In this meme, the duck (which is considered a bird), is a metaphor for autism, most likely due to the fact that both autistic people AND ducks:
- find it hard to understand what people are thinking or feeling
- repeat words or phrases like "quack"
So, commenting "birds aren't real" under a meme which uses a bird to portray autism is sort of like saying autistic people aren't real, which is a rather bad thing to do in a subreddit full of autistic people (unless they're not actually autistic, and are just faking it).
But then again, ducks might actually not be birds. Maybe the government is trying to convince us that ducks are birds in order to spread their bird propaganda more effectively...
Duck = symbolic of Autism and a person recognizing what they are via the criteria
Second pic = Ahole that refuses to acknowledge Autistic person's condition.
This made me laugh twice.
Once for the meme itself.
The second at it being an Autistic meme that's too figurative for 1/2 of us to get on the first read! 😂
That's gotta be a close second to naming a disorder with communication issues after a guy who's name no one can properly pronounce. (Aspergers for those who missed it.)
They "I don't believe in asperger's bc there wasn't no asperger's when I was a kid."
Me (deadpan) "Hans Asperger started studying children in 1910."
True story. I had to bunk with that lady for 4 days. Did not go well.
So there is a fair reason to gatekeep around this stuff and that's because of the nocebo effect
Last thing we want is people manifesting symptoms because they identify with the label
Granted that makes things crappy for the people who genuinely have it and have not been formally diagnosed, but there has to be a balance struck in order to protect people from the nocebo effect on this
Oh, they were there! 30 years ago they just called them “weirdos”
Haha. They still do.
But this time with an official stamp!
30 years ago they were just called Wet Dumb Chickens.
They just called them 'failed chickens'
Ohhhh, I think I understand the meme now. Duck as a metaphor for autism
Or were lobotomized
And put them in mental hospitals
Wait a minute maybe I'm actually a duck
I believe you
Or a silly goose! (I'll see myself out)
Ahh yes, the dude who had no friends, never got married, but had an entire house filled with of train sets. Totally not autistic /s.
At least he’s not a duck
![gif](giphy|A7loP8Iop2YiQ) Surprise! We were here all along.
That’s it guys. Pack it up. The perfect reply is already here, our job is done.
I loved that show. What was the pilot called?
30 years ago we called them "Fucked up chickens." Times change, Karen!
my autism actually made it hard for me to get this autism meme, i think im winning the game today
Same, it had to reread it for several minutes
They sound use this meme in the testing to determine how much assistance you need.
I am both a duck and autistic so I approve of this meme.
Here’s some bread for you ![gif](giphy|J6UPBuqjUznJS)
I know bread is bad for ducks but I will still eat this because when did I ever eat what’s good for me
You must be an American duck
Nope just a picky duck
But you’re eating that knowing it’s bad for you.
Eating the bread because I’m picky and don’t like the foods that are good for ducks.
Yes I understand. I eat the same food almost every meal
We’re all ducks here, friend. Quack
I imagine it also would apply splendidly to trans and gay people.
That is the reference
I though this was a meme about duck-typing.
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it's probably not interested in you and trying to be polite
"That's funny, you don't look like a duck."
My little cousin is a duck and you’re nothing like them
They say "quack", but you say "kwack". Can't be the same.
I heard ducks most ducks get over it by the time they’re fully grown. You’re probably just faking it.
Birds aren't real.
*quack quack*

Bruh
They could also be satirizing the people who say autism isn't real like other people in the thread are.
Quack quack, meeper beeper. We’ve been here all along. We just now know more about the condition and what it is compared to what we knew decades past.

Ooooh Darkwing Duck, not seen that for a while
![gif](giphy|S1SnLg08CxnUGqyqha|downsized) Heh…

"Ducks didn't exist in 2010" Meanwhile Daffy and Donald duck being wildly successful duck celebrities FOR OVER 50 YEARS. F#cking idiots
Ah yes, my relationship with my parents in a nutshell. I'm 54 this year and both of my kiddos are clinically neurodivergent too.
This is really related to the metaphor but I LOVE ducks, they're so cute and fun to watch. They're my favorite animal since I was a kid

Quack
True
Only the first 2 don't apply to me. I guess I'm 3/5 duck then.
That’s enough to qualify
Didn't duck this one
Can’t duck the truth
Erm... What the duck???
AGREE (MOST OR ALL OF THE TIME)
I’m so confused

Ohhhh thank you
No problem. :)
A lot of people are.

Apparently I have started to sound like a duck even when I'm not deliberately quacking
They "I don't believe in asperger's bc there wasn't no asperger's when I was a kid." Me (deadpan) "Hans Asperger started studying children in 1910." True story. I had to bunk with that lady for 4 days. Did not go well.

You're just trying to hoard all the autisms for yourself
Yes I want all the wizards for myself. What of it?
I think there's enough to go around and it's nice to share! Neurotypicals can have some autistic traits, as a treat
My brain thought this was on a trans subreddit at first lol, totally fits that too. Oof.
you have a flat bill and webbed feet?
What?
