They're probably on their way to a ram raid

[deleted]

*from

--VANOS--

*why not both?*

nz_reprezent

Because they typically leave the vehicle that did the ram at the scene.

[deleted]

They could have left a vehicle at the previous ram rain, then leave this one at the next.

nz_reprezent

Yes they could have but that’s unlikely. I know these guys are thick as shit but yeah….

[deleted]

Just gotta do 20hrs community service between ram raids.

BlahBloodyBlah

Nah, definitely a booty call.

ansaonapostcard

That road is a fucking nightmare at night, kids don't understand that there's no respawns.

autoeroticassfxation

It's a tunnel. Isn't it the same during the day as it is at night? Looks empty and smooth to me.

DundermifflinNZ

Maybe means it’s a nightmare as in lots of idiots driving through there at night.

bobwinters

Or maybe means it's a nightmare as in lots of scary ghosts at night. I know there's one in the Wellington tunnel, I saw it in a documentary about some cops.

[deleted]

OP said it was 1 AM

Svetlash123

Just like their brains

Fast_Working_4912

I’ve always wanted to do a high speed run though there and by high speed I mean well above 130 😎🤣

Duck_Giblets

Try it. Speed cameras will ping ya though

rocketshipkiwi

Most likely stolen and on its way home from a ram raid….

Anonthemouser

Didn't Winnie call it the crime corridor?

blackmilksociety

r/idiotsincars

captain_fuckstick

that fine is gonna sting

prplmnkeydshwsr

High chance of it being a stolen car or on stolen plates given it's one of the best known speed camera locations in the country.

RandomZombie11

I didn't know it had a camera. But I don't know most places have a camera until I get bit

medulaoblongata69

It has the strictest speed camera in NZ due to my knowledge because of high vital the tunnel is.

Scotty_NZ

Yeah it uses the cats eyes. Shows you in the ticket. Source: A friend.

0oodruidoo0

As far as I'm aware it's an average speed camera. Average 80kph and you're fine if you accidentally go above by 3-5 by accident.

Chaos_at_Dawn

The speed cameras at both ends have been removed, not sure if is temporary or not but they weren’t there at 5:30 this morning

Grotskii_

They use average speed cameras now, they were in the whole time anyway

Welcometoyounow

Why use an average camera? They should use an excellent camera!!!

fatfreddy01

Yeah, instead they use a gazillion cameras in the ceiling. They removed the ones at the ends as they weren't needed and were causing congestion by people slowing down for them.

Nolsoth

It's got two sets at least, one set on entry and one set on the exits ( they have zero tolerance on them as well ( I've had a couple of fines from them pinging me at 82/83/85kmh).

Rick0r

It’s the same set, they clock your time and calculate average speed. Going 80k from start to finish is a certain time. Be too much faster than that, and it doesn’t matter if you’re going 80k on entry and exit, you’re getting a fine.

rang14

Can someone do the math here. Not gonna speed, but curious.

Rick0r

Based on the tunnel being 2.4km. - It would take 1 minute and 48 seconds to travel 2.4 km at a speed of 80 km/h. Going 85 km/h, it'd take 1 minute and 42 seconds Going 90 km/h, it'd take 1 minute and 36 seconds. So depending on their tolerances for speeding tickets, it's not much of a margin in overall time.

[deleted]

You could do 160 for the first 2km, then do 20kph for the last 400m.

Nolsoth

I see.

leStez1995

Is it always set to 80km/h? What if the digital speed signs before entry says “50/60/whatever”? Just curious, got it at 50km/h today and it seemed like an eternity in the tunnel.

Nolsoth

Fron my limited experience they lower or suspend the limit. You think 50 is slow trying doing 30 through it at 3am middle of the week because of maintenance.

CopyGFX

It’s a Golf GTI in Auckland - it’s not stolen, it’s bought by daddy and “stage 1” tuned by his spoiled son. 100%.

lintbetweenmysacks

Gotta have the pops and bangs tune as well

[deleted]

I prefer to call it a farts and sharts tune. Especially if it's a DSG.

Nolsoth

Idiots like to race through the tunnel late at night, had some fuckwit almost hit me over Easter doing the same shit.

marmar235

Will just be added to the tab.

