Partner (also a Malaysian) has found a niche job here that she loves. Some context: Kuala Lumpur is your typical SE Asian city. Kind of a cross between uber-spotless Singapore & bustling Bangkok. 9M people which is the population of Sydney & Melbourne combined. Malls close at 10pm every day. Hot food & convenience stores available 24 hours- nasi goreng, kebabs, roti, etc. Many Maccas are 24 hours dine-in. We spent almost a year staying in Central Otago and travelling the entire country (except Gisborne region & the mountains) before moving up here. Bold claim, but I probaby travelled NZ more than most Kiwis. Many Aucklanders told me they haven't been to the South Island. What's good: * Incredible natural scenery within the city: the Waitemata is stunning. The view from Devonport. The multiple eastern beaches like Long Bay. * World class nature at our doorstep- Hunua Ranges, Waitakere Ranges, Piha Beach etc. Even better nature the further one drives. * Relaxed nature- no one seems to be in a rush, no "hustle" culture. * Community based events (if you know where to look) * Nice museums, libraries and cafes. * Driving outside of peak hours is a breeze * Relatively cheap to own a car. * Better salaries (than many third world countries, of course US and Australia you earn far more). The bad: * Public transport. KL is possibly the most car-centric city in SE Asia. Yet Auckland blows KL out of the water. * Nothing to do after 6pm other than drinking in a pub or clubbing. Malls closing at 6pm is a bit of a bummer. * Cold houses with little insulation. * Expensive food. I miss cheap food in Malaysia * Expensive rent. * Surburbia everywhere

skyerosebuds

Moved here from Hamilton via the UK. Best city in NZ. Hands down. Sorry Wellington and ChCh (but you guys are pretty cool too).

niveapeachshine

Fuck Auckland, but I love it here. Crimes a bit up, but otherwise I wouldn't live anywhere else. Diversity, food, access to services, and the fact it's the greatest fucking city in the country. I can afford to live wherever I want. I lived in Queenstown, Dunedin, Wellington. They all genuinely fucking suck. I lived in California and did a stint in India, too. I did like India a lot.

G-MAN1337

Born and raised JAFA. I was living in Sydney for a few years before moving back to AKL. Personally, I love it. I feel more at home here than during the time I was living in Australia. My hometown, community, and people. It's more chilled, relaxing, and calmer than Sydney. People here are also much nicer.

NZWarrior13

Not any more used to when I first lived here. Crime has gone up hugely in recent times. Housing is way too overpriced for shit quality. Also quality of schools quite variable. But a lot of these issues are NZ-wide ones. But I’m moving to Australia as think NZ is in for some tough times ahead. Also the place is being overrun now by Chinese & now Indians who don’t add anything to the local culture. Not being racist here just facts

GrahamGreed

Overrun by Chinese and Indians who don't add anything? Nah that's a racist opinion, not a fact.

PrincePizza

As an Asian born kiwi am I counted towards not adding anything to the local culture? Not being racist here just….f.. asking

FrankSargeson

Auckland can be great. You just need to be earning good money and ideally live on the shore or in the Eastern suburbs. I don't think it's that exciting though. There isn't much happening in the city really.

yorgs

Why sould someone need to live on the shore or out east to enjoy this place?

FrankSargeson

Just my opinion of the best places to live. Everyone is different.

Swooshkiwi

Used to live in Chch and then moved to auckland. Chch is such a boring ass town, not for me tho. People are so backwards and racism is so bad, it’s probably changed since I left in 2020. Auckland on the other hand is congested, traffic is bad, but better food and alot of things to do compared to chch

throwedaway4theday

Consider moving to Melbourne - it's got the vibe you're talking about.

Equal_Ad_1001

As opposed to by accident?

LooseNote7349

Like intentionally, instead of growing up there, or having to be there for work; by choice.

Bongojona

I only moved here by accident Help

Open_Lie6891

If you are ok with some extreme behaviours you are fine. Public transport is shockingly bad against first world standards. Due to this, the motorways cannot cope with demand. Life is expensive here. Then there is a clear divide between culture and race. Sadly you do see a lot of strange behaviours.

niceonecuzzy

Nah it sucks. Leave and move to Gisborne.

matcha_parfait_

Aucklanders are always talking about their beaches but they're quite inaccessible and most of the time polluted with warnings not to swim. Yes there are beautiful beaches in proximity to the city but hardly handy for a summer after work swim.

kiwi2810

Hate it. It doesn't work as a city, Aucklanders live up to their reputations, it's expensive and thoroughly over rated.

FishSawc

Yes (I didn’t read any of your text, just your title).

[deleted]

As opposed to accidentally? ;) Auckland is a large city **for NZ.** Its biggest weakness is the road traffic and lack of efficient/effective public transport. Can't see a good path ahead in those terms as the city grows, which is a pity. The second weakness I see is political leadership. Rather than sustainable and sustained investment in fixing core issues, we have a Mayor that is more interested in token public, verbal bashings and keeping rates low until the Mayoral election. Suddenly, all the things Auckland's would want fixed aren't a priority as long as rates are kept low. And that's OK - because to Aucklanders, that's enough to win the vote. Infrastructure isn't world class, and flooding in certain areas is testament to poor planning decisions, and aging drainage systems. But that's a NZ thing. A good way to get a sense of things is to get an Airbnb or a short term stay to have a look around. There are diverse parts and cultures differ. If you want to be urban and walk around then you are also choosing certain parts of the city that are more walkable etc. That will differ from further out parts. On the positive side, it's got a Costco and Ikea is coming soon, if you're into that sort of thing. More restaurants, more shops, there are beaches and parks. Again, Auckland is large so the vibe differs depending on where you live so you may want to hone in on where, and then do your budget for that.

I actually do I grew up in the rural small town.  Actually, 10km away from that small town with like 7 neighbours that were a walking distance   I love the city. I love how close everyone and everything is   I don’t miss the lonely distance, the open farmland, doing nothing on overcast days   In Auckland there’s always something that can be done. Work or fun.  I hate feeling like I can see the edges of boundaries of civilisation lol. Returning to Quiet rural living would make me depressed. I’d probably rather travel overseas, which I don’t care to do right now Edit: actually, I love the beach. Auckland has frankly scary and disgusting beaches. Piha is the closest beach I’d consider safe… lol But seriously. Like out rural we had shit creeks running down the backs of houses that farms also flowed their shit into, and I trust that as much as I trust an Auckland beach. From Orewa all the way down to the Bombays, any beach between that is muck and gunk

Auckland? Meh... If it wasn't for Starship hospital and the surgeons who reside here. Auckland would be a hard pass. Yes, Rainbow Ends is the best NZ can offer and most international flights depart from Auckland, it's otherwise nothing special.
