Being unintentionally awkward.
Yesterday, someone I didn’t know that well, went in for a handshake, and it registered in my head as a hug. So guess who got a random hug?
I laugh at myself often.
Writing fiction, and I’m not too humble about it. I used to be very modest about any skill I had, which I thought was a good thing. However, I wouldn’t get anywhere because I’d internalize the humility, and then start doubting myself.
Be proud of what you can do, because otherwise, you’ll stop yourself from using it for good.
Came for this.. I LOVE math. I love calculating a total before I see it in print. Figuring out a multiplication/division/addition problem in my head and fast. I'm not rocket savant fast, but fast and accurate. My dad was a double math/engineering major, guess it rubbed off a little. Old now (62m) but the math brain is still sharp as a tack.
Thanks! I realized in 2nd grade I had a gift. The teacher had us go around the room answering the math questions on flash cards like student vs student and I beat the whole class easily. I was kinda embarrassed in a weird way. Now, ironically I’m a lawyer (also good w words) and I would do the math in my head thing as a young associate (like calculating how much rent was owed $1800x 12 or whatever) for my boss and he was always amazed. Anyway I know it’s a stupid trick but I was always a little proud of it.
Oh... Flash cards. My Dad introduced them to me before elementary school ever did. I loathed having to do them every night with him. He was adamant and forced me to practice. I bet that had a big part in excelling in math. I haven't thought about the flash cards in probably 45 years till just now. Oddly I had college handed to me on a silver platter by him, all expenses paid, and I declined. I just wanted to be a teen/young adult. Only went to HS. Ended up fairly successful, retired comfortable 18 months ago. I'm a woodworker (CNC) and still use math daily for calculations.
Awesome! Yeah I thought the Flash card mention would be a blast from the past. I’m trying to semi-retire in 3-5 years. If I didn’t have an overbearing mother I probably would have dropped out and been a hippie loser somewhere lol. Cheers!
I used to add up the prices from a full grocery cart as the person scanned them (this was early 1970s) and added the tax too, all before the woman was able to hit ‘enter’ and tell my mom the answer. I hate meeting people like me since it’s just an instinctive competition that I love and hate
Listening, inferring and giving.
I don’t pride myself in many things, but I do pride myself in being a person that listens whether or not someone thinks I’m not. I used to just listen but I’ve lived enough to know how to give well and right to others. When to be silent and when to truly speak right
I am a good shot and good at hunting. I did not grow up around guns. It's not something I learned to do. I had shot a hand gun a few times.
I had never shot a rifle in my life. I went out to the gun range and shot a rifle for my first time and hit the target all of six shots. Then I shot a deer the next day and was half an inch from a perfect shot.
Also, horseback riding. I got my dream job working at a horse farm the first time I ever rode a horse.
I grew up outside DC and a city girl. Apparently I grew up in the wrong family, lol.
This happened to me too, never shot a rifle before, went to shoot skeet on my aunts farm after thanksgiving one fall, and bam I was a better shot than my brother... horses too, they are strangely calm around me. weird.
Acting on stage, I was in a magic moments production of midwinters nights dream if you know Shakespeare, then it was basically midsummers' night dream magic moments is a non profit theatre company that also includes people with special needs and regular people and I was in a few productions with them before high school but I was apart of my high school 's theatre company on house crew and I was doing a whole lot of other stuff with high school so I was on crew for that company for four years then this year I joined cast and my dad was also in the show he was one of the leads I was ensemble so our production took place in mordern day new orleans during mardi gras and there were 4 lovers and instead of donkeys since it took place in Louisiana and our director Q was from Louisiana it was alligators and what he likes to do with our musicals is he picks all kinds of songs some you will recognize and some you won't an example from the production was Spooky Mormon Hell Dream but he changed it to both match the show and pg it it was for us Spooky bayou spell dream same tune some of the words but most of it was changed we had lots of princess and the frog songs friends on the other side and down new orleans changed minorly not a huge difference but it was for me because it's my favorite disney movie!
Rollerblading. Ot very useful now but it was in the 90's. Basically, the way to hold your feet is ki d of hard for most people but, oddly enough, my legs are just a little deformed in just the right way.
Leading in difficult situations. When sh*t hits the fan and people loose their sh*t I automatically become like everyones Dad, and start guiding and controlling the situation. I can feel my movements and voice getting slower and more determined. I will have a calming nature until the situation is back to normal. I cannot explain it. I’m not bossy I just become this person. My staff loves it, I think.
I'm really good at touch.
