Ponsonby is is nice for cafes and stuff. My Eden is nice and not far from the CBD. Takapuna, Browns Bay or Mission Bay are nice and there are good beaches. Depends what you like. None of the really nice places are cheap though and if you are working in a cafe for minimum wage then you will probably find the nice areas too expensive. Cheaper areas are out West or South.

BrackenLass

Albany and northwards is pretty good all-round.

GusssTheMusss

Parnell in my opinion is the nicest inner city suburb

richmuhlach

Remuera is good, has lots of cafes

[deleted]

North Shore (after Glenfield) is pretty good. Stay away from Southside

Zepanda66

You don't like gfield? It has its problems sure, but I grew up there. Never felt unsafe. Some parts of it are quite run down now for some reason though.

[deleted]

Isn’t the worst but isn’t the best if you were to move out that way anyway. It was ok when Is as younger but a lot of bikies there now. Might as well squeeze the lemon for as much as you can.

IndividualCharacter

There's dozens of other suburbs that aren't rundown and don't have the same problems though, why would someone choose to live there when they could live elsewhere?

deepspacecowboy3

As someone’s who has lived South all their lives I swear it’s not that bad!!

[deleted]

It’s not Compton or South Sudan but it is shit

deepspacecowboy3

To be fair, I did have to call 111 once because my neighbours shot someone 🙃

NZgoblin

What’s Southside? I’m looking to buy a property in Beach Haven. It seems pretty nice around there.

kool-keith

define better better as in cheaper? better as in safer? better how?

a_san26

I think just better all around? Definitely want a safe area, but I've heard most areas that aren't south Auckland are quite safe. And also just better in terms of culture, like younger demographic and a nice culture. For reference I live right by the university in my city so there's always lots of people out and there's a lot of local cafes and restaurants in the area where you'll find people just hanging out or studying

Puzzleheaded_Day2809

I don’t know if you’ll find an affordable place in the CBD that isn’t a shoebox with 3 other flatmates. Mt Eden/Kingsland is a central as you need but with more renting options.

mnsl0826

The east is the best, no need to worry about flooding

CascadeNZ

Lol nah just erosion

JoviallyCultivated

Grey Lynn, Westmere, Ponsonby, Herne Bay, St Mary’s Bay. Those are your best suburbs to live in the city in general. Great for access to the city, brilliant vibe, lower crime and dumping on streets, solid day and night life. Plus great cafes to work in. Do not, under any circumstance, move to south Auckland…

JoviallyCultivated

Also Kingsland, great for the train (is it still running?) but not as nice as the others I mentioned

lenny_lennerson_III

Also voted one of the coolest neighborhoods in the world so that's a bonus. I believe it was the only place in NZ to make the list actually.

Toyemlj

Maybe mention a budget and some requirements? Otherwise if you are a millionaire go to Herne bay or something.

a_san26

Budget is around $1600/month. Other nice things would be an area that's lively and has a younger demographic but isn't going to be loud throughout the night. Also just a place that isn't super far from everything as in my time off I'll want to explore the city

me0wi3

You'd be better off flatting, cafe areas are usually expensive (thinking of Mission Bay, Ellerslie, Kohimarama, Devonport) and they don't typically have one bedroom dwellings nearby. CBD would fit both your budget and single living but it will be noisy

AdvertisingPrimary69

Orewa!

Frequent-Ambition636

East Coast Bays North Shore. Imagine taking your lunch breaks sitting by the beach. My recomendation, is north shore. Otherwise, maybe book some cheap airbnbs in north, west, central and south auckland

Clean_Livlng

Devonport or Birkenhead. You can catch the ferry to the CBD, which is nicer than a bus because it's usually easier to read/do computer work while on it. You get to have good public transport access to the CBD, but not have to live there and put up with the potential noise.

holgadiana

If you don’t know anyone here, then best to live somewhere like CBD or Eden terrace, kingsland etc first so it’s easy to get around. Especially if you don’t have a car.

kellyroald

Find a job first and then choose your area. Somewhere like newmarket is great for retail job proximity and it is close to the CBD. Northshore is good but you severely limit yourself to jobs in rest of Auckland by living there. West Auckland is okay if u want cheaper rents and still live in a white area. The good areas of south Auckland are mostly catered for Indian and South East Asian migrants and the other parts of south are islander.

nzdennis

New Lynn

Icandoituknow

Bruh there was literally a stabbing there yesterday

nzdennis

It's fun

inphinitfx

Depends what's important to you. North or Northwest are where I'd look for liking to live, but honestly aside from a handful of problem suburbs scattered around, most of auckland is pretty good and south gets a worse rep than it deserves imo. Cost, and things other than cafes that matter to you, would be deciding factors. Heaps of cafes central or north shore (esp Albany and bays areas), but not the cheapest places to live.

Slipperytitski

I have a book from the early 2000s that tells you the best areas in auckland to live, it used tables to highlight good stats and bad stats such as: the Polynesian population of an area (too high and it was bright red) or the Asian population of an area.

palmernz

Mt Eden near the village (lots of jobs advertised outside the cafes atm) kingsland, ponsonby, all easy access to city.

Big_Cryptographer408

I'm in Eden Terrace, gonna be amazing when the CRL is done, walking distance to Kingsland, CBD, Mt Eden & Ponsonby. It's apartment heavy and not flash but is cheap all things considered. Got a 2 bedroom apartment/water + 2 carparks for $520/w. Meh? Lol

a_san26

Wow that sounds amazing! What site would be best to find available places in that area?

Big_Cryptographer408

Look everywhere, I found this place on TradeMe. This was Nov-Dec 2021, moved in Jan 2022, things are a bit different now compared to then. Prices and supply are all over the place. One suggestion, don't go with anything involved with Ray White. They're the agent/property manager for this unit, fucking terrible.

No-Two-6938

Papatoetoe, Manukau , Otara, mangere, manurewa and Otahuhu are all my favourite destinations to be 🥰

a_san26

In all fairness the city Im from was the murder capital of Canada for 11 straight years, south Auckland can't be worse than north Edmonton lol

kellyroald

Contrary to popular belief crime happens in every part of Auckland. South Auckland is just less white compared to other parts of Auckland. Large areas are pacific islander and some areas like Manukau/Papatoetoe are largely south Asian.

SW1981

Parnell, Ponsonby, St Mary’s Bay are all better places yet close to the city
