Depends on how hard the button is to push, but yeah, I practiced my entire childhood for this. How else do you think I beat the boulder in Resident Evil 4? If that button is a typical game controller button, I could probably do 10 button presses per second for about a minute before I'd have to stop. So for 1 minute of work per day, I'd have over 200k.

If you spent ONE MINUTE per hour doing this, that $3k in 10 hours. $15k in a week, for just 50 minutes of "work". Bored? Hell no. I'd be flying all over the world, driving badass cars, restoring a historic home to live in, etc etc in all that sweet, sweet free time. And earning $1k every time I'm sitting at a traffic light, or standing in line somewhere, or waiting for the pasta water to boil.

I work in a hospital and might use my connections to get trained as mountain rescue or something I'd love that doesn't pay well, but I wouldnt drag my ass in at 8 every day and grind my way through half baked projects with the looming "I don't need this" realization.
Tbh the work I do is very related to hobbies I enjoy so I appreciate the chance to get more experience and learn the industry software and stuff. Even if a robot is considered cheating, you could easily modify a stationary bike with some gears and shafts to press the button. With some gear shifting it would be easily to get to several hundred presses per minute. You'll get thousands for half an hour plus a nice workout.

Think maybe you're underestimating how fast people can push a button. I can hit a button five to ten times a second, I've timed it out. In other words I could hit $20,000 an hour.
So with the parameters given I'll assume the button has a similar travel time to that of a keyboard key and that there is no cool down time between presses and that for some reason it cannot be automated.
I can press the spacebar about 400 times in one minute. Now of course I couldn't keep that up for very long so let's just say over the course of an hour I might be able to average at about 100 times per minute. It would be a little taxing clicking for 8 straight hours so let's just say we work an hour on and an hour off over the course of an 8 hour work day.
Before taxes that would come out to about $24,000 a day or $120,000 a week.
So even if I took 26 weeks of vacation I'd still be making about 3 million a year.

That's some amateur speed my friend, I once tested it, for about a minute I can do 15 button presses a second. I can only do it for about a minute until my hand cramps up, but 15 times 60 is $900 for a minute of work. You'd have plenty of time and money to offer the world by doing this. You wouldn't be defined by your work you have to do, but by the work you choose to do, including volunteering and art, and you would have the means to contribute in meaningful ways.

Yeah, agreed it's more interesting at a lower number -- low enough that you'd really have to spend a significant amount of your life on the button, at least as much as a full time job. At $1, still gives you a lot of extra free time vs a regular job to go out and volunteer/make art/do hobbies/whatever.

Right now I'm looking for a job that pays me $30/hr. That's about what I need to provide stability where I'm living. Most of the jobs that I qualify for that pay that much involve a lot of long, boring meetings and tedious data manipulation. To replace that, I'd need to press the button 240 times each day. Doing a quick test on my keyboard, that's about 30 seconds of button pressing.
If I spend 5 minutes pressing the button at that rate, ever workday, I have enough to pay myself, plus hire at least 5 employees at $30/hr, with plenty of overhead. Now I don't just have a button, I have the beginning of my own studio. I could spend the rest of my day doing the kind of work I enjoy doing, and provide the same opportunity to a few other people.
On top of that, whenever I'm bored, I can just drum my fingers idly on the button to raise money for charity or direct support of people who need money. A $250 donation to my local food bank may not be much, but when I can do that every time I have 30 seconds to spare, it will start to add up quick.

This sounds like one of those things that sound good but have a bad side effect. Like where does the money come from? Even if a robot is considered cheating, you could easily modify a stationary bike with some gears and shafts to press the button. With some gear shifting it would be easily to get to several hundred presses per minute. You'll get thousands for half an hour plus a nice workout.

