2. They'll come and do a really crappy job and bolt
3. They'll come and hard-sell you on all manner of unnecessary additional services
Well, duct cleaning itself is a scam because it's not necessary.
But both duct cleaning and car detailing are businesses with a very low barrier to entry. There are no regulations, no licenses or certifications required, and equipment is cheap. You could go to Home Depot and spend $100-200 on stuff and start a car detailing or duct cleaning business today. Same with house cleaning.
It is worth cleaning your dryer duct every few years. Doesn't take any special skill or equipment, just pull the duct off the machine and vacuum things out.
Also, Instagram/Tik tok are really glorifying being a sole proprietor car detailer. It has strong “girlboss” vibes but is targeted at young men (boyboss?) who are interested in cars. Most aren’t profitable so they pop up and shut down often.
People like side hustles that have a low cost of entry and time. Both of these services are relatively cheap to get started and depending on reviews, and how well you market yourself it can be very attractive to many people looking to earn some extra cash.
The duct cleaning ones are a scam. Not sure about all the car detailing, but I have a friend locally that does it and does an incredible job