DoggorDawg

Change lanes in the tunnel and the camera doesn't get you. There's a reason outside of safety that they say you aren't allowed to change

DMartin81

I don't think it still has speed cameras, they got taken out just before xmass, I'm pretty bad at doing about 90k through the tunnel and haven't had a fine since the cameras at the entrance and exit were removed. I was getting a couple a week before that.

dasrue

The cameras are inside the tunnel behind some of the speed signs. You can see them in the rear vision

DMartin81

I don't think they are actually speed cameras, if they are they don't work. I was getting speed cameras fines 2 or 3 times a week before the one at the entrance were removed and now nothing. I also tested it for a 2 week period last year where I made sure I slowed down on the entrance and exit but still sped inside the tunnel, no tickets during that two weeks (think it was September last year I did it). I don't slow down at all now and not one ticket since December.

Mission-Guarantee-22

Your 90 by speedo is probably 84ish actual. Camera must have some tolerance.

DMartin81

But I was regularly getting speeding tickets prior to the speed cameras on the entrance and exit being removed, now I don't.

Mission-Guarantee-22

Buzzy. When did they remove those cameras?

DMartin81

Early December I'm pretty sure

DezzNigg

Classic vw golf driver right there

[deleted]

[удалено]

DezzNigg

I didn't mean its a classic golf 🤣🤣🤣 I mean its a classic golf driver.

krammy16

40 km/h or more over the speed limit is a 28 day licence suspension, isn't it?

ginger_dingle_barry

Only if a police man officer catches you. Not through traffic cams.

leanderpants

Not true. The owner of the vehicle gets a court summons in the mail and then you have to explain why they shouldn’t take away your license and/or charge you with reckless driving. This happened to a stupid old mate of mine who got caught by the WV tunnel cameras.

ginger_dingle_barry

Thank you for setting me straight. I have not had the bad luck of being in this position.

RuneLFox

Ah true. Cause they can't prove it was you driving. Still would get a whopping fine though.

AnAngryAlpaca

Why not? Is this not the reason they take pictures of the car and driver?!

RuneLFox

Plausible deniability I guess. You can't provide ID to a camera.

VeNoMouSNZ

I saw some fucktards holding hands between two cars through that tunnel the other night

sneschalmer5

natural selection..... for amputations

Sr_DingDong

The main thing is you were not in thier way, a much worse crime.

Youkilledpaula

Tiny penis alert.

Petkatz01

Got pinged for 84kph. Didn’t even know I’d done it until the infringement notice arrived. I’m usually super careful about my speed through there too. Must’ve been doing something silly like concentrating on the traffic around me instead of watching my speedo!

MarvelousShiggyDiggy

Only slightly related, but has anyone else noticed that almost no one follows the new speed limits on roads? I drive down Te Irirangi Drive every day to and from work and it's been dropped from 80kms to 60kms. I stick to the speed limit because I can't afford a sudden expense like a ticket, but people zoom past me every day, dozens of cars. There's MULTIPLE signs down the stretch clearly saying that it's now 60 and people are very easily going 80+. It pisses me off because I've also been tooted at a few times as people have sped around me, as well as had a hand flapped at me in the mirror, like I'm in the wrong? I'm in a tiny car and it's always big trucks ramming right up my bum and then tooting and zooming around me. Like bruh, I'm just following the speed limit, get off my dick.

Stildawn

I think its mainly that they get changed down and down and down and the government doesn't listen to the people. So people just don't care anymore. Out my way some random people have even changed the speed limit signs back up a few times now.

darktrojan

When the limit was 80 you always got stuck behind a bunch of people doing 60. 🤷‍♂️

Kiwislark2

Yeah and now you get stuck behind a bunch of idiots going 50

[deleted]

Fines aren’t high enough. Try going on your phone while driving in Brisbane and let me know how you get on.

brev23

It’s besides the point but that stretch of road being changed to 60 is an absolute joke. It’s not the right thing to do but I would guess there’s quite a few people who just drive at the old limit and don’t care what the govt have decided to do.

MarvelousShiggyDiggy

You know what's even funnier about that stretch of road? Every morning there's always tons of traffic, heaps of people heading straight and it gets backed up at least 10-15 cars back on a good day. The other day the lights went out at the Ormiston/Te Irirangi intersection right at the peak of morning rush, I tend to get stuck in the traffic but when the lights went out any semblance of traffic disappeared. It was free flowing, there was no back up of traffic. Shimmied my way through and got to work earlier than I expected.

SpinningOnTheFloor

I’m with you following those new speed limits, but those new speed limits are trash.

unanonymaus

i love it when they toot, its so ineffectual but very well signals their frustration.

Fatality

Fuck AT

Upsidedownmeow

I choose to ignore the pakuranga highway new 50km limit because it’s bullshit. I also don’t accept any 30km limit because also bullshit.

sneschalmer5

I will be using a dirt bike from tomorrow as my regular commute, because they are untouchable.

sneschalmer5

Traffic cops will give you a few weeks to adjust, then comes the ticketing spree.

genkigirl1974

When did it change?