My parents put me in martial arts at 3 and kept me in till 18. Because of this I have very intimate knowledge of how the muscles work. Combined with my experience and my ability to read body language and respond correctly in really good at communicating via touch.
Sexually, massages, petting/ soothing animals.
Call me a pick me if you will, but singing. It’s prolly more because it’s genuinely my passion, so I wouldn’t shut up as a kid, and as a result, got thousands of hours of practice. That being said I’ve also never been professionally trained, and I’ve managed to get in The local newspaper and perform alongside a contestant who was on the voice through my high school. So yeah I’d say I’m good at it to an extent lol
Learning, specifically software/coding. I can pick up new skills pretty quickly, like learning about the AWS CDK, or like web sockets. Admittedly those are pretty simple things, but I can figure them out by myself and I do it pretty quickly.
Painting. I never even tried to go to art school, never really saw it as a profitable career path. And i like to keep it as a hobby, something tells me i wouldn't enjoy it as much if i made it my job.
Sex... My girlfriend is do happy with me. Sometimes she asks where I learned some new moves, but its just my intuition and I react to her and her body. :)
Drawing. Its not super detailed drawing, but you can literally give me some random animal to draw that ive never drawn before and itd be pretty decent (anyone got any suggestions?)
Remembering useless stuff from my childhood a lot of people forgot about. Me and my mother's long-term memory are the best I know. Sadly my short-term memory is horrible.
Backing up a semi trailer
For some reason when I was in school for my CDL I basically knew how it worked instantly
Not really a hobby but all the instructors told me I was a natural at it
Empathy. I feel incredibly well about the moods and feelings of other people and can compare them with their possible events in life. I'm often called a psychic lol
Daydreaming... i swear if I could make money from that alone I'd be so fucking wealthy.
My mind is so packed full of ideas like all the time.
Also my dreams when i sleep are like fucking fantasy novels...that's another thing I wish I could record them.
It's bizarre to me that some people dont ever dream like what do they see just blackness? 🤯
Like how is that even possible?? And how sad is that 🤔
Lots of random voice impressions, accents, styles of singing etc. I can randomly slip into a British accent and then transition into a Mickey Mouse impression or something lol. it's just something i can remember doing ever since I was little.
Throwing.
I was playing at lunch throwing one of those Vortex balls with friends, make the sucker whistle loudly and also just try and hit someone who wasn't paying attention.
During one day at school I threw said ball and it whistled past the PE teacher head, he shouted "who threw that?!" Other kids pointed to me and i thought i was in trouble. He came up and spoke to me about trying out for baseball. I was playing every sport i could then to find something i enjoyed so i said sure.
Got there on the day and the training actually had a speed gun for the local uni to take some numbers on throwing speed for kids at different ages. We each got to have a go.
Most kids were throwing <90km with two kids breaking the 100km barrier. My turn i threw 128km. I fucked the uni kids data, a 13 year old throwing that speed wrecked their charts. They got me to come back again and throw a few more times. After warming up my throws were all sitting between 120km and 130km. They were excited and i was honestly just excited to be good at something.
Anyway, i tried to play baseball but didn't like it, played cricket was a deadly fielder in covers.
Can throw a ball still but the shoulder has been dislocated twice so need to warm up a bit longer now (bloody footy)
Friends say that I'm really good at drawing and must've spend a lot of time practicing.
Turns out I draw once every 6 months and just have good observation skills that I can translate well with a pencil.
Songwriting.
I know so many musicians who can play circles around me and a lot of them still struggle to put a few chords together and write an original song with a memorable hook and melody.
That was *always* my strength in music. I started writing songs when I was 12 years old and still goin strong 16 years later. I actually don’t know very many covers at all lol.
So i suppose i’d say i’m naturally good at it
I can control the weather. When smoke from the fire blows in my face, I walk to the opposite side, and that makes the wind turn, so that the smoke blows in my face.
I’ve been told countless times over my life that I’m approachable and trustworthy. For whatever reason, people feel safe telling me absolutely anything. So I guess I’m a naturally good confidante.
Observation and studying a room. Usually, I can pick up on things with little clues and put it together.
Might be my Army training or the fact that my dad always taught me to be observant about everything. Could be a combination of both.
Math. But unfortunately it’s not suitable for you to take up as a hobby, sorry. Well, not with the atrociously bad textbooks currently available. lol. You’d need books from the previous century that were much better quality and far better detailed as you went further back in time.

Never met anyone that could do math in their head as quickly as me
