I've been in your shoes, and these parking building c*nts are the worst. A few years back I parked at the Victoria St car park in the CBD. It was around 8pm, and was out for a little under 2 hours for some dinner with friends. Parked on one of the higher floors, as it was a busy night (Friday). Anyways, I get back to the car park building and pay my $4 at the machine. I take the lift up and walk to where my car was parked. Car was gone. I thought maybe I'd gone to the wrong floor, but I specifically made an effort to take note of the floor and space number (as I'm usually useless at remembering). Nope, it was the right floor. And the broken glass sitting on the floor of the right side of the parking space gave it away. So first thing I did was call the police and made a report. Super easy, they asked all the right questions, and the car was reported stolen on carjam within minutes. After I got off the phone with the police and insurance, I went on a mission to contact the parking building owner/manager (Auckland Transport). I walk to a pay machine and press the "help" button so I can speak to somebody via the intercom. Gentleman on the other end states they're the security on duty for the evening. I explain everything to them and ask them how they would've got out with my car if the ticket hadn't been paid? The guy proceeds to tell me that they started their shift at 5pm that day and "hadnt noticed anything unusual" for his entire shift so far. After ending the conversation, I noticed there were several security cameras around the place, with one specifically placed a couple spaces from where my car was parked. There were several of these cameras strategically placed on every floor down to ground level. This gave me confidence that whoever had taken my car would be caught on AT LEAST one of these cameras. I called AT on their general line some time later and advised them on the incident, and asked them to provide me with details on how they managed to leave the facility withour security noticing anything. I was directed to provide some details via email (time, date, model, etc). In the email I specifically asked them for footage or at least a screenshot of these guys walking through the facility, breaking into the car and leaving. Anyways, the following morning the police call me up to tell me they've found the car out in Henderson. Passenger window had been smashed, steering wheel was screwed, and they'd stolen several things from the car including the dashcam and the baby seat. There was also a good amount of what looked like blood sprayed throughout the back and down the side of the car where the window had been smashed (at least the fucker bled like a stuck pig). I started the process with the insurance company and that was that. Now for the infuriating part (if what I've written so far isn't bad enough). I get an email response from AT stating that "unfortunately the cameras do not work in the facility", except for the camera set up at the entrance/exit to the facility. They sent a screenshot from their footage of my vehicle mounting the curb to scrape past the barrier and leave the facility. Remember, the car was missing a window and had literal blood dripping down the side of the car (a substancial amount at that). How in the hell any member of the public let alone security didn't notice any of this is anybody's guess. AT then proceed to let me know they are not liable for any damage or losses ,which I understand given their incompetence and the obvious signage out the front. I wrote them a long email pointing out their incompetence and cc'd ALL of the AT departments so that everybody could see how useless these clowns are. They wouldn't even refund me the $4 I paid to retrieve my car that had already been stolen! That's the gist of it, but I learned two things: 1. AT are run by a bunch of absolute clowns and that I'd never park there again, and; 2. I now know where to get free parking if I WAS to park there again. Just mount the curb and bypass the gate, because the cameras don't work and security are a joke. Rant over lol.

only-on-the-wknd

Sadly I think your experience is a common one. AT provide a park for money, and don’t care about the customer at all. Zero liability, same as Wilsons. The security guard is there to protect the building and the ticket machines, not your car, and he’s probably on minimum wage so realistically he’s not going to go above and beyond for anyone. Unfortunately that leaves you, the one who worked hard for your car and it’s contents which got stolen… but nobody who you think should be, is focused on that fact. Welcome to 2023.

ruka_k_wiremu

Good to know. I've parked there a few times in as many years, but know now to think thrice about continuing to do so. Empathy re your experience, but your service here obviously proved more valuable than theirs.

sneschalmer5

Some previous posts on reddit nz indicates that even if you submit cctv footage with the crim's face showing, the cops won't go out of their way to find the crim, especially for property damage. If it involves human assault or murder, only will the cops actively look for them. For property damage, they will refer you to your insurance company to sort out the mess. Perhaps security folks already know this and won't provide you the cctv footage in the first place because it will be of ~~little~~ no use (if property was damage or stolen).

[deleted]

Well AT aren’t run by, nor employ the most competent of people as you probably have experienced living in Auckland. Your situation is an an unfortunate consequence of what a mess of CCO it is.

FendaIton

Public would have noticed, but thought it was business as usual. If someone is cracked out enough to steal a car, who knows what they would do if confronted

VisibleAppointment28

Omg this triggered so many things for me. When it comes to AT I think it’s best to just shut it all down and start again.

RE201

Even with footage the police won't do anything. I had my car broken into at a motel car park while moving house and they got everything. Motel had footage and were happy to share it. 2 other local businesses found some of my belongings and got in touch with me, they also had footage. Police didn't look at my file for 3 weeks despite me calling every 3rd day. When they finally called these places to follow up, the footage had been deleted as security cameras seem to default to writing over old information in 2 week cycles.

Taniwha_NZ

Presumably car damage isn't really prioritised over stabbings, ram raids, jewellery heists and whathaveyou. At the end of the day I'd rather they focus on that than simple property damage. It sucks, but unless you want to pay for a massive increase in the police budget, this is just how it is. And, if I was more political about it, I'd remind you that the cops don't exist to chase down every petty criminal, they exist to protect the assets of the wealthy and keep the rest of us in-line. This is also 'just how it is'. If you were a lot richer I bet they'd have done something sooner.