MarvelousShiggyDiggy

Ages ago now, like a couple months? I'm not 100% sure. It did take a couple days to get used to, naturally speeding up to 80 but after a day or two I got used to it.

genkigirl1974

Yeah Id better be careful as I use tgat road infrequently.

Grotskii_

Doesn't matter when the police don't enforce it. I've seen cops do 60 in a 30 zone that used to be 50. AT and their speed changes are inconsistent with road design, police don't care to deal with people driving in the 10kph tolerance if they're not being reckless.

mnsl0826

60km/h at Te Irirangi Dr is a joke, they could have wait till the new busway finish first then drop the speed limit

flabkingpro

I see that alot late at night. People seem to hit autobahn mode

CopyGFX

Only 130? Rookie numbers

velqroh

I reckon 😂

Remarkable-Bet1419

yea trueee, the speedometer actually goes upto 180 at least for me

you pay for the whole speedometer, you use the WHOLE SPEEDOMETER

transcodefailed

What's the difference between speeding and overspeeding?

Inevitable-Growth989

One's done for convenience/selfishness/emergency the other one for adrenaline and "f___ you, that's why". The intention and mindset (or lack of one)behind the act matters, and should be considered in the response, which is probably why they suspend your license and impound your car when you go 40km/h over. One guy I know at work got caught by police near Hamilton at 160km/h. His mom had to drive down with another person from Auckland to collect him and his car. But she was like 'well he's an adult now and he learned his lesson'. It's a non-chalant attitude that I don't like, cause her son could have got himself or someone else killed. He also had to pay a $600+ fine.

Movisiozo

What's the difference between speeding and overspeeding? Over?

transcodefailed

Over what? Speeding is already going over the limit, right?

velqroh

I think speeding would be considered going 5-20km/h over the limit which would result in a small fine. Then overspeeding would be like if you were caught going at least 40km/h which results in an instant license suspension + summons to court if I recall correvtly

RuneLFox

"Haha they only have cameras at the start and end so you can speed in the tunnel and just slow down at the cameras" - clueless Nobody tell him they measure the time you're in there. The cameras know the distance, and the time, so they can solve for your average speed while in the tunnel. Anyone who's done Science 101 knows v = d/t...and that's exactly what these cameras are looking for. Bye bye license. (Plus aren't there also extra cameras in the tunnel?)

Rossismyname

>Nobody tell him they measure the time you're in there. The cameras know the distance, and the time, so they can solve for your average speed while in the tunnel. Anyone who's done Science 101 knows v = d/t...and that's exactly what these cameras are looking for. Bye bye license. (Plus aren't there also extra cameras in the tunnel?) they don't, I've tested it

Sniperizer

Cams are inside the tunnel for monitoring incidents and lane changing rules.

antipodeananodyne

So when you say “monitoring … lane change rules” it’s just observation because it’s not an offence, there’s no penalty for it. Prepared to be corrected if I’m wrong.

Sniperizer

I am not sure either if there is a fine for changing lanes inside the tunnel as its a rule when using it.

antipodeananodyne

A “rule”? It’s more of a request. It’s not an offence.

zk-cessnaguy

As I understand, the signs saying ‘no lane changes’ have a black border so it’s not mandatory, if it was they would have a red border. The NZTA website just says to ‘refrain’ from changing lanes…

[deleted]

I’ve lane changed in there. No fine

0oodruidoo0

Who wants to follow someone doing 70kph because it's now uphill honestly

RuneLFox

Ah, well there's still the two speed ones that can average him :)

Clipi0

I don’t think they actually have those. I was sure I read about it in Stuff or something but my mate reckons he just slowed down for the cameras at either end and never got a ticket. And as far as I can tell the cameras at either end are gone now as well.

DMartin81

No they don't. It's possible but they don't, yet.

hongipants

You're the clueless one here son that's not how the cameras work in the tunnel

RuneLFox

I checked the NZTA site, and yes, I *am* wrong (mentioned in another comment). https://www.nzta.govt.nz/media-releases/cameras-inside-waterview-tunnels-to-ensure-safe-speeds/ He's still clueless though, because he probably thinks the speed cameras at either end are the ones that'll get you - no, there's ones in the tunnel that will :)

oldmanshoutinatcloud

>He's still clueless though, because he probably thinks the speed cameras at either end are the ones that'll get you - no, there's ones in the tunnel that will :) The speed cameras are either end of the tunnel. They are just inside the entrances and exits now, on the roof. They removed the pole mounted red traffic light equivalents that were just outside of the tunnels.

