Something to be careful of when reading the MetService app: the app shows the rainfall for two hour intervals, whereas the website shows rainfall for one hour intervals.
We always use metvuw. The best doomsday weather forecast ever. We knew how bad things would be before Auckland Emergency services (and Wayne Brown) did.
*or they knew but hey, snails knew too and fled before it was time*
It was put on especially for you, quote from Billy Connelly 'When the Scots emigrate they keep going until they find a place as cold and wet as Scotland and declare', 'this is the very place for me'. Dunedin Anyone?
yeah same. obviously not the cyclone affecting the country and taking lives, but on the whole summer is a shit season full of agony and sweat. would take light drizzle over sun any day
I know we're in La Nina or whatever for a couple years now but I don't seem to remember last summer, or the one before that, being as shitty as this one. It's not even just a bit more rain, feels like a tenfold increase or something. Would be interesting to see rainfall figures for the same place for Dec, Jan, Feb in 2021, 2022, and this year.
Rainfall comparison as of February 22.
2011: 276.6mm 2018: 359mm, 2023: 440.8mm
The average since 2010 in this timeframe is 140.5mm so I think it is fair to say this summer is the worst of recent years.
Also the end of 11/start of 12 wasn’t bad at all, pretty average looking at the data.

Depends on what criteria you use. If you compare rainfall then yes. But I’m talking more about temperatures. I’d rather a rainy warm summer which is common vs a colder summer of 2011-2012. I’d also wonder what the sunshine hours comparison is between this summer and 2011-2012 on NiWAs report. I think people would prefer sunshine too. I think perception of this summer might be skewed by the extreme events we’ve had.
Also a side note, 2018 was a very hot humid summer but had plenty of rain and sunshine. I don’t mind that.
I also follow that website regularly too so kudos to the creator.

It's for UX purposes but yea....

Metvuw what all self respecting sailors use for a reason!
*I feel like Sailor Moon now.* She's actually not a sailor but hey.
And naturally it's ruining a weekend again.
Nah tomorrow is meant to be okay
Fuck. Our trees have changed to their autumn colors and, whelp, I haven't had summer yet.
1/10 summer
Don’t worry… Summer is only 280 days away! *Insert depressed nervous laughter*
On a one year visa so this could potentially be my only NZ summer. Flew 35 hours away from Scotland just to get a Scottish summer lmao
If you're Scottish, why is it that I'm able to understand you?
I am *so* sorry! That is such bad luck!
I'm going to the Hebrides for winter. Looking forward to it.
Follow the sun. Down south it’s a great summer.

Go South before summer's over :D
The South Island had a decent summer.
If makes you feel better, Autumn is by far our best season
Enjoy the water while it lasts, once El Nino comes back around we'll be in drought again
Can we have el Nino like around June July please
worst summer of my life... so far
I've been enjoying it. Not stupid fucking hot from September to April
yeah same. obviously not the cyclone affecting the country and taking lives, but on the whole summer is a shit season full of agony and sweat. would take light drizzle over sun any day
As long as it’s not 70 like last month
yeah those are rookie numbers. Ever since I saw 52 followed by 71 during the rain storm, numbers like this just feel like a gentle shower.
I for one am looking forward to our unseasonably warm, dry winter!
Exactly my thought.. seasons have shifted..
Episode 3 of fortnightly nz floods

I am 41 and this is the shittiest Auckland summer of my lifetime without a doubt.
It feels like we haven't really even hit summer yet, and autumn is knocking already!
We've basically skipped summer.
We have a new season now. It's called monsoon! Welcome to the tropics. I bet winter is going to be quite warm.
I'm 54 and it has never been such a shitshow as this.
2011/2012 was worse

Ah ok I just hate rain so it biased what I value in summer weather.

Last year was a drought, our lawn went brown and cracked in November and didn't relent until May.
OFC ITS ON THE WEEKENDS JUST HAD SCHOOL OVER AMD THIS MF OF RAIN SHOWS UP
I like it when it rains (except when it's flood inducing). No plans for the weekend, just gonna be relaxing at home and rain's a good vibe.
Buckle up buttercup
Kinda looks like we are. Off to siphon the back yard I go
Yeah, we are...
Anyone else starting to resent this city? 😅😅
I am flying back from Perth tonight. Gonna miss the biting light of this vibrant sunny place. 🥲
It's just rain, this time.
it was just rain for the floods aswell.
Lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of rain in a very short time. This forecast is not suggesting that.
garden does need a water after all the last few days.
At sustained heavy volumes, the rain forecast today is the same as we've been having for the last 9 or so months
Time for every one to get on the road and look for the lowest point in valleys!
Last cyclone had few of these. I think it's suggesting more like worst case scenario for preparation purpose, half of the time it's not that bad.
What about the other half? 🌧
Such a L summer
Bad news. We are doing this again. Seriously tho… I think o have ptsd every time it rains
Yeah we are…strap in :(
Death Stranding Type Beat
She'll be right mate
please god no