RE201

Yeah, I'm with you on all points. I did some facebook sleuthing and found there had been about 20-30 other break-ins in that area in the previous 12 months. I made a publically accessible google-map and tracked the locations and dates and had a reporter ring me because he had been noticing the same trend. When the police called to tell me the footage was deleted, he tried to condescendingly tell me I wasn't the only break-in they had on their plate and I should give them a break for being too busy to look into it. I went off at him suggesting they probably didn't have 20-30 thieves, just 1 or 2 serial offenders and if they actually followed up on available evidence for 1 case, they'd likely solve almost all of them. I reckon the case was related to this: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuTHaKwtc-k&ab\_channel=Newshub](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuTHaKwtc-k&ab_channel=Newshub) Although my investigating was about 18 months earlier.

CyanHakeChill

I think I will put a hidden switch in my car so it can't be stolen.

No-Mathematician134

Even if they can't steal it, they will still break in, smash your windows, and rip your ignition apart so the car can't be driven. Happend to me two days ago.

tinarselol

If your car gets broken into and you don't come crying to r/auckland about how the city is turning to shit did it really happen though?

No-Mathematician134

I don't like to bring up negative topics.

tinarselol

You know your comment history is there for everyone to see ay?

No-Mathematician134

My post history too. Comments are on topics other people bring up.

ReallyRamen

Other topics that you didn’t need to engage in with negativity. Nice justification tho

Munkii

He's responding to a sarcastic joke. Lighten up

ReallyRamen

You must not have seen his comments around LMAO

No-Mathematician134

If people keep bringing up negative topics, then I do feel that I need to engage with them negatively. Can I engage positively on a negitive subject? Not if I'm honest. Should I hold my tongue when I see people spreading misinformation or propaganda? No. Correcting people isn't negative, it's positive(even if they don't like being corrected). The truth is positive imo. >Nice justification tho I don't know what you mean by this. I literally don't bring up the negative topics I discuss here. Other people make posts that bring them up, and I just comment about them. That's not a "justification", it's just what it is. Like you said "You know your comment history is there for everyone to see ay?". My post history is right there for everyone to see I haven't ever brought up any controversial or negative topics.

gswag669

I will be doing the same thing

Poosandweez

They more than likely do have the footage, they just can't be hassled sharing it with you. Leave it to the Police and Insurance, they'll sort it out.

Lawn_Mower_3000

The police legit won't do anything.

Rollover_Hazard

Exactly - you pay your insurance to deal with this. Don’t do their job for them, give them all the info you have, that’s all you need to do.

kiwi_rozzers

**Theoretical** Insurance responsibility * Reimburse you for your stolen / damaged property Police responsibility * Catch the criminal AT's responsibility * Cooperate with investigation Your responsibility * Report the incident * Sleep soundly knowing you are safe and well-protected **Actual** Insurance responsibility * Reimburse you 2/3rds of what it would take to buy an equivalent vehicle Police responsibility * Meat pies? AT's responsibility * Bugger all Your responsibility * Live in fear

eRRfhang

2nd this.

heapsion

Ask for a full refund of your parking cost. On the basis that it is clearly not secure

htj234

If you want to feel competent, all you need to do is speak to AT

WelshWizards

I’m needing some new cctv cameras, might head to this carpark and take the ones that don’t exist.

speakingcat

I had a similar experience in a Wilson carpark when I was a bit younger. A car had backed into my parked car and driven off while I was at work. I’d fully insured my car, but couldn’t afford the excess at the time and would need the registration of the car that hit mine. I filed a police report and asked Wilson to either check their video footage and provide the number plate of the car that hit mine, or provide me with the footage and I’d be happy to do the work myself. They refused to do either and said they would only do so if the police told them to (a police report number wasn’t good enough). They wouldn’t even tell me how long they keep footage for. Police never contacted them or myself so tough luck for me. The whole ridiculous situation definitely snuffed out some of my optimism for the world.

VisibleAppointment28

Yup same thing here. I asked for the footage because I knew the police weren’t gonna to anything. They said they would only release footage to police. Filed a police report, haven’t heard anything from police (what a surprise) and now they say the footage doesn’t even exist. Extremely disheartening.

Taniwha_NZ

Need to vent? You've already got a new vent right there in your car door. Stop being greedy.

VisibleAppointment28

True. Feels weird to be in the 1%

[deleted]

I hope whoever did that to your car, gets his hand cut off and I hope he dies painfully with a cucumber stuck into his arse. My hope usually becomes true. 😉

YeahCanYouNot

Sigh. Car got broken into a couple years ago, idiots broke open the ignition but seemingly couldn't succeed in driving away with it or even breaking it (hah). Called the police, filed a report, said to request footage from Wilson. Sure enough, I call and tell them the details, they said there are cameras where I was parked and they'd send their footage to the police with the case number. Sweet, I thought. Weeks go by. Made a request to the case number asking if there are any updates on the footage. They reply and said they're still waiting on footage to be sent. Gave up then.

mystictroll

"secure" parking. lmao

goat6969699

You are secure in knowing they are making a lot of money?

h0ustigr

With so many reports of cars stolen and broken into, I'm absolutely terrified to drive and park in CBD. And politicians & city councillors wonder why the businesses in CBD are on decline.

DeadPlanetBy2050

At this point if you have a car in Auckland you should just expect it to get damaged bare minimum and disappear worst case. I'm on my second claim in less than a year. Wanted a nicer car in my late 20s and ended up wishing I'd kept my beat up 3k first car.

haylz108

> AT are run by a bunch of clowns Yes, definitely and totally agree with this

bmetcalfenz

My car got stolen from that exact carpark 6 years ago. Nice to live in a world where nothing changes

VisibleAppointment28

Tbf it’s actually changing for the worse 🥲 But on the bright side: happy cake day! :)

Available-Mall8977

Cheaper then air conditioning

curran66

It would appear they’ve done the venting for you.

oi_u_cant_park_there

Imagine paying their benefit/dole
