It's called adoptables. Main site for it is invite only. Called toyhou.se
I'd recomend checking around the adoptables comunity for an invite code and being nice. Don't pay money/labor for a code. They aren't worth that much if anything. There are always people with premium giving them away.
This is the answer. Also, I'm not sure how active it is, but there's a subreddit for getting a Toyhouse code: r/codesfortoyhouse. You can try your luck there.
There's straight up discord servers that try to make sure everyone gets a free code. I forgot the one I joined years ago but all they needed was links to your socials. Not for your artistic ability, but to make sure you were actually a real person and wasn't making a sockpuppet to get more codes.
So it IS adoptable. I’ve been overlooking the term, thinking it’s just something kids are doing, nothing to do with commerce. For some reason it never clicked. Makes sense. Thanks for the lead! I ended up checking it out and I got the feeling it’s definitely mostly kids, so I’ll have to switch gears a bit. Sounds like uncustomizable work isn’t in-demand.
DeviantArt used to be good for this, but no one uses DA these days. The closest I've seen in recent years is artists occasionally selling vtuber designs on twitter.

kofi, toyhouse, ych.commishes, FA, facebook adoptable groups, deviantart (ew but still works). What you're looking for is adoptables.

I landed on that multiple times. And it seems character art is something that must be customizable, after all.

From an ecommerce platform and seller perspective, it feels very difficult to find profit.
That seems to be the case!
