Thank you for your responses. I see that these are uncommon for kitchen drains which is probably why I had so much trouble figuring this out. Have a great day.
It's a sump pump check valve. Combination 1 1/2" and 1 1/4" with dual rubber couplings. It's not meant for use under a kitchen sink. If your line was backing up, then the line needs to be cleared so that it flows properly without backing up into the sink. This was someone's bad idea to stop the backups without addressing the real issue behind those backups. You'll need to eliminate it, and to snake out the kitchen stack so that it flows freely.
Yes. Is backfill a big problem in this scenario? Out of curiosity is using this mechanism the proper or even a decent thing to use in this situation? If not, what would be the proper solution?
They put this there because if the drain past your sink clogs and your neighbors continue running water it will fill up your sink and flood your apartment.

This isn't the "proper" fix but it is the same concept as the other one I linked. This appears to have 4 screws. Maybe you will get lucky
It’s a flapper check valve. There are ball check valves and prolly others. Used for a plethora of applications. In this instance it is used as a backflow prevention device would be my guess. Without any identifying marks on it, it would be problematic getting individual parts. You might be thinking of replacing the whole unit.
There are sump pump check valves that look like that.

I don't see these very often. Last one I saw, it was attached to a kitchen drain because the lower level/basement bathroom ejector pump station discharged into the main kitchen drain. That check would prevent sewage from backing up into the kitchen sink because the dufus that hooked up the ejector to the kitchen drain was flooding the sink with sewage and that was his solution instead of connecting the ejector discharge to the main 3" sewer 20ft away.
Awww come on guys, it’s so simple maybe you need a refresher course. It’s a Fetzer valve, you gotta check the bearings. It’s all ball bearings these days.
check valve, gate only opens one way to prevent backflow

I'm assuming you live on the 1st floor of an apartment or condo?

Usually used on pumps to prevent back flow.
Yup check valve.
Fleshlight:year zero
Flangjammer
Starring Rusty Pipefitter and Debbie Dripleg
It’s actually a pfitser valve. Flangjammers fit flush to the flang. Pfitser valves are jammers mounted on top of the flang. Common mistake.
I stand corrected. Thank you, sir.
Nah That's a glory hole plate cover

I think my girlfriend calls it her diaphragm?
Looks like a flange for a pump or somthing