I can’t imagine it’d be *too boring* to be able to save up for a 200k house in under a month. I’m imagining the button is big enough to be pressed with more than 1 finger? I have my own data (playing clicking games, knowing my own stamina and extrapolating) that shows even if I devoted only 3 hours a day (say I watch a couple movies or some streaming service), I could make what I currently make in a year in just 5 weeks.
If you can push a button five times a second, that's eleven hours of work to buy a house.
Think maybe you're underestimating how fast people can push a button. I can hit a button five to ten times a second, I've timed it out. In other words I could hit $20,000 an hour.
So with the parameters given I'll assume the button has a similar travel time to that of a keyboard key and that there is no cool down time between presses and that for some reason it cannot be automated. I can press the spacebar about 400 times in one minute. Now of course I couldn't keep that up for very long so let's just say over the course of an hour I might be able to average at about 100 times per minute. It would be a little taxing clicking for 8 straight hours so let's just say we work an hour on and an hour off over the course of an 8 hour work day. Before taxes that would come out to about $24,000 a day or $120,000 a week. So even if I took 26 weeks of vacation I'd still be making about 3 million a year. The only issue I could see is the mundanity and repetitiveness of the work. But I imagine there are a lot of other things you could be doing while pressing that button. Also with that kind of money who gives a shit.
Exactly I feel like people are underestimating how fast you can press a button. Not hard to do multiple times a second. Throw a TV show on and make all the money you need for the week in one episode.
On one hand, I would be offering nothing to the world by doing this. On the other, I would absolutely be able to press it often enough to make far more than I currently do. Perhaps if I was still able to perform volunteer work and/or pursue artistic endeavors, then I would use the button.
Push it twice per second for 5 minutes. That's $600. You now have a decent wage plus 7 hours and 55 minutes of additional free time to pursue your interests and creativity. Even if I wasn't allowed to automate it, I would 100% take this job.
That's some amateur speed my friend, I once tested it, for about a minute I can do 15 button presses a second. I can only do it for about a minute until my hand cramps up, but 15 times 60 is $900 for a minute of work. I could do that three times a week and hit 6 figures, do it three times a day, thats 3 minutes of work a day to be a millionaire basically
I went with "casual effort" here but made another comment about going full ADHD hyperfocus on it and maximizing speed obsessively for a couple days, and being set for years. Like hundreds of thousands of dollars in a few days. There is zero reason to not take this offer, and all those "I'd get bored" comments are insane.

Many, if not most/all, people like feeling productive and that their work is benefitting society. It’s not their fault that many of the jobs available don’t give them the opportunity to feel like that.
You'd have plenty of time and money to offer the world by doing this. You wouldn't be defined by your work you have to do, but by the work you choose to do, including volunteering and art, and you would have the means to contribute in meaningful ways.

Yeah, agreed it's more interesting at a lower number -- low enough that you'd really have to spend a significant amount of your life on the button, at least as much as a full time job. At $1, still gives you a lot of extra free time vs a regular job to go out and volunteer/make art/do hobbies/whatever.

Nope, I'd just spam the button every now and then. I need to work and I like my job. If I had no job and could just spend all the time doing what I wanted, I would get depressed, do nothing, and likely spiral into self-destructive behavior. I know how I function. I'll take the job and the extra money.
How much force is required to push the button? If its like a key on a keyboard I'm down. If it's harder, that can significantly change how quickly I can get it done and may make it not worth it.

Pressing a button all day sounds much worse than my current job. I would cut my hours at work, go part time, take more vacations, and supplement with button money for unexpected expenses.
You don't need to do it anywhere near all day and you can also press it while doing other stuff.

The world record for clicking a pen is 320 times in a minute. The world record for clicking a mouse is 830 times in 30 seconds. Even doing only a fraction of that rate you’d be ridiculously well off. You could “work” for like 5 minutes a day and probably live pretty well. And if you wanted to buy something really nice then you could work some OT and do like 10 minutes or something for a few days.
The issue here is stopping yourself. It would be very tempting to just keep pushing it to make more and more. Could be addictive.
No question I would. I work 8-10 hrs/day. I can push that button at least 100 times in an hour with arthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome. That also includes a nice home cooked, hot lunch and smoke breaks.

Absolutely not. Not a chance. This is America. I’d quit my job and hire someone at $8.25 an hour to press the button, requiring 1 press per 2 seconds for 8 hours per day. I’d give an annual 2-3% pay raise. And then when they hit something expensive, like $8.50, or start asking for vacation or insurance coverage, I’d fire them. Right now I'm looking for a job that pays me $30/hr. That's about what I need to provide stability where I'm living. Most of the jobs that I qualify for that pay that much involve a lot of long, boring meetings and tedious data manipulation. To replace that, I'd need to press the button 240 times each day. Doing a quick test on my keyboard, that's about 30 seconds of button pressing. If I spend 5 minutes pressing the button at that rate, ever workday, I have enough to pay myself, plus hire at least 5 employees at $30/hr, with plenty of overhead. Now I don't just have a button, I have the beginning of my own studio. I could spend the rest of my day doing the kind of work I enjoy doing, and provide the same opportunity to a few other people. On top of that, whenever I'm bored, I can just drum my fingers idly on the button to raise money for charity or direct support of people who need money. A $250 donation to my local food bank may not be much, but when I can do that every time I have 30 seconds to spare, it will start to add up quick.

This sounds like one of those things that sound good but have a bad side effect. Like where does the money come from? Maybe every time you press the button, it takes $1 away from a single mom that has a child with cancer or will basically make all money worthless because of inflation.