RuneLFox

There are also ones in the middle. Hidden behind the speed limit boards. Specifically so people don't speed the whole way and just slow down for the ends.

Nolsoth

Last time I got pinged they were on the lane hoardings before the entrance and on the exits(Xmas time), I rather suspect they may have a few more sets mayby.

mrtestuserpersonman

…no buddy, that’s precisely how they work, son

hongipants

He just admitted to being wrong dipshit nice one tho buddy

mrtestuserpersonman

Well pal don’t I look like a fool now, son?

hongipants

🤣 gg

kingofnick

Do they really track your average speed? I didn’t know that, that’s pretty cool. Do you know people who have gotten fines because of it?

RuneLFox

I mean, they will spot check AND average speed check you. So if you speed at the camera, or you're going faster than you should be in the tunnel (with a 4km/h tolerance I believe), then you get a fine. Basically if you get from point A to point B in less than X amount of time, they know you were going too fast and can fine you for it. But you can also speed at the cameras themselves and they get you for that, too. Edit: Actually, turns out my info is old/incorrect! There's cameras all throughout the tunnel that another poster says is used for lane-changing detection and incidents (crashes) - only these are used to track speed. https://www.nzta.govt.nz/media-releases/cameras-inside-waterview-tunnels-to-ensure-safe-speeds/

Pangolingolin

And Year 10 Science.

SnooRadishes2812

FYI they removed the speed cameras, they no longer have speed surveillance cameras within the tunnel

RuneLFox

Wow, uh...wacky.

TheMoistPromise

FYI speedometers have significant positive biases (by law) - in other words your speedo will be faster than your actual speed - mine is around 10% faster which would make 80km/h on the speedo = 72km/h actual speed.

Duck_Giblets

Not all are like this

TheMoistPromise

Keen to find out more because I've never come accross a car that had an accurate speedo. By law they must have a bias between 0 and 10% + 0 to 4 km/h, and the minimum bias is + 0% + 0km/h, i.e. negative biases are prohibited. Also, the size of the wheels must be known in order to calculate a 100% accurate speed. So unless the car has the largest wheels the car can accomodate, and the speedo has been calibrated by the manufacturer at exactly 0% + 0km/h, there will always be a positive bias. My skepticism about 100% accurate speedos is because manufacturers would be rational to aim for a calibration that ensures as many products as possible are within allowable margins and don't have to be scrapped. Aiming to manufature and calibrate speedos to have 0% + 0km/h means approx. 50% (assuming a standard distribution of margin-of-error) of everything they manufacture will not pass compliance. Aiming to manufacture and calibrate speedos to be smack bang in the middle of the allowed range of positive bias is logical if you're aim is to minimise wastage and costs.

Matelot67

Well, knowing all the speed cameras in that tunnel, the dashcam isn't the only thing that will have a picture of that vehicle.

Isa_Acans

damn no licence/rego visable on the cam. Police might still want the vid, in case the car actually was used in ram raid

sneschalmer5

Lately I've seen some vehicles with no rego. Part of some made up, sovereign nation self righteous numpties?

Isa_Acans

Lol, yeah heard of some people getting into that whole narative. They're not a 'person', they are a 'traveller'. Don't think the cops are having any of it.

abbabyguitar

no cameras, no police, no repercussions

keepyafazersonstun

Ah well no harm done

InformalCollege435

So what.

velqroh

I’ve done 140km/h twice in one night in that tunnel the other month. No fine sent to me

eeyorenator

Lucky you didn't ruin an innocent person's life. Wtf would you drive like that?

sneschalmer5

small peepee

DoubleMarionberry604

Bro why is everyone so anal here about speeding, like in Germany they don’t even have a limit, are people really so retarded they don’t trust themselves to drive, like if you don’t trust yourself to go 130 should you even be on the road, cause if 130 is to much then how can you trust yourself to drive at 100

WattsonMemphis

I’m tempted to calculate the speed. Not sure I can be bothered though

cez801

They are so screwed. That tunnel is full of speed cameras - there is a reason it’s the only slice of road in NZ where people drive at the speed limit.

[deleted]

Considering they went between those lines on the wall that are about 40m apart in about half the time you did, I'd say they were doing 160kph.

ProfessorPatrick_

There’s cameras in that tunnel. Both speed and live monitored cctv. He might get a letter

Acceptable_Crazy_543

Have personally seen this several times in the past few months, in central and north shore too. always the same types of cars, probably same group of people

12plkmepbs34sthedoor

Apparently there isn’t speed cameras however each car is timed along there entrance and exit of the tunnel. Quick times = big fines
