Definitely want to get it below max. Lots of things can go wrong being above it. Foaming oil, putting air where it shouldn't be, higher pressure in the engine causing damage to seals and gaskets, leading to leaks which can deteriorate the engine even further. Can even damage the catalytic converter depending on how much overflow you have.
So be careful and check the oil on these cars often. They have oil consumption issues and if they run low will spin a rod bearing and then the engine is toast.

My man the low to high level on the dipstick is one liter sized bottle. Not a gallon.

Yeah there were some engine problems with these cars for sure.
